4 out of 5 stars Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19

Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.

5 out of 5 stars Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15

Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.

5 out of 5 stars Great 80's psychedelic.......2007-06-11

I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

So good to see stuff from the archives, it will be several days until this disk comes out of the CD player... I cut my GoR teeth on 'No Free Lunch', and that's what this collection reminds me most of; some of the great 'tongue in cheek' of that disk, but a bit of a somber mood on these tracks. A bit quiter, the brilliance of this era GoR really comes out, sound is flawless (as expected...), all the performances finely crafted. You cannot go wrong with this purchase. Now if Chuck & Dan will finally tour the USA; after all this time, all is forgiven, please come back...

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

5 out of 5 stars "film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13

Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

5 out of 5 stars Long awaited CD issue of Paisley Underground landmark.......2003-01-31

Though Green on Red is more often lauded for their later work with Chuck Prophet (e.g., the country-influenced roots-rock "Gas Food Lodging"), this first full-length LP is a true gem of LA's early-80s "paisley underground." The album's slate of twelve originals (plus a bonus original previously available only on the original cassette release) measures up nicely to the scene's other high-water marks, including Rain Parade's "Emergency 3rd Rail Power Trip," Dream Syndicate's "The Days of Wine & Roses," and The Three O'Clock's "Baroque Hoedown."

Though not as edgy as The Dream Syndicate or as punky as The Salvation Army (nor as poppy as their follow-on, The Three O'Clock), Green on Red's "Gravity Talks" integrated many of the same flavors, but resulting in a sound unlike their contemporaries. The mood takes in the bleakness and desperation of Dream Syndicate, the dreamy (or nightmarish) psychedelia of Rain Parade (whose guitarist, Matthew Piucci plays lead on "Snake Beat"), and the darker edges of True West. This is very much a rock record, but with a weariness that belies its youth-oriented genre. Vocalist and lyricist Dan Stuart surveys childhood's end, and finds himself standing at the abyss of adulthood ("Brave Generation"), assaying the failure and resignation that might lay ahead ("Old Chief"), and contemplating final departure ("Blue Parade").

The band smooths down the harder guitar sound that sparked their previous EP, taking a more contemplative approach, with longer instrumental passages dominated by organ lines that bring to mind The Doors. The purposeful nostalgia of the EP gives way to more fully digested influences, with Stuart's vocals straddling the chasm of innocence, despair and abandon that once served Roky Erickson so effectively.

Given the album's superb quality and musical uniqueness, it's surprising that it took 19 years to find CD release (especially considering that the bulk of the band's catalog made it to CD many years ago). Wounded Bird's reissue includes the track "Alice," previously available only on the original release's cassette edition. Though not essential, the track clearly fits musically and thematically with the rest of the album. The audio transfer is excellent, and the cover art, though necessarily reduced in dimension from the original LP, is sharply reproduced. It would have been nice to find some nearly penned liner notes (discussing the band, the album, the scene), but, in the end, the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Western Psychedelia.......2003-01-22

This disc never should have taken so long to come out. A true classic of Western Psychedelia with Hammond organ not found on their later music. Old Chief, a song of the downtrodden but still had a friend to lift him up. All songs with a story and good instrumentation to back it up. Gravity talks, Deliverance, Alice, Cheap Wine, all songs I would have been poorer for having missed. Now with the final discs coming out I can RIP. Green On Red, Long Ryders, Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, True West. True Friends, in music. I thank them all.

When Green on Red, the self-titled CD in this two-title reissue, was released in 1982, the originally Arizona-based Green on Red were bracketed with Los Angeles' Paisley Underground clique, then spearheaded by Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, and the Bangles. Green on Red were always a little wilder. Though cheaply produced, Green on Red is a singular debut. By the time Gas Food Lodging was recorded, Green on Red had added guitarist Chuck Prophet, whose virtuosity anchored tracks such as "That's What Dreams Were Made For" and "Hair of the Dog." Sonic and spiritual followers of Neil Young and Creedence Clearwater Revival, Green on Red made music that still sounds remarkably fresh. --Andrew Mueller

4 out of 5 stars where's the beef?.......2004-08-04

i bought this after hearing mike heidorn, the drummer of uncle tupelo, mention them in an interview as being a band of similar strain that he respected at the time his band was gaining noteriety. well, mike, yes and no. honestly, i expected a lot, and ended up thinking that i had expected more. this was an impulse buy...i saw it in my favorite store randomly, a new reissue of this band-i-had-read-about's best album with an early EP thrown in for good measure. so i got it, and expected something as genuine and rough-sounding as uncle tupelo's first two records. but this is WAY more produced and slick than those records, and that sort of ruined the experience for me. i'll have to revisit this soon to see if i still feel the same way. the songs, for their part, are uniformly solid and sometimes wonderful, as in the almost-hit "sixteen days" which sounds like a song steve earle might have made legitimately famous had it been his own. all the same, this record is infinitely superior to their very vanilla "best of" collection.

5 out of 5 stars What a scam music has become.......2004-06-22

Next to the DeBeers running the Diamond business scam, music has become the greatest scam of all time. Britney Speers goes multiplatinum and yet nobody knows who the hell Green On Red is.

These CDs are extremely good, as good as anything that Neil Young has released.

Of course, nobody will read this review though because nobody has bought a Green On Red CD for about 7 years now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the 80s best!.......2003-04-25

Take the 15 bucks and buy this album. This is where Son Volt, Wilco, Whiskeytown, Old 97s and any other band in this genre got their inspiration.
Gas, Food, Lodging ranks right up there with The Del Fuegos: The Longest Day & Boston, MA, The Meat Puppets: II, REM: Murmur, The Replacements: Let it Be, Guadalcanal Diary: Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man, Husker Du: Flip Your Wig, Zen Arcade & New Day Rising, The Long Ryders: State of Our Union, The Minutemen: Double Nickles on the Dime, The Beat Farmers: Tales from the New West and Camper Van Beethoven: Telephone Free Landslide Victory as some of the greatest albums of the 1980s.
Take advantage of this re-release...for its been a long time coming.

5 out of 5 stars SUSAN HAYWARD BELTS IT OUT.......2005-03-31

This CD is a rare treat for Susan Hayward fans - a chance to hear her do her own singing in the film "I'll Cry Tomorrow" based on the story of Lillian Roth, who battled alcoholism in her life. The sound quality is EXCELLENT and the CD includes extensive notes, and even includes unused tracks, such as the vocal efforts of studio vocalist Sandy Ellis, who was originally going to dub for Hayward. Many people are not aware that the real Lillian Roth was disapointed that her own voice tracks were not used for the film. But, Hayward surprised everyone with her surprisingly goodvocal range. The background music is exceptionally fineas well, and is all included here. This CD is a must-have for Susan Hayward fans - and lovers of fine film score music as well.
