This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
Tropicalia in the late 1960s revolutionized Brazilian music mixing Psychedelic Rock, avant-garde musique concrete (tape loops, sound experiments), Samba, Funk and Soul into a truly unique combination. This is the first album to bring together all the artists involved in Tropicalia, Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa and more. Os Mutantes, the sophisticated musical anarchists from Sao Paulo not only became the musical template for Beck, they were also discovered by Kurt Cobain on tour in Brazil who tried (and failed) to get them to support Nirvana. CD comes complete with the customary extensive 40 page booklet that is full of exclusive photos. Soul Jazz. 2006.Album Details

Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19
a) Tom Ze was there.
b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.
c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."
I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.
Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.

The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26
I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.
I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....
More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.

The American producer Creed Taylor produced some of the best recordings Antonio Carlos Jobim ever made. Taylor's lush strings, evocative woodwinds, and selection of top-notch jazz musicians were a perfect match for Jobim's spare, bossa nova-flavored compositions. This 1970 recording features Jobim backed by bassist Ron Carter, trombonist Urbie Green, flutist Hubert Law, and soprano saxophonist Joe Farrell. Several classics, such as "Children's Games," the lilting "Tereza My Love," and the two soft samba/swing renditions of Ary Barroso's "Brazil," are lovingly draped in the velvet arrangements of the then-young Brazilian sensation Eumir Deodato. Jobim's dry and achy vocals, along with his acoustic and rarely heard electric-piano playing, add the right sonic seasoning to this delightful disk. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

Maybe the most precious Jobim treasure.......2006-02-24
Another 5-star Jobim collaboration with producer Creed Taylor for his CTi label with arrangements by Deodato and a team of Jazz master musicians featuring Urbie Green and Hubert Laws.
Repertoire consists of Jobim material except for traditional Brazilian composer Ary Barroso's 'Brazil'.
Part of Jobim's compositions is music he composed for the film 'The Adventurers' also with arrangements by Deodato, issued in a very rare soundtrack album by Paramount label. Unfortunately, out of print.
Refer to the beautiful waltz 'Children's Games' which was also recorded by Elis Regina in her 'Elis & Tom' under the Portuguese title 'Chovendo na Roseira'.
A fundamental Jobim and Bossa Nova and Great Music album!

Luiz Bonfá, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell and Joao Gilberto, helped invent Brazilian Bossa Nova. "The whisper heard around the world" was budding during the 1950s but achieved full flower a decade later. It was a coolly intellectual yet irresistibly melodic marriage of African-derived samba rhythms with American jazz and French Existentialism. Bonfá eventually became world-famous due to his contributions to the score of Orfeo Negro, a much-honored film in which the tragic Greek legend was transmuted to Rio during Carnival time. The present tracks were produced by Emory Cook and this invaluable reissue not only revives a beautiful album but contains 15 previously unreleased tunes. The sonic environment is clear and spacious throughout, uncluttered by unnecessary studio adulterations. Bonfá was not a great singer but his wistful, straight-from-the-heart delivery makes mere technique seem showy and overdone. However, as a guitarist, he had no superiors and few peers. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
One of the most creative guitar virtuosos of the 20th century, Luiz Bonfá is celebrated as one of the principal architects of the cool Brazilian sound of bossa nova - and as co-author, with Antônio Carlos Jobim, of the film score to "Black Orpheus." But Bonfá was far more than the composer of "Manhã de Carnaval." His technical mastery, intimacy, and dynamism suffuse every track of this first CD edition of his masterpiece, a long-unobtainable solo 1959 LP, along with a half-hour of previously unreleased material from the original studio session. 70 minutes, 31 tracks, 32 page booklet with extensive notes by Anthony Weller.Customer Reviews:

The second chapter of Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto, A Day In New York picks up where the trio's moody and elegant 2002 debut, Casa, left off and broadens the vision. Rather than covering a broad spectrum of Antonio Carlos Jobim's compositions while stressing lesser-known material, as it did on the debut, Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto does five more Jobim tunes and three songs from other composers as well as three new versions of songs that also appeared on Casa. The playing on this session (a studio date tacked to the end of a tour) is a little more upbeat than the moody debut. Nonetheless, the music is again absolutely stunning thanks to additional help from guitarist Luiz Brasil and percussionist Marcelo Costa. Highlights here include classics "Desafinado" and Joao Gilberto's "Bim Bom" and "Insensitez," all of which couldn't have been done better. Filled with yearning romance, sentimental playing, and the tasteful restraint of classic bossa nova, A Day In New York is a fine follow-up to an excellent debut. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Reaching deep into its cavernous vaults, Verve has extracted a rich bountiful of moody and sentimental jazz, perfect for those long, expectant evenings or those equally long, rain-filled days. Nicely packaged with nostalgic, sepia-toned photographs on both the box and each individual CD, A Jazz Romance contains nearly 60 songs guaranteed to set a distinctly low- keyed mood, equal parts sultry and sad. The vast majority of the material is from bygone days of the '40s and '50s, with the more recent entries retaining that flavor. The four discs are entitled In Dreams, Ever, Believing, and Always. They're rather interchangeable, sharing many of the same artists and each having as many vocals as instrumentals, yet each does have some distinction from the others. In Dreams features the great saxophones of Johnny Hodges on "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and Ben Webster on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." Ever has marvelous versions of "My Man" by Sarah Vaughn and "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Dexter Gordon. Believing contains a contemporaneous version of "Some Other Time" by guitarist Mark Whitfield and Diana Krall, along with an outstanding example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's versatility on "Alfie." Always, perhaps the dreamiest of the lot, has Chet Baker on "Alone Together," Illinois Jacquet on "Star Dust," and Stan Getz doing "Thanks for the Memories." Concentrating exclusively on the romantic side of jazz, this compilation contains an abundance of subtle, emotional music offering great listening in addition to setting the all-important mood. --Wally ShoupCustomer Reviews:

Funk from Brazil.......2006-04-13
Disc one starts out with an old Wilson Simonal track "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem"... talk about classic! Nice funk, plenty of attitude. Golden Boys have a version of "Berimbau' that's far different from the Baden Powell version that many are accustomed to. Nice instrumentation and build. Meanwhile "No Caminho do Bem" will remind you of afrocentric tunes in the USA in the 70's... it really is a small world... but accurate for the message of that time (loosely means "get out of the way of good). Another song I enjoyed off the classic disc was O Povo Canta (the people sing). A clip on that, you can see where Timbalada got inspiration some 25 years later! I also dug Jaime Alem & Nair Candia's "Sob O Mar" (Under the Sea, or "underwater"). Like another reviewer I prefer Nair's single version of the song. I also enjoyed "Mario Castro Neves "Candomble" is also a sensational song to add.
Disc 2 is more dedicated to the new artists, but in the same mold of the first. BiD's "Mandigueira" is a fantastic blend of old styles and modern effects, featuring hollow percussion and Elza Soares on vocals. Patricia Marx mixes it up with another London broken beat master group, 4Hero, with "Menino". It's a song with modern soul and flavor to it, starting out like a usual R&B song but with a nice loop to it. Marcos Valle's "Parabens" is also featured, and another great song on disc two includes a jazzed up version of "Escravos do Jo" by Joaquin Claussel & Kerri Chandler. It's got a killer horn, and samples of the more common 'Friends from Rio' version. But I think the real gem in this one is "Futebol de Bar". Slammin' piano, and damned if it doesn't get samba football in your head... hard to explain, but you have to hear this song to hear it - so Brazilian! Even heard it on O Globo here & there.
This double disc set is a wealth of musical knowledge. It's not so random either, and I think Gilles did a terrific job at truly identifying a musical culture outside of the typical "Girl from Ipanema". Real songs, real emotions, real life. I wasn't a fan of all of the songs here but there's more than enough to justify the purchase and I appreciated the alternate interpretations. If you like this, you'll definitely love the "Brazilian Love Affiar" series on Far Out records. You might also like an album titled "Spirit of Brasil" which was designed just like this one, but released maybe 4 years before!
*This is the same as the domestic one, only it's an import.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Album Description
Heralded internationally as an outstanding artist, trumpeter Jens Lindemann has enlisted the talents of The Canadian Staff Band's 30-piece ensemble for his second Marquis recording, Rising Sun.Lindemann's musicality and virtuosity coupled with the warmth and skill of The Canadian Staff Band clearly demonstrate the brilliance of this collaboration. The music offers an eclectic mix of standard repertoire and original compositions, some of Lindemann's finest work to date.
This musical journey takes the listener from Japanese flavoured pentatonic harmonies found on the title track, to fiery temperaments peppered throughout Slavische Fantasie, and goes on to soothe with the familiar sounds of classic Gershwin delivered in a unique Lindemann style.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Fine Trumpet Playing in a Very Eclectic Program.......2006-09-12
My Song of Songs. Smith's disc is predominantly arrangements
of Christian hymns and songs, while Lindemann's is secular
except for two tracks. Both are recorded with excellent
Salvation Army brass bands.
Lindemann's sound, range, technical facility and breadth of
musical expression are phenomenal. Trumpet players will be
astonished at the level of control he has over his tone.
Lindemann excels at selling each piece, whether it be a
light piece or a substantial work such as Allen Vizzutti's
new composition. Musical maturity is evident here. He is
stylistically right-on.
Lindemann has a very strong high range and uses it
frequently -- perhaps a bit too frequently, but if I had
the ability to generate excitement like that, I might do
the same. It remains in good taste. Lindemann conveys a
lot of joy in this recording. The use of fluegelhorn and
piccolo trumpet add a variety of colors to his sound and
keep the disc interesting.
A special note must be made of the gorgeous piccolo trumpet
playing in the Vizzutti piece. It is an effortless, full,
and fluid sound. This piece alone is worth the price of the
disc.
The instrumentation of this project -- trumpet with brass
band -- will limit the appeal of the recording for many. This
is unfortunate, for the playing is on an extremely high level
throughout and the music making transcends the instruments
themselves.
Very highly recommended.
