This album is quirky and upbeat for bjork. Though her musical compositions have grown with the years, we should not forget about this 1st album. I purchased it recently because I lost it, thus proving its necessity within my cd collection!

Great artists who were exploding in the early 90's (a friggin' awesome time period) whose names start with the letter B. Beck. Beastie Boys. The Breeders. Butthole Surfers. And Bjork.
Spritely Icelandic beautifully honest human and REAL. Not weighted down with all the disgusting societal horse hockey that is becoming more and more prevelent in the U.S. as of late. Bjork is Britney Spears' antithesis.

UNIQUE,INNOVATIVE, ONE OF A KIND.

I am amazed to see such interest in Bjork and so many positive reviews. I really like much of the stuff she does. But, she is so unique and different, I would have expect her to put off more people and for some to actually hate her.

Although called Debut, this is actually her third solo album, but her first solo CD to get worldwide distribution. She had an album out when she was 11 years old and a dance album three years earlier, but those did not get much attention outside of Iceland.

This was released in 1993, after the breakup of the Sugar Cubes. It is 48 minutes long and the sound quality is good.

On this CD, she still sounds much like she did with the Sugar Cubes, but has evolved the sound more into the dance/electronica music of the time. She still has an avant garde sound, but it is a little more accessible to those who were hitting the dance clubs at the time.

She is still working on her English, giving her vocals a that eerie feel to them. At one point she sings "jetto blaster" for ghetto blaster.

The thing about Bjork is that a little can go a long way. At 48 minutes, this CD is too long. Much of it begins to sound the same and it becomes tedious. Some of the songs sound like minor variations on earlier songs. And like the Sugar Cubes, the music and vocals can be a little harsh. That along with the challenge of her voice, this all can make it difficult to listen to the whole CD in one shot.

Very Impressive Debut!.......2006-11-17

1. Human Behaviour - Björk's first solo hit in America, has a funky sound that Björk could only explain.

2. Crying - Very fun to dance too, because it has a pretty fast sound to it.

3. Venus As A Boy - Another hit song that I can't really explain, however I will say it's very addicting.

4. There's More To Life Than This - It's suppose to be live, but I think it's not, even though you here people talking & laughing. I really don't like this one like the first four songs. It has a dance sound to it, but it just can't be saved.

5. Like Someone In Love - It's boring with just a harp, so I skip this one, but you might think different.

6. Big Time Senusality - After two o.k. songs, the album gets back with a great dance song that will have you out of breathe and it was a hit!.

7. One Day - this song remains me of that song "Bedtime Stories" which Björk did for Madonna, P.S. this song is way better then "Bedtime Stories". I love the beat to this, also I love the opening with the baby giggling.

8. Aeroplane - I have mixed emotions for "Aeroplane". The song has a jungle sound with some jazz parts in it.

9. Come To Me - Great song, very unique. It's kind of slow, but still very danceable and catchy too.

10. Violently Happy - Another Björk hit that is very good, a little fast and fun to dance to.

11. Anchor Song - The worst on this album, right after "Someone Like You", skip it.

12. Play Dead - I have the bonus track version with this song on it, it's really good but alittle of a misfit on this album. Originally I read that it was on a soundtrack, maybe that's why it doesn't really go great with the other songs on here.

Well that's my review for Björk's first solo English album. I put my opinions with the type of music it is behind the song titles. Hope that this review was helpful to anyone just getting into Björk.

Bjork: DEBUT (1993).......2006-09-20

In 1993, Bjork came onto the music scene with incredible debut album entitled...well, DEBUT. Bjork originally hails from Iceland, and she came to America to release her strange sounding (but with a creative techno twist) music, and it all started here with DEBUT.

HUMAN BEHAVIOUR
The first single from the album. For fans of Bjork and her music, this was their first taste of Bjork. The song really displays Bjork's strangeness and creativing combination. The video is nothing short of a classic, and you need a classic video to fit with a classic song.

Classical music people, critics in particular, have a reputation for being grumpy, and this disc illustrates why. It's called Martha Argerich Debut Recital. Now, what does this tell you about it? Nothing, that's what. And the title isn't even correct! Actually, there's more material here than appeared on her debut recital, not the least of which is a stunning Liszt Sonata in B minor, which is the major work on the disc. When one of the two or three greatest living pianists turns in a performance of a major work like the Liszt Sonata that has been generally acclaimed, you would think that her record company would somehow get that piece of news into the title of the recording. --David Hurwitz

I just bought this disc and was blown away by it. It was everything I thought it would be and then some. It has to be one of the great piano recital CDs of all time. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this.

Undeniably Argerich.......2006-11-08

Any one interested in knowing how piano should be played and can be played should get this CD. When I first heard the CD, I was surprised already by her debut recital Argerich has mastered such a distinctive style. I must disagree with the reviewer below who describe this as not imaginative, for nothing could be further from the truth. Argerich's playing is clearly her own, and no one else's. If one wants to hear a technically perfect but emotionally empty playing of Chopin, many of the newer artists would happily fill that bill. And for the record, Horowitz can make plenty of mistakes too, but that doesn't take the charm away from listening to his playing.
That being said, this is one of the most turbulent, drenching rendition of Chopin there is. I love it.

You have to listen to this Lizst sonata.......2006-07-05

Before this performance I thought that I did not like the sonata because no other pianist could keep its many parts and segments together from the beginning to the end. This is the only performance that does that for me. When I listened to it for the first time, I broke up in tears. Argerich's interpretation is mezmerizing. Buy it! Any serious music collector should have this CD.

Unbelievably Amazing..........2006-06-16

I've never paid attention to the Liszt Sonata until I heard this recording. I canNOT BELIEVE some people are calling her without soul or "muddy"... This is the single most inspiring and shocking CD. Really gives you chills when you listen to it. Makes your heart beat faster.

Is that Liszt's great Sonata?.......2005-10-12

No words! Just a simple, superfast read of Liszt's masterpiece, no soul, no ritardandos, nothing. Only supersonic playing, full of virtuosity and bravura in "virtuoso parts", mere exercise in others. That is what people call "cirkus Liszt"! Horrible!

Different and Good!.......2007-03-12

This CD was recommended by a friend based upon bands that I listen to now (Metallica, NIN, Korn..). He said it was a little different but thought I'd like it. A great mix of alternative and metal. I truly liked the entire CD.

Exceeded my expectations.......2007-02-22

I'm relatively new to the industrial-ish scene and didn't know what to expect from this CD. I had heard "Switchback" and "The Last Firstborn" and *loved* them but I'm almost always cautious of other tracks that I haven't heard yet on albums I buy. To my pleasure I found out that my caution was unnecessary. I enjoy pretty much all of the tracks on this CD. My favorites remain as Switchback and The Last Firstborn but I discovered I really liked "Frozen." My recommendation? If you liked Switchback, The Last Firstborn, or "One Good Reason" (all of which you can hear on Pandora) then I feel you'll like this album.

This album is incredible. It never gets old, there are no repedative samples, it's hard without being too edgy like Argyle Park. You just need to buy it!

Hard II Label - Easy II Love.......2006-08-30

Celldweller has gained alot of respect and fans since the release of this. With many of these songs heard in Movies, Video Games & Internet Radio and a MySpace page filled to the brim with loyal Klayton fans. The ironic part is this guy is from Michigan (where I happen to live) where Industrial & Techno are far from the main trend. Yet this One Man Army is easily one of the most idolized idependent artists in the state, If not the country.

The albums approach is a mix of several different genres. Alternative, CyberTek, Gothic, Industrial, Metal & Techno. They all combine into a well oiled machine creating some of the most original music i've ever heard. From gritty synthed out guitar riffs, to dark overtones with soft melodic vocals and everything in between.

Songs such as 'Tragedy' have lyrics easy to sing along with and fast paced music easy to dance to or even head bang to. Other songs such as 'Switchback' have a heavier Industrial Metal influence and even have Klayton singing in audible Growl/Yell form. Tracks with a darker grittier approach like 'Symbiont' have Cyber Goth written all over them and are a nice addition to the album.

Metal fans be cautious, This album really isn't all that heavy. I suggest checking out songs on MySpace before purchasing. Everyone else don't hesitate, This is a great and original album to add to your collection. Personal favorites include: Frozen - Tragedy - Symbiont - Afraid This Time.

4.5 Stars. Excellent album........2006-08-29

I was fortunate enough to get this disc a little while back, and I had no idea the version I acquired was a low bit rate, internet leak. So, about 2 months ago, I buy the album and never really do much with it, but yesterday I brought it into work and I was floored at the difference. Lesson learned: Buy your CD's, even if you get the "early" version. Or just wait for the final to drop.

Yes, Celldweller is not Circle of Dust. They aren't industrial. What we've got here is a tapestry of rock, house, drum n' bass, and industrial, and it's quite a project he has here. A lot of people criticize it because he uses clean vocals, catchy harmonies, and club beats. I praise the man for it, and I'll tell you why this album is amazing, and why it's pushing the envelope. (Hopefully the soon-to-appear sophomore disc will be the sonic powerhouse a lot of people have been saying it is). Also, I'm going to not compare it to Circle of Dust or Argyle Park, as this is a completely different beast.

First off, Celldweller is defintely catchy and poppy. There is no doubting this. Some of their songs, like the rap infused synthetic rocker Switchback, are high energy affairs that allow you to bob your head and sing along. However, the variety of song structures, the use of synths, heavily processed guitars, and throbbing programmed drum beats all come together to produce something that doesn't skimp on either the rock or techno side. This isn't electronica sprikled over numetal, ala Spineshank, and it defintely isn't techno with a bit of guitar filled in. This a perfectly balanced combination of the two creating something quite unique, good to the ears, and something you can dance to. Once the album progresses and you start hearing the acoustic bits, the catchy rock riffs, the vocoded female vocal leads, you'll start to understand: This isn't a faliure at industrial, it's an almagamtion of all the styles of music the man in charge (Klayton) enjoys.

The high points for me are without a doubt the 7 minute techno epic "The Last Firstborn", with its hypnotic house rhythms, amazingly well mixed guitar parts that don't overwhelm the general feeling but add immesurably to it, and the whispered/raspy spoken word/rap hybrid vocals. Add some cool guitar breakdowns and infintely creepy lyrics, and it's a 10/10. The other high point comes later in the album, the much shorter and more rock-styled Fadeaway. From the trip-hop intro, which quickly gets a dose of chugging riffage, to the soaring and amazingly catchy chorus, this song rocks your ears until it drops down into an unexpected acoustic break complete with erie synths switching between your ears and a solemn vocal performance.

I can't recommend this album enough to people who have an affinity for rock and an even passing interest in electronica and industrial rock (Front Line Assembly fans need not apply ;) ). Don't expect a mind-twisting, calculated insanity. This is not Aphex Twin with guitars. This is straight up 4/4 beats, a high range mix of vocals, simple rock guitars, enough hooks to hold down a hungry Oprah, and some of the best club sample work I've heard outside of rave dj's. If your idea of great music simply consists of how heavy it is, then you're better off somewhere else. If your benchmark of good industrial is Squarepusher or Aphex Twin (both of which I love, btw) and if your rock collection consists of Gorguts, Starkweather, or even to a lesser degree Trivium, this probably isn't the album for you.

However, if you can take some pop, some club beats, and a motherload of catchy rhythms, get this album. You will not regret it.

I listened to this music (my daughter is half Hawaiian) when my daughter was a baby ten years ago and it would always soothe her and put her to sleep because it's so soothing and beautiful. Now, my son, when he teeths he is inconsolible! He will not stop for a bottle, to be rocked, sang to, put down in his bed, etc. But I play this, and not even 3 seconds later, he is on his way to la la land. It is wonderful. I recommend it to any parent! Or anyone who wants to de-stress.

My Favorite CD.......2006-02-17

Keali'i Reichel has such a nice mellow voice.
His Music is so soothing and Kawaipunahele is my favorite CD of his works!
Keali'i Reichel includes familar songs along with the Hawaiian theme that puts you in a very mellow mood.
Only wish I had this CD when my kids were all small.
I have bought two of this CD one I bought in Hawaii and this one I bought for my girlfriend because she drives a Limo and would use it in the Limo.

Feel the Spirit of Aloha.......2006-02-08

I bought this CD on Maui, listened to it while we were there, brought it home and listened to it and, thanks to the included lyrics, learned the words to all the songs. I don't speak much Hawaiian, but I now can sing some songs in Hawaiian. Keali'i Reichel has a wonderful voice, great talent, a love for Hawaiian traditions and his legacy, and I can feel the Spirit of Aloha as he sings the songs on this CD.

You've got to have this one!.......2005-08-30

As you know, all of Keali'i's CD's are recommended. This one was his debut CD, released in 1994. It features traditional Hawaiian favorites such as "Akaka Falls," as well as original compositions including "E Ho'i I Ka Pili," "Kauanoeanuhea," and the title track, "Kawaipunahele." It also contains cover versions of The Beatles' "In My Life" and Sticks' "Come Sail Away." Keali'i's chanting comes across at the beginning of "In My Life" and in the last track, "He Mele Inoa No Kawaipunahele." Be sure to pick this one up!

This is a fun musical experience for kids of all ages. My son (age 9) has memorized almost all of the songs and loves the humor in the music. we have given this CD as a gift numerous times and every one seems to love it.

kids music for adults.......2004-05-10

For everyone who has ever said "not AGAIN" when loading traditional "kids" music in the car, this is the album for your family. We got ours on cassette and wore it out; we're still not tired of it. Who can resist a group that counts to 18 in roman numerals and gets it right? The songs are singable, danceable, and great fun. It's got just the right mix of fast and slow, silly and serious, and none of the annoying frenetic goofiness often heard in kids albums.

His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.

i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone

A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05

This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.

In the main, sonic differences between Sony Classical's 20-bit remastering of this landmark 1955 recording and its previous incarnation in the CBS Great Performances series (CBS MYK 38479) are subtle rather than striking. Tape hiss is reduced, while ambient studio noise is heightened, bringing Glenn Gould's trademark humming and squeaky chair more into the foreground. One can also perceive slight changes in microphone setups between certain variations. Gould completists, however, will want this Glenn Gould Edition transfer for two fugues recorded in 1957, drastically different from the pianist's perverse remakes 13 years later for his complete Well Tempered Clavier Book II. Any respectable piano collection, however, should include Gould's debut Goldbergs, at any price. --Jed Distler

Astounding performance - opening the doors to Bach!.......2007-04-18

Before the first time I heard Gould's first rendition of the Goldberg Variations, I used to think the music by Johann Sebastian Bach was too dry and intellectual and boring for my tastes (that was before discovering the excellent period-instrument performances) - but the lightning-fast, emotive, astounding rendition recorded by Gould made me reconsider that opinion. Yes, we hear his intrusive humming and the squeaking of the chair and such - that many consider a turn-off regarding Gould recordings - but I think they are part of the charm of the performance, and I don't find them distracting at all.

I really prefer this version instead of the second Golberg recording, more calm and controlled. If you never heard any music from Bach, this is the recording to begin with, I think.

A State of Wonder, Indeed........2006-04-09

There are three people who are responsible for the "resurrection" of the Goldberg variations, at least as far as the general publicis concerned: Wanda Landoska, Rosalyn Tureck, and Glenn Gould. Without them, the Goldberg Variations certainly would not get the attention they do, and may have ended up a curiosity music students discover on budget labels by performers seeking overblown and romantic interpetations or sterile "period correct" (in other words, uninformed) performances that leave listeners yawning. Instead, thanks to those three, the Goldberg is as well know even to the casual music listener as Beethoven's Pathetique or Mozart's Rondo a la Turka are.

Now, I certainly believe that Landowska's rendition is the most well informed, and even the most revolutionary in terms of true period correctness (she was the first to record it for the harpsichord and with correct baroque ornamentation), and she had a musicality that made the listener believe they were listening to an orchestra instead of just a single keyboardist. Tureck's interpretation is so dancelike and pleasant. It sounds so free and happy, I get the image that there are dancers on the keys of her piano. She was really the one that showed that the Goldberg Variations could be performed on a piano without reverting to the overly romanticized versions that had dominated up to that time.

It was Landowska and Tureck two that allowed for what is arguably the most famous interpretation of the Goldbergs: Glenn Gould's 1955 recording. Inspired by Landowska's passion for early music done right, and Tureck's justified piano performance that stood out head and shoulders above the others, Gould combined the best elements of the two and added his own rhythmic and dynamic perfection to create a masterpiece of a recording. His tempi were (in general) nearly twice as fast as most performers', indeed as his own 1981 recording, which, in places, I prefer (refer to variations 1,5,10,14,16, and 29), yet he is always in control and never sounds like he's straining to get to the next note. His staccato and light touch give it wonderful bell-like clarity, and it's the closest you'll get to a harpsichord recording on a piano. Yes, his 1981 recording is more mature, but it's a difference in interpretation than technical prowess, and I think the choice between the two comes down to mood, and even, as mentioned above, to the individual variations.

This recording was his first studio recording, presenting all the fire and passion of a twenty three year old showing the world that he's got something to prove. An odd choice for a first recording, most pianists would probably be forced into some half-hearted renditions of Chopin or Mozart, but Gould knew what he was doing. He must have known that the time was right for a Bach interpretation that paid homage to the greatness achieved in the past as well as one that strode confidently into the future, a future where (in a philosophy like Landowska's) old music was no longer quaint but revered and modern music didn't seek to "revolutionize" but instead sought to build upon. This was an increasingly prevalent attitude in the 1950's and 1960's thanks to people like Landowska, Harnoncourt, and, of course, Gould. We can see this philosophy in Durufle, De Falla (one of the first twentieth century composers to write for the harpsichord), and later Stravinsky. Gould's Goldbergs played no small part in Baroque's new birth. Do yourself a favor and get both of Gould's Goldbergs, Wanda Landowska's Goldbergs, and perhaps Koroliov's Goldbergs or Tatiana Nikolayeva's Goldbergs. You'll be quite glad you did.

The Marlon Brando of piano!.......2006-02-17

These Goldberg formally inaugurated the auspicious debut of this well famed pianist. Until that time Bach was played with such impeccable austerity and intellectuality that literally became a shock to listen a very young man -23- challenging all the musical conventionalisms and old precepts which turned around the conceptual steadiness and serious formalism at the moment to play Bach at the piano.

Gould made an incisive breakthrough and showed that the formality and the Dionysian spirit may habit together, without those bitter presumptions or austere poses.

He impregnated the Goldberg variations with Mediterranean jubilee, effusiveness and radiant greenness. And this posture influenced a whole generation in all fields.

So those Goldberg carry on its own trademark. A historical reference by all accounts.

Indispensable collection piece.

This CD is arguably one of the best classical recordings ever, period. One single piano playing Bach's Goldberg Variations. The other reviewer hit it right on the head when he said it does not get any better than this. I cannot do this recording justice with words, so simply purchase it immediately.

I was expecting at least some re-harmonization on these tunes but very much

Sophie Milman (GREAT).......2006-07-29

I just received the new "linus" Sophie Milman CD and have been playing it over and over again.

The visualization of a fantastic playful jazz angel on the other side of such a beautiful voice is not hurt by the reality that she is one. Her harmonic rythmic voice makes the heart happy just to listen to it and entertains the mind with frequent smooth variations that make other overcomplicated musicians just seem dull and nervous. She also has a great bunch of excellent jazz musicians that accompany her and they echo the mood perfectly. Great job Sophie Milman and "LINUS"!

Knock Out Debut.......2006-07-23

An ultra hip, swinging song stylist; and this time I'm not talking about Mark Murphy. Sophie Milman is a revelation, by way of Russia, Israel, and Canada. She sings the hell out of a song here. Want proof? Check out "My Baby Just Cares For Me." "I Feel Pretty," and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." For a great change of pace, there's "La Vie en Rose" in French and "Dark Eyes" in Russian. Want more? The band includes some exceptional talent, and is a perfect fit for Milman. This is a great cd by a beautiful, brilliant young singer.

The Differences Between Sophie and Diana.......2006-07-16

When this c.d. hit American release, it came with a lot of hype. "The Next Diana Krall" was the proclamation. Perhaps because of the hype, this is one of the top jazz c.d.'s on I-Tunes, and has been so for awhile.

It didn't take me long to get past the hype. Sophie Milman, like Diana Krall, is an attractive blonde singer who sings standards in a jazzy style. And like Ms. Krall, she calls Canada home (although Ms. Milman was born in the U.S.S.R., and emigrated to Canada by way of Israel as a teenager).

There the similarities end. Actually, Ms. Milman has a rounder, fuller singing voice than Ms. Krall, although Sophie does have a tendency to scoop and croon a lot. But she also has a tight, tremelo vibrato which comes out when she's singing a loud note in her chest voice, and I like it.

But here's the thing: when Mme. Krall hit the scene 10 years ago, there weren't that many attractive standard-singing young jazz chanteusses. She came along at the right time. Now, the scene is saturated with them.

And as a result, if that's how you're making your mark, you have to do something to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack. For example, you could mix some killer songs of your own with the standards. (e.g., Rene Marie, Jackie Allen or Erin Bode) Or, you could mix a fair number of well-done European art songs with the standards. (e.g., Ilona Knopfler, Jackie Ryan or fellow countryman, Madeleine Peyroux). Or, you could mix in some nods to more current fare, so as to gain the interest of baby-boomers and gen-x'ers. (e.g., Karrin Allyson, Lizz Wright, Janis Siegel or Lea DeLaria). Or, you could become proficient on an instrument in addition to voice (e.g., Ms. Krall, Dena DeRose, Patricia Barber, or Luciana Souza).

Or, you could do the standards in truly unique ways never attempted before. (e.g., Tierney Sutton, Cheryl Bentyne or Cassandra Wilson--back when Ms. Wilson did standards, that is.) These standards are pretty standard. In fact, outside of the jazzy read of "I Feel Pretty" and the "Goldfingerish" variations on "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," there's nothing here that especially piques my interest.

It seems that most jazz singers start with an album of standards. The really talented ones figure out where to grow from there. All of the above-mentioned singers have grown since their beginnings. Hopefully, that will be true of Sophie Milman as well. RC

Great debut.......2006-03-30

Heard this CD online and immediately ran out to get it. Sophie Milman has a sophistication and depth to her voice that belies her age. While she evokes the spirit of the great jazz singers of the '40s and '50s, she has a fresh approach to the old songs and a contemporary sound for the more modern cuts. Her voice has a rich, satisfying quality that will only get better with age. She has done her homework on the great smoky-jazz singers of the '50s, capturing the quality of those singers while bringing her own style to her singing.

She even makes the three least interesting songs--"I Feel Pretty," "Ochi Cherney," and "This Time of the Year"--listenable with her easy-swinging style. The band is great and provides smooth accompaniment.

I look forward to her future releases.

Ground-breaking music, but hard to categorize.......2005-01-20

Dave and Tracy are hard to classify: a little bit country, a little bit Celtic, a little bit Native American--but every part good.

"When I go" a life-affirming eulogy, which could be used for Carter himself, is the star of this very eclectic collection. It's serious, moving, and amazing. Just when you think you've got that pinned down, Dave comes up with "Little Liza Jane" an anthem from a trucker to his truck.

There are only 3 Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer CDs in print, because Carter died 2 years ago at 49 of a stroke. He'll definitely be missed in the music business. Do not miss the opportunity to buy this CD.

Overrated.......2004-12-23

This may be a sentimental favorite for true fans, but Tanglewood Tree is a much, much better album.

An absolutely stunning debut CD, far superior to what followed and I rate those as some of the best I own. The lyrics and sparse raw musicianship shines. Pretty darn good for being done in Tracey's kitchen. The title track is especially effective considering that it was just a few short years and Dave would go. Way too soon, way too soon.

Stunning Peek at the Magic to Come.......2003-10-23

This is the first and sparest of all Dave and Tracy's work together, which was purposely crafted in the kitchen of Tracy's apartment in order to capture the "live" sound of their performances together. But from the moment I heard my first Dave and Tracy song, the title track to this album, I was utterly hooked. My spine tingled as the stunning, sad beauty of the melody washed over me. I found myself haunted by the vivid, lushly poetic lyrics ("...I will crumble down, uncountable, in showers of crimson rubies when I go..." or "And should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderline/Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines/Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so/All your diamond tears will rise up/And adorn the sky beside me When I Go), and was compelled to find the album and buy it immediately. Once I got it, I wept at the exquisite intricacy of this devastatingly beautiful song. It is at once joyous and tragic and I have simply never heard another song like it (and doubt I ever will).

No other song on this first album is quite like When I Go, a singular anthem to the journey that awaits us all, but there are true gems. It's almost unbelievable to those familiar with subsequent works that Tracy's voice is brought to the fore only on "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love" except for backing Dave, who fronted the rest of the album. Perhaps it was because this was their first musical pairing and therefore only a "toe in the water", but there is much evidence of the magic to come on their next two LPs. In this work, Dave's extraordinary storytelling style is gently revealed on a bed of fine guitar work and buoyed by Tracy's supportive, resonant violin and sweet vocal accompaniment. Overall, this album has an intimate vulnerability to it that tends to bring out a protective quality in myself and other ardent Dave and Tracy fans. It's almost like the baby of the family of their work together-a tiny herald of the immensely impressive musical force yet to come. Even though this has its own special place in my personal all-time favorites and is every bit worthy of a 5-star rating and even despite the jaw-dropping mastery of the title song, this may not be the best album for those looking for a first introduction to the world of Dave and Tracy. I would actually recommend to the newcomer to work backwards through the three albums-starting with "Drum Hat Buddha" and "Tanglewood Tree", and after you've been thoroughly enchanted by the spellbinding body of their work, sit down and listen to this sweet little acorn of an album. It isn't until you know their later work that you can appreciate the raw appeal of this first offering.

Aside from the aforementioned "When I Go" and "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love" (you don't have to be a musical theorist to appreciate the craftsmanship and brilliance of this seemingly simple song of loss and being lost--but you will find yourself singing it to yourself later), the following tracks also stand out after a listen or two: "Annie's Lover", "The River, Where She Sleeps", "Lancelot", "Frank to Valentino" and "Elvis Presley".

Dave and Tracy, the formative years.......2003-10-21

Their first widely available album, this is one fine work. You need listen no further than the first song to be utterly drawn in (and possibly crying). I cannot say I liked all the songs on this CD. I feel that as they searched for an identity (well established in Tanglewood Tree and Drum Hat Buddha), they tried to sound like other folk artists. The result is somewhat fakey in a couple of the songs (where Dave gets a pretty wheezy southern-ish accent), but that is what 'song blocking' on your CD player is for! However, the good songs on this CD are incredibly good and worth the price to complete the all too small selection of Dave and Tracy recordings out there.

As the line in the opening track, "The Peanut Vendor", says: "Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong." And back in 1971, the purchasers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads known as The King's Singers were all over television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri--also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and color in the CD transfer (though, please note, there's less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe," "Scarborough Fair," and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" are here, along with lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise and complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. --Andrew Green

Thirty years old: still terrific.......2003-02-02

We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing.

The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?

It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.

Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the orignal sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.

The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and Garfunkel arrangement, whereas The Oak and the Ash and Blow Away the Morning Dew are special creations for the group by Gordon Langford.

Time Was and The Green Leaves of Summer show the group's ability to create a wonderful mood through slow, soulful singing.

Highly recommended. Timeless music.

In the thirty or more years that the King's Singers have been going, they've released dozens of CDs. And as much as I adore some of their recent recordings, I still regard this first album as some of their best work.

This performance is both of a very high quality and is also a magnificent showcase of the variety of things the King's Singers sing. I doubt you would find many other recordings which contain works by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bacharach as well as traditional folksongs from the British Isles and America - especially not recordings that are of such a high standard. The vocal harmonies are just delicious, and the Gordon Langford Trio also provides a brilliant accompaniment and gives songs like The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah and Summertime a delightful relaxed feeling. Then there is also the lighthearted and whimsical What Kind of Things - a song all about what sort of music the King's Singers sing!

I was going to give this CD four stars rather than five (mainly because I hesitate to give top marks to anything ever - I know, I'm picky), but in the end I honestly couldn't think of anything which would justify taking a star away. It's worth all five!
