Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Somewhere inside Rainy Day Music beats the heart of a very fine folk-rock record. All chiming guitars and flawless falsetto, "Stumbling Through the Dark" captures the classic Jayhawks sound, and mid-tempo rockers "Tailspin" and "Eyes of SarahJane" recall older favorites like "I'd Run Away." "All the Right Reasons" floats on heavenly harmonies and "Save It for a Rainy Day" succeeds with nifty vocal interplay and a bright melodic hook. Yet, even with its share of jangle-pop gems, the disc also offers a few bland strummers that never quite take off. "One Man's Problem" boasts a catchy chorus but a dragging verse, and when chief songwriter Gary Louris hands the reins to drummer Tim O'Reagan or bassist Marc Perlman, the results suffer. The tasty pop treat "Angelyne" and an album-closing acoustic reprise of the opening track help redeem the disc's latter half, but in the end they only hint at how strong an album this might have been. --Anders Smith LindallCustomer Reviews:

Dark clouds overhead.......2007-03-02
Do it goes throughout "The Rainy Season." If you considered Marc's debut to be boyish, then this album is about the adult. "Baby King" describes the awe of being a father, when no matter what you do, the new center of attention is always going to beautifully upstage you. "Medicine Man" confronts a widowed physician who goes from house call to house call, looking for the lost love of his life in the healing of his patients. Same with "She's Becoming Gold," where the housewife is running "to the end of the drive to talk to her friends on the phone" when she discovers "the man of her dreams isn't all that he seems." This middle-aged melancholy of a woman on the verge is one of my favorites on this CD.
Marc also had a load of guests here, benefiting his rank of Best New Artist Grammy. Bonnie Raitt and members of Los Lobos are along for the ride, and they all compliment marc nicely. This was a sophisticated follow-up to his debut. But without the fire-starter of a "Walking In Memphis" (the bluesy "Walk Through The World" came close), it didn't get the commercial notice it should have. Nonetheless, "The Rainy Season" is a tour-de-force of singer-songwriter prowess and worth a spin in your library.
YET ANOTHER GOOD ALBUM FROM MARC COHN, BUT A LITTLE 'BELOW PAR' ?.......2006-10-03
There were no tracks that I disliked (I can always find something to enjoy with MC's music) - a few comments about my favourites (songwriters in brackets):
WALK THROUGH THE WORLD (Marc Cohn/John Leventhal) - Upbeat 'radio friendly' song; loved the piano solo towards the end - a bit like the piano in 'The Way It Is' by Bruce Hornsby and the Range.
THE RAINY SEASON (Marc Cohn) - A very evocative song with a 'sultry' feel to it; great production and instrumental arrangement. Features a rather brief appearance by Bonnie Raitt on vocals and slide guitar. Unusual rhythm - might be a 5/4 time signature (Dave Brubeck's 'Take Five' has this time signature).
PAPER WALLS (Marc Cohn) - Really 'gutsy' delivery of the chorus 'paper walls'. Some great lyrics, viz:- 'I heard her cryin' in her darkest hour, I heard the echo from the hotel shower ...'.
FROM THE STATION (Marc Cohn) - Slow tempo song with a poignant melody; one of two tracks featuring Graham Nash and David Crosby on harmony vocals (really nice but barely perceptible).
TWO OTHER TRACKS ARE ALSO WORTHY OF MENTION - 'REST FOR THE WEARY' and 'THE THINGS WE'VE HANDED DOWN'; the overall sound is reminiscent of many of the tracks on the 'Marc Cohn' album but lacking some of the emotional depth.
I was going to give a rating of 3 stars, but I have been influenced by other reviewers (perhaps I've been missing something). If you are a fan, buy this album - there is much to enjoy on it; if you are a casual listener, the recently released compilation album is strongly recommended.
Marc Cohn Focuses on the World thru the eyes of Las Vegas.......2005-10-15
Still good but a little bit of slumping here...........2005-10-02
HIGHLIGHTS:
The title tune is a wish from Cohn to his wife that she'd be there as he does the touring that's the demon of his profession. ("Let me just get these stars out of my eyes/'Cause I just wanna look back over all the years/With you right there standing by my side..") "Rest for the Weary" is part Biblical allusion, part paean to his hard-working dad ("Took a holiday for Christmas/Then he fell asleep beside the tree") and part fear that he's travelling the same road ("Sometimes I can't catch my breath/Sometimes I see my father's footsteps and man, it scares me half to death..") "Mama's in the Moon" finds Cohn mourning his mother. ("I'm rising like the ocean/And I'm crazy as a loon/And I don't know what I'm doing since mama's in the moon...") "Paper Walls" is a nifty number that finds Cohn alone on the road cursing his fate as the couple next door "do that thing that we used to do". The slinky mid-tempo tune ends with a twist as he invites himself to join her after her lover splits following an argument. Imitation gospel number "Baby King" is the opposite end of the spectrum, comparing a newborn's arrival to Jesus' with a backing that recalls the Blind Boys of Alabama. "Medicine Man" is a character sketch of a doctor who's hurting from the loss of his own wife even as he heals others. The most poignant song comes last in "Things We've Handed Down", a song that is sentimental but never saccharine, as Cohn imagines his coming baby ("Will you be a mama's boy/or daddy's little girl?") as not only his future but his link to a dim past ("From places no one one here remembers/Come the things we've handed down")
LOWS:
"From the Station" isn't saved by the appearance of Nash and Crosby. It simply isn't much of a song. "Don't Talk to Her at Night" also leaves me cold.
BOTTOM LINE:
Still a worthy recording that gets a fair amount of play in our house. Not the Cohn I'd dip my toe into at first, but if you've already gotten your feet wet with him you'll probably like RAINY.
3 1/2 stars
4.5 stars - maybe higher.......2005-06-29
Most of the songs here are every bit as strong as those from the debut - particularly the title track, 'Medicine Man' and 'From The Station', but also two of the most deeply personal tracks ever recorded - 'Rest for the Weary' and 'The Things We've Handed Down'. Much of the rest is comparatively lightweight, but still very good.
Many people will probably dislike 'Baby King' with it's gospel feel and annoyingly repetitive chorus, but it is the only track here that feels out of place, or, indeed, unwanted.
In conclusion then, if you loved Marc Cohn's debut (and why wouldn't you?) you'll like 'The Rainy Season' an awful lot.

It's easy to take Robert Cray for granted, for the singer-guitarist has altered his approach so little since he first burst on the scene. Nonetheless, the changes from his early albums to Some Rainy Morning are no less real for having been subtle. Cray is still combining urban-blues guitar and Southern-soul vocals on stories of romantic treachery and working-class frustration, but he has distilled that strategy until nothing superfluous remains. "Some Rainy Morning," recorded with his stripped-down road quartet, is full of breathing room so Cray's singing and playing are set off more dramatically than ever. In addition to the eight originals by Cray and his bandmates, the album includes remakes of Wilson Pickett's "Jealous Love" and Syl Johnson's "Steppin' Out," and Cray does a great job of matching Pickett's raucous shouts and Johnson's silky crooning. On his own songs, Cray sounds better than ever when he's holding out notes for effect or communicating paradoxical emotions. When he proclaims, "I'll Go On" loving his ungrateful woman, you can hear the extreme effort such loyalty requires. And when he insists that his ex-lover "Never Mattered Much" to him, you can hear just how much her absence continues to tear at him. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

The jazz/swing tunes are wonderful. Uses of stopped horn to simulate muted trumpets are quite effective. I also like the use of percussions throughout the disc. I think Caravan is my favorite track.
I just received the Take 9 CD today, and I didn't have the WOW feeling as I didn't when I first heard the London Horn Sound. There are many more tracks on the London CD that I will continue to listen to. The arrangements, I feel, better handle variations of texture and timbre of the homogeneous sound of a horn section. To get a sense of just how authentic a listening experience you're in for when spinning Jasmine Flower, flip through the liner notes first. Four pages in you'll find nothing but characters, and the second half is so pocked with bungled possessives and punctuation you wonder whether it was penned by the menu writer at your favorite hole-in-the-wall kung pao place. Sung in dialects from a jigsaw of Chinese regions, Flower dazzles with nectar-sweet harmonies, exotic instrumentation, and a spirit of innocence that transcends cultures and languages. China-specific sounds like the moon guitar and long lute slant the vibe in a spiritual direction, but each sentiment unfolds easily to willing Western ears. "The Anthem of Parents," from the Hunan Province, harnesses a distinct vocal reverie in describing the love that parents feel for their children; the Tibetan "My Beautiful Homeland--Xigaze" speaks, through gentle woodwinds and an exacting, chanted refrain, of a heavenly paradise with fragrant wine and flowers; and the Cantonese "A Rainy Day," drizzled in the sounds of nature and a mood of solemnity, illustrates the universal bummer of being at Mother Nature's mercy. Though the Beijing Angelic is strictly a kids' choir, Jasmine Flower exudes a Zen-style agelessness that anybody who's patted a Buddha's belly will warm to, tranquility-seeking New Age types especially. Educational applications are an option should Asian studies be in bloom at your household, but so is sitting back to simply to listen to the choir's gentle artistry. As the title track suggests, the jasmine's fragrance permeates everywhere, and everybody loves its white, lovely flowers. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

The best album of 2003... hand's down........2007-01-06
The only dispute I have with the glowing reviews of this album are with the couple that alluded to simplistic lyrics... while Louis certainly never displays the lyrical pyrotechnics of Dylan or early Springsteen, say, his lyrics consistently demostrate a powerful allusive quality that hint at deeper meanings, as in this passage from "Stumbling..."
Everybody's stumbling through the dark.
The men that preceded us here
Left only questions and fear
The vanity formed by beauty lies -
You know it's a crime.
I am grateful to have caught the 'hawks LIVE (opening band was The Thorns, who joined them for an encore of "Blue"!), and I hope that Gary and boys will one day see fit to come out and play some of these songs and the others in their terrific body of work.
An Instant Classic . . ........2007-01-01
Wow. Where was I when this came out?.......2006-11-17
The first half is definitely stronger but there is no filler. Even some of the tracks that lag on verses in the second half of the disc are redeemed by the layered instrumentation, great harmonies and catchy choruses (Ethan John's fine production is felt throughout).
This could have been a late 60s Byrds album, and a fine one at that (the verses to "Tailspin" are indeed reminiscent to "My Back Pages") Gary Louris has written a fine batch of song. Just when you think the cd won't close strong, "Tampa to Tulsa" near the end is brings the songwriting quality back to the level where it started.
Gary Louris has been working with original Jayhawk Mark Olsen recently, so hopefully this is not the last we've heard from this band.
One of their best.......2006-09-15
The most accurately titled cd ever.......2004-01-22
Having no prior background of The Jayhawks, my review is not a comparison of their previous work, it focuses strictly on this cd. This is a beautiful piece of work. The style is hard to pigeonhole, but I would describe it as a combination of countrified-folk-rock. The songs are lyrically simple/basic, but the instrumentation has such a variety of sonic layers and the melodies are so classic that when combined, they become a feast for your soul. This really is rainy day music. The first time I listened to it was at work and I noted to myself "This would be great rainy day music" and then I realized that was the title! It is also great driving music, particularly when it is late at night and you are driving a minivan full of sleeping kids who are exhausted after a big day at Disneyland. This cd has provided a soundtrack for my contented moments, as well as my sullen moments. It's pleasant and unobtrusive. While I enjoy the cd as a whole, my favorite songs are "Stumbling Through The Dark", "Tailspin", "All the Right Reasons" and "Save it For a Rainy Day". Get the Limited Edition w/Bonus CD if you can!
I suspect Ethan Johns' contributions, as "Produced, Engineered, and Mixed by" and instrumentally, are a big factor in the ultimate sound of this cd, so I am now going to skip along that tangent and find other Ethan Johns' productions, as well as devour other The Jayhawks works. All because I was willing to take a gamble with Amazon's recommendations. This cd will be a favorite in my collection for a very long time.

Is this really contemporary classical music?.......2007-02-18
What could Liebermann do with all his immense technical powers?
I would have been shocked in 1907, but in 2007 I think I was stroked too much.
Great music, well performed.......2005-10-27
I would describe these pieces of music as brisk - interesting and pleasant on first listening, without being sweet.
They remind me of music by other neoclassicists, such as Stravinsky and Poulenc.
About this performance: Stephen Hough plays very gently. I like it (and I'm sure the composer does too), but it would be interesting to listen to an alternative, more aggressive playing in some parts.
As this is my first (and only, so far) encounter with any of Liebermann's compositions, I cannot give any comparative comments.
Regarding this CD: the sound is clean and rich.
To conclude - unless you really dislike neoclassicism - buy this CD!
A star ascending.......2002-06-09
It's hard to remember that at one time, people actually looked forward to hearing the latest works by the composers of the day. For the past 50 years or so, the public has usually gone to the concert hall with dread when new music was on the program -- or they didn't go at all. Liebermann, on the other hand, is the type of composer you want to hear again and again.
That doesn't mean his music is easy or obvious -- just that he cares what it sounds like and doesn't view composition as a mathematical equation to be solved.
The first concerto, a relatively early work, has more of the thorniness that was de rigeuer in music schools. But the finale is a wild, frenzied dance macabre, quite memorable.
The second is written on the grand scale, with cascading piano passages, lush orchestration, etc. You'll hear passages that make you think of Rachmaninoff or Prokofiev or Shostakovich or others, but it's none of these. It seems that Liebermann has assimilated the best the 20th century had to offer and has gone on from there. One day, "Liebermann 2" will be a landmark.
Buying new, unfamiliar music can be frustrating. But I assure you, this is a silk purse, not a sow's ear.
Threading various styles together - successfully.......2002-03-06
Liebermann has composed a brilliant work - combining romantic sweeps, toccata passages, and moments of near silence - it seems that rachmaninov, prokofiev, ravel, and schoenberg sat together to write this work. And by no means it lacks in originality, his greatest merit has been the ability to put this conglomerate together in such a way that it works and also is unrecognizable as any well performed music. The 2nd concerto is gaining acceptance in the standard repertoire and so is Liebermann's music - deservedly so.
The first concerto and the accompanying solo works are also fine works in their own, but pale in comparison to the 2nd concerto. The first concerto works also, but for my personal taste i could not find much to hold on to. But those who favor Bartok or Ravel's concerto for the left hand will love this work.
In regards to the pianist, Liebermann could not find a better match than Stephen Hough for this work. The writing, obviously virtuosic, is handled brilliantly by Hough and the dark introspective passages are played with attention to detail and reserve. And the live performance i attended was even better!
The recorded sound captures the bbc scottish symphony orchestra in top form.
It is so heartwarming to hear new music performed with so much care and attention - i surely hope Liebermann continues to get the success works as these should entitle him to.

Album Description
One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.Customer Reviews:
