4 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2007-01-30

This is a brilliant album - Inti-Illimani, John WIlliams, Paco Peña? C'mon! This is music that will reward patient listeners. This is deeply soulful, social protest music. Non-Spanish speakers should try to track down the lyrics and find a way of translating them, to appreciate the meaning and the sentiment.
As for the reviewer who copies and pastes the same review for all his reviews of Inti-Illimani's discs... "...the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende..." - I don't think one line in a review makes it a political venue, but you have just made it into one with your few paragraphs praising Pinochet.

4 out of 5 stars Let us learn to appreciate their great music without..........2005-12-30

It has been an enormous pleasure to listen to Inti Illimani for the past 20 years. Definitely great musicians and great recordings, to say the least. However the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende and call his deplorable and failed communist period in power exciting, and Pinochet's years "the frightening Pinochet years" (read reviews under The Best of Inti Illimani), can only come from the twisted mind of someone who still believes in 20th Century myths: the myth of Fidel Castro, the myth of Che Guevara, the myth of the proletariat, etc. Having survived 11 years in a communist country I know better, a lot better. All of us should by now. Unfortunately we do not. Look at Venezueza and now Bolivia, with the two puppets in power dancing to the music of Fidel Castro.
Frightening years for whom? For the communists and all members of the red tribe of disciples of Fidel Castro, of course. Today, to still call Pinochet a dictator and Fidel Castro "president" is beyond comprehension. Look at Chile today. Can anyone believe it could have become what it is now without eliminating Allende's regime and crushing the communists?
I give Inti Illimani an A for their music. Let us learn to appreciate their great music without praising their disastrous and failed political views. For that, they get capital F.

5 out of 5 stars INTI'S MASTERWORK.......2005-11-13

I used to buy Inti's LPs when I was 12 and I was schooling in Italy.
It still remains one of my favourite musical groups of all time.
Fragments of a Dream is, simply put, their masterwork, the one where Horacio Salinas reaches the greatest heights of inspiration in a blend I would call, at times, "modern Latin American baroque".
It starts with a piece inspired by my fatherland's folk music, Sardegna, and ends with a dismantling-cum-reconstruction of the principle of the dance worthy of any great classical composer. Brilliant

5 out of 5 stars Manns, Salinas, Peña, Williams, Inti una gran combinación........2000-05-08

5 out of 5 stars Quisiera ser paloma para volar.......1999-05-07

    1 out of 5 stars hugely disappointed.......2006-09-21

Having been introduced to the Lisbon sound of Fado with the likes of Madredeus, Mariza, Christina Branco, Ana Moura, Dulce Pontes, Amelia Rodrigues, and a host of other fine singers and discs, I had always been impressed with the arrangements and accompaning guitar ensembles. For this reason I decided to perhaps broaden my exposure to Portuguese music and ordered this disc.

I was hugely disappointed. Not only does one song nearly sound like the next and the next and the next and almost seamlessly flow into each other (you can tell they end by the long pause between each one) but the overall recording quality of this disc is very poor.

I can not recommend this disc to anyone. Hey, that's my opinion, but isn't that what these reviews are about? For my money, I'd stick with known guitar ensembles and quality recordings from the likes of Madredeus.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous piece of music by one of the most virtuous player.......2001-05-29

This is a great CD, where you get to know some of the standards for Portuguese Guitar, as well as some great compositions by this great player. Pedro Caldeira Cabral is, after Carlos Paredes, the best Portuguese Guitar player of our times. It's a great experience for those music lovers who enjoy virtuous playing. It's a must.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars incredible playing of mixed musical content.......2005-02-02

Luis de Pablo represents the first post war generation in Spain, a lawyer, his music has graced all the primary festivals of new music in Europe, not so much the USA,nothing at all. He writes incredibly for strings in any genre there, solo, duets or trios. These pieces are more colorful mixtures of winds percussion, piano and strings and reveals a certain surface playfulness, an affinity for the dance gesture I think. The Notturnino has a kind of wispy arid flush of colours, ongoing quite obsessed with not stopping any place for too long a time. I think we get(come to comprehend) the colours more from these durational bursts of fragments. Likewise the Concierto here though the proceedings stop to contemplate "hanging" chords from the piano, but again you have quick rushes of timbre, sharp clean, like overdetermined punctuations of phrase, or short poetic lines, clipped, fast sharp. We don't get to relative darkness until Dibujos, here with timbre barely audible pppp, we have nice clean textures flute, violin, clarinet and violoncello. de Pablo likes his players here to mold themselves together,no sticking out of the texture. And again the Five Meditations and the Four Fragments have similar Baroque like agendas for parcelling out colours, as nice un-noiselike actually beautiful flute fluttertonguing and gestures one at a time, There is nothing opaque here. There really is nothing deeply profound here, this is like music for the theatre. He does have more concentrated and focused works as his string music. But overall there is a mystery to de Pablo's music, he searches for an undefined image, he loves the "Night" it seems the form of the nocturne. Arnold Schoenberg once said that contemporary music should be performed only at night. Here Ensemble 2e2m are simply incredible players, sharp clean attacks, wonderful ensemble of shape and direction. You have real soloists at work here, like trapeze artists waiting to go across the canvas of the tent in mid air without a net. 2e2m plays with this sense of danger always.
