One of the Finest Recordings of Gibbon's Music.......2006-02-19

The music of Orlando Gibbons represents the English response to radical changes that stemmed largely from Italy in the age of the birth of opera and a move away from the contrapunctal complexities of previous centuries. Whereas the Italian tended to write gradiose and radical works such of those by Monteverdi, the English tended to write music that was stylistically old-fashioned by the standards of the times, unostentatious with its preference for the sounds of the viol consort that helped make it so intimately poetic and evocative. The madrigal The Silver Swan is one of the most famous examples of English music of its time.

We really should rejoice over the fact that Naxos has this superb recording in its catalog. The music making here is first rate in every possible way. Of course Tesser Bonner is a regular with none other than the Tallis Scholars, testifying to the fact that Naxos is above all a quality label. In particular I really do love the way Bonner uses period pronounciation of the texts whereas Emma Kirky sadly modernises the pronounciation in music of this period. Thus the word 'bird' is pronounced more like 'beard'. I feel this helps to evoke the sense of the recreation of a lost world. The instrumental pieces too are unfailingly fine with excellent ensemble work by Red Byrd.

A superb recording recommendable in every possible way.

Behold, thou hast made my day.......2004-01-26

to misquote slightly the first vocal number on this disc. This is a really superlative production in every respect except that the words are not provided for the vocal items (the words of the anonymous The Silver Swan are worth knowing!). Even the liner note, by John Bryan, is excellent, which proves what I had never doubted, namely that the thing can be done on a budget label.

There are nearly 70 minutes of music here, and the plan seems to have been to give as broad a representation as possible of the output of this notable composer. There are 23 items in total, featuring music for accompanied solo voice and 5-part ensemble, keyboard compositions played on three different types of instrument, and items for viol ensembles of 2,3,4,and 6 instruments. Thought and care has obviously gone into the sequencing of the pieces, and the recital ends powerfully with a 5-part anthem `Glorious and Powerful God' led off by a gent with a truly terrific bass voice. One notable inclusion is an In Nomine for 4 viols. An In Nomine is actually a musical form, and a specifically English one, consisting of a free fantasia on a canto fermo deriving originally from plainsong via a mass by John Taverner. Solo status is accorded to Timothy Roberts who performs the three keyboard numbers, and to Tessa Bonner the soprano soloist in the seven pieces of that nature. I had the opportunity to compare her in The Silver Swan with Rachel Elliott on another outstanding Gibbons disc, by a group calling themselves Concordia (director Mark Levy), and you may actually prefer, as I do, the way Concordia do it. The piece benefits from Concordia's slower tempo, and my personal preference is for Elliott's voice, although she does use a modicum of vibrato, so this preference will not be shared by everyone. Their disc goes under the title Go From My Window, which is not a song but a set of 10 variations on a `ditty' by that title. In this piece I have to give my vote to Concordia again, as they give it with colossal panache and virtuosity - I'm not surprised they elected to call the disc after it. In fact the two recitals have another 4 pieces in common, and in these I can find nothing to choose between the two groups, so fine do both seem to me.

Enthusiasts for music of this period, and anyone even curious about it, are also recommended a keyboard recital , by John Kitchen, of works by the Scottish composer Kinloch, music that surprised even me (Scottish myself) by its outstanding quality. Long may enterprises like these continue.

More than a bargain.......2002-12-18

This is a handsomely played and beautifully recorded disc. The Rose Consort of Viols aptly catches the inherent melancholy of Gibbons style while Tessa Bonner sings ethereally as usual. With singing of Bonner's purity, as in "Silver Swanne", who needs texts? This is more than a bargain; it is a wonderful introduction to the deeply touching music of Orlando Gibbons.

Okay but no texts.......1999-01-24

As the title says mainly viol consort and keyboard music, but the highlights are the two english anthems for 5 voices, and three solo pieces with Tessa Bonner - including the famous "The Silver Swan". So why no texts? Playing time 68'24".

Trillion Vocalist Thom Griffin Returns!.......2007-02-15

Ambition is the amazing comeback effort of Thom Griffin legendary vocalist of Trillion which produced unknown AOR gem during late 70s to early 80s. Thom Griffin is the vocalist of second (the last) Trillion album CLEAR APPROACH in 1980.

After working as a back vocalist for MECCA (2002) and Pride of Lions albums, he now has an opportunity to sing lead in this rock project.

On this album he concentrates on the vocal effort and never pens his own songs so not so much Trillion legacy can be seen. HOLD ON and ALONE I CRY sounds close to Lou Gramm led Foreigner while SHAPING FATE AND DESTINY sounds as if Lou Gramm gave a vocal on Tommy Denander's RADIOACTIVE project. HYPOCRITES can find a place in Pride of Lions albums. NO WASTED MOMENTS and TOGETHER both are highlight tracks that will please not only Trillion fans but the wide range of AOR fans.

Verdict: Decent effort. I would be a hundred times as much elated if he returned as a reunited Trillion vocalist though.
Rating: 81 out of 100
Recommended for: Wide range of AOR music fans particularly Trillion, Mecca and Pride of Lions and Lou Gramm fans.

Getting better with time.......2001-11-06

Being a fan of David Mallett for more than tewnty years and
being lucky enough to live in Maine and having had the pleasure
of seeing David perform live up close and personal, I feel
somewhat qualified to offer my opinion on his most recent work
and the artist himself. "Ambition" is filled with Davids trademark mastery of the language. Few writers can consistanly
produce the turn of phrase and cleverness of wording that so freely flows from this artist. Mallett relies on simple truth, feeling, and a poets heart to stir the listener. Desperation,
things lost, and things that might have been, in concert with,
hope, and a belief that better things are possible, have run through his work from the beginning. Mallett is on a real roll
with "Ambition" and his last studio CD "In the falling Dark"
and in the words of the man himself "the next one will be
even better" I do not doubt it.

David's most sophisticated collection to date.......2000-09-15

After having been available to the general public for almost a year, David Mallett's "Ambition" seems to have stood the test of time. Few albums have the staying power in any field, contemporary folk included. Not so with this release.

"Ambition" follows up David's live recording of "Parallel Lives", his first collection since returning to his native Maine after ten years of Nashville, Tennessee residency. The newest recording finds him back in the studio with understated production and some of the best songs Mallett has written. Although a little darker in tone than what most might expect from Mallett ("Whiskey Talkin'", "Walkin'" and the title song), old fans will take to the more upbeat material that caused them to be attracted to him in the first place. The remembrances of growing up forty years ago ("Wild In The Sixties"), the changing attitudes of a teenager growing into young adulthood ("Sportin' Days"), and the wisdom and experience that only time brings ("Turn It Over To Love") are also showcased.

This is a good place to start if you're unfamiliar with Mallett's work. And if he comes anywhere close to where you live to perform, make plans to go see him. He's definitely worth the drive!

Classic David Mallett.......1999-11-24

At first listen I wasn't sure if this CD measured up to some of his earlier work. But upon subsequent listens, it's all great stuff. This artist is an undiscovered treasure. Buy his CD's and if he's in your area go see him perform! His songs will move you.

The best folk album of the year!.......1999-11-06

This CD is one of the best and most introspective albums to come out this year. Dave writing is touching, thoughtful and simplistic. The almost all-acoustic set is flawless. I only wish Nashville would take a listen and understand how intelligent writing can make for beautiful music. Thanks Dave.

Jason Weaver is great. I wish he would come back to music and do another, but I know he's also a great actor. I'm still looking for the remix of "Can't Stand The Pain" that I heard on the radio.

Talented young voclaist.......2006-11-12

Jason Weaver like Jamie Foxx is one of the few actor/singers who actually doesn't have to quit his day job. I first recall hearing Jason kill The Jackson Five's Who's Loving You in the group's miniseries. It took about a year to find the CD for a reasonable price and its well worth the money. Weaver is the best at on ballads and he handles The Isley Brother's classic For The Love Of Very exceptionally well. Weaver was supposed to release a second CD in 1996 but it was shelved and for a while there were talks of singing him to the Disturbing The Peace label after his success on Chingy's One Call Away. Truth be told I think Bobby Valentino's first disc was supposed to be his, but who knows. All in all this is a great CD and well worth your money.

Fall in love all over again..........2006-02-07

I was the biggest Jason Weaver fan as a young teen, and it's no accident he's still hovering around the industry. His voice is so smooth and melodic, soothing your soul with powerful ballads instead of forcing sex on you. The first time I saw Love Ambition's video, I sat open mouthed, wondering who the hell he was. I was so glad to see it, because it wasn't in rotation heavily. I immediatly went to cop the CD, and wasn't dissappointed in the least. Jason Weaver made my 8th and 9th grade years very special, and I hope he comes with more fire in the very near future. I haven't forgotten about him, and you won't either after you get this great piece of work.

My Favorite Singer.......2004-08-17

Who's my favorite male singer?? It ain't Usher. It ain't Marques. It ain't Ray J. It ain't Justin Tim or R. Kelly. It's Jason Weaver. You cannot mistake his voice for anybody else's. When I heard Chingy's "One Call Away" for the first time, I knew his voice right off the bat. I had to do a double take just to make sure I was right and I was. Anyway, Jason's own classic productions started here with this album -- Love Ambition. He did a phenomenal job doing a version of the Al Green classic "For The Love Of You" on this album and all of the rest of the tracks speak for themselves. What's not to like about his voice??

"So In Love" with this cd.......2004-08-13

This my second time purchasing this cd. The first time was in 1995, shortly after it's release. I remember being 15 and loving the smooth, relaxing, grown-up beats and lyrics over the one of the sweetest voices in the business at the time. Jason is still great, as was exhibited on Chingy's "One Call Away". This cd is the introduction of that voice. Filled with ballads and mellow cuts, this album signified Jason's arrival. Not typical of a lot of the teenie bopping candy coated artists of the time, these tracks suggest a young gentleman in the making. If you like JW a little bit, you'll love this cd...a lot.
