5 out of 5 stars beautiful recording.......2006-12-30

One of the best recording of the year, with joey De Francesco the organ jazz will survive for many years.........

5 out of 5 stars Incomparable musicianship from DeFrancesco & friends.......2006-11-15

There's a wind of change with Joey DeFrancesc's new "Organic Vibes" album on Concord Records - this output signals a major change in his musical direction both as a soloist, leader and organist. After many (too many?) tribute albums to and with the late great Jimmy Smith, which ended with their joint "Legacy" album on Concord Records in 2005, DeFrancesco has closed a chapter in his musical development. "It was time for change" DeFrancesco told the press. The prescription for DeFrancesco's new direction of development seems to be an obvious but surprising one - first teaming up with his regular rhythm section of the ever-swinging and tasteful Byron Landham behind the drumset and the surprisingly talented guitar rookie Jake Langley, then adding on unexpected notable musicians from their own genre - and the result is an excellent album. But DeFrancesco made an unusual decision on who to add as sidemen for "Organic Vibes" - the forth member of the group is the incomparable Bobby Hutcherson (all superlatives on him have been used by others...) on vibes and making the quintet complete with Ron Blake on saxes and flute. Jazz organ friends will remember the stunning pairing of Big John Patton's organ and Bobby Hutcherson's vibes on Patton's legendary Blue Note album "Let Em' Roll" from 1965. "Organic Vibes" takes the organ / vibes format interaction to the next level of musicality when the group is exploring the compositional territories of DeFrancesco's self penned memorable tunes like the boppish "The Tackle", the Larry Young'ish "Down The Hatch" and the lovely shuffle "Colleen". "I Thought About You" is being treated for some 9 minutes of a beautiful and stunning trio interplay between Hutcherson, DeFrancesco and Landham. On the Latin beat inspired "Little B's Poem", Ron Blake displays his proven versatility on flute with some inspiring choruses. Adding George Coleman, tenor sax, on some of the tunes gives the album another bonus.

Joey DeFrancesco comps and plays at his peak level on Jimmy Smith's personal Hammond B-3 from 1959, donated to him by the Jimmy Smith Estate, and we can hear a change in his approach of using the drawbar registrations and dynamics, registration changes and the use of the Leslie speakers. The recipe is leslie on stop, 3 first drawbars out and no chorus on the organ to obtain a "dry and straight" organ sound - and what an outstanding sounding B-3!

Great album, great performances and DeFrancesco proves again that he's the baddest jazz organ burner in the industry (together with Dr. Lonnie Smith, not to forget).

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy's spirit lives on..........2006-11-03

This is serious stuff, and all the musicians are superb. After Jimmy Smith's passing, Joey carries on with passion, skill, and ingenuity.

4 out of 5 stars key CLICK...........2006-06-29

again a nice piece of work from jd...however the only thing i didn't care for much was the key click mix of the organ...i like hammond b3 percussion as much as the next guy but the way it was mixed it sounded a bit too digital and too far out in the mix...that withstanding...give the cd a try...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-04-27

This is a wonderful album. Defrancesco's restraint is powerful--he builds up tension, comps inventively, and now and then releases the tension and lets loose with some magical runs. Bobby Hutcherson is superb. I never tire of listening to him, he seems to always find new things to say. Ron Blake is solid, as is the rest of the band. THe sound production is great..this is just a wonderful session, the best CD I've purchased so far this year. It passed the most stringent test of all: when it was finished, I wanted to put it back in and start all over again. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars an exotic, twisted fantasy world of sound........2007-06-08

although i don't know that i will ever _like_ Pierre Boulez's music that much, I still find it among the most interesting in all of western art music. here is an emotionally gripping exception in his catalogue, however: _le marteau sans maitre_ for alto, alto flute, guitar, vibes, xylorimba, percussion, and viola. The obvious reference point for such a work is clearly Schoenberg's _Pierrot lunaire_, which serves as more than partial inspiration. The comparison is important, because _pierrot lunaire_ is the most spiritually/emotionally intense work of expressive 20th century music. now boulez's work does not exactly reach that level, but it has a more organic, more lyrical nature than the works of earlier Boulez, like his piano sonatas, the _Structures_, or _explosante-fixe_. Both pieces feature vocals with small chamber groups, although in Boulez's work the instrumental selection is more unconventional and lends itself to a very different timbral effect, and the soprano does not actually sing in all nine movements. (both works complement each other nicely and together make for good listening on a rainy evening)

perhaps too much comparison for my liking, so the individual personality of this work needs emphasis. This is of the first Boulez works to escape the severe self-restrictions of pure serialist methodology. this must partly be the reason that _le marteau..._ is startlingly lyrical, free of the barrenness that makes much of this post-war contempory music very `samey' and prosaic. It also has a strange immediacy that is more "of this earth" than his more alien music. the first movement is startling for its sheer beauty, urgent and strange guitar chords, eerie percussion and gentle strokes of the viola. Later there is a familiar trait found here, which is the way in which Boulez masterfully manipulates the cyclical, intertwined nature of the movements. Its structure is not rigid mosaic components, but notions that are provisional, plastic, and self-modifying - its engrossing transformations arcane but emotionally charged. This is perhaps easier to see if one changes the order of movements to 1,3,7 in the first part, 2,4,6 in the second part, and 5,9 at the end, although doing this causes a loss of dramatic effect. `bourreaux de solitude' would have to show any dullard the potential for enigmatic beauty in the pejoratively titled `atonal music'. In faster, brighter, more rhythmically intense movements there is a calmness and wonderful lack of irony. although all throughout its metric direction is weirdly timeless, there appears to be a jazz-like pulse barely perceptible especially on the `commentaires' II and III. The singing is very good, the best on the last movement where the music is ultra-jagged but the vocals like a cool breeze. i have read that this performance is slower and mellower than Boulez's previous ones -- I can only think it was meant to sound like this.

_derive 1_ for six instruments (flute, clarinette, violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano) and _derive 2_ for 11 instruments (horn, english horn, clarinette, bassoon, violin, alto, cello, vibraphone, marimba, harp, and piano) are very nice. I am too lazy to write more about them, but they are relatively minor works anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Boulez high interpretive visions; to himself for a change........2006-05-19

you can never argue with good playing of music, even if the music itself is utterly dull and uninspired, although I have played music where no amount of interpretive imagination could have saved it;here we have inspired aggressive playing, in tune,well-balanced,and razor-sharp timbres exhibited, that in itself compells the ear to listen more,it instills a direct committment to the timbre, the ultimate meaning of music, this interface is one Boulez knows quite well, and as he has said himself no amount of wiggling gesticulating in convulsions on the podium will make the music any more interesting; that's not what you get herein however; "The Hammerless Master"when written was perhaps the most highly imitated work of the post-serial period, mostly academic Americans where everybody thought they could "out-Boulez", Boulez, well we have a lotta music now that is collecting dusk in those corridors.Boulez was more attuned to creating a new context for serial creativity a renewal of one with usuable timbres(Orient-Occidental) circling the globe, the gamelan timbre is certainly here,as well as the complexity of serial procedures. There are infintesimal harmonies created with the interesting combinations of acoustic guitar, viola, alto flute, percussion bongoes(primarily vibraphone).I never grow tired of this work, but Boulez's instincts for seeing interpretive dimensions no one else does is/are always worth pursuing(as his readings of un-Tchaikovsky-like Stravinsky, very lean and mean Berg, then Mahler and Bruckner) here in his own music he allows himself to find new points of pursuable interest as his more lyrical sensual "Hammerless Master" reveals. I still find the vocal writing however problematic, as if it is beside the meaning of the text, just another instrumental part thrown upwards; the voice has a kind of "other-wordly" place, not a conveyor of meaning but more of "ambience","mists" of an opaque situation. This recording trys to "fix" or "re-tune" this emotive role-bearing aspect of Rene Char's powerful text to some degree. Now if that is intended and if you find that compelling well no one can argue with this.
In "Derive" as well Boulez again here pursues yet another reading(like a cantus firmus) of his 1994 piano solo later revised in 2001, "Incises" translated as the "cuttings" as like a river may "cut" a continent in half, or the fine lattice work, the lapidarian shapes of nettles cutting a metal image in miniature. Here the gestures are fairly obvious, and I agree with the other reviewer who finds that the work grows dull and arbitrary in its discoursal direction.I first heard Derive 1 along side Dufourt's powerful "Antiphysis"(for larger forces) which drew the more sketchlike "unfinished" qualities in the Boulez all the more pronounced. It does have an affinity for late Debussy, with its find, pulled-backwards gestures, gentle tremoli, exposed fine elegant bourgeois melodic lines.

5 out of 5 stars Boulez Returns to Conducting Boulez!.......2005-12-10

Pierre Boulez has become a name synonymous with masterful conducting of clarity, revealing inner voices of a work, while transforming the classics into thrillingly alive and refreshing experiences. His Mahler, Wagner, Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartok etc performances and recordings rarely fail to open vistas to those of us who thought we knew favorite scores well. It should be no surprise then that his new recording of his now 'old modern works' sound soothingly new under his baton.

'Le marteau sans maître, for alto, alto flute, guitar, vibes, xylorimba, percussion & viola' was a success at its premiere way back in 1955 - music that changed the palette of sound and timbre yet remained accessible. Here Boulez finesses his old recordings and in this splendid, clear, transformative reading confirms that this work is a masterpiece. The Ensemble Intercontemporain plays as though the members grow out of Boulez' fingertips and Hilary Summers lush and perfectly focused mezzo-soprano voice traverses the impossible melismata with ease and conveys the beauty of the poetry. The performance is a knockout!

Dérive I, for flute, clarinet, piano, vibes, violin & cello and
Dérive II, for chamber ensemble are later works and now find far more interest than intial hearings. The palette of sound and rhythmic variations is startling and beautifully performed. This is a fine recording on all counts and one that certainly belongs in the collection of those who follow Boulez in all his myriad accomplishments. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

4 out of 5 stars A new, mellower Marteau.......2005-06-25

On its comparatively rare appearances in concert, Pierre Boulez's Le Marteau sans maitre--the work that made his name as a composer--continues to divide audiences, some seeing it as a perfect example of sterile post-war modernism, others echoing the positive reaction of figures such as Igor Stravinsky and Otto Klemperer, who saw it as a vital contribution to post-war art. The composer has now made his fourth recording, examining his early music from a vantage point fifty years later on, perhaps providing a good time to re-evaluate the work.

Previous recordings (particularly the early recordings) have tended to emphasise the work's spikiness as well as the glittering colours that come from its remarkable alto-register ensemble (flute, guitar, viola, vibraphone, xylorimba and percussion). However, Boulez's new reading focuses more on the music's lyrical aspects, perhaps siting it in a context of late Debussy and song cycles such as Ravel's Mallarmé poems. Hillary Summers' voice seems to have been chosen specifically with that in mind--warm and creamy, it suits very well Boulez's gentler tempo and emphasis on the sensual over the radical. Perhaps this recording will feel too low-voltage for those used to the early recordings of the work, but, on the other hand, it might also make new friends for the work (never before has Bourreaux de solitude sounded so lyrical, so French).

Given the manner in which the performance of Marteau refracts early Boulez through a late-Boulez prism, it's perhaps appropriate that the couplings are of comparatively recent works. Dérive 1 is a luscious miniature for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone and piano, six minutes of pure wallowing in sound. The largely unrelated Dérive 2 (making its debut on disc) is a little more problematical. Written for a larger ensemble (cor anglais, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello, vibraphone, marimbaphone, harp and piano) it takes the 'never-ending spiral' structure of Sur Incises, and works out its material over twenty-five minutes of oscillations between various rhythmic figures. At times the music sounds delectable, but I find that after a while it starts to pall--it's less fun than Sur Incises and sometimes the progress of the work seems rather arbitrary.

The performances are mostly exemplary, as one would expect from Boulez's own ensemble, though I marginally prefer the composer's earlier recording of Dérive 1 on Erato. Convinced Marteau admirers will no doubt want to hear this distinctly different interpretation of the work--others may feel differently.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Mr Boulez!!!.......2005-05-14

Le Marteau Sans maître is one of the most important works of the Twentieth Century . It is a work that symbolize, by its austerity and rationalist process of composition , the essence of the second vanguard of the century. After years of a Neo Classical process (1920-1950) , the new generation, born in the twenties , rediscovering Webern and Schoenberg , were ready to change the history. The serialism was at its peak: timbres , durations, dynamics, everything was pre determinate. Le Marteau sans Maitre can be read as a new way to see one of the most important works of the first half of the twentieth century: Pierrot Lunaire, by Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg wrote this work in three parts, with different subjects in each of the three parts. Pierre Boulez handle with three parts too: There are three songs based in three poems by Rene Char. And each song has one instrumental precedent or commentary. But the order isn't easy to understand: Lets take the three first movements of the work:it begins with a intricate fast scherzo: it is one precedent of the song L'artisanat furieux. Than we have a commentary of another song :Bourreaux de solitude. Than for the first time one of the songs: L'artisanat furieux. This one is a clear homage to Schoenberg. As in the seventh song of Pierrot Lunaire , we have hear a music to voice and solo flute. And as in Pierrot Lunaire, Boulez controls the extension of the pauses between the movements of the work. The sounds of Le Marteau sans maitre include exotic sounds like the African ( and very popular in Bahia-Brazil) Agôgô and the Caribbean Maracas. And the end of the work evokes something of oriental music. The surrealist texts are placed in a very sophisticated atmosphere . The result is fantastic. At the end we have a fusion between the voice and the instruments. If you don't have to play or to conduct this work, forget all the difficulties of the score. Enjoy the sounds, the ambience and the fantastic relations between text and music.
Before this recent performance Pierre Boulez recorded several times this work. There are two of these versions that are remarkable: one with the mezzo Jeanne Deroubaix ( the flutist in this record was the fantastic Severino Gazzeloni) and other with the famous Canadian Mezzo Yvonne Minton ( with fantastic musicians as the percussionist Sylvio Gualda and the flutist Michel Debost). I would like to remember that there is one very interesting old recording ( in LP) conducted by Robert Craft, and curiously this is the only one to follow the crazy metronomic marcs of the score. Boulez himself never followed his metronomic indications, and this new recording is the slower of all. The young musicians of the Ensemble Intercontemporain play this music as if it were easy. As never before we have hear a fluency and one constant beauty of sound. The Mezzo Soprano Hilary Summers has a beautiful voice and her intonation is simply perfect. Her range is perfect for this music. In short: this is the most fluent and the most perfect performance of Le Marteau sans Maître . And technically the sound of the recording is outstanding . As a bonus we have two other masterpieces: Dérive 1( 1984) and the wonderful Dérive 2 ( concluded in 2002). This recent composition has some instrumental colors of a profound beauty. Written for 11 instruments, it shares the atmosphere of Sur Incises and of Répons. Dérive 2 is a testimony of the energy of this young 80 years old composer. Maybe the most important musician of the second half of the twentieth century. This recording gives you the opportunity to know compositions that aren't easy. But no one can deny that these are works among the really more important works of the last 50 years. These works deserve your attention .

Album Description

Take two and a half years, four share-houses, 757 op-shop records, a few thousand dollars lost to dodgy housemates, 2565 hours of community library customer service, 20,000 km of round-Australia travel, countless computer crashes and one critical hard-disk failure, and you have a rough diary for the recording process of the new record by Gotye (pronounced 'gore-ti-yeah'). All sounds on the album were collected and assembled or performed by Wally De Backer in bedrooms around Melbourne between 2003 and 2005, and the record was mixed and mastered by Franc Tetaz (Wolf Creek soundtrack, Machine Translations, Architecture in Helsinki) giving it a beautiful hi-fi depth and brilliance that goes beyond Wally's lo-fi gem Boardface (2004). Musically, it's another mixed bag with a subtle thread holding it all together- alt-pop with a broad sonic and thematic pallette. The moments of frustration, dissatisfaction and sadness rendered in the spacey dubs of Puzzle With A Piece Missing, Thanks For Your Time's electro-funk pop and the sumptuous orchestra sounds of Hearts A Mess are countered by the unbridled positivity of Learnalilgivinanlovin's homage to Northern Soul, A Distinctive Sound's turntablist kook and the after-life meditations of The Only Way, driven by a Bollywood-pop-meets-psychedelic-dancehall groove.

5 out of 5 stars The new King of cut-and-paste.......2007-05-19

Melbourne, Australia is becoming a hotbed of this type of art, what with the Avalanches and Wally/Gauthier "Gotye" de Bakker. The aim is to produce lush, witty, captivating music by clever editing of huge numbers of multilayered samples. Gotye not only succeeds brilliantly, but also affectionately pastiches a huge range of different genres over the tracks of this album. His previous release "Boardface" was good, but sometimes, the pastiches were a little too close to identifiable source tracks. "Like Drawing Blood" is more polished, to the point where the Gotye tracks are more secure in their own identities. Energy levels are generally higher than the first album, too.

For me, the high spots are the beautiful ballad "Heart's a Mess" (which also has an excellent video) and the satirical "Thanks for your Time": truly a song for the early 21st century ("You have been placed in a queue - your call is valuable, it's so very valuable..."). Others may be more smitten with the driving, modal indie rock of "The Only Way", the soul-influenced "Learnalilgivinanlovin", the drums-n-organ-n-fx of "A Distinctive Sound", or the ethereal Europop of "Night Drive", which is reminiscent of Air. But the whole album is highly listenable.

5 out of 5 stars A great eclectic music blend from down under!.......2007-03-24

What a fantastic discovery! Gotye gives digging for good music a name and meaning! Fans of The Blue Nile, Bent and U.N.K.L.E. alike are bound to be satisfied with "Like Drawing Blood". The work of one guy (Wally De Backer), Gotye's sound in this album has a range that is quite unlike most acts you run into.

He sometimes plays reggae ("Puzzle with a Piece Missing"), sometimes pop ("Thanks for Your Time" sounds quite like Justin Timberlake) and then he can come up with a sound like a sixties pop act like does in "Learnalilgivinanlovin". But the real power of the album is where he delivers hip-hop power like Gorillaz would do ("Distinctive Sound", "Seven Hours with a Backseat Driver") or a sound that clearly reminds that of Paul Buchanan (with The Blue Nile), as in "Night Drive" or the closing track.

All in all, it's not your regular cup of coffee, which is great, because the range he covers will keep you entertained all through the album and wanting more of his great music when you are done with it.

Incognito's third album nods to the influences that ground their jazz-funk-and-soul jams. The 11-member band adds a Latin feel to a snazzy cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," while "Magnetic Ocean" has a Weather Report-in-ballad-mode vibe. "Change" combines Maysa Leak's Chaka Khan-like power with sweeping Soul II Soul-ish strings, and "Need to Know" gives props to Roy Ayers (check the clavinet) and Rick James (horn section). The band is at its best showcasing Leak or featuring soloists, as on "Colibri" and the Mandrill-ish "Closer to the Feeling." Still, some attempts fall flat, like the syrupy "L'Arc en Ciel de Miles" that's more Chuck Mangione than Prince of Darkness. This one's for smooth-jazz aficionados; Brit-funk fans should check the band's later fare. --Suzanne McElfresh

Ain't no doubt about it, this is good music. No correction; this is great music. The Cogs brought their A game on this one. It really is a standout release. Highlights are numerous, but the one that knocks me out is Maya's powerhouse delivery on I Love What You Do For Me. Man! Such emotion.....and what a voice!!! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

3 out of 5 stars Something's lost in the translation of Incognito's "Scribes".......2000-08-15

After some respectable but unremarkable work in the late eighties, British jazz/funk/soul outfit made a wise move in the early nineties with the hiring of vocalist Maysa Leak. Her rich vocals have a honey-colored tone all their own, and she skillfully manages to sound emotionally powerful while maintaining a silky-smooth nuance that makes it all sound effortless. Unfortunately, the material on hand for her Incognito debut, 1993's "Tribes Vibes & Scribes," shows there was still room for improvement.

The most noticeable problem is Leak's lack of elbow room. She's only featured on five tracks, and while she handles them beautifully they don't use her talents to their full potential. The scatted samba "Colibri" is enjoyable, but the repetitive vocal runs leave Maysa the chance to do little else but go through the motions. "Change" is a midtempo delight, featuring lush strings and a trademark Incognito drum lick behind Leak's masterful vocal, but "I Love What You Do for Me" is so strikingly similar it's a surprise some sort of production tooling wasn't attempted. "River of My Dreams" gets off to a dreamy a capella start, but ends up robbed at a length of barely more than a minute.

Of course, this wouldn't be as obvious if the instrumental material were stronger. And while the Yellowjackets-flavored "Magnetic Ocean" and the slinky "Tribal Vibes" deliver, fare like "Closer to the Feeling" and "Pyramids" sound like watered-down Brand New Heavies, closer to the realm of smooth-jazz than the funk that is obviously being attempted. But Maysa's fifth track is worth the price of admission all on its own: her flawless and spirited vocal take a Latin-flavored, horn-laden rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" to the realm of brilliance, making for one of the band's most memorable moments.

Completists of either Incognito or Maysa Leak will no doubt want this in their collection; there are definitely enough worthwhile moments to make it a wise purchase. But in hindsight, "Tribes Vibes & Scribes" is somewhat of a low watermark for a band whose artistry would later reach high tide.

4 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Improvement.......2007-06-21

Over the Destination Rio album, that is. I was so turned off from that album, I probably put up my most negative review ever on this site. There wasn't a fresh spark to it, and it was lacking in sampling what's new and out there. But this one - Latin Vibes, is a major improvement. Admittedly, I didn't know it was Kinkysweet putting it together (I still check out Seamless "BarGrooves" albums from time to time. Had I known, I might've passed based on the Destination album. But I was very pleasantly surprised with this one (although I have yet to give it the test in a computer).

One of the more impressive things about the album is it's truthfulness in the title. It's more of an overall latin vibe... not just "Brazilian Electronica", but there's also Spanish influenced music as well and some great latin house & jazz. Very neat blends. So as not to go through two discs of songs, expect to hear a deep beat, excellent flute work, acoustic guitar and neat effects in the music. A really cool, tripped out latin experience in general, highlighted by Moodswings, Shawn Ward, Favela 5 and others. And that's CD1. CD2 starts out a bit shaky, but eventually warms up. Mondomo's track is a throw-away IMO - I never got into it when I first heard it on Cafe Copacabana. A bit too... not over the top, but the electronic voice takes away from the tune and is a sample that should've been left out. But the entire album really does have a sort of ambient vibe, even if the bossa feels a bit too dramatic. Some top cuts there were Malena's "No Me Digas Nada" (remember their popular "Para Ti" fro ma while back). This track reminds me of some of the old S-Tone Inc. songs from the early 2000's with Manuela Ravagliolli (SP?). Great soul! I thought "Fireside" was pretty interesting too.. nice little touch there with the horns, has a real sort of "Sunset on the West Coast USA" feel. Then the album ends with a pretty dreamy song dedicated to a giant melting pot of latin culture (today), Miami.

So this is a pretty good compilation. Real ambient, latin vibes perfect for lounging. Granted I couldn't listen to disc two all the way through, but there are some terrific songs here. Admittedly, I've had this one for a while but never tried to load it into the pc for iTunes or Rhapsody, Media Player etc. so I couldn't tell you if the wretched copy protect is still on this. If so, I'll adjust the star ranking tomorrow. :) Otherwise, it's a pleasant enough album - not a Brazilectro/Brazilution or Brazilian Love Affair threat by any stretch, but a cut above the criminally priced "Cafe Copacabana" import and obviously better than Frequent Flyer: Rio. So if you like this, check out Brazilectro and Nova Latino. You definitely want to catch the "Latin Deluxe" series, although it's hard to find now. And you'll probably like "New Latinaires" too.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't Lloyd Cole famous?.......2006-03-07

Well? Any one? I don't get it. Great album by the way. One of the best ever made. Scratches head and smokes a cig....

3 out of 5 stars A voice of dissent.......2005-10-21

Songs like "Half of Everything","She's a Girl and I'm a Man","Weeping Wine","Butterfly","You will Never Be No Good" and "Are you Ready to be Heartbroken?" won me over to Lloyd Cole's brand of cynical romanticism (or is it romantic cynicism?). In particular the sweeping grandeur of the string arrangements and melodies on DON'T GET WEIRD ON ME, BABE recalled prime era Jimmy Webb songs for me.

This one...well, let's say I don't get that feeling here. There isn't anything on here that really screams "outtake" (with the possible exception of the overlong "Can't Get Arrested") but all too often it's just a bland middle of the road safeness. The songs are nice while they're playing, but I can't recall them when the disc ends. Even the ones I'm calling "highlights" here are merely the CD's better spots not necessarily great music.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"So You'd like to Save the World" finds Cole chasing a treehugger type and simultaneously castigating her naivete ("Did you really cry/when you saw the hole in the sky?/Did you really hold your head and hide your eyes?") and salivating over her body ("So you'd like to free my world/If you can free my inner child then I can free your inhibitions, baby"). "Love You So What" finds Cole after he's betrayed his lover and discovered what they say about a woman scorned is the truth. ("you beat me up, you put me down/you're slamming my name all over town/guess i'm big enough to roll with the punches/but you bruise me, you abuse me d**n good") It's probably the "poppiest" song on here thanks to an indelible keyboard riff. The gently loping "Wild Mushrooms" is an ode to sex under the influence of less than legal substances, while "Too Much of a Good Thing" marries trip hop with country as twangy guitars collide with insistent drum machine high-hat. Here Cole is probably at his most pragmatic romantically. ("If it's good to me/And it's good to you/won't you stay with me/and i will stay with you..") "Seen the Future" is a snide look at trendy musical acts. ("All my friends do the model girl thing/So I found one, now she wears my nose ring..") "For the Pleasure of Your Company" underscores its tale of a flawed man on the make with menacing tremeloed guitars and dramatic martial drum interludes. (NOTE: This song appears only on this U.S. version..the U.K. version omits it and "4 M.B.")

LOWS:
"Can't get Arrested" should have been titled "Can't Stay Awake". Way...too...long. There's some nicely bitter words in there about Cole's unknown status in the U.S. but it should have been boiled down to a tasty confection instead of this sprawling Viennese torte of a song. "4 M.B." finds Cole a nonentity in his own song..mixed so low that his muffled whisper quite often is a subtle coloring rather than center of the tune.

BOTTOM LINE:
Diehard Cole fans may still want to have this one and it does grow on you more with repeat listenings. However, I've owned this one for around 7 years now and it's still far from a favourite of mine. If you're dipping your toes in because of Cole's presence on so many Amazon lists here, make sure that DON'T GET WEIRD ON ME, BABE is your first exposure, not this disc. Definitely a "hear it first" CD.

3 out of 5 stars Lesser Cole.......2005-06-16

Bad Vibes starts well with Morning is Broken and So You'd Like to Save the World and ends pretty well with 4 M.B. (one of those "who's it about?" songs), but in between there is not much to get excited about. Call this a tame CD. Very soft arrangements, the usual cynical romantic well-crafted lyrics, all of it with little staying power in my book. Sometimes Cole's vocals are so laid back they're barely audible in the already quiet mix. Can't Get Arrested in particular meanders on entirely too long. Mister Wrong and My Way to You are the only other cuts I'd consider keepers.

5 out of 5 stars just plain great music.......2004-09-19

I'm a huge fan of his most popular solo album "Don't Get Weird on Me Babe", but this album is a close second. If you like Lloyd's vocals, this a wonderful album that grows better with each listen. He's an excellent songwriter and crafts atomospheric tunes mixed in with straight ahead rock n'roll.
A very underrated musician and songwriter. If you like his sound at all, this is a great album to have.

5 out of 5 stars His best solo effort.......2002-03-23

After DON'T GET WEIRD ON ME, BABE, I honestly felt that Cole was saying goodbye in some strange way...especially with the last song on that album that ended with such bittersweet melodic strings.

But, no, he came back! I remember going to college when this came out; I lived in England at the time, but was going to school in Colorado--hence, my mother in England was able to get me the UK release before a US release available. She told me the album title and described the cover as "Lloyd Cole slouched in a corner in a really bad mood."

It sent chills down me and the chills were intensified when the guitar rumbled through me with the opening strains of "Morning is Broken." Following that song is Cole's satirical look towards global problems being treated as "fads" in "So You'd Like To Save The World?" There's the darkly sexual tone of "Wild Mushrooms" amongst other wonderful songs on this album.

This album was such a refreshing 180 from DON'T GET WEIRD ON ME, BABE, which was a strange, confused album compared to this straightforward word play observations on self-reflection, relationships, and unabashedly unreserved obsession for a girl with her "natural grace."

In my mind, there are no bad Lloyd Cole albums (Commotions, solo, or Negatives) -- but this is definitely his best solo album.

4 out of 5 stars The mellow side of Hamp.......2006-09-08

This CD combines two LPs Lionel Hampton made for Columbia back in 1958 (GOLDEN) and 1960 (SILVER). Both are pretty much based on the same format: ballad performances with the spotlight on Hamp's vibes along with a rhythm section and a reed quintet added on GOLDEN and a trombone quartet on SILVER. The added horn sections don't do much more than provide chordal color. Hampton is, I think, one of the best, if not THE best ballad player on vibes (as good as Milt Jackson, if not better) and is able to make these slow tempos swing. He usually does this by trying to play as many notes as humanly possible in the framework of each piece (remember his famous live STARDUST recording for Decca in 1947?). One track on GOLDEN is taken up tempo (VIBRAHOLIDAY, a blues), and a few on each are at medium tempo, and they are nice and swinging. ROUND MIDNIGHT gets one of the better treatments I know with Hamp drenching it in the blues. BLUE MOON has a clever arrangement with an interesting woodblock effect, and Hamp switches to marimba and chimes before it's over. Usually the slow tempos, especially on SILVER, go double time for at least half a chorus, which adds to the variety somewhat. But it's Hamp front-and-center all the way; nobody else gets a taste. This is a very good ballad CD and features Hamp outside his typical flagwaving role and more on the mellow side - a side that still swings, though, nicely.

5 out of 5 stars All Hamp.......2004-11-10

I had this side in high school in 1960. Many a girl and I danced a million miles to "Walking My Baby Back Home". I credit Hamp with my having a lot of dates in HS--they knew they would get to hear Lionel Hampton before the night was over. My parents had danced live to Hamp and all the 30's bands so I grew up with Swing on one side of the house and R&R for my sister and I on the other.

5 out of 5 stars At Last! Fantastic Vibrophones!.......2003-12-28

I first purchased these two albums in LP form when they came out in the late 50s, the purchase was through my then-new Columbia Record Club. I was a teenager, moovin' and groovin' with rock and roll, but I was also interested in other types of music. These were the first "jazz" albums I bought, though I had of course heard of Hampton. I couldn't believe these albums would sound so good. I carried them with me through my Air Force years and eventually lost them through my many moves. I am thrilled to be able to find them again! If you enjoy nice, soft melodious jazz music, this is the one for you. Great for listening in front of the fireplace and other romantic settings. Highly recommended!

Not since Shakatak in the '80s has a band from London so effortlessly combined British acid jazz/funk with America's smooth-jazz sensibilities. Most of the tracks here have a mellowness about them that probably feels safe to those who don't need strong hip-hop rhythms and bold vocals. On the other hand, DTTB rely heavily on sharp, crisp arrangements, dynamic musicianship, and an adherence to a '70s sonic palette. Producer-arranger Stuart Wade is the artist with the brush on what is, if not the group's best album, certainly their most cohesive. Song titles are almost self-explanatory: "Searching for a Simple Groove," "Cooking with Gas," and "Electra Glide." --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-01-14

This is great music. Jazz influences, driving beats and melodies that compel you to listen often. My favorite track, "I Softly Surrender (To You)", is one of the most interesting, and beautiful compositions I have ever heard. This CD is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2003-12-13

I know funky jazz and how it should sound. DTTB has accomplished this feat. The bands driving melodies create a pleasing euphoria similar to what I felt when I heard earth, wind and fire for the first time. I believe DTTB is destined for similar fame. You just can't match that funky sound anywhere else. My advice is to buy all of their albums and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars inofensive music, but is that a good thing?.......2003-10-08

If you were to liken the smooth jazz genre to a food it would probably be something with lots of MSG in it. Like the flavor enhancer that can serve to make the most banal dishes taste wonderful, smooth jazz with all it's hip, poppy, groovy, sunny good time vibes often sounds much more pleasing to the ear at first listen but doesn't really stand up to closer scrutiny. DTTB is a group that attempts to combine said smooth jazz with the grittier sensibilities of urban funk with a british tinge (dare i say mid '90s acid jazz?). These are two musical styles that i have always enjoyed however here the combination is slightly less than inspiring. Sure, all the essential ingredients are there - relentlessly groovy tracks played by adept musicians, funky bass lines and drum tracks and solos that lend an air of jazz credibility to the project. However the end result seems to be a rather lifeless record. The grooves are groovy, but not really FUNKY. The compositions seem staid enough not to offend smooth jazz listeners but is that a good thing? I guess so if you only want an album to put on in the background to use as mood music (or should that be muzak?). But if you are looking for an album that has a smooth feel to it and a real sense of soul in the rhythm i don't think this album is for you. Don't get me wrong i like this sort of music and don't regret buying the cd. But I am afraid that in anyone's collection this is an album that is destined to fade into the obscurity of disuse.

4 out of 5 stars keep s your legs movin and finger s movin, its a grove thing.......2003-03-08

I have all the cds and they are great, this one is great also
I look foward to each one coming out and this one was worth the wait just like the first two. I do think they need to start puttin some singers on the tracks more tho, the music will be the same but that much better. this is good and worth buying and
so far they are 3 for 3 , cant wait to see the next or hear it .

5 out of 5 stars Groovin' funk/jazz/dance.......2003-02-17

Down to the Bone really puts the fun back into modern jazz. Their blend is more of a dance beat with funk and jazz improvisations. This is a kind of disc you'll want to throw into your surround sound system, and turn the volume and bass WAY up. There are no breather songs in this, as DTTB doesn't seem to believe in ballads. Absolutely amazing and fun standouts that you have to listen to are On a Roll, Music is my Drug and Searching for a Simple Groove.
Definitely worth buying if you love to dance to your music.

I am a longtime listener of Reggae music and I say without reservation or fear of contradiction that this is without a doubt one of the best Reggae albums ever made. The musicianship is first rate(no drum machines)and Mr. Hammonds excellent songwriting and unique vocal style really does justice to the material. Since I purchased the album I have listened to it every day, and continue to be amazed. I recommend this album highly. You will not be disappointed, buy one, and then buy another for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation of Soca's Greatest Hits !.......2000-06-11

This CD has the best of Soca on it. It is great for someone who wants a sampler of some of the hottest Soca music. If you could only buy 1 cd with Soca music, then this would be the better choice. I am VERY pleased with it.
