5 out of 5 stars Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Mozart, uniformly good Bartoli.......2006-06-19

'Mozart Arias' by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli is uniformly as good as virtually all her other albums I have heard and reviewed. The problem is that this leaves me nothing on which to recommend this album over all the other Bartoli albums, except for the fact that it is MOZART, and that is certainly something.

So, from the point of view of the relatively naive listener to classical music, who happens to have listened to a lot of albums of this sort, I say, very nice, very nice, but not really great.

5 out of 5 stars Rich full bodied delivery of superb selections of Mozart's art.......2006-03-08

The rich full voice of Cecilia Bartoli really shines in these selections. I suspect that her native language of Italian is a contributing factor to the totally natural sound of her lyrics and voice. Bartoli has a dramatic flair that emerges in her delivery that seems perfect for the selections. The recordings are consistently beautiful. Bartoli is a mezzo-soprano with incredible range. Her warm voice is so welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Bartoli.......2001-10-29

This is some absolutely beautiful music by Mozart, sung wonderfully by Cecilia Bartoli. I especially love the two arias that have the obbligato for basset clarinet or basset-horn from the opera "La clemenza di Tito" K621. Mozart had already written the great Clarinet Quintet K581 for Anton Stadler, who had invented the bassett clarinet, with an extended lower range and warmer tone than the conventional clarinet. These are played very nicely by Peter Schmidl on this CD. But the highlight of this disc is the taxing Concert aria K505, with the added delight of an obbligato piano part, played with feeling by Andras Schiff. It is the best of both worlds: combining Mozart's exquisite piano writing, with orchestra, and his penning of heavenly vocal lines. Cecilia Bartoli delivers on all counts. This is an absolute MUST for all serious Mozart collectors.

3 out of 5 stars Pipes.......2001-06-13

A collection of technically superb if somewhat passionless performances of Mozart's finest arias by one of the great voices of our time. The mastering is a bit low, so I find myself turning the volume wayyyyyy up to hear Bartoli's more delicate moments.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish, definitive Mozart.......2000-09-12

At a time when most mezzo-sopranos are doing local repertory and hoping for auditions, Cecilia Bartoli, not yet 25, recorded this album. This is a work which would proudly be referred to as the crowning achievement of many an illustrious career but, in this case, was simply a portent of things to come from the vocalist who may be the best Mozart soprano of our lifetimes. To hear Cecilia sing PUPILE AMATE alone justifies any expense. Her duets with Edita Gruberova are especially entrancing and make me wish I had been able to attend their performance live. Make no mistake, this is as fine a performance as anyone of us is likely to hear...even with Bartoli's other great works out there. Erato's MOZART ARIAS is a MUST!

Album Details

Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice — in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. It is the Earlier, Mono Recordings of These Two Operas which Are Included Here and They Reveal a Fresh-voiced Tebaldi in Recordings Which, Despite the Stereo Remakes, have Stood the Test of Time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29

This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull.......2005-08-19

Fantastic recordings at a very good price. Tebaldi and Del Monaco rule. You should definetely own this set.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Renata.......2005-03-16

To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart Heaven: Rare Jewels Of Song.......2004-12-12

This album, from the Phillips label, contains a wealth of rare and popular Mozart concert arias, ensembles and canons. For fans of Mozart opera and vocal music, this is heaven. The cover alone, with a soprano in a miniature opera house, is enough to seduce you. The music is sublime. Mozart had a gift for all kinds of music, period. In opera, in his day, he was the best. It's unfortunate that he died so young and so unpopular. It was not till years later that his musical compositions, which are in the hundreds range, came to public attention. The Phillips series has done a wonderful job of digitally restoring many fine Mozart vocal works.

On this album, we are treated to rare Lieder (written in German by the German speaking Mozart) with such talented Mozartian singers as Edith Mathis, Lucia Popp, Mozartian lyric tenors and baritones such as Robert Lloyd. The concert arias are both rare and usual. "Poppoli Di Tesaglia" is still recorded and sung, as is "Vorrei Spiegarvi O Dio". This is a real treasure and no fan of opera and Mozart should be without it. The vocal ensembles are extremely rare. Most people hear Mozart ensembles only WITHIN his operas- Le Nozze Di Figaro most notably has fine ensembles, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte and The Magic Flute. Mozart could write different lines and emotions from characters, have them singing at the same time, but the music brought it harmoniously and beautifully together. Some of the ensembles are reminiscient of English madrigals, only sung in German !! In the canons, we get a new glimpse of Mozart. Working with religious music for many years, he was able to write spiritual canons that remind us of how Mozart felt divinely inspired. This is a great album. I hope it gets into stock again. It would make a fine Christmas present.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent set from Philips.......2002-09-11

Well, not exactly every single aria by Mozart out there, but close. The performances are uniformly wonderful. Good news for the Mozart completist, eh? Life's too short to deny yourself of everything that Mozart wrote; go for it.

3 out of 5 stars For the completist only.......2002-05-30

If you simply must have every aria, alternate aria, oddball vocal work or canon of Mozart then this 8 disc whopper with a hefty price tag is for you.If you just want the main arias then the much cheaper 5 disc set-Mozart:The concert arias-with Kiri Te Kanawa and Dietrich-Fischer Dieskau is a much greater bargain and is of greater quality as well.If you want the Canons there is a set available on the Vox Box label. As for the goofoff and scatological songs you may be out of luck. Overall this is an excellent set but the price is steep. For the hardcore Mozart aficionado only.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-20

May I Please award this l0 stars!!!!Every singer in this opera was first-rate. And imagine having that great duo of countertenors :Michael Chance and Derek Ragin together again as in the opera "Tamerlano". IN addition, we have Jonathan Kenny another countertenor who sings quite well. This opera gave Handel the first great popular triumph of his career. It was composed while he was visiting Italy in 1706. The story is about Agrippina who was Nero's mother and her manipulations to get him the throne from the emperor Claudius. The situations are full of humour, but for the most part, the characters are motivated by strong, even passionate impulses. Michael Chance portrays "Ottone" the commander of the imperial army and the one who is deceived thruout the entire opera until the end when (believe it or not) everybody gets what they want. The voices of Chance and Ragin make a nice contrast:Chance's voice: rich, mellow filling up his entire body with sound;Ragin's voice: lighter, strong prone to more vibrato and ornaments. This opera is a marvelous listening treat; worth the effort it will be to purchase it.

5 out of 5 stars An wonderful recording of this important opera that set Handel on his path to fame and history.......2005-10-31

Some believe that it was the brilliance of this opera that led to Handel being invited to London. Handel was reluctant to write because he didn't see any advantage to doing all that work. However, he was persuaded and set it to a brilliant libretto by Vincenzo Grimani. Apparently the entire opera was written in only a few weeks. Some dispute this because of the quality of the writing, but contemporary testimony and Handel's fast work habits lead others to believe this accomplishment to be true.

Beyond the names, general moral depravity, and a broad historical shape, this is not an historical story. Some see it as simple a comedy of courtly manners, but others see some sly commentary on the War of Succession that was then ongoing. When Charles II died he bequeathed the crown to Phillip V much to the consternation of Leopold I, the Holy Roman Emperor, who wanted to maintain his territory intact. In this opera, Claudius names Otho his successor much to the consternation of Agrippina.

The opera opens when Agrippina receives news that Claudius has died at sea. She seizes the opportunity to advance her son, Nero, to be named Emperor. However, just before he can be crowned, Claudius arrives. He had been saved by Otho and in gratitude named him his successor. Agrippina cannot confront him directly but uses her knowledge of Claudius and his lust for Poppea to spring her trap and it almost works.

Poppea is a beauty who trades on that, but if she cares for anyone it is Otho, but she cannot deny the Emperor. It also turns out that Nero has improper desires for her as well. It is Nero's chasing her that actually undoes Agrippina's plan, but in the end all works out. Agripina gets her son names to the throne, Poppea gets Otho, and Claudius gets some peace and quiet.

The music is marvelous. It is important to remember that opera was only a century old at this time; about the same distance from the beginning of football or maybe basketball to our present time. Certain aspects of the recitative and aria had certainly been developed and made more brilliant, but there was much left to explore in the form. Handel added a great deal to the expressiveness and character development in his creative use of music appropriate to the character, for example Claudius is given wide leaps and musical lines the emphasize his clumsy and awkward qualities. These are qualities Handel develops over his career writing dozens of brilliant operas.

In this opera the roles of Nero, a boy still learning evil from his mother, was written for a castrato, but sung here by the brilliant countertenor Derek Lee Ragin. Otho was originally written for a woman, but sung here by the terrific countertenor Michael Chance. Agrippina is given all her devious splendor by Della Jones, and Poppea's beautiful shrewdness by Donna Brown. Claudius requires a very special bass voice that can plumb the depths down to the C below the staff and Alistair Miles is simply wonderful in the role.

This is a treasure of a recording of a very important opera to Handel's career. Starting with "Rinaldo" Handel wrote more brilliant operas, and others that were more subtle. However, this was the one that got him the attention that set him on the course of fame and history.

4 out of 5 stars Jones and Miles are fantastic.......2001-10-03

I'll stay out of the pro/contra countertenor argument- I am by far most impressed with Della Jones and Alastair Miles. They sing their music magnificently, not just with generally impeccable technique but with as much drama as any Verdi opera. No boring stand and sing baroque nonsense with these two. Miles has a big, rich, incisive, gorgeous basso that could sing Verdi, yet has no trouble with the coloratura. Beautiful diction and full understanding in the delivery of his recitative (Donna Brown deserves credit in this area as well).

It is almost needless to say, but Della Jones delivers her usual hgihly involved, totally committed performance with complete conviction. Every word from scheming Agrippina is invested with meaning- when do baroque recitiatives (which can be so tiresome) sound this exciting? Her arias could hardly be better sung, with beautiful line in her slow solos and accuracy at high speed in the fast coloratura. Nothing is tossed off as mere display- she sacrifices tone for dramatic expression, but just a couple of times. A real tour de force for Jones, and more justification for my impulse to buy any recording with her name on it without having to hear it first.

4 out of 5 stars first class recording of one of Handel's finest operas.......2000-11-18

When it comes to recordings of Handel's Agrippina there is admitedly little to choose from. Fortunately the two recodings we have available are excellent and either will give you a fine representation of the score. Ultimately it will come down to which conductor you prefer: Gardiner versus Mcegan. Gardiner seems to favor a more dramatic, and slightly slower approach, to the music. The orchestra really crackles in the fast numbers ("lalma fra le tempeste", etc.) in a way that Mcegans do not. I miss something of Mcegans lightness and finesse at times, but Gardiners dramatic take on the music is undeniably well executed by his forces. The singers are an interesting lot and I mean this in the best way possible. Della Jones flies through Agrippinas spiky coloratura with extraordinary ease and her highly unique true mezzo helps to give the character necessary venom. Her countrerpart on the Mcegan set is the very fine Sally Hayword who sings coloratura as brilliantly as Della Jones and makes up for what she may lack in vocal juice with a keen verbal sense. Donna Brown has a juicier voice than Lisa Safer on the Mcegan set. She sings Poppeas virtuosic music exceedingly well and creates a compelling character. As for Nerone, Derek Lee Ragin frankly sounds uncomfortable with the soprano tessitura of his part (the part lies higher than Agrippinas part) but when coloratura is called for he delivers brilliantly. On the Mcegan set Ottone is sung by the fine Drew Minter and while his slightly chalky voice may not be the most beautiful sound in the world he uses it with such complete musicality and strong sense of Handelian style that it makes up for any vocal shortcomings. Michael Chance sings well as Ottone on the Gardiner set but I find the voice a little colorless and uninteresting. I miss something of Minters dramatic fire. Miles is a very good Claudio. His voice is more cupo than we are used to hearing in Handel's music nowadays but he handles the fiendishly wide ranging coloratura so well that he seems beyond reproach. The supporting players are better on the Gardiner set including the added bonus of Ann Sofie von Otter singing as stylishly as ever as Giunone.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Genius from young Handel........2000-11-03

This recording of Handel's 3 opera, is indispensable. The voices are beuatiful, and the music, (as always) is beuatiful and gorgeous. The leading role of Agrippina, Della Jones, is great, the Nerone, Derek Lee Regin, is great in the soprano role. I had never Ragin's voice before, when I heard this, I thought a real female soprano was singing this, this man is great! The Claudio is a little to cupo, I think he sould back off some, the two henchmen are also good. And of course, Anne sofie, and Micheal Chance are always great. The orchestra is on Period instruments, which I very much appreciate (thank you so much John Eliot Gardiner) and of course, Gardiner is a great Handel interpreter. The orchestra is very crisp, and very good on the slow tempi arias, and brisk and quick on the bravuratura arias. The Beautiful, gorgeous aria, in the second act of this opera, "Voi che uditi il mio lamenti" is absolutely beautiful, the rythmic balance, Polyphony are genius, and this is why I love Handel's Music. The Arias are gorgeous, and the music is always great. I cannot begin to complement Gardiner, and the english Baroque Soloists on their porformance of this opera. The tempi is great, and I will always cherish this recording for ever. Buy this it is worth it's money!
