5 out of 5 stars Oldies but Goodies.......2006-11-10

I ordered this CD for one song specifically, "Falling" by Lenny LeBlanc and Pete Carr. All the other songs were a bonus. The memories from my teen years came flooding back as I listened. Those of us who grew up in the 70's had the very best music as the soundtrack for our lives. "Falling" is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever....I cried and cried as I listened, reflecting on times past and loved ones I've lost.

4 out of 5 stars Have A Nice Day: Volume 25 Is A Good Finale For This Series!.......2006-08-15

Now that I finally own all Volumes of this, Have A Nice Day, Series; I wanted to brief you a little bit on the final one of the series which is this Volume 25. I rated it 4 stars because I liked it. I think it is one of the better Volumes.
Several good songs give a strong presence here. Personal favorites are, Lead Me On, Shake It, My Angel Baby, and , Love Takes Time, plus there is also one song on this Volume that I want to brag about and with good reason. I have always been a sucker for Ballads and there have been plenty of good ones over the years.....but two Ballads hit the airwaves in the latter 70s that I consider two of the best ever and one of them is right here being LeBlanc and Carr's, Falling. The other can be found on 1979 Billboard Top Hits called, Just When I Needed You Most, by the late great Randy Vanwarmer....Very Nice!
Speaking for the entire H.A.N.D. series....Volume 18 is the only store bought Volume I own and it was my first.....I purchased the other 24 online (Thanks Guys and/or Gals) and this Volume 25 was one of the first to catch my eye. I also have several other favorite Volumes besides this one. I think Volumes 6 and 23 are the weakest but they are still decent. In otherwords.....it is a good series and well worth having. I have found after all these years that these 300 songs on this series (plus so many other songs from that era) sound even better the second time around and they will never get old! Ya know.....In 1975; The Great Band, Chicago, came out with a very good nostalgic tune called, Old Days, and Peter Cetera pretty much sums it up with the lyrics when he said they.....Take Me Back To A World Gone Away; Memories Seem Like Yesterday.....and he was (and still is) right. Now we can say the same thing not only about that song; but also about the entire 70s H.A.N.D. Series and all the other good music and fun happenings that we had back then.....How Time Flies!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Collection Of 70's Music Out There--Hands Down.......2006-06-21

Instead of giving an individual review of each volume in this series, I decided to give one review on the final volume of the series.

As a child in the 70s I grew up hearing these songs on the radio and the entire series really gave me a feeling of nostalgia. When I started collecting this series, I didn't always know each artist or even each song title, but once I spun the disc, the lyrics to these songs came back from the dark void of my memory. That was half the fun of this whole series. Volume 13 was the one volume in the entire series that I remebered each song. Volumes 12, 13, 14 and 15 are my favorite volumes.

Not each volume is a winner. Volumes 4, and 6 I felt weren't that great of volumes, but each volume contains at least 4-5 great gems. Again, the entire series is great.

This series and Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind series are hands down the best series of 70's music out there. I give both series five stars. If there was one thing that I felt that Rhino missed on these was that they didn't take each series out to five more volumes. The would have given Have A Nice Day 30 volumes and Didn't It Blow Your Mind 25 volumes. Either way, the Have A Nice Day series is my favorite 70s music complilation series and it has gotten lots of use in my CD player.

If you like quirky AM pop from the 70s, then this series is for you. You won't regret it. If your looking for more of the FM style 70s music, then get Time/Lifes Sound of the 70s.

After reading several reviews for the various volumes in this series, it's clear the some people missed the entire point of this series. This entire series was supposed to resemble or be a throw back to those infamous compilation LPs from K-Tel that were everywhere in the 70s. This series wasn't supposed to have great songs. Just memorable ones.

5 out of 5 stars If you are HARD CORE 70's...............2006-01-02

So what - some of the songs aren't Top 10 hits - but they were part of your life if you loved 70's AM Radio! If you bought 45's - If you bought albums - If you listened to the radio - you know these songs! If you want repetitive Top 10 songs, then get another collection. If you truly want the songs of the 70's.... GET ALL 25 VOLUMES of "HAVE A NICE DAY!"

4 out of 5 stars You get too much you get too high..........2004-05-20

Well, several volumes of the Rhino collection aren't perfect, but they all bring us back in their own inimitable way. "Love Is Like Oxygen" has the perfect lyrical "hook" as well as a variety of musical gimmicks. "How Much I Feel" is either totally saccharine or a genuine tearjerker depending on your point of view, but they sure sang it like they felt it. Wow! "Falling", a slowdance harmony classic for the next hundred years, is rightfully included here, too. Gino Vanelli can take his big 'fro elsewhere for all I care, but I'm sure he has his fans (in Montreal and elsewhere). "5705" and "New York Groove" appear to have been included for archival purposes only. Did anyone actually like those songs when they came out? "My Angel Baby", an instant classic, joins the pantheon of 50's-sound "stroll" tunes, and its similarities to Robert John's "Sad Eyes" are obvious (once the Rhino folks call attention to this in their liner notes). "Love Takes Time" and "Shake It" contain a strong sexual subtext, hearkening back to an era where songs couldn't be "explicit" in their lyrics. "Get Used To It", an upbeat one-hit wonder, remains one of the few songs of the rock era using a synthesized harpsichord. Maxine's "Lead Me On" slows the tempo as the CD concludes with the anarchistic, defeatist "Oh Well" ("I can't sing, I ain't pretty, and my legs are thin"). You need this CD. Get it now, so you know what the originals sounded like before Jewel and/or Lenny Kravitz records a re-make!

Ordered this CD for the Tin-Tin song (which in fact debuted in 1969) and am personally delighted with the whole album.

4 out of 5 stars SUPER HITS OF THE 70's: Have a nice day, Vol. 16.......2007-05-12

Brilliant CD bringing back a whole heap of memories - full of nostalgia!!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Assortment of Early 70s Songs.......2005-01-07

This is a good collection and a good value. Of the 12 songs, I rate 8 of them very good or excellent. My favorites are "The City Of New Orleans", "Overture From Tommy" and "Never Ending Song Of Love". I only rate one of the songs, "Small Beginnings" as less than good.

If you like early 70s music and you need several of these songs for your collection, this CD is a good buy.

3 out of 5 stars worthwhile rarities, but musically dull.......2002-09-26

I couldn't pass up this album because it has some songs that are hard to find elsewhere, especially this version of "Overture From Tommy," but it's a confused collection. Unlike the first albums of this series that were highly focused on a given year, this one spans from late 1969 (when "Midnight Cowboy" first appeared on the charts) through late 1972 ("The City of New Orleans"). Also, some of the songs are too obscure ("Small Beginnings") and there are no really exciting songs anywhere, which makes it a fairly dull listening experience.

3 out of 5 stars Pool Songs.......2002-07-18

I'm not a great fan of this type of collection, but this one has one of my all-time favorite tunes on it that can be found nowhere else ("Toast And Marmalade For Tea"), and most of the other tunes take me back to the AM-radio playing at my suburban neighborhood pool what seems like 1000 years ago.

There are, as there always are with these collections, 4 or 5 tunes that are just garbage and would be better off forgotten. Why would anyone listen to "The Assembled Multitude" (whatever that is) stumble through the Overture from Tommy when the Who's version is lightyears better? Why would anyone listen to The New Seekers "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," a tune better known for being used in a Coke commercial than anything else? And why, why, WHY would anyone listen to Wayne Newton sing anything at all?

The 70's were very weird, that's why.

By the way, I grew up during this period and listened to the radio every waking hour, and I can say with absolute confidence that I never heard of Flash or their awful, awful song "Small Beginnings" until I bought this CD.

Extreme's debut album is sometimes uneven but always fun. Van Halen influences are prominent, which is ironic given singer Gary Cherone's post-Extreme career. This album, like all of Extreme's work, is notable for Nuno Bettancourt's guitar playing, but the songs aren't bad either, mostly examining childhood from a playful but oddly mature perspective. "Kid Ego," their first single, is here, as well as "Mutha (Don't Want to Go to School Today)," "Little Girls," "Big Boys Don't Cry," and the rock-out finale "Play with Me." There are a few ballads as well: "Watching, Waiting" is particularly poignant and surprisingly spiritual in content. This album showed Extreme's considerable potential, which peaked with their second album, Pornograffitti. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Anonymous Glam/Hair metal good time debut - 3.5 stars.......2007-01-29

OK, if your reading this review you probably know the Extreme story to some extent, how they started off as a fairly generic but fun hair metal mob and wound up going on a journey into far more interesting (intellectually and musically) areas that were, alas, barren of commercial payoffs.

So what do we get on this debut?

Firstly you get a huge pop metal supernova with musical ability above the norm for this sort of dross. Led of course by the obscenely talented Mr Nuno Bettencourt and the super smooth vocalisations of Gary Cherone. And bonus points to the band for producing a few tracks themselves, though most of the tunes on offer here were knob-jobbed by someone or something going by the name of Mack. Um yeah whatever.....

Secondly as the album unfolds you realise that the band have played to their strenght, which increases the listeners respect. Tunes like Wind Me Up are good time party rockers and along with tunes like Kid Ego are what the prospective listener should try to listen to a sample of before buying this disc as they so perfectly encapsulate the happy happy joy joy metal the band were purveying at this point in their career. And the funky touches provided by the rhythm section with tasty intrusions by Nunos guitar are well done, though funk may not be to everyones taste. A good example of this toe tapping inducing funk side to the band would be Teachers Pet.

But as much as I enjoyed a number of Extreme releases and have always kicked myself for missing them live (did catch a Nuno solo tour though) there are a couple of downsides to this album.

These would include the slightly too juvenile approach. Stuff like Little Girls is a bit embarrassing and some of the other tunes walk just to the wrong side of the very thin line between cool silly and uncool silly such as Big Boys Don't Cry. All through the album I find myself hankering for their more accomplished Pornograffiti album.

If your an Extreme fan you really should pick this up. It shows a band struggling against the limitations of their chosen genre, partying on and actually offering something a little different from some of their competitors of the time. It's all well played and it's always a pleasure to hear the blazing six string of Nuno who is on particularly fine form on Kid Ego and Play With Me - the latter a perfect example of everything that is right and wrong with this album (and was actually featured on the first Bill & Ted's movie soundtrack).

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well done.........................2006-10-19

The S/T first effort by one of the most talented rock bands of the 80s/90s. Though not their best album (by far) this record showed the song-writing prowess of this incredible band, and displayed the potential that would come to fruition on their later releases. Many dismiss this album, and the song-writing, as sophmoric and immature, even cheesy. I disagree.

Extreme has always had the ability to write and compose songs that seem simple, even shallow on the surface, but that have much deeper meanings, and are themed much more seriously upon closer examination. Wind Me Up, Play With Me, and Flesh N Blood are examples of this, though they delve into the sexual double entrende. But this concept is displayed most strongly on the emotional ballad Rock A Bye Bye. On the surface seemingly just a play on the lullaby Rock A Baby, this song tackles the difficult issue of abortion, but from the fetus' point-of-view. Extremely (pun intended) powerful and moving.

Sure there are a lot of 80s metal riffs and standards here. But when you look at these songs closely you can see much more at work than first meets the eye, something the band would use to the fullest on their next two albums.

And, of cours,e they took a huge risk by including a song (Watching, Waiting) based on Christian theology. The song is very powerful and the vocals are arranged very well, as Nuno (guitarist) sings this song as a duet with Gary (lead singer).

This is a must have for any Extreme fan, and is strongly recommended for those drawn to the 80s metal (hair band) sound, but that want that sound with a little more depth than traditionally provided by these types of bands.

3 out of 5 stars Extreme's weakest album, but not bad.......2006-04-21

Throughout the latter half of the 80s, the Boston band Extreme became one of the city's most popular bands. Nuno Bettencourt, (guitar) Gary Cherone, (vocals) Paul Geary (drums) and Pat Badger (bass) packed clubs weekly and grew an enthusiastic following. The young and promising band was signed with A&M and anticipation ran high for the band's debut.

Some bands blow their wad on the debut. It's not uncommon for a band to spend years playing clubs, build up a following, and then release the best of their material on the first album, and then enter the infamous "sophomore slump." For Extreme, however, this was not the case. Of the band's four studio albums, the self-titled debut (1989) is by far their weakest offering.

"Extreme" isn't a bad album, it's actually a decent effort. It's basically a by-the-numbers, generic hair-metal album. Like most pop-metal albums of the 1980s, it's a mix of Van Halen and KISS. It has all the ingredients essential to a hair metal album; sing-along choruses, a guitar virtuoso, catchy riffs, aqua net, party anthems, baled(s) and cheesy lyrics.

The problem with Extreme's debut is that we've seen this all before, and done better, with such genre defining albums as Warrant's "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich," (1989) Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood," (1989) Poison's "Open Up and Say Ahh...," (1988) and KISS's "Animalize" (1984). "Extreme" just comes across as another tired, formulaic album in a genre that was running out of steam. Still, the album is effective and fans of the pop-metal genre will find much to like with such songs as "Little Girls," "Wind me up," "Mutha, don't wanna go to school today," and "Play with me." The rest of the album is pretty much just filler, albeit enjoyable.

Extreme was actually a highly underrated band that encompassed elements of Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Van Halen. The band would go on to make some incredible albums with their classic sophomore release "Pornograffiti" (1990) and their breathtaking magnum opus "III Sides to Every Story" (1992). Extreme's debut, however, is not up-to-par with those albums and is just another good, but untimely forgettable pop-metal album.

4 out of 5 stars Hey Kid Ego!.......2006-03-20

In the late 80's and early 90's it was about how in your face you can get with your sound. Nobody was better at this art form then Extreme and this is where they started.

What I mean about "in your face" is not about speed, not about heavy and not about how popular you can get. It is about putting emphasis on every instrument including the vocals while still making the song melodic. Extreme did this, well to the Extreme.

What I find is a shame is that thier biggest hit and probably the only song Extreme will be remembered by is the Mega-hit "More Than Words" When it comes to music, does it really matter what the general public thinks. If you thought like them, you wouldn't even consider buying this CD no less be reading this review.

As for the record itself... read on
Even though this is probably the bands 3rd best recording, it still has a few stand out tracks. Mutha (Don't Wanna go to School Today) is a true 80's rock Anthem. Wind Me Up is filled with killer licks and overthe top vocal production. Play With Me shows off Nuno's A1 guitar skills. Not every track is top notch though(there are some weaker songs toward the end of the disc)

Overall this is one of the better releases from the late 80's hard rock genre. Ignore all who say Extreme was just a one hit wonder with a ballad and see for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Extreme's debut album.......2005-04-14

Extreme (1989.) Extreme's first album.

When you think of the glam metal movement of the eighties, Extreme is NOT a band that is likely to come to mind. If you DO remember them, it's for their ballads Hole Hearted and/or More Than Words, from their 1990 sophomore album noth their rockers. Other bands of the eighties tended to steal the spotlight, and thus these guys were, in a sense, left out in the cold. They were never immortalized the way bands like Poison were. That's a real shame, since these guys were extremely talented musicians. Nuno Bettencourt has got to be the most underrated guitar virtuoso on the planet. And of course, Gary Cherone is one hell of a singer (though it was a different story when he joined Van Halen, but try to forget about that.) Read on for my review of Extreme's 1989 self-titled debut album.

Extreme's debut has often been called uneven and wild, and I agree with this. However, I don't think that makes it a bad album by any means. Little Girls kicks things off. It's bluesy hard rock, and the harmonica is a nice touch. Good starter track. Wind Me Up, melodic hard rock with inventive lyrics, is what we get next. Another classic Extreme tune that never got the proper credit. Following it up is Kid Ego, the biggest hit off the album. Funk-based rock is what the band presents in this track, and it's surprisingly entertaining. Watching Waiting is the obligatory power ballad of the album, and it's a very good one. Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today) features Nuno's best guitar on the entire album. Cool lyrics too. What's not to love?Teacher's Pet is classic heavy glam rock. Reminds me of Van Halen's Hot For Teacher, ironic considering where Gary ended up! Big Boys Don't Cry is another good track - it's one of those hard glam rockers. Smoke Signals presents listeners with classic, funk-based rock. Flesh 'N' Blood is classic eighties glam rock at its best. Rock a Bye Bye is slowest ballad on the album. The orchestral touch was a good idea. We close things out with Play With Me. Fast and frantic rock, these kinds of songs are what the band did best. Overall, this is a very good album, though certainly not the band's best or most polished work.

Extreme's albums are long since out of print. It seems like a lot of classic eighties metal act's albums have fallen into this fate, and it really pisses me off. Record companies never seem to give fans what they want, so I wouldn't count on finding this new in any store. More likely than not, you're just gonna have to order it on online.

Overall, Extreme's debut is excellent. It's a little uneven at times (as other reviews have stated), but it's still a good album through and through. If you're a fan of Queen, Poison, and/or David Lee Roth-era Van Halen, I think you'll like Extreme, since they sound like a fusion of those three bands. If you're into eighties glam rock, don't overlook Extreme - they're some of the unsung heroes of the genre - and they've got a sound like no one else.

Aside from the killer classic "Hold On Loosely", this album kicks some serious butt with "First Time Around", "Hittin and Runnin" and Bring It On. These songs make me smile and tap my feet. Brings back great memories from my wilder days. Needs to played at high volume. Don Barnes' lead vocals give me chills.

FIVE STARS AFTER DRINKING WHISKEY!!!!!!!!!!
.38 SPECIAL were the southern rock band that made it into the eighties with numerous hit songs. Fronted by Donnie Van Zant, the brother of Skynyrds Ronnie Van Zant, these guys were a hard rockin' tail chasin' bar band, that really cooked up some hot chops. Not as kick ass as Skynyrd, but what kind of a*hole compares. They have a totally different sound. Actually, they are closer to sounding like Journey than they are like Skynyrd, but I love this stuff, when I'm way drunk at the bar. I like to select this album on the Online Jukebox, especially if theres a fine looking floozy bendin' over the pool table. HOLD ON LOOSELY, they always start shakin' it! BACK ALLEY SALLY is a sure fire pleaser too! The title track and pretty much the whole thing is good. ROCK AND ROLL!

.38 Special's fourth album in 1981 excellently blends southern rock vibe with melodic hard rock. Jim Peterik known as Survivor's keyboardist and songwriter was instrumental in adding melodic hard rock vibe penning HOLD ON LOOSELY which became their first major hit and FANTASY GIRL second single which became a minor hit. Jim Peterik also co-wrote HITTIN' AND RUNNIN' and WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYS, the title track. HOLD ON LOOSELY is one of my all time favorite songs among the excellent songs Jim have created so far including Survivor. At the latter part Lynard influenced nice southern rock can be tasted. Essential for early 80s pop rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars .38 Special's Second Great One In A Row.......2002-09-23

WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS was .38 Special's second great album in a row. The first two cuts- "Hold On Loosely" and "First Time Around", as well as "Hittin' And Runnin'"- are downright cautionary in their lyrical content; the title track is pure boogie heaven; and "Fantasy Girl" is simple Southern pop-rock. A few songs are filler, but the great ones make this album worthy of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars .38 before they sold out.......2000-09-08

This CD has the classic .38 Special sound before they went top 40. Nothing fancy here---just some good old southern rock 'n roll. "Hold on Loosely" is hands down the best song they have ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars "No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones!".......2006-03-21

Clash Instrumentals...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??

But, this also has some of Strummer & Company's greatest early-years vocal tracks - "Jail Guitar Doors" (amazing), "Gates Of The West," "Capital Radio Two" (better than the original by far), and "Groovy Times" to name a few. 1977 has to be my favorite song here, simply because it's my personal Clash anthem: the ending of the song has Strummer belting out, "1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 198-FAW!" I don't know exactly what he was talking about, or why he chose to end on 1984....but Joe Strummer counting out from the year of punk rock's birth to the year of my birth? That's awesome enough that I don't need to ask why.

Another standout track is the 8 minute+ "Justice Tonight/Kick It Over." This is an extended studio version of a dub song the Clash played live throughout almost their whole career, "Armaggideon Time," which can finally be found on CD (on the "Live: From Here To Eternity" disc). What an amazingly great song. The groove lulls you in so completely that the false stop halfway through the song is guaranteed to get you every time, even if you've heard it a thousand times like I have by now.

"Mustapha Dance," a dance remix of "Rock The Casbah" that is almost lyricless, as well as "The Cool Out," a completely lyric-free remix of the Sandinista track "The Call Up," really came as a revelation to me. You think of the Clash as being all about the lyrics, so it's weird to discover that they put out dance remixes for borgeouis (sp?) American white kids to dance to, but they did do it--twice. It makes more sense now that I've read the Strummer biography, "Joe Strummer and the Legend of The Clash," by Kris Needs. Kris Needs is a pretty cool guy who, it turns out, provided the howls and various other strange vocal parts ot certain Clash songs. Anyway, the dance remixes make sense for this reason: Strummer was the one behind the lyrics; and while Mick and the others were on board with his politics in the early days of the band, towards the end they just wanted to be rock stars. At the same time, Mick had been to New York City a few times and was becoming a huge fan of the emerging style called hip-hop. So it was natural for Mick to want to make beat-heavy (that is, rap-influenced) and feel-good (i.e., danceable) versions of Clash songs. And that's basically the reason that Joe fired him - he stopped caring about the politics.

I've probably given the wrong impression. You don't have to care about the band's history to enjoy this disc. If you want to own one of the best rarities albums ever released in the history of music, with a good mix of biting social commentary and feel-good party music, then get Super Black Market Clash ASAP.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic.......2006-02-17

Super Black Market Clash is exactly what a B-sides album should be: a handful of gems ("1977," "Groovy Times," "Pressure Drop"), some experimentation ("Justice Tonight/Kick it Over," "Radio Clash"), but ultimately uneven. I have been put on the record as saying that a B-sides album isn't worth anything if it isn't uneven (well, on the record because I just wrote it now). If the band doesn't have some failures then they're really not trying, are they? They're just spending time lounging in the safe zone. There's nothing terribly wrong with the safe zone, it's nice, I'd visit, but I sure wouldn't want to live there. The two biggest critical darlings had some massive failures. Radiohead's first album was absolutely grating (and not in an avante garde sort of way) and in my personal opinion the Beatles were mediocre until Help!. That being said, some of the songs off the second half of the album fall a bit flat. Even so, they're all interesting to listen to and don't permanently scar the album. Most of them show The Clash trading in their gut level impact for some more experimental music.

Super Black Market Clash is just the fix for those of you who have already bought the first three CDs (which I recommend doing immediately if you haven't already). It's a great career spanning picture of the most eclectic punk band.

4 out of 5 stars Bankrobber and Armagideon Time would have made it 5.......2005-12-05

..I happen to be a true fan of The Clash and i really enjoy Black Market Clash, however i'm quite disappointed at the omission of Bankrobber and Armagideon Time. I've acquired these tracks on a copy of "story of the clash vol. 1" so i'm still able to enjoy them, but Black Market Clash suffers without them.
However...
The City of the Dead, The Prisoner, Pressure Drop, Groovy Times, Gates of the West, Capital Radio Two, and Stop The World are some of the best Clash tracks I've heard and make this album very enjoyable.
As for the dubs... i can't stand Justice Tonight/Kick it Over, or Robber Dub. The Magnificent Dance is okay but the song really needs lyrics to be good, same with The Cool Out. The Mustafa Dance is an enjoyable dub of Rock The Casbah though

3 out of 5 stars Aggravating!.......2005-07-25

I loved the original Black Market , especially for Bank robber Armiggdeon time and was gravely disappointed to not find them here. The replacement dubs here are awkward, cutting some vocals off in mid-word. I was wondering if these are original outakes or something thrown together more recently. Does anybody know? I guess the problem here is that when your so familiar with the orginal, any differences are disturbing to the flow and expectation you have for the song.

1 out of 5 stars Super Black Market Ripoff.......2005-07-17

Nothing signifies the greed involved in the Clash reissues more than this CD. I had the original 10" vinyl edition of "Black Market Clash," and it was a gem, full of non-album singles and B-sides from the early and middle portions of the Clash's career. Unfortunately, Sony has taken most of the best songs from the original "Black Market Clash" and has made them available only on various greatest hits CDs or the "Clash on Broadway" box set. The new "Super Black Market Clash" retains only a few of the original tracks and replaces the missing songs with less interesting tracks from the "Sandinista" and "Combat Rock" eras.

The net effect is that to obtain all of the songs on the original record, one must buy multiple CDs, resulting in the repurchase of songs already appearing on the proper Clash albums. The music originally obtainable on a single vinyl LP is now disaggregated and unreasonably expensive to bring back together. Unfortunately, the mishandling of this reissue has made this once great record a shadow of its former self.

5 out of 5 stars One of the rare ones.......2006-07-23

I was home from college in San Diego for the summer of 1975, listening to the radio when out of the blue they played WPOD. It was one of those rare times that I heard something on the radio that made me stop immediately what I was doing and rush to the record store to buy it. I took it back with me to PA to school where no one had ever heard of them, even the most avid music fans who "discovered" everything. I literally had people swarming to my dorm room to hear The Tubes.

I loved every minute of this album and still do. Probably one of my top 10.

5 out of 5 stars An Album of "8" tracks........2005-01-14

I have to put justice to right in this space. Apart from a few reviewers who dare mention anything on the "former side one" or "the first four songs" of this album, there is a definite lack of appreciation or understanding of what The Tubes were about or what their eponymous album has to offer.

"Up from the deep", the opening track is wonderful working of themes, complicated yet together, the musical textures and intricate musicianship certainly make listening to this track a must. Not only that, "It sounds great". Tempo changes, screaming, trickling synthesiser patterns, tricky guitar and keyboard layers ... definitely one that has been missed in the reviews. If you dont listen to this one you'll regret it.

"Haloes" and "Space baby" - you just have to listen to these to appreciate them, admittedly they are not going to end up in the charts (hit parade), thank goodness, there is rarely anything good there anyway! They don't write songs like this anymore, and it is a shame, because these songs were not written, they were crafted. That's the difference. None of your "I wrote this song in 3 minutes" here ! I am a Tubes fan there is no doubt, but I am also a musician and i appreciate the "craft".

"Malaguena Salerosa" is fun ! The Tubes have reminded us that music is to be enjoyed and revelled in. This album does it ... time and again.

Of course, Mondo Bondage, What do you want from life?, Boy Crazy and the fantastic "White punks on dope" may have been the tracks most focused on, but if you ignore the "other four" you are doing yourselves and The Tubes a great injustice. This is a 100% experience - Don't miss it !

3 out of 5 stars Debut Album.......2004-10-13

The Tubes debut album is great if for no other reason than the introduction to their unique sound. Back in the mid 70s such deep, complex, background rich production was not common. That along with the groups "strange bend" made this a standout album at the time of its release, and this is not taking into account what a live Tubes show was all about. I always liked the Tubes studio work better than their live stuff because I always truly liked their songwriting and musicianship. While many knew and remember the Tubes for their outrageousness, there were some awsome musicians in this band. Prarie prince on drums, Roger Allen Steed and Spooner on guitar. Of course, Waybill's lyrics and delivery are also one of a kind. But songs such as "Mondo Bondage' with its rich production value that included a heavy bottom produced by electronica, and "Boy Crazy" with its languid, minor-chord driven melody have stayed in my mind for nearly thirty years. Yeah, "What Do You Want From Life" and "White Punks On Dope" are certainly classics, but it is songs like "Haloes" that demonstrate the true value of the Tubes music. Later Tubes releases are fantastic and certainly demonstrate an evolution of this band over time, but their first album started it all and should be heard by anyone who thinks they might be interested in this one of a kind product of a time long ago.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead Of Their Time!.......2004-07-13

This is one of those rare audio gems by a group that was way ahead of their time. First released in the 1975, the songs "What Do You Want From Life?" and "White Punks On Dope" steal the show, and best personify the early Tubes. These funny & sardonic rants against materialism work beautifully. The Tubes consistently nailed these themes in true funky-artsy form. Groups like Talking Heads got lots of nods for their satirical odes in the the 1980s, but The Tubes nailed it earlier, and in my opinion, much better!

This is a very decent album. I am not a huge fan, but this album and Special Forces are true classic rock albums. There is not a bad track on this CD. And some of these are some really good rockers!!!

Unfortunately, this was the last good album .38 Special made.

5 out of 5 stars Music Lover.......2005-09-09

I have been a huge fan of .38 Special for a long time. This album, "Strength in Numbers" has been my favorite. I have the album and cassette but not the CD. This album has the best of the songs they have released.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Rock and Roll Album from 38 Special!!.......2004-04-10

"Strength in Numbers" is the 1986 album release from Southern Arena rockers 38 Special. At the time, the band was at the peak of a winning streak crafting albums of upbeat melodic pop-rock with a slight Country tinge. This album is no exception. It's a fantastic album from beginning to finish and displays the band's tight musicality and hook-filled songwriting at its best.
Guitarist Don Barnes is mostly up front on lead vocals here while main lead singer Donnie Van Zant takes a step back from the microphone until the very end of the album bringing it to a dynamic finish on its final two tracks.
Tracks such as the hits "Somebody Like You" and "Like No Other Night" were all over the airwaves when this album was released. Other standouts such as "Last Time", "Just A Little Love", "Hearts On Fire" and "Against The Night" are impossible to dislike and contain enough hooks to have you humming in no time. The slower tracks ("Once In A Lifetime" and "Has There Ever Been A Good Goodbye") are equally enjoyable and shows the band tackling ballads as effortless as their trademark rock numbers.
With all this said, "Strength In Numbers" is a great album and a wonderful trip down memory lane. The album also marked the end of an era for 38 Special. Two years later, the band regrouped with a new line-up without guitarist/singer Don Barnes. Barnes did return to the band a decade later bringing back its signature sound.
If you can find a copy of "Strength In Numbers" (as I was fortunate enough to find), pick it up. It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Gem........2003-12-23

In many ways, it's a mix of their early 80s hard Country tinged rock, and the arena pop/rock of their next album "Rock & Roll Strategy."

1) Somebody Like You -- Energy packed arena rock minor hit with a slight southern sound. A heartbreak and break-up song these guys do so well. I'm still amazed this didn't become a huge hit.

2) Like No Other Night -- Another small hit. Similar to the first song, but not quite as poppy or catchy.

3) Last Time -- Melodic, only slightly less heavy pop tune about this being the 'Last Time' his girl will get another chance again. I don't think it was actually a hit, but I very vaguely *think* I might have heard it played on the radio. (Keep in mind, I was only about 4 years old when this came out). It's also worthy of being a big hit.

4) Once in a Lifetime -- The first song to be a semi ballad. Not as good as the first three tunes, but another underrated pop masterpiece. Just another reason to pick this entire album up, even if you have a hits package.

5) Just A Little Love -- More of a Country sounding mid tempo rocker, about how 'Just a little love can go a long way.'

6) Has There Ever Been A Good Goodbye -- A good question. LOL. A slightly uptempo southern rock ballad which begs this very question. One of the more pop songs of the album.

7) One in a Million -- Just about the most underrated song in their catalogue. A true ballad, with an '80s poppy, melodic sound. Could have easily been a huge hit. A precursor to what would be on their next album.

8) Hearts on Fire -- A tougher edged mid tempo rocker sure to please fans of the bands' earlier, heavier work. It's less pop and the most Country sounding song on the album, but it still fits in.

9) Against the Night -- A masterpiece which never deserved to be just an album track! Melodic, hard pop/rock arena anthem that's just a lot of fun. As an analogy, imagine Journey or Loverboy performing southern fried rock.

10) Never Give an Inch -- Back to a more basic, mid tempo southern sound. This time, about not giving in. A good, but not great album closer.

I'm not sure if this CD is even in print anymore. If you're into Eddie Money, Georgia Satellites, Lynyrd Skynard; 80 music; or even Country and you see this somewhere, pick it up! The best songs are actually the non-hits.

5 out of 5 stars 38 Specials Best.......2002-12-22

This was also my first 38 Special CD (actually it was an album), and everytime I play it, it ends too soon. Not a bad cut on this CD. There may have been stronger individual songs on their earlier stuff, but there was a big drop off in effort after that one or two songs, where the rest of the CD was not up to the same quality. Don Barnes had a hand in writing seven of the ten cuts here, and he is usually involved in their better songs. Rarely does he write one alone, but even on Flashback (a greatest hits CD), he was involved in eight of the fourteen cuts there. Not trying to put down the others in the band, but I personally enjoy his stuff the most. The song "Like No Other Night" is my personal favorite, but from beginning to end if you are looking for 38 Special's best that is not on a Greatest Hits package, this is the one you want to start with. The only drawback to buying this one first is that you will never be as pleased with any of the others from beginning to end. I have all but their live CD, and have never regreted having any of them.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Who CD.......2004-03-24

For anyone who appriciates good quality music - this album is ideal. For Who fans it's perfect. Ive heard critisms that without Moon, the who have lost it - absolute nonsence if you ask me. Zak Starkey who has been drumming for the who sice '94 is bloody amazing! The ONLY person worthy of moon's stool! Townsend, although old now, is still fantastic, strumming riffs and really pelting his guitar. Daltry has been on better form but he can still pull it off. As for Entwistle, only one word - Amazing ( his solo in 5:15 prooves this. The show as a whole is excellent with an overal performance that seriously rocks. It just highlights that after so long together, The Who are still the best band ever! Both the DVD and CD are worth buying.
The ultimate of all CD's/DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars The original recording was good but this is astounding !!!!.......2004-02-21

Having purchased the original Steamhammer recording when it was first released, I didn't think that anything could top the quality of the original disc, live recordings being what they can be. Often times the sound is muddy or unbalanced or the crowd noise is beefed way too high in the mix. Well, believe me when I tell you that the SACD Hybrid Multi-Channel version completely blows it away. Everything is pristeenly clean and clear with no break ups at any level that I played it at! Pete's guitar (power chords and all) were clear and (unwanted) distortion-free. John's bass was thunderous yet very clear and solid and Zak's drums and cymbals were perfect yet none of the aforementioned instuments got in the way of Roger's vocals. Personally, I wish more cd's were available in this format as it buries the sound quality of a standard cd. If only the prices of SACD discs were more reasonable. Aside from that shortcoming, I recommend this disc wholeheartedly.

4 out of 5 stars Great album--worth having.......2007-07-11

Besides the top 20 hits, I feel that "See Me in Your Eyes" and "One of the Lonely Ones" are fantastic. No bad songs on this album, just some are better than others. Should be part of your collection if you like this type of music. Love Don Barnes' lead vocals!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Southern Rockers.......2006-07-11

I have always been a great fan of Southern Rock. From Skynyrd to Blackfoot. 38 Special is no exception, with members from Donnie Van Zant to Jeff Carlisi, Don Barnes n the rest of the crew. 38 Special are truly a great rock band. Hits like Back Where You Belong n If I'd Been The One. It just doesn't get any better then that! If you like Southern Rock you gotta check this out. Get the party started with the Wild-Eyed Southern Boys and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Eyed Southern Boys' Finest Effort.......2003-11-23

.38 Special is a six-men band featuring twin bass guitars and twin drums often what southern rockers are like. Their sixth album in 1983 may be a bit too defined to be southern rock but is one of the finest albums during that time. Despite the lack of songwriting genius Jim Peterik of Survivor, they could make the greatest song collections with also great songwriting pair Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi. This album produced two top 20 hits IF I'D BEEN THE ONE and BACK WHERE YOU BELONG. Actually these songs were the very reason why I became a 38 Special fan. These hits were well received by Japanese yogaku (western music) fans during the winter of 1983/84. I just started listening to yogaku program and I instantly liked these songs. The rest of the album is also great with Don Barnes' melody-driven mellow vocal. ONE OF THE LONELY ONES, TWENTY CENTURY FOX and ONE TIME FOR OLD TIME are also the highlights of this album.

Recommended for 80's pop rock fans, particularly Foreigner and Survivor fans.

4 out of 5 stars 38 Special Hitting their stride.......2002-12-21

If the whole CD were as good as the first two songs ("If I'd Been the One" and "Back Where You Belong") this would have been a superb CD. As it is, the other seven songs tend to blend together, as many of their others do. However there is nothing here that is terrible, just not as noteworthy as the first two songs. If you are a fan of 38 Special or Southern Rock, this will fit in well with your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2002-10-22

This is my favorite .38 Special CD. I love the ballads on it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever.......2006-01-01

And the soundtrack kicks ass too. Every song in this movie is some great Classic Rock/Country/Hard Rock song, but mostly like Southern Hard Rock. Trooper with an Attitude is a kickass song at the beginning and at the end of the movie. the Nashville Pussy songs rock too, same with The Unband.

4 out of 5 stars Great country-tinged rock collection.......2004-05-25

This soundtrack, like the movie, rules. Everyone else that's reviewed it only talks about that Bubbles song, probably because it's so unlike anything else on the CD. I personally like the whole freakin' thing. You've got the legenday .38 Special weighing in with their original tune "Trooper with an Attitude," then the rest of the soundtrack are tracks from great (though less well-known) country-influenced rock bands and straight-up rock/metal groups. There's a handful of songs from Southern Culture on the Skids, two from Nashville Pussy (who's great!), and "Bad Apples" by Royal Fingerbowl (the soundtrack of choice for the relaxing bada$$). Then you get to the really great stuff: two HILARIOUS songs by Steak (do any other Steak recordings exist?!?!), and two from The Unband, whose CD I picked up on the strength of this soundtrack. Think Motorhead, think Speedealer, think Zeke. Think you got it? This soundtrack is not only awesome, but it's also one of the few soundtracks where all (or most) of the songs were in the movie, worked in context of the movie, sound great on their own, and remind you of your favorite scenes in the movie. Awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Like the movie? You'll love the CD...........2004-02-21

The song-Bidibodi Bidibu is from the Porsche chase scene when they pull over the swingers. This song is cool to blast in you car. I love all the songs on the CD, of course I loved the movie and if you did too....You'll love the CD.

If you liked the soundtrack, you need to give a listen to "Southern Culture on the Skids". They have some really great, really funny stuff. Enjoy!!
