I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!
Must have.......2005-11-02
I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

Amazon.com essential recording
The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
1997 EMI reissue of 1990 Capitol compilation featuring 30 ofthe greatest tracks by American guitar hero & his singing partner, including 'Brazil', 'Hip Billy Boogie', 'Jealous', and 'How High The Moon'.Album Details
Collection of songs by the then-husband & wife duo of guitar great Les Paul & country western singer Mary Ford. Features their biggest hits 'How High the Moon', 'Tiger Rag', 'Lover' & many, many others.Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-03-25
specifically for the tracks "Josephine" and "Little
Rock Getaway" which, among other titles, were in my
late dad's record collection. "Walkin' and Whistlin'
Blues" I had heard on an album about 20 years ago.
Talk about memories.
What's interesting about this collection, as other
reviewers have noted, is that it contains mostly
Les Paul instrumentals--not quite so much Mary Ford
(curiously, "Jealous" has been included, which was
not one of their hits, but was on the flip-side of
one of their better-known tracks--possibly "How High
The Moon", but I'm not sure). For those of you who
want more of Mary's vocals, I recommened that you bypass
this CD and get "The best of the Capitol masters--90th
birthday edition"(I have a previously-releaesd version
of this CD, which only contains the tracks from "Lover"
to "Hummingbird", plus some of the funniest liner notes
from Les himself that I've ever read! I don't know if
the liner notes were retained). I believe another reviewer
wrote about the sound quality. Personally, I believe
"Josephine" sounds EXACTLY as it did on my dad's 45.
Preserving artistic integrity is usually the goal when
reissuing analog-recorded music, and EMI/Capitol has
done a fabulous job here in my opinion. It's also noteworthy
that, with the exception of "The Kangaroo" and "Mandolino",
this CD contains all of Les's HIT instrumentals, plus other
good tunes, like his take on Duke Ellington's "Caravan", an
interesting version of "The Man On The Flying Trapeze", etc.
Many of his instrumentals were on flip-sides of the vocal
records with Mary. And how Les could play that guitar, not
to mention the overdubbing which STILL sounds state-of-the-
art to me! Thank you, Amazon.
One of My favorites.......2007-02-09
Brilliant guitar solos and amazing harmony vocals.
Thirty songs each unique to the Les Paul and Mary Ford style.
One of my favorite albums.
Really takes me back!.......2005-10-07
For those who admire jazz.......2005-04-01
If you admire the jazz side of Les Paul, then you would enjoy it very much. But I'm going to look for something more pop-orientated and with more vocal contribution from Mary, maybe more of their Columbia period (1957-1963).
NOT disapointing..........2004-03-14

Abandoned as a baby and raised in a brothel, Piaf was dicovered singing in the streets of Paris by a club owner, who started her 30-year career during which time she became France's best-loved and best-known songstress, with major hits from beginning to end. At times singing in front of the band with no microphone, her powerful voice and emotional delivery was a striking contrast to her diminutive size. Nicknamed "the Little Sparrow," Piaf was plagued by controversy, from implications in a clubowner's death to multiple affairs (including Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour), drugs, and alcohol. Her torchy cabaret and dramatically theatrical songs eventually won her global recognition. This two-CD set covers highlights of her career up to her death in 1963, many of which are now standards. Described in France as "the greatest figure in the history of song," her voice still rings with a passion for life, something that eventually consumed her. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:

Matthew Hit the Nail on the Head.......2006-10-02
"This two CD set is highly recommended for Piaf fans (as if they didn't know that already), fans of French classic vocals and fans of international music. Thank goodness Edith Piaf shared her talents with us while she lived amongst us--fans of the arts are infinitely better off because of Piaf's substantial contributions to the arts."
The Piaf legend will live forever and should. I, too, recommend the Carnegie two-cd set. It's enthralling from start to end.
Piaf, Garland and Minnelli...the world will never see women performers like these again.
Great reveiw, Matthew!
Piaf Tonight!.......2006-10-02
These wonderful French classics by Piaf include "La Vie En Rose;" "Les Trois Cloches;" "Hymne À L'amour;" "Jezebel;" "Padam Padam;" "Autumn Leaves" sung in English; "Milord;" "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien;" and "Les Amants De Paris." There are, of course, many more wonderful songs--all with beautiful musical arrangements--on this two CD set. There are even two unedited songs that show how Piaf worked on a song before it was polished: "Légende" and "Un Dimanche À Londres."
While almost all of the remastering is excellent, a few songs were not done to completion. For example, "Hymne À L'amour" on the first CD is obviously simply recorded from an old 78 rpm record complete with surface noise and scratches; and "L'homme De Berlin" sounds as if someone was holding tissues in front of the microphone in order to create a muffled reproduction of the recording. However, this is a minor disappointment because the rest of the package is so perfect.
The liner notes offer an excellent essay about Piaf's life written in both English and French. There are several photos of Edith Piaf and two of them are colorized for effect. The liner notes also provide songs credits and the year each song was recorded.
Piaf recorded much, much more than these two CDs could ever hope to cover simply because her career spanned so many years; if you like this set I strongly recommend other Piaf CD recordings including her performances at Carnegie Hall in 1956 and 1957. This two CD set is really best viewed as either a thorough introduction to Piaf or as a very good retrospective of her career including most of her greatest songs.
This two CD set is highly recommended for Piaf fans (as if they didn't know that already), fans of French classic vocals and fans of international music. Thank goodness Edith Piaf shared her talents with us while she lived amongst us--fans of the arts are infinitely better off because of Piaf's substantial contributions to the arts.
The sad and tragical nosthalgie !.......2004-09-04
Halliday , Edith Piaf , Maria Callas ; three different styles but a common cause the loneliness , the unability to be really loved besides her mythical sphere .
In the case of Piaf the pain was so close to her that I really think Piaf adopted as his partner and she faced that awful truth . After the Marcel Chardin death you feel this twist of fate and the sense of the emptiness in every one of her themes .
La foule , Hymn a l'amour or amants d 'un jour for instance are the best proof of this sadness who seems to fly far beyond the melody and become in a permament leit motive .
Edith Piaf will be always have a very special place in the soul of all those who love without being loved , who have loved , those who still love and specially for those who consider that they just can not love anymore.
not as good as i thought it would be.......2003-01-13
However, I think that several of the selected songs must be early versions which were then fine tuned by E. Piaf over the years. I have listened to other CDs and vinyl record where renditions such as Jezebel, and La Foule where much more forceful and on a higher emotional level.
A good choice for people who have not heard the later versions of the songs, or those prefer to hear the earlier versions,

The range of artists stepping up to pay tribute to the master electric guitarist as he turns ninety is staggering. From '50s and '60s guitar slingers like Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Steve Miller to stars of subsequent decades like Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Richie Sambora, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, they cross continents and generations. The songs celebrate the Les Paul guitar as well as the man. While he appears throughout, he's part of a generally raucous setting that leaves no volume knob unturned. The guests are often also the vocalists, but it's the guitars that carry the day. Purists may wag their fingers at the use of Sam Cooke's vocals in a contemporary recording, but Les Paul himself was never afraid of what new possibilities a tape recorder could unlock. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:

Except for one track, Caravan, Les Paul may as well be an indistinguishable background musician.
Shame because Caravan is brilliant. This 90 year old man has not lost his playing ability, and it would have been better off to play songs from his old trio or with Mary Ford, and having a guest vocalist, BUT NO EXTRA GUITAR PLAYERS, or have cd made similar to the recordings he made with Chet Atkins, where one can hear Paul.
The only pleasant surprise is hearing how well Neal Schon (of Journey) can play. Even Peter Frampton, a brillant player who sacrifices his guitar playing for his pop tune, is a dud on this session.
Perhaps any recordings made of Paul's current club dates will show up, as they will better represent him than this does.
Overall, the songs are good and the playing by others is very good, but it is not a Les Paul recording and, given other reviews, has deceived a number of people

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

Album Description
Les Paul turned 90 this June, and to celebrate this great event, Varese Sarabande is pleased to release a wonderful collection of early recordings by one of the most important names associated with the electric guitar!Les Paul and Mary Ford was one of the hottest selling duos in the early to mid 50s, charting over 40 hits during that period.
This collection showcases his abilities as a jazz guitarist, with a focus on the more sultry romantic side of Les Paul and His Trio, performing standards written by such notables as Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and George and Ira Gershwin, among others.
Three tracks also feature the great vocalist, Kay Starr, who herself had over two-dozen hits in the 1950s.
All selections were recorded in 1944-45, when Les was at the peak of his considerable guitar prowess. These excellent studio recordings made for transcription companies, were sent to radio stations throughout North America for airplay.
