Note to the Young Gunz: before you declare yourselves the future of the Roc you might want to release a debut album that actually supports such a wildly boastful claim. Tough Luv is not that album. Sure, Tough Luv offers up adequate hip-hop. Songs like the R&B-inflected "Grown Man" and "$$$ Girlz," with its retro-'80s, Hall & Oates sample and start-and-stop tempo changes, will easily satisfy young rap fans and the legions of Roc-A-Fella devotees. And there is, of course, a nice little Jay-Z cameo on "Never Take Me Alive." (Despite the next wave's best intentions, the Roc will never be the same without Jigga.) The Gunz may have a decent delivery, but the beats and lyrics leave something to be desired. We already know what the past looks like. If you truly are the future you've got to give us something new. --Rebecca Levine

3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2005-06-12

I was disappointed with the young duo from Roc-A-Fella. These guys (especially Young Chris) have impressed my lyrically on almost everything else I've heard them on. Not only was this album not impressive, it was almost, dare I say, bad. I hate to say it cause I love these cats, but this is not a good album. Hopefully they redeem themselves on the next one.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 star debut near classic album.......2005-04-09

Young Chris & Neef the late teens from State Property deliver a very solid 17 song debut album. Guests are on about half the songs and each artist has a solo (Young Chirs - my favorite of the 2 has a stronger solo and a few more verses on the album). It has 1 classic, 4 near classics, 4 ok songs, 1 I skip and the rest are good. Production is very god and mostly handled by Chad Hamilton (9 songs), Just Blaze did 2 songs, and Bink One, Scott Storch, Ruggedness, Boola, EZ elpee, and Darrel Branch all did 1 song. A must have rap album for all and for State Prop or Roc fans especially.

#1 - 9.5 (good beat)
#2 - 8.5 (f/ beanie sigel)
#3 - 9 (f/ Rell -- more relxing song for the ladies -- good beat though)
#4 - 7 (old school beat)
#5 - 8 (f/ Juelz Santana -- samples Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl")
#6 - 9.5 (f/ Jay-Z -- good beat)
#7 - 10 (CLASSIC!! --- great song that is very deep about the troubles the 2 went through together -- f/ denim --great beat as well)
#8 - 8.5
#9 - 9 (Chris solo)
#10 - 9.5 (a good song that actually features Cam'ron -- good beat)
#11 - 9.5 (f/ Sparks -- good beat)
#12 - 7.5 (Neef solo)
#13 - 7.5 (f/ Freeway)
#14 - 8 (deeper song)
#15 - 8 (f/ denim)
#16 - 7.5
#17 - 4.5 (horrible song -- f/ chingy -- I hated the original version so I have no clue why they remixed it and got sorry @S$ Chingy to do a verse????)

4.5 Stars

This debut album was impressive, I've always been a fan of the ROC and this album pretty much somes up what kind of new young talent they got signed. Young Chris is a great and Neef isn't on his level but he's good. Pick this album up and you'll see why their the "youngest in charge."

5 out of 5 stars Human Rights = HR from Bad Brains.......2006-09-22

Great reggae album. Jah Make A Rastaman is def the standout track on this album. Alot of HR's solo work is pretty bad - this album, along with Charge (under his name HR aka Paul Hudson) are the two best. This is not as polished sounding as Charge which makes it more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired reggae!!.......1999-05-06

Human Rights "I Luv" is one of the best reggae albums tat I've ever heard. Not only is it inspired, but songs like "Who's Got The Herb?," and "Shame In Dem Game" are more than exceptional! Every song is worth listening to, and the lyrics are all concious with praises to King Selassie frequent and sincere. As far as finding a copy, I don't know what to tell you. I was lucky enough to be given my copy by a friend who came upon it by chance. I've never heard of or seen another copy anywhere, but if you can find one it is well worth owning!!

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatesr reggae albums. Also my favorite.......1999-02-19

This is the only album I have been looking for, for atleast three years. I heard it quit releasing in 95'. Please get this for sale again.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2006-10-23

THE ALBUM IS GREAT AND THE SHOWS ARE EVEN BETTER. ROCK AND ROLL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND WHITESTARR IS LEADING THE WAY. THERE SHOWS ARE THE BEST THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. BUY THIS ALBUM YOU WON'T REGRET IT. IT ROCKS.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound and energy!.......2006-06-25

Yes, I'm a Wisconsin boy, but I've been living and working in Malibu this summer and I happened to check out their show Thursday night. They were headlining at the Malibu Inn and I was right there in front to absorb it all. Most notable was the guitar playing, a veritable flurry of strings and intricate yet smooth transitioning. Vocals were good when they could be heard, but as with most live shows, the supporting instruments prooved too overbearing. The whole show had a great vibe, though, and my friends in Malibu can attest to their talent from past shows. I'm getting the album, and I would recommend it to others as well; definitely to the locals here in LA.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for WHITESTARR!!!.......2006-06-14

This album ROCKS like nothing else has for years. These boys know how to party and to sing about it, I love this album!!!! Rock and roll is BACK!

4 out of 5 stars Better than good, but not good enough to be 'Great'.......2006-06-07

If you're looking for some unfiltered classic rock tunes, you really can't go wrong with Luv Machine. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the CD and there are no uncomfortably poor tracks. Unfortunately, there are also no songs that blow me away and my favorite Whitestarr tune, 'Wait For You' doesn't appear on this album. They might not bust on the scene like Pearl Jam or Guns N' Roses did, and they might not be in the same room as many great classic rock groups, but their certainly in the same building. They've been together for 6 years and sell out all their shows at small and medium venues and this is their first full-length CD, so I'm hoping there's more to come. The lead singer is dating Mischa Barton and his father directed 'Up in Smoke', so I think its worth a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Check out Whitestarr now!.......2006-05-17

Great band. Every EP they have released has just gotten better. Their full length LP is awesome. Check 'em out if you like dirty rock like the stones with a lil' boogie to it.

5 out of 5 stars The good stuff.......2007-06-21

An amazing collection of soul and funk music unparalleled in today's music. It's hard to find music this good, and here it is all packaged together for you. I listen to this album over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Good-Un'.......2006-01-27

Seems like (if you're looking in the right places) the marketplace is flooded with rare groove and underground funk compilations. It's hard to even know where to begin. You could do a whole hell of a lot worse than 'California Soul.' Distributed by Ubiquity, who guarantees all their albums - and always live up to the promise in my book - this one is wall to wall sound. Lots of variation too; from laid-back soul to mellow funk to righteous grooves and even a latin dip ("The Wobble Cha"). All culled from the best years of the 70's, the golden age of black music in America. If you dig soul and funk and you stumble on this one somewhere...pick it up and run.

5 out of 5 stars You're gonna love this!!!!!!.......2003-01-19

I love this CD man - it ROCKS. You are especially gonna love the Carnival (track 11) although of course Orquestra Esencia aren't on top form because when they play the Carnival they play the best of all. They play at wakes and wedding and at all the fancy balls, but they cancelled playing funerals to play the CARNIVAL. You're ALSO gonna love tracks 1 through 14 a.k.a the whole thing. TOP.

5 out of 5 stars Funky Driver on a Funky Bus.......2004-09-27

If you like Blaxpliotation era soundtracks and seventies funk that's the illegitimate stepbrothers of James Brown and Charles Wright's Watts 103rd Street Band, then this is for you. The flipside of silky Philly Soul, this is raw, funky, ghetto music that will remind you of inner-city Black America circa 1972 even if you've never left Iowa or were born far too late to catch it the first time around. Some tunes in particular are very crudely recorded even by the standards of the time, but this adds to the charm. Rappers and Dj's in particular will love this, as it is filled with Bomb beats to pump up the volume that they deservedly crave. Oh yeah, "Funky Driver on a Funky Bus" is as much fun as it's title indicates. Just don't cuss the driver like the character in the song. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A must have and very rare.......2004-06-08

In a time when you had some serious hard working and struggling bands with raw pure funk and soul it dont get better than this
classic stuff here , and to be a part of it as i watch my father contribute to it as a sax player with the new breed and the natrual four this is some classic funk at its best !!!

4 out of 5 stars Git Back...& Check 'Em Out!.......2004-02-22

As the liner notes put it, Johnny Otis protege Sugar Pie DeSanto ("Git Back") doesn't "take no stuff from no one!" Then there's 12-year-old Little Denise ("Check Me Out") who's "got her thing together." Just add a few horns, a touch of flute, some blues guitar, a whole lotta earth-shakin' bass, and that describes all the other funketeers on this fine compilation. "Bay Area Funk" proves that Sly and the Family Stone and Tower of Power were just the tip of the Bay Area's iceberg o' funk. Archival label Luv & Haight, which takes their name from a song by the Family Stone, has put together a tasty collection of rare sides from 1967-1976 that includes reminiscences from historians and DJs, lively bios, and lapel-popping pics. A must for the funk aficionado.

5 out of 5 stars Tightest funk out there.......2004-01-12

In the huge pile of CDs featuring early funk out there this is easily one of the best. It features artists from the Bay area of San Francisco recorded at the same time as psychedelia was flourishing in the inner city (late 60's/early 70's). Some of the tracks show that influence and are all the fresher for it. For me this stuff is much more accessible 30 odd years later than the acid rock of the same period. It's ironic that the funk of San Francisco was focused on short, tight tracks while the rock drifted into meaningless jams. Later in the 70's both would be making the move into excessive, more is less territory, but at the time these tracks were waxed it was obvious that the rhythm was treated as a short injection rather than a prolonged treatment. Having said that, the stand out track is actually the longest on the CD (What is it? by the Appollis), but every track is a winner. There is also a complilation of Texas funk out there which is a monster as well. Get em.

This cd was slept on by many people and got no airplay when it first came out. This was the 2nd cash money cd on universal records.I love this cd for the song big ballin is represents the whole cash money label and was one of the best songs they ever made!

3 out of 5 stars good album.......2004-02-13

The big tymers were decent in this album. This is the best two non rappers can do. Throughout the album is good songs and beats but their lyrics get so repetive. Cars hoes and money by halfway its gets bad but with the cash money gang making appearences on most of the songs it is good. All the songs are good but track ten is stupid, mannie fresh can't sing at all. U can't go wrong with the album unless you are looking for deep lyrics cause this ain't it

Gilles Peterson is of course one of very few dance, soul and funk-based musician/ DJs to have brought "world music" to a larger, dance-oriented audience without being cheesey about it. This is a pretty big deal, and has garnered Peterson comparisons to John Peel. His fan base is large, worldwide, and rabid. As you might guess by the title, the jazz, funk and soul tunes on this album were all compiled for the crate-digging Ubiquity label's Luv N' Haight series. These sixteen tunes are some of the rarest and heaviest Gilles was able to dig out of his Brownswood estate, a mini-mansion that holds nothing save Peterson's massive record collection. For funk fanatics and beat-seekers who don't have thousands of dollars laying around, this is pretty necessary. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

This is the first in a series of "Digs" compilations raiding the record racks of some of the most outrageous music collections. Over the years, Peterson has delighted dance floors and listeners of his radio show (his weekly BBC Radio 1 show is syndicated worldwide) by joining the dots between musical styles and eras. His record collection is so serious he keeps it in a separate house known as Brownswood and his regular listeners are occasionally treated to a Brownswood Basement selection (where all the records are oldies, all are on vinyl, and none have been re-issued). This comp features some of the Brownswood Basement rarities from the US. Peterson selects and blends choice tracks from around the world, from swinging vocal jazz selections to ultra rare funk nuggets to sweet soul to super rare manic breakbeat funk. He's the listeners' listener and the collectors' collector. Comp includes liner notes, artist images, and quotes from Gilles. For fans of "Under The! Influence" and "Back To Mine" comps, Jazzman, and world psychedelic classics.

4 out of 5 stars A review for other rabid Gilles Peterson fans..........2006-10-31

I am one of the rabid fans the Amazon reviewer describes. Hooked by the Double CD version of INCredible, I set out to buy almost everything he's put out... which is quite a lot these days. When something new comes out, I desparetly wait for a review with one finger on the buy now button. As I don't have unlimited funds to splash into buying music, I appreciate the reviews so that I can spend my money on the best music possible. This one became available at a discount price, so I decided to nabbed it.

This particular CD is of unmixed rarer older Jazz tracks, and as the other reviewer says, 'Some you'll love, some you'll like, and some are completely disposable' is I think by far the most appropriate description that could be given for this CD. The music is good for background music or would be suitable for a dinner party.

With many of his other releases, Gilles has set the bar very high for himself and, I might add, he rarely fails to deliver. While I consider this to be a good CD, and really there's nothing wrong with it, and any artist would be more than happy to put together a collection of tunes like this, however, there are still thousands of CDs out there like this (and many that are better, including from Gilles' own collection) so I doubt it will get a very high rotation from my collection. This disc is a solid 4 (definately not 5) rating. Personally, for something that's stylistically similar, I'd go for his Impressed Vol. 2 over this CD.

If you're new to Gilles Peterson and curious having heard good things about him - run, don't walk for the Double CD of INCredible, the Desert Island mix and his wonderful Brazilian (both) and African compilations. I have each of the Worldwide CDs which I very highly recommend as well (although, it's important to note that Vol. 4 is quite different to the first three). All of which will give you hours of listening pleasure... and begging for more!

If you're a rabid fan, you'll probably going to grab this anyway, and it wouldn't be a bad buy, it just doenst leave a lasting impression on me in the same way most of his other CDs do.

4 out of 5 stars welcome to Brownswood..........2005-11-20

... as in "digs" through record crates (for those in the over 30 set like myself). Legendary British DJ Gilles Peterson's compilations and mixes are almost always dependable sources of not only "rare" but interesting "groove" music from across the stylistic spectrum. For the most part, this CD is no exception with 16 tracks culled from a record collection so large that Mr. Peterson has a seperate house for it (known as "Brownswood" according to the liner notes... which is not located in the U.S.A... but the albums/artists presented here are apparently all American... thus the title...I guess.)

These tracks are not "mixed" in any way, just compiled... several fade out but I imagine that's because the source tracks do also. All are of 1960s-70s vintage and the sequencing is good, moving from soul/R&B-ish tunes through vocal-jazz-grooviness into psych-jazzy-pop toward disco-soul ending up with pseudo-african-mystical-jazz/pop with a bit of freak-funk-fusion along the way. Some common threads include a thing for piano-driven rhythms, jazz touches even on "pop" tracks, light orchestral instrumentation, flute solos, wordless vocals/chants/choruses, and (unfortunately) electric violin solos (on two back to back tracks... each of which I had to skip past at about the mid-point...)

Do any of these tracks qualify as "forgotten classics?" Not really. Some you'll love, some you'll like, and some are completely disposable. Will young club-goers enjoy this one? Probably not... Is this on the level of Peterson's INCredible or Desert Island Mix? Not even close -- this is more comparable to his Impressed series of rare UK jazz tracks. So... if you have an unquenchable thirst for (very) obscure vintage jazz/soul/funk/etc. tracks, be happy that Gilles shares his finds with us on CD compilations like this and enjoy the ride... short of spending a few months digging through the crates at Brownswood yourself, this is the next best thing.

(Extra credit points: there is interesting commentary for each track in the liner notes and many even include the album cover art. Nice work, Ubiquity!)

Album Description

Detroit was the epicenter for the soulful revolution the world knows as Motown. However, Detroit and the surrounding cities making up Michigan were also home to an unparalleled underground music scene that supported, propelled, and fed off the Motown machine. Included here are absolute rarities from The Black Aces Of Soul and The Eyes Of Ebony next to now funk classics by The Detroit Sex Machines. Raw breaks and beats from Jake Wade and The Soul Searchers sit next to the melancholic charm of vocalist Dee Edwards, while intergalactic big band funk from Wendell Harrison drops down next to the freaky synth-driven soul of Aged In Harmony. Almost all these records have never been heard on CD. This is volume one in a comprehensive series, and it features detailed liner notes illustrated with never before seen images from the era.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Soul Funk Compilation.......2005-11-16

Real good audio document of rare soul and funk from the state of Michigan. Lots of good stuff here from Wendell Harrison, Tommy McGee, and Jake and the Soul Searchers. Most tracks survey the underground soul scene that existed along side of Motown during this era. Also includes artists from Grand Rapids and the metro Detroit area. Great variety of sounds: some jazzy, some gospel like, a little light disco flavor. Many will leave you wondering why some of these tracks were the lone releases for the creator artist. A must have for all the Soul Funk Brothers from Michigan, and a good pickup for any collector seeking rare and unique material.
