    Product Description

Amy Beach (1873-1942) was probably the first woman composer to gain attention for writing successfully in the large forms of the nineteenth century: symphony, concerto, oratorio and chamber music. But it is in her songs and solo piano music that we glimpse a more private and intimate Beach. Beach produced more than 120 songs, only a few of which are known to the general public. This superb CD presents 22 of Beach s finest songs, a selection which ranges from some of her earliest published efforts through her later brooding masterpieces. American baritone Patrick Mason is accompanied on this recording by leading Beach specialist, pianist Joanne Polk. Together, Mason and Polk s penetrating interpretations make an excellent case for these songs as major English language song literature. These Patrick Mason recordings are also available on Bridge: Schubert: Die Winterreise; with Phyllis East, piano; BRIDGE 9053 Songs of Ravel, Faur , Poulenc and Dutilleux; with Robert Spillman, piano; BRIDGE 9058 Stephen Sondheim: Sunday Song Set; with David Starobin, guitar; on BRIDGE 9009 Tod Machover: VALIS, an opera on the novel by Philip K. Dick; BRIDGE 9007 Elliott Carter: Three Poems of Robert Frost; with Speculum Musicae; on BRIDGE 9014

5 out of 5 stars "SONGS OF AMY BEACH" IS TIMELESS.......2005-12-30

What a delight! I received this disc as a gift and enjoyed it more than any set of songs since the first time I heard Schubert's "Die Schoene Mullerin".

Amy Beach's charming songs for baritone and piano, written at the turn of the century, escape any hint of sentimentality and travel straight to the heart, sometimes with complexity, but often with timeless simplicity.

"Sweetheart, Sigh No More" is the most enchanting love song I have heard in years. You will long to be desperately in love again. Patrick Mason woos his lover with a luscious baritone that reminds me of Dietrich Fischer-Diescau's and a wonderful intimacy made up of tenderness, humor, and masculinity.

The interpretations of Mr. Mason and Joanne Polk are passionate, thoughtful and vital. Some are whimsical, such as "Wouldn't That Be Queer" and some are just plain wise and fresh, as in "Baby".

Hats off to Mr. Mason, Ms. Polk and Bridge Records for a real beauty!

Give a copy of this disc to everyone you love.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of All........2005-12-28

Of all the album releases for the solo career of David Gates. Love Is Always Seventeen is the best by far. Which proves he's still got it. Every selection on this CD is awesome! And with other talents to back him up (Billy Dean, Larry Knechtel, Lee Roy Parnell to name a few). This CD is a can't miss. And if anyone doubts the man's ability. Check out the note liner to the song "Heart It's All Over". David played every instrument in the selection. A very intelligent musician/singer/songwriter of our time. The last selection, David is paying tribute to James Taylor in "Sweet Baby James". I'd just like pay a little tribute to Mr. Gates by saying, "Thanks for the great tunes all these years. Any may GOD BLESS you and your family!"

4 out of 5 stars an abundance of Gates' melodic mastery & great vocals.......2005-06-02

One thought that really comes to mind with David Gates is that he's a man of quality over quantity. After a LONG hiatus from his musical career, Gates returned in the latter half of 1994 with "Love Is Always Seventeen", his first album since 1981. Granted, neither of Gates' previous two albums--1979's "Falling In Love Again" and 1981's "Take Me Now"--even reached the top 200 on the US album chart, so you could say that his popularity had reached a low, but without a doubt he still had a devoted fanbase and probably could have mounted a commercial comeback had he really wanted to. However, it seems that he felt the time was right for a break from the music business--perhaps he wasn't keen on following trends in pop music in order to lift his commercial fortunes, perhaps he was concerned about tarnishing his reputation, or maybe he just felt he had "said all he had to say" for the time being and wanted to explore a different path in his life.

With "Love Is Always Seventeen", Gates stays true to himself once again, and the result is a very welcome return indeed. Of the 11 tracks on the CD, 3 songs--"I Will Wait For You", "No Secrets In A Small Town, and "I Can't Find The Words To Say Goodbye--were written by David Gates and Billy Dean. 7 songs were written solely by Gates, and his incredible ear for melody clearly remains intact, plus his vocals are superb. As you'd expect from Gates, lots of ballads are here... The contemplative "Heart, It's All Over" is heartbreakingly beautiful (even with the intentional grammatical error on the second verse) and has a gut-wrenching bridge. The sighing title track is about an undying hope of finding true love eventually--it's profoundly moving. "Save This Dance For Me" and "I Can't Find The Words To Say Goodbye" aren't as strong, but they're still soothing ballads that feature Gates' smooth, warm vocals and tasteful, restrained production. There are a couple of fantastic, haunting mid-tempo pop-rockers--the superbly-harmonized "In The Air Tonight"-ish "I Don't Want To Share Your Love"; and "Avenue Of Love", with cutting, incisive lyrics which incorporate sly humor including an amusing chorus hook. The yearning "Dear World" and the relatively gritty "No Secrets In A Small Town" are solidly enjoyable tracks as well. The everyman-tribute "Ordinary Man" is the one track that Gates didn't write or co-write, and it's rather sugary, but it's no big disaster. Gates ends the album with the James Taylor tribute "Thankin' You Sweet Baby James"--the incorporation of a bunch of titles of Taylor songs in the lyrics is kind of eyeroll-inducing--but at the same time, it's a wonderfully melodic song with an affectionately Taylor-styled arrangement.

It's really satisfying to see David Gates, one of the great geniuses in music history, so in touch with his strengths and in such fine form on this album--no fan should hesistate to get a copy of this.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back to an "ol' friend" and great artist!.......2003-05-24

David Gates left the music industry in the early '80's- all too soon for me. 13 years passed and at least 100 times that number I would walk into a record store with the thought, "I wonder if David Gates has put out a new album?" In April 1995, I was killing some time while waiting for a Little Richard concert at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center with that very thought. Then I happened on "Love Is Always Seventeen" staring at me from the CD rack. I had to pinch myself and make sure it wasn't a mirage.

David Gates always leaned a bit to a country style in many of Bread's tunes. In this album, he moves a bit closer to the country genre as several '70's pop rocks stars have such as Dan Seals of England Dan & John Ford Coley. Mr. Gates has penned 7 new songs and co-written 3 songs with country singer Billy Dean. The album was engineered in Nashville.

This is a nice collection of songs! Mr. Gates continues to shine as a familar star with the soft ballads "Save This Dance For Me," "Heart's It's All Over" and "I Will Wait For You," co-written with Dean. Two of my favorites are "I Can't Find The Words To Say Goodbye" (classic David Gates lyrics- and it was nice to "see" and hear former Bread co-member Larry Knechtel playing piano on this song!) and "Dear World" (nice sentiment and great orchestration). He ends this album as the true, humble person David Gates has always been with a wonderful song tribute to a co-contemporary of his- James Taylor.

In his early mid-50's, Gates' voice sounds as good as ever- able to hit the high notes as smoothly as ever in his unique signature style. To all hard-core David Gates fans, this CD will please you on many old- and new- levels of his talent. Hopefully, this signals his return and we won't have to wait another 13 years to hear more of what this incredible talent has to "say" to us.

4 out of 5 stars Bread for the hungry.......2003-01-01

'Love is always seventeen' really touched my heart. I've been waiting for a long time for new material from David Gates, as he's been one of my favorite composers/songwriters since the early seventies. Although you may miss the freshness and creativity of his former song arrangements on this album (like you will find on the outrageous album 'First' from 1973), you will hardly find more essential songs like 'Love is always seventeen' or 'I don't wanna share your love' on other todays albums. Most of all I was impressed by the last song on the CD: with 'Thankin' You Sweet Baby James' Gates gives tribute to another great composer of his generation. Now we're waiting impatiently for the new album. David, you're like good red wine: getting older means getting more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

5 out of 5 stars SILENT YEARS no more!!!!.......2007-07-17

William Perry's wonderful music from THE SILENT YEARS (films from the Paul Killiam collection) charmed me instantly when the series ran on PBS back in 1971. At the time I was fiendishly practicing classical guitar morning, noon and night and almost nothing could tear me away, but the first few notes of the series theme, "Georgia" from the Chaplin film THE GOLD RUSH, did it every time. I looked forward to the films just to hear the wonderful musical scores. Knowing the main themes of LIMELIGHT and MODERN TIMES to be Chaplin's own, I thought for years that Chaplin himself had composed the GOLD RUSH (and series) theme and even at one time ventured to the Library of Congress Music Reading Room to implore the folks there to help me find it. Unsuccessful there (one of the few times I ever was), I did my own arrangement by ear and toyed with it for a few years for fun.

This music is everything one could wish silent film music to be. It's unabashedly bold and dramatic, romantic, warm, engaging and tuneful. It doesn't sound at all dated and has not a hint of the cliche Keystone Cop sound. My favorites are the suites from the THE GOLD RUSH, Barrymore's THE BELOVED ROGUE (a great, great historical romantic adventure film, incidentally) and Valentino's BLOOD AND SAND. Two of the ROGUE themes - the one introduced after Villon's (Barrymore's) father is burned at the stake, which comes to represent the father's legacy, and the love theme - regularly move me literally to tears. Perry is a very, very agile and sensitive pianist and a remarkable composer. He's a brilliant melodist and his feel for dramatic construction is so strong that one is simply swept along breathless. I'm reminded of Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy" and the characteristic pieces of Albeniz, "Suite Espanola" in particular.

I'm not certain that I saw every one of the 12-15 films in the series (I think I missed INTOLERANCE), but I remember quite well that of all the films I saw, only one, SALLY OF THE SAWDUST, an early W.C. Fields film, had an organ score rather than piano. So, there's at least the possibility that a few more Perry piano score suites could see a CD release someday. Here's hoping for SON OF THE SHEIK and BROKEN BLOSSOMS!!!!

What a great collection of original material.

Shame about the skimpy and sycophantic liner notes.

      5 out of 5 stars An Artist's Artist.......2006-03-18

Danielle Woerner has long been prized on the classical music scene for the exquisite intelligence of her singing and the distinctive beauty of her voice. Her range is and has been astonishing--from opera to art song--and in this recording one can her that sound and intimate sensibility which has earned her such a splendid name. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Luscious and deeply moving.......2000-12-29

Danielle Woerner's voice is so rich and mellow, you can get lost in it. I was not familiar with this repertoire, and found Luening's setting of Emily Dickinson to be marvelous--sometimes serious, sometimes playful, always true to the deep emotions. I also liked the setting of William Blake's "Ah, Sun-flower", which Luening composed especially for this singer. I found myself listening over and over to the poems of Gail Godwin as set by her partner and collaborator, Robert Starer. The compositions are moving and complex, and Woerner makes excellent musical choices for presenting them in a way that the audience can truly feel. Highly recommended.
