Exciting, eclectic Caterina Valente!.......2007-01-27

Dutton Labs has brought together two of the best international pop records ever recorded on one compact disc. The always amazing Caterina Valente sings everything from Lecuona's "The Breeze and I" and "Malaguena" to Jobim's "You and I". Valente can move from semi-classical to straight pop to jazz effortlessly and makes you believe that you are hearing these tunes for the first time. These recordings are a joy -- you will find yourself playing these gems over and over. I have been listening to international artists like Mireille Mathieu and Nana Mouskouri for years, but Caterina never disappoints. Her approach to a song is always unique, for instance, the song "People" from Funny Girl (a song I have always loathed), is treated with an upbeat, jazzy style, that will leave you wanting more. The American standards "Melancholy Baby" and "Just One of Those Things" are approached in the same way and the impact is fresh and exciting. The Latin tunes are simply amazing -- the Bonfa and Jobim selections are exquisite and the prevailing mood is indeed intimate. The accompaniments could not have been better -- they fit the mood of each selection. True artistry all round. In my opinion, these are two remarkable recordings, and I thank Dutton for rescuing them from the Decca vaults. The recordings are from 1965 and 1966 respectively, and the Dutton transfers are superb. Don't miss these recordings!

A singer who can swing and scat like a jazz pro, Caterina keeps things on the upbeat most of the way. Her very talented Brother Silvio plays a key role in her act, first coming on as her clarinet soloist in “Air Mail Special” and then matching her singing, dancing, guitar and tambourine playing in a bossa nova classic. Since the show was form Heidelberg, she went to the streets with legendary Hollywood choreographer Nick Castle as the two of them danced through the city a la “An American in Paris”. Caterina is a performer who knows her music, as she displayed flawless movement in time with the orchestrations, animating herself with expressive, perfectly timed hand movements. Her voice is clear and vibrant and a perfect delight to hear. I have been a fan of Caterina for many years..Never seen her perform until this DVD from Heidelberg..I wish I could have seen her in person but this makes up for everything. One of the top female vocalist of our times

Skip everything else, and get this while you can. It's the famed "Caterina from Heidelberg" TV special that aired in 1968, and we are unlikely to experience ANYTHING like this again. Thanks to Caterina's son, this is finally available. Caterina Valente's incredible here--this bundle of so much talent doesn't come around often. A unique performance from a unique performer. In a previous review I had had problems with the DVD playing here in the United States, but it was my player, an older (circa 1997) DVD player. The DVD plays perfectly on the new player--it is PAL format, but not region coded. The sound on the CD is brilliant stereo. I couldn't be happier with this product.

I've seen the tv-special and caught her act at the Flamingo in Vegas in the late 60ies and was mesmerized by hear talent and vitality!
For anyone who wants to experience this legendary performer at her absolute peak, do not miss this extraordinary package(strange that it is not mentioned here that it contains 1 DVD and 1 CD!!!)
In the same league as Sammy Davis Jr.! (Did they ever perform together???)

The Caterina Valente Collection : The Breeze and I.......2006-03-01

Caterina Valente's voice and style have not changed since the first time I heard her sing The Breeze and I way back in the sixties, it was then on the long-playing vinyl record. I like her strong voice giving spice and life to the music like Poinciana, Jalousie and Granada.

This CD album includes some of her old songs with more recent ones sung in her usual style makes it a pleasure to own.

The recordings of the old titles with the modern CD technology really adds to the enjoyment in listening to her sing again.

I can't believe that I actually found this artist (let alone multiple selections)on compact disc! I still have a vinyl copy of her HI FI Nightingale record from my childhood, although it is quite worn. Finding Miss Valente's amazing voice preserved for future generations gives me hope. If you have never heard Catrina Valente sing before you will be amazed... very like a European Yma Sumac in terms of her range, but far more versitile and talented. The arrangement on "Secret Love", among others, seems particularly innovative. Overall a must have for those who truly appreciate the great vocal stylists of this period.

nostalgic, elegant, wonderful.......2001-01-09

I have been a great fan of Caterina Valente since I was a kid, watching her variety show on German television. Already back then I was fascinated with all the different styles she mastered in her clear and expressive voice. Back then I had no idea that she recorded so many songs in english (and other languages). I came across this CD almost by accident and it brought back wonderful memories of her old records and her show. The sound quality is excellent and does her performance justice. With the revival of classical swing and the swank music of the ffties and sixties, Caterina should not be overlooked. She is in a class of her own.

Simply an excellent CD. This album contains many of the great songs from my cherished possession of Caterina Valente LPs; however, there are many more songs from The Hi-Fi Nightingale, Toast To The Girls, Plenty Valente, etc. albums that I would like to see on a sequel or two to this CD. I hope this wish would be a reality soon.

I remember hearing Caterina Valente's "The Breeze and I" while riding in a pickup truck on a Texas Panhandle road in 1955. It was glorious! I lost a 33-rpm copy of her "Hi-Fi Nightingale" in a house move in 1981, and have been looking for some type of replacement ever since. I just received from Amazon.com the C.V. Collection, and it is great! Caterina sings again!

Latin music at its most enchanting.......2007-06-16

I own the original records, including three copies of "Fire & Frenzy". I have not been able to purchase the CD yet. "Fire and Frenzy" is certainly one of the most enchanting records ever in this reviewer's opinion. Valente's vocals are simply delightful, and the scatting between Ros and Valente on "Saudades Da Bahia" is sheer playfulness. Obviously, both performers, Ros as a Latin bandleader, and Valente the first truly international star who could sing in six languages, had a strong affinity for the melodies and rhythms of Latin America. On this record most of the standards are from Brazil. I discovered Latin music when I started ballroom dancing, and while the record is more for listening than dancing, it perfectly captures the romance, breezy air, and playfulness of Latin music, coupled with the usual strong melodies and intricate rhythms. So it was worth waiting all these years to have this material finally released on CD. "Fire & Frenzy", indeed.
