This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa—-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19

It's nice to see more of this revolutionary era in Brazilian music released. However, anyone checking who was performing a main role in the movement, by looking at the Sargeant Pepper's-inspired cover of Tropicalia, the 1968 album, will notice that:

a) Tom Ze was there.

b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.

c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."

I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.

Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.

4 out of 5 stars pretty swell.......2006-06-27

if i were in charge of this project i'd change the following: more jorge ben, more gal costa, less mutantes, less tom ze (or better song choices), and maybe replace lost in paradise for a different caetano veloso song. notheless, this album is really excellent, and a great intro to tropicalia music.

5 out of 5 stars The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26

One of the best reveiewed ablums of 2006 (according to Metacritic.com), I was not disappointed.

I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.

I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....

5 out of 5 stars More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24

Wow! this is a must have.
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.

The American producer Creed Taylor produced some of the best recordings Antonio Carlos Jobim ever made. Taylor's lush strings, evocative woodwinds, and selection of top-notch jazz musicians were a perfect match for Jobim's spare, bossa nova-flavored compositions. This 1970 recording features Jobim backed by bassist Ron Carter, trombonist Urbie Green, flutist Hubert Law, and soprano saxophonist Joe Farrell. Several classics, such as "Children's Games," the lilting "Tereza My Love," and the two soft samba/swing renditions of Ary Barroso's "Brazil," are lovingly draped in the velvet arrangements of the then-young Brazilian sensation Eumir Deodato. Jobim's dry and achy vocals, along with his acoustic and rarely heard electric-piano playing, add the right sonic seasoning to this delightful disk. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2006-06-12

I'll add my praises of this disc to all the others. I fell totally in LOVE with Bossa Nova back in high school. I collected everything I could, from Best of Sergio Mendes - which is also very highly recommended to those who love this genre- to Joao Gilberto. In fact I made a trip to Brazil back in 1975 because I had to see this land where this sublime music came from. Anyway back to the disc. I had everything Jobim had recorded but this one intrigued me the most. It was his darkest and most complex. Worth adding to any collection of jazz, bossa, latin or anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Jobim.......2006-03-07

Listen to the samples and you will not need anyone's comments. "Wave", "Tide", "Stone flower" and the rest of the albums with Jobim's music will live for ever. Smooth, relaxing, stylish.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the most precious Jobim treasure.......2006-02-24

Another 5-star Jobim collaboration with producer Creed Taylor for his CTi label with arrangements by Deodato and a team of Jazz master musicians featuring Urbie Green and Hubert Laws.

Repertoire consists of Jobim material except for traditional Brazilian composer Ary Barroso's 'Brazil'.

Part of Jobim's compositions is music he composed for the film 'The Adventurers' also with arrangements by Deodato, issued in a very rare soundtrack album by Paramount label. Unfortunately, out of print.

Refer to the beautiful waltz 'Children's Games' which was also recorded by Elis Regina in her 'Elis & Tom' under the Portuguese title 'Chovendo na Roseira'.

A fundamental Jobim and Bossa Nova and Great Music album!

5 out of 5 stars Mere words just aren't enough..........2006-02-09

This is the greatest in bossa nova bar none and would be my pick of what music straight from Heaven sounds like. Antonio Carlos Jobim is the underrated genius of the genre and his recordings are beyond words for description. Both cuts of "Brazil" are priceless and the song "Sabia" is worth the price of this album alone. The new 2002 reissue has new liner nothes and a crystal-clear sound, giving them the greatest of sound quality for the full effect. Do yourself a favor and get this, it will send you to places you never thought possible.

4 out of 5 stars Stone Flower-Also Ran.......2006-02-01

While this is a very fine album, the tracks are not Jobim's best. These are prime examples of a great composer's lesser works, that produced by anyone else would be considered gems. The musicians on the album are all well known in their own right and the recording quality is excellent. A good album but not a great album

Luiz Bonfá, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell and Joao Gilberto, helped invent Brazilian Bossa Nova. "The whisper heard around the world" was budding during the 1950s but achieved full flower a decade later. It was a coolly intellectual yet irresistibly melodic marriage of African-derived samba rhythms with American jazz and French Existentialism. Bonfá eventually became world-famous due to his contributions to the score of Orfeo Negro, a much-honored film in which the tragic Greek legend was transmuted to Rio during Carnival time. The present tracks were produced by Emory Cook and this invaluable reissue not only revives a beautiful album but contains 15 previously unreleased tunes. The sonic environment is clear and spacious throughout, uncluttered by unnecessary studio adulterations. Bonfá was not a great singer but his wistful, straight-from-the-heart delivery makes mere technique seem showy and overdone. However, as a guitarist, he had no superiors and few peers. --Christina Roden

Album Description

One of the most creative guitar virtuosos of the 20th century, Luiz Bonfá is celebrated as one of the principal architects of the cool Brazilian sound of bossa nova - and as co-author, with Antônio Carlos Jobim, of the film score to "Black Orpheus." But Bonfá was far more than the composer of "Manhã de Carnaval." His technical mastery, intimacy, and dynamism suffuse every track of this first CD edition of his masterpiece, a long-unobtainable solo 1959 LP, along with a half-hour of previously unreleased material from the original studio session. 70 minutes, 31 tracks, 32 page booklet with extensive notes by Anthony Weller.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Chairman loves this!.......2007-06-12

I am in awe. His superb musicianship surpasses my other favorite, the Jobim Songbook.

5 out of 5 stars Solo in Rio 1959.......2007-05-12

Luiz Bonfa has to be one of best classical style guitar players I'll ever hear during my lifetime. Luiz Bonfa is not a singer. He can play a solo piece and you would swear he had an accompaniment, if you could not see him playing. If you have an ear for music, you'll appreciate his playing.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2007-04-07

This CD illustrates beautifully why Luiz Bonfa is considered one of the most important and influential Brazilian guitarists ever. No collection of Brazilian guitar music (or quality guitar music of any genre for that matter) is complete without this sublime recording. Excellent liner notes by an accomplished writer/musician who really knows this man's music are icing on a delicious cake.

5 out of 5 stars A real talent.......2007-01-25

Luiz Bonfa was a classically trained guitarist who became a wonderful jazz musician and composer. The spontaneity of these solo performances - all miniatures that do not seem brief at all - is matched by the natural sound of the recording. It is hard to believe that it was made with a battery operated tape recorder in one night in 1959. This CD proves that all you need to sound great is real talent.

5 out of 5 stars Bonfa, Brazilian Master.......2006-08-21

This has been an extremely hard to find audio recording from the legendary Brazilian guitarist/composer Luiz Bonfa. Amazingly, the producers included other takes of some of Bonfa's classics which I have never before heard.

Bonfa's guitar virtuosity and composition work are a joy for both guitarists and non-guitarists to enjoy.

I consider this to be a 'must have' collection

The title has been changed from the original A Voila de Luiz Bonfa to Solo in Rio. Buy it - you won't be disappointed.

The second chapter of Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto, A Day In New York picks up where the trio's moody and elegant 2002 debut, Casa, left off and broadens the vision. Rather than covering a broad spectrum of Antonio Carlos Jobim's compositions while stressing lesser-known material, as it did on the debut, Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto does five more Jobim tunes and three songs from other composers as well as three new versions of songs that also appeared on Casa. The playing on this session (a studio date tacked to the end of a tour) is a little more upbeat than the moody debut. Nonetheless, the music is again absolutely stunning thanks to additional help from guitarist Luiz Brasil and percussionist Marcelo Costa. Highlights here include classics "Desafinado" and Joao Gilberto's "Bim Bom" and "Insensitez," all of which couldn't have been done better. Filled with yearning romance, sentimental playing, and the tasteful restraint of classic bossa nova, A Day In New York is a fine follow-up to an excellent debut. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Crossover works!.......2007-04-02

Two superb concert musicians playing the best of traditional Brasilian
pop-- Tom Jobim-- but in a serious manner!. Combine this with a woman whose voice would make Astrud Gilberto green with envy and you have some first rate "Thinking man's (or woman's)" music. This is creativity at its best!
Listen, read a book, WRITE a book, make love; it's the perfect background.

If you like Heavy Metal, I'd suggest you go to the junkyard and hang out with the rottweilwers.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite Bossa Nova album.......2004-04-18

I have more than 20 titles of Bossa Nova music, from Jobim's play to Ono Lisa. This title "Day in New York" is one of my favourite. I suggest all Bossa Nova lovers should have this one. The most impressive paly is "Chega de Saudade", the best version I've ever heard. The whole feeling is just right! Very wild and sexy singer and players.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for Relaxing.......2003-08-08

I bought this CD about 2 days ago and I love it! I purchased this one a few months after thoroughly enjoy their first release "Casa." Unlike "Casa," this one is recorded live. Believe it or not, I'm enjoying their CD's more than the Antonio Jobim CD's I have in my collection!

5 out of 5 stars A Sophisticated Album.......2003-07-16

The Morelenbaums, part of Tom Jobim's musical "family" have done an excellent job once again of proving that his music, some of it now almost 50 years old, is indeed timeless. Jobim's elegant and intricate melodies, combined with Vinícius de Moraes' poetic lyrics keep this music a strong statement of the seductive music Brasil has offered to the world. The brilliant addition of Ryuichi Sakamoto makes this group shine. Reading the liner notes, it would appear that this album was almost an afterthought to the tour-ending of the remarkable previous album by this group, "Casa". What a treat then that the recording was even made! "A Day In New York" is very similiar to "Casa" with a live feel to it and includes, in addition to the Jobim/de Moraes songs, one of João Gilberto's early, fun compositions *Bim Bom* and a haunting song *Coração Vagabundo* (Vagabond Heart) by the superb singer, songwriter etc., etc., Caetano Veloso, as well as a truly gorgeous new song composed, it seems, by the Morelenbaums, Sakamoto and T. Onuki called *Tango*. This song as well as all the others, is superbly sung by the beautiful voice of Paula Morelenbaum. No wonder Jobim wanted her to sing his melodies. She has the gift of being able to sing the "saudade" that is so prevelant in his music, perfectly, and has a crystal clear, sensual voice on these songs. The cello of Jaques Morelenbaum is, as always, achingly beautiful and the piano sound of Sakamoto is eerily like that of Jobim himself. The inclusion of the great guitarist, Luiz Brasil and Marcelo Costa at percussion puts this album over the top. My favorite song on the album? The heart-rending *Chora Coração* by Jobim and de Moraes. Jaques Morelenbaum says in the notes that it is "saddest song that could ever be composed". I would have to agree. Beautiful. This would make a wonderful companion album to "Casa". Here's hoping the Morelenbaums will continue to shine the Jobim light for many more years to come.

2 out of 5 stars elevator music.......2006-08-24

Being an enthusiast of both the Beatles and Bossa Nova, it was natural for "Beatles in Bossa Nova" to peak my curiosity. The previous glowing reviews convinced me to invest in this tribute. Those reviewers have lost all creditability because this CD is simply awful. First, this isn't really Bossa Nova. This is elevator style smooth jazz with a Bossa feel. While the notes claim that this blooper was made in Brazil, it sounds painfully gringo. Second, the production is cornball. Most instruments are synthesized. Though released in 1990, there are enough synthesizers and cheesy keyboards to sound like 1982. Third, the musicians gave uninspiring and lifeless performances. The vocals sound like something off the Lawrence Welk show circa 1964. By a group called Brazilian Tropical Orchestra, I expected and even hoped for a little cheesiness -but this more than what any mortal listener can tolerate. If you want to verify my review, call your bank's customer service department and listen to the background music while you're on hold. The failure of this tribute is especially apparent when compared to the success of like-minded projects such as "Bossa N' Stones" and "Bossa N' Marley." With so many good Beatles tributes, it's a shame to waste your money and ears on "Beatles in Bossa Nova."

FABULOUS! What a fun CD of many of your favorite Beatles songs.
A must for any Beatles fans.

4 out of 5 stars A great mix!.......2000-02-20

This cd is really interesting. The bossa nova tones give to the beatles songs a unique elegancy and pleasant softness. Some outstanding tracks are "The fool on the Hill", "And I love her", and "The long and winding road". Buy this cd, it is really a must for everyone who likes listening beatles songs from a different perspective.

Reaching deep into its cavernous vaults, Verve has extracted a rich bountiful of moody and sentimental jazz, perfect for those long, expectant evenings or those equally long, rain-filled days. Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others.

In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally Shoup

4 out of 5 stars An absolutely stunning collection.......2002-12-10

Ballads, I believe, are the real test of musicianship. And this collection has a judicious and delicious selection which is perhaps the best balanced one I know featuring the all time great moments - Clifford Brown's treatment of Rodgers and Harts Where or When will bring tears to your eyes - as well as quirky less known works - If the Moon Turns Green sung by Billy Holiday - the "old", Ben Webster, along with the "new" Mark Whitfield. Please don't think this is or should be "background" music. You only have to listen to Bill Evans playing with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock on CD1 to realise this is a collection of some of the greatest moments in 20th Century music, regardless of genre.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2002-02-22

This selection contains a bunch of great cuts and a few that I could live without, especially the Blossom Dearie tracks. However, as opposed to most collections with weak tracks, this one flows along so well that it is a pleasure to put all four CDS on and let it play in the background on a quiet evening "In." I prefer the companion 4 CD set called "A Night Out with Verve." I would recommend "Out" over "In."

5 out of 5 stars Jazz novice opinion.......2002-02-11

I am a complete novice when it comes to Jazz. Don't know much about it except that I enjoy it. I have to say this set of CD's is a great mood-setter. Definitely softens the atmosphere and relaxes the body and soul. Great music for a night of serenity and romance

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Sampling of Wonderful Performances.......2001-12-28

I put this cd set on my Amazon wishlist, and was very pleased to get it as a gift from my lover. All the old familiar songs, together with songs that I think I remember from my childhood, transport me to space where romance and sentmentality feel like comfortable old wool sweater. Think I'll just sit back... sip some good hot coffee..and hope the boyfriend joins me on the couch

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow-up to 'A Night Out with Verve' box.......2001-12-19

Beautiful. Billie Holiday blends seamlessly into Dinah Washington into Johnny Hodges into... this four box is the perfect background atmosphere for your swank cocktail party or that evening of candlelight romance. The compilers have collected a remarkable selection of music from classic Verve jazz heavyweights like Elle and Louie, Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, Coleman Hawkins to, surprisingly, a few lesser known French artists such as Michael Legrand (who wrote the score for the French film 'Les Parapluies De Cherbourg') and Laura Fygi. This is a highly recommended classic jazz collection that will beautifully compliment your romantic evening in and will fit nicely into any classic jazz lovers music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Funk from Brazil.......2006-04-13

This is a nice 2 disc set compiled by Gilles peterson. Disc one, "Classic", features songs from the 60's and 70's with a distinctly funky feel to them while disc two features more modern interpretations, but still with funk and soul. Both discs are specific to Gilles Peterson's DJing and compilation style. That is, he goes well off the beaten path to bring up some terrific tracks that may not hit the main-stream/commercial compilation series'.

Disc one starts out with an old Wilson Simonal track "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem"... talk about classic! Nice funk, plenty of attitude. Golden Boys have a version of "Berimbau' that's far different from the Baden Powell version that many are accustomed to. Nice instrumentation and build. Meanwhile "No Caminho do Bem" will remind you of afrocentric tunes in the USA in the 70's... it really is a small world... but accurate for the message of that time (loosely means "get out of the way of good). Another song I enjoyed off the classic disc was O Povo Canta (the people sing). A clip on that, you can see where Timbalada got inspiration some 25 years later! I also dug Jaime Alem & Nair Candia's "Sob O Mar" (Under the Sea, or "underwater"). Like another reviewer I prefer Nair's single version of the song. I also enjoyed "Mario Castro Neves "Candomble" is also a sensational song to add.

Disc 2 is more dedicated to the new artists, but in the same mold of the first. BiD's "Mandigueira" is a fantastic blend of old styles and modern effects, featuring hollow percussion and Elza Soares on vocals. Patricia Marx mixes it up with another London broken beat master group, 4Hero, with "Menino". It's a song with modern soul and flavor to it, starting out like a usual R&B song but with a nice loop to it. Marcos Valle's "Parabens" is also featured, and another great song on disc two includes a jazzed up version of "Escravos do Jo" by Joaquin Claussel & Kerri Chandler. It's got a killer horn, and samples of the more common 'Friends from Rio' version. But I think the real gem in this one is "Futebol de Bar". Slammin' piano, and damned if it doesn't get samba football in your head... hard to explain, but you have to hear this song to hear it - so Brazilian! Even heard it on O Globo here & there.

This double disc set is a wealth of musical knowledge. It's not so random either, and I think Gilles did a terrific job at truly identifying a musical culture outside of the typical "Girl from Ipanema". Real songs, real emotions, real life. I wasn't a fan of all of the songs here but there's more than enough to justify the purchase and I appreciated the alternate interpretations. If you like this, you'll definitely love the "Brazilian Love Affiar" series on Far Out records. You might also like an album titled "Spirit of Brasil" which was designed just like this one, but released maybe 4 years before!

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Album Description

Heralded internationally as an outstanding artist, trumpeter Jens Lindemann has enlisted the talents of The Canadian Staff Band's 30-piece ensemble for his second Marquis recording, Rising Sun.

Lindemann's musicality and virtuosity coupled with the warmth and skill of The Canadian Staff Band clearly demonstrate the brilliance of this collaboration. The music offers an eclectic mix of standard repertoire and original compositions, some of Lindemann's finest work to date.

This musical journey takes the listener from Japanese flavoured pentatonic harmonies found on the title track, to fiery temperaments peppered throughout Slavische Fantasie, and goes on to soothe with the familiar sounds of classic Gershwin delivered in a unique Lindemann style.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Fine Trumpet Playing in a Very Eclectic Program.......2006-09-12

This disc is somewhat in the vein of Philip Smith's CD titled
My Song of Songs. Smith's disc is predominantly arrangements
of Christian hymns and songs, while Lindemann's is secular
except for two tracks. Both are recorded with excellent
Salvation Army brass bands.

Lindemann's sound, range, technical facility and breadth of
musical expression are phenomenal. Trumpet players will be
astonished at the level of control he has over his tone.
Lindemann excels at selling each piece, whether it be a
light piece or a substantial work such as Allen Vizzutti's
new composition. Musical maturity is evident here. He is
stylistically right-on.

Lindemann has a very strong high range and uses it
frequently -- perhaps a bit too frequently, but if I had
the ability to generate excitement like that, I might do
the same. It remains in good taste. Lindemann conveys a
lot of joy in this recording. The use of fluegelhorn and
piccolo trumpet add a variety of colors to his sound and
keep the disc interesting.

A special note must be made of the gorgeous piccolo trumpet
playing in the Vizzutti piece. It is an effortless, full,
and fluid sound. This piece alone is worth the price of the
disc.

The instrumentation of this project -- trumpet with brass
band -- will limit the appeal of the recording for many. This
is unfortunate, for the playing is on an extremely high level
throughout and the music making transcends the instruments
themselves.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars IF ONLY I CAN GIVE THIS ALBUM A SIX STARS!!!.......2007-04-29

I OWNED MOST OF JOAO'S ALBUMS [SOME OUT THERE WERE SIMPLY RECYCLED] BUT THIS MONTREUX ALBUM REALLY STANDS OUT. THIS IS JOAO IN HIS FINEST HOUR --- THE VOICE, THE GUITAR, THE PHRASINGS. IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED BOSSA NOVA BEFORE GIVE THIS ONE A SHOT, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Doesn't Get Any Better.......2005-02-27

If you're looking for a simple, beautiful record of one man and his guitar, you won't find anything better than this. Such a warm intimate sound--- perfect for a summer night with someone you love.

5 out of 5 stars Magic in one day: 1 man, 1voz, 1 violao...voila!.......2003-08-24

This is one of my top 10 recordings of all time. It is History. Seeing that it is live, it is incredible...and absolutely All of the music recorded that wonderful day should be made available. How many artists can bring a packed audience to such heights with such gentleness and such grace? Very few. The way in which Joao so playfully gets the audience to join him in "Felicidade", and the utter soul-baring in "Estate" are two examples of what a true classic this is. Joao even makes "Garota de Ipanema" sound fresh and like the true classic it always will be. The booklet includes lyrics both Portugese (and Italian in the case of "Estate") with English translation. I could write a book, but just get this and hear Live Magic for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars O Mito.......2003-08-19

Like Thelonious Monk, like Erroll Garner, Joao Gilberto has done little to change his style over the course of his musical life. I saw him play a month ago in San Francisco, and at age 73, all that has really changed is his voice, now colored by age, but not even a great deal. He still plays with tremendous focus and ability. And, like Basie's American swing or Django's European swing, he has his own swing which is purely Brazilian and purely Gilberto. And he still prefers to be his own band, dropping even the spare drums he had in the 60s and 70s. The Montreux show is outstanding. The crowd is very receptive, and usually interrupt the first few seconds of a famous song with applause. It's a strange tradition. In typical Gilberto fashion, he mixes the oldies with some newer songs, most notably Caetano Veloso's "Menino do Rio." The other highlights (though there really aren't any lowlights) are "Morena Boca de Ouro," "Pra Que Discutir com Madame," "Sem Compromisso" and "Preconceito."

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING!.......2001-09-06

The best... I'm not even a Bossa Nova fan but this CD kept me into it from the first track to the last! It is extremely relaxing and at the same time gives you an incredible eager to move.
You will be captivated by this amazing CD, especially "Sandalia de Prata", "Pra que discutir com Madame", "Adeus America" and the immortal "Garota de Ipanema".
