Album Description

A musical partnership between Disney and the Make-A-Wish Foundation launched with the first official wish, which included a trip to Disneyland for 7-year-old Bobsy. This year we will celebrate the 50,000th Disney theme park visit for a Make-A-Wish child. In celebration of this landmark wish, Disney and Make-A-Wish have joined forces to create a compilation record themed around music of hope, friendship and dreams coming true. Each song is a timeless classic, which will instantly evoke the message of love and hope. Wishes! showcases leading artists, from Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Tony Bennett and many more, singing specially-selected Disney songs about the power of making wishes come true. Great artists, great songs and a great cause, brought together on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Music.......2007-04-12

This is a wonderful Cd of music with talented singers. It is going to a wonderful organization for children fighting disease. A "must get" for any music lover of childrens movie titled songs.

5 out of 5 stars well done.......2007-01-10

This is one of the better Disney albums....The Tony Bennett "Bare Necessities" and the Streisand "Someday My Prince Will Come" make it worth it, but the Kenny Loggins "Your Heart Will Lead You Home" is wonderful too.

1 out of 5 stars SUPER!!!.......2006-07-06

Wishes was not only what I was looking for but even better, Great for a disney song collectot.

2 out of 5 stars The Rescuers remains neglected!.......2006-01-20

One of the most fit songs to appear in this CD comes from Disney's 1977 feature, The Rescuers, and that was Someone's Waiting for You, which's original recording was beautifully performed by Shelby Flint, but why isn't in here? Once again, I wonder why the film's been neglected from appearing in any music CD ever.

2 out of 5 stars I didn't like the new renditions.......2005-12-20

Others may prefer that this isn't just a 'greatest hits' album from Disney and has new folks singing the old songs, but to my ear they just didn't have the charm of the originals and not what I want to listen to.

2 out of 5 stars Make a Wish Review.......2007-01-13

Not a particularly exciting score. Primarily of value if one has a collection of Broadway shows. Perhaps in the context of a full stage performance it would have more appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Blow Out the Candles.......2007-01-07

Before I go any further I must confess that any CD that features Nanette Fabray, Harold Lang, Helen Gallagher and Stephen Douglas would rank high among others. In the case of "Make a Wish", Sepia records has again remastered vintage recordings to great effect giving this charming score by Hugh Martin a much needed face-lift. It's also interesting to compare some of the songs from here with songs from Martin's earlier success, "Look Ma, I'm Dancin'!" "Let's Do a Ballet" was cut from that show (but included on Decca's CD) and new lyrics were writen for it to create Fabray's opening number in "Make a Wish". Likewise, Martin also "cannibalized" the tune of "Horrible, Horrible Love" from the former show and turned it into "Who Gives a Sou?" which is sung by the four leads of the musical. However, whether recycled or totally new for the occasion, all of the songs are very engaging and well sung with the only fault being the lack of a French accent in Gallagher's performances. I'm sure that her dances with Harold Lang more than made up for this minor issue. Along with the cast recording we are also treated to "bonus" songs, the best being those by Stephen Douglas singing tunes by Rodgers and Hart, Kern and Hammerstein, and other Kern treats. There are plenty of photos as well as informative liner notes with this CD package. Chalk this up as another musical from the fifties that should be included in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars HUGH MARTIN'S UNDER-APPRECIATED MUSICAL SCORE. . . . . . . .......2006-05-14

Perhaps you remember Nanette Fabray as Sid Ceaser's comic foil on TV or from the MGM movie "The Band Wagon." Perhaps you were fortunate, as I was, to catch the 1956 TV version of HIGH BUTTON SHOES and her wonderful version of "Papa, Won't You Dance with Me?" Maybe you're lucky enough to own the sadly deleted MR. PRESIDENT, Irving Berlin's last Broadway musical. (1 used copy available for $147.50 from Amazon Marketplace.)

I purchased MAKE A WISH for all of the above reasons, and also because I'm an Original Cast junkie. (My copy of MR. PRESIDENT is on vinyl.)

The score for MAKE A WISH is easy to dismiss if you give it only a cursory listen. But it grows on you. Steven Suskin explains all on playbill.com (June 27, 2004): "Hugh Martin's score is a delight. Not an unforgettable landmark like that winter's GUYS AND DOLLS. Something less distinguished, admittedly, but nevertheless loaded with the sort of fun that seems to have disappeared from the Broadway musical."

He continues, "What makes the MAKE A WISH cast album so entrancing, though, is the way songwriter Martin is supported by vocal arranger Martin . . . They don't write vocal arrangements like this anymore, for several reasons." Going on to list the reasons, he also tells you everything you possibly would want to know about MAKE A WISH, including why it was a dismal failure (102 performances). Fascinating reading. As highly recommended as the album itself.

Bonus tracks include 14 standards recorded by Fabray's co-star Stephen Douglass, one of Broadway's most-underused and under-appreciated voices. Often a replacement for John Raitt, his longest Broadway run was as the aging Joe Hardy in DAMN YANKEES, followed by 330 performance as File, the sheriff, in 110 IN THE SHADE. THE GOLDEN APPLE lasted for only 125 performances, and RUMPLE for 45. Voices like his just aren't heard on Broadway anymore. Pity.

Hats off to Sepia for this important release. Before listening to it for the first time, read Mr. Sorkin's essay and you'll discover the gem that is MAKE A WISH.

4 out of 5 stars Nanette Fabray sings delightful vintage Hugh Martin score.......2005-01-12

MAKE A WISH is a delightful musical from the pen of Hugh Martin (MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, LOOK MA I'M DANCIN'!) which is receiving it's long-awaited CD debut thanks to British boutique label Sepia.

MAKE A WISH tells the story of a young French orphan (played by Nanette Fabray) who escapes her dull lot to become a member of a nightclub kick-line. It's based on Ferenc Molnar's THE GOOD FAIRY. Despite it's strong cast and score it shuttered after 102 performances.

Harold Lang and Helen Gallagher play the secondary romantic couple with capable Stephen Douglass as Fabray's love interest. Lang and Gallagher would go on to co-star again in the 1952 revival of PAL JOEY, before Gallagher's Tony-winning turn in the title role of 1953's HAZEL FLAGG.

Nanette Fabray sings the delightful "I Wanna Be Good 'n' Bad", "Over and Over" and "What I Was Warned About". There are also great numbers like "Who Gives a Sou?" and "Suits Me Fine"; though the score only yielded one popular hit ("When Does This Feeling Go Away?").

The disc is rounded out by Fran Warren's cover version of "Feeling"; with the complete set of the Stephen Douglass album 'Serenade For You' thrown in for good measure!

This disc is simply magical, and is highly-recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Just Listen to It!.......2004-03-11

As a longtime fan of Incubus and also a classical music wonk, I had to buy this CD. I read the reviews of this album after I listened to it all the way through about twice and fell in love, but the reviews disappointed me. Obviously, people have a problem with changing what are already good songs. Also, it seems like most of the reviewers aren't listening hard enough, as all of the best songs are very easily recognizable. The only misses on this CD, the Morning View songs, frankly weren't that great to begin with. The Warmth is the best track here, becuase the slightly ominous tune was captured perfectly by strings. Make Yourself and Drive are also very good. With the exception of the Morning View songs, the composer chose the songs to reproduce with a great amount of consideration, because only the melodic Make Yourself tunes translate into classical. No one would have enjoyed a string version of Certain Shade of Green or Hilikus. All in all, a great buy, but if you don't like classical or if you only began listening to Incubus with the Morning View Sessions, then don't bother, because you just won't appreciate it.

3 out of 5 stars Expected more!.......2004-01-04

As a big Incubus fan and a violinist, I thought this CD had the potential to be fabulous. I will say that you can recognize most of the songs, and it is a peaceful, tranquil way to listen to Incubus. However, often the strings sound similar to tuning instruments in an Elementary School orchestra (boy does that take me back!). Perhaps they could have selected more experienced artists, because the Incubus songs are so beautiful.

1 out of 5 stars soo bad.......2003-11-25

this is the worst version of any incubus song, even my cat could wail an incubus song better than this. even if i ever did recognize any not of this as being an incubus song, its still crap. Most of this CD is an unrecognizable slice of junk. Buy a proper INCUBUS cd!

5 out of 5 stars HOLY ka-NOLY! hot DANCER SPA-coal-EE!!!.......2003-09-27

very well done. musically creative. if you truely apriciate incubus, and you also appriciate the classical music. this album was put together very well. its a good album to relax to while driving and you just want to be calm.or sleeping to or whatever.
you can TOTALLY tell what songs are what. and after listening to this album, you will have a new look on incubus and there creativity. but seriously...i know music. and this is good and well thought out music. ---chuck says "enjoy incubus!"

I just got this cd today. I've already listened to it 3 times. All I can say is it's amazing.. I'm a huge fan of Incubus and when I first heard this I was in shock on how amazing this quartet could play.Just get it.. you won't be let down

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Sharp shines.......2007-01-09

Kevin Sharp is one of the most underrated singers on the market today. His vocals are saturated with emotion, and he sings each song like it's his first.
He never dissapoints his audience, and better yet, his fans will never dissapoint him. He gives new meaning to the word "humanitarian".

5 out of 5 stars glad he's back.......2005-09-07

so glad to hear from kevin sharp again. i have missed his music. what a voice and a story. have his two previous albums and this is certainly a welcome addition to my collection. music is vintage kevin and it is the same as before, easy to listen to. kudos to the producers!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Sharp Makes A Desirable Wish.......2005-08-27

Prime Cuts: Nobody Knows, You Are the Reason Why, Make A Wish

Kevin Sharp is not, in the words of Delbert McClinton, a "victim of circumstances." After an excoriating bout with cancer and after the folding of his record label Asylum, this resilient Idaho native is finally back with a brand new album in 7 years. Though released independently under producer Jerry Cupit's imprint, Cupit Records, the production is tow to toe with any major label product out there. And despite the bums and dumps, Sharp has never sounded more rejuvenated as he careens this CD with his smooth tenor timbered with his signature pop-country approach a la Collin Raye, Neal McCoy and Doug Stone. Taking a greater command over the choice of material, "Make a Wish" boasts 5 Sharp co-compositions and they are inherent with a profound sense of compassion and insights only a man who has come face to face with death (as Sharp had) could transcribed.

Like his previous two CDs, the ballads here are the cynosure. Flavored by some appeasing sounding piano which accents the romantic ambience, the "You Are the Reason Why" finds Sharp waxes eloquent over a gal whose affection knows no bounds. Couched with soft percussions and gentle guitar strums building up to full blown power ballad chorus, "Let Me Rock You to Sleep" finds a romantic Sharp offering his assurance of love to his paramour. The title cut, named after the organization of the same name that offers assistance to children with life threatening diseases, is another ballad with a message of hope for those in the midst of tribulations. And with portentous ordeal Sharp had been through, his life-transforming convictions radiates vivaciously right through this paean. Sharp's greatest hit "Nobody Knows" gets a reprise here and even after all these years, this ballad of unspeakable heart break still strikes a cord because its lyrical vulnerable is indeed a rip off reality.

All of this does not Sharp has gone all soft and mawkish: there are a few uptempoes to boot. Though the testosterone-charged ode to the blue collar "I Am a Working Man" may not charter any new ground, but it showcases Sharp's bluesier and grittier side. Current single "I Think I'll Stay" is a radio-pleasing pop number that pushes all the right buttons without being earth shattering. And that's the problem with the rest of the tracks, they are not disagreeable, but they are just a little pedestrian. Part of the reason resides in the fact that most songs come too in-house (coming from Sharp, Cupit and their cohorts). Perhaps a visit to some of Music Row's tunesmiths such as Dean Dillon, Paul Overstreet, Jeffrey Steele, Bill Anderson and even Nashville's hottest scribe John Rich might help.

Overall, "Make a Wish" is a thoughtful collection of tunes delivered by a man who knows how to transcribe his own experiences into vocal nuances in these songs. A welcoming return indeed, but if Sharp were to re-establish his place in country music's map, perhaps he ought to find a couple of earth shaking songs in the veins of "Nobody Knows."

3 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Highly polished third album.......2005-08-21

Sharp broke on the country charts with his 1996 debut "Measure of a Man," driving towards the middle-of-the-road with power ballads and dance-inflected numbers. His follow-up, 1998's "Love Is," moved ever so slightly away from the debut's slick production, but basically stuck to the centerline. Six years and a couple of dropped record deals later, Sharp returns with his third LP for the indie Cupit label.

As with his first two releases, this is pop music with passing fiddle lines and twangy harmonies that could position it for today's country charts. As a cancer survivor, Sharp's spent much of the last six years working as an inspirational speaker, and those lessons aren't lost on his music. The album's title track and songs like "Listen to the Music" speak to living a good life, transcending one's problems, reaching for one's goals and always maintaining faith. It's not a bad formula in a time when worldwide hope is stretched thin. Unusually, Sharp covers his own cover (of the Tony Rich Project) of "Nobody Knows" as a bonus track. Even more unusually, the album contains the instrumental backing tracks as bonuses. [Review by redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
If you're a fan of broadway showtunes, I believe you'll enjoy this album.

this was a terrific jazz album. danny is a great saxophonist and all the songs are arranged beautifully. i was touched by the tribute to his mother. i was disappointed at the length of the album (only 8 songs) but the quality of the band members makes up for the shortness of the album. Nathan East (Eric Clapton,Four Play) played bass on most of the tracks and there is a bunch of other guys like luis conte, and paul jackson jr, just to name a few. amazing album and a definate must for any jazz lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great soft Jazz album.......2000-06-21

A fitting epigraph to this all-over-the-madcap-map compilation might be, "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by folk music." Ringleaders Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber knew their ethnomusicology but preferred deconstructing and discombobulating the old-time tunes their folknik peers handled with cowering reverence. Swiping tracks from the Rounders mid-'70s psychedelic string-band romps, and off-and-on Rounder Michael Hurley's solo records, this set gets to the heart of the group's Frank Zappa-meets-Uncle Dave Macon aesthetic, and rarely grows tedious, because, amazingly, these zany guys can play. Hurley's exquisitely melodic "Sweet Lucy" is included, as are the evil string-band genius of "Random Canyon," the hilarious barrelhouse stomp of "Synergy," and the stoned-as-bats country of "Robbin' Banks." Folk music never sounded so fun. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Music that makes all other seem pretentious.......2006-02-25

Disclaimer; I love the HMRounder Family in all forms (HMR, Michael Hurley, Jeffrey Frederick and Clamtones), but for many years I was content to listen and laugh to the 1976 classic HAVE MOICY! Then I awakened and began exploring all the rest. I have to say my favorites are I MAKE A WISH FOR A POTATO and TOO MUCH FUN! Both are collections of older recordings and remakes and while they overlap and repeat some they are both essential for the tunes they don't share. And while the extended family makes occasional appearance, mostly we get Stampfel and Weber sharing their infectious madness.

These songs make me smile and laugh aloud - poignant, silly, rough and raw, this is music from the heart. I'd recommend the curious start with HAVE MOICY! But the wise shouldn't pass up these new releases.

4 out of 5 stars The Holy (Modal) Family...a Brief Explanation.......2002-04-12

East Coast fans of the HMR (& the gentlemen from Japan) may not realize that in the 20 year hiatus when Stampfel & Weber were not performing live, they were living on opposite coasts. And the Holy Modal Rounders (sans Stampfel)--Steve Weber, David Reich, Robin Remailly, Roger North, Richard Tyler and Teddy Deane were playing at least once per weekend every night of those 20 years in Portland Oregon. The band that is known as the Clamtones is the SAME aggregation, fronted by Jeffrey Fredrick and Jill Gross, without Weber. Reich and North are still in Portland, still performing, currently with the Freak Mountain Ramblers.

3 out of 5 stars Rounders fans take heed...........2001-09-18

This is by far NOT what any devoted Rounders fan would have wanted it to be. It's totally understandable, to me, that the psych-rock-freakout weirdness of THE MORAY EELS EAT... and INDIAN WAR WHOOP aren't represented here, since a) they're just not of a piece with the rest of the music here; b) both those albums have little for song separation, everything runs together, and are meant to be appreciated as a "piece;" and C) they weren't released on Rounder in the first place. I can't say much about the disinclusion of material from GOOD TASTE IS TIMELESS, since the album is rare enough that I've never even heard it. What irks me, though, is just *how little* of ALLEGED IN THEIR OWN TIME and that Stampfel/Weber solo thing, GOING NOWHERE FAST, are included. There's a few cuts, and admittedly they're some of the finest ("Nova," "Synergy," "Coldest Woman," etc,); but there's also a lot of Clamtones, Michael Hurley, dimly-related Rounders spinoffs that just lack any of the magic and exuberance of real Rounders material. (The only exception is "Impossible Groove," a priceless track by Peter Stampfel and the Bottlecaps, off their rare first release.) Further, ALLEGED IN THEIR OWN TIME and GOING NOWHERE FAST, in addition to being under-represented here, are both ON ROUNDER-- and unreleased on CD! Rounder keeps blabbing about how their name was inspired by this band, while keeping two of their finer albums out of circulation (not to mention the rumoured second CD from the TOO MUCH FUN sessions). These less-interesting Hurley tracks and whatnot ARE currently available in the Rounder catalogue, though, so I guess it's more important to the label that they promote them... This could have been a great album, but it ends up focusing far too much on a) material that's in print or b) material that just doesn't have enough of Stampfel or Weber involved in it. I'd recommend it for obsessives only, or for people who have never heard the hilarious, brilliant "Nova" (which rhymes "time is on my side" with "slime is on my tide," if you can imagine it). Meanwhile, folks at Rounder, for the sake of the credibility of your name, re-release ALLEGED IN THEIR OWN TIME, please!

2 out of 5 stars There was only one cut that I liked.......2001-06-13

I am not a fan of Michael Hurley. He seems like the poor man's Jimmy Buffet with slick mediocre music and mostly second rate lyrics. He did write "The Tea Song," which is one of my favorites. Since he dominates this album I cannot recommend it to anyone. Weber, Stampfel, Remailly, and Resich are worthy of attention but I would recommend "1&2" and/or "Too Much Fun" instead of this disappointing collection. I wish that someone would reissue "The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders." Some of it might seem dated but I'm sure that it would play better than this stuff.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspired insanity.......2001-06-11

Maybe it's me, but I've always loved the Rounders music. Their first albums back in the 60s were such a refreshingly irreverent spin on "folk" music that it forced your ears and mind open, or at least it did mine. I followed them on through their encounter with the Moray Eels (exceptionally dark acid-folk rock)and on to the truly inspired "Have Moicy". Hearing this collection which features pieces not only by Mr. Stampfel and Mr. Weber, but by kindred spirits the Clamtones, Michael Hurley and others is a real joy to a twisted musician such as myself. Thanks again to Rounder Records Without you people, the world would be a much more dismal place.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

    5 out of 5 stars all Christmas,all the Time.......2007-01-10

This two cd offering has almost all my favorites.the classics, not the Rudolph ones. Can't recommend enough.Listen and read Dickens...That's enough Christmas for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Title makes a big claim, but it absolutely delivers..........2006-12-02

This album provides 2.5 hours of excellent carols, from excellent choirs and soloists, and with great sound. I was worried that a compilation this large, and with such an extravagent title, would be B-side offerings, but that's not the case at all.

This isn't an album if you are looking for something "fresh and new." The arrangements are traditional, and even newer carols are done in a fairly conservative style. But that said, some of the pieces provide the best orchestration and voice arrangement I have ever heard. This is like the pinnacle of the classic English Christmas carol; clean, precise, glorious and celebratory.

5 out of 5 stars Its time to be seasonal.......2005-12-16

This album contains traditional carols performed in a traditional way at the best quality. It is an excellent album to ensure the spirit of christmas is present and to bring the true meaning of christmas back. The double CD selection has all the golden favourites as well as not so wellknown carols to complete a very good christmas album. Merry Christmas to you all!
