Gabrielle - Sunshine.......2005-07-02

Well what can I say about Gabrielle? She is like an Angel - Her song Sunshine is so soothing and it's like a dream. If you have not yet discovered this amazing artist - I suggest you do.
I discovered this terrific singer from a friend who lives halfway around the world - dreams can come true - every where u turn there is the Sunshien in your Window! 5 stars!

An excellent compilation by one of the UK's leading females.......2003-06-10

Gabrielle's voice is so moving and so utterly-what's the word F-U-N-K-A-Y - that the fact that she's not more well-known around the world is a true tragedy. All of these songs are brilliantly produced and performed. I'm a big fan of her more recent album, "Rise", but the earlier material contained here is by no means less compelling.
Favorite songs: dreams, give a little more time, sunshine, rise, should i stay, out of reach, don't need the sun, if i walked away.
There are no low points on this excellent retrospective. If you're into elegant R&B & pop, you can't miss this!

Rise.......2002-09-25

I absolutely love Gabrielle's voice and I sincerely wish that she was more well known in the states, most Americans don't know what they are missing. I don't recall exactly how I came to purchase the CD Rise, perhaps by sheer luck. I must admit that it is one of my favourites! I would recommend Gabrielle to anyone who appreciates talent and beautiful music

Smooth Soul From Over The Atlantic.......2002-05-21

Sadly, Gabrielle is a virtual unknown in America, but in the UK she is the most successful female solo artist since Dusty Springfield and that is certainly a huge achievement!

Evoking the spirit of soul, but with a decidedly pop-influenced style as well, Gabrielle's songs (all but one of the tracks on this greatest hits are co-written by her) are generally about love and life, overcoming heartache, standing up for one's self and becoming a better person.

Her one top 30 hit in America, 'Dreams', opens the album but is actually one of the weaker tracks vocally and melodically. On tracks like 'Forget About The World' and 'If You Really Cared' she shows a stronger, fiercer side to her voice, not to mention a more interesting talent for songwriting. She touches on very Motown territory on tracks like 'Give Me A Little More Time' (another huge standout) and 'When A Woman' and rounds the album off with haunting ballads 'Should I Stay' and 'Out Of Reach'.

Arranged chronologically, it is interesting to hear how her musical style develops over the 9 years she has been in the business. From the early-90s dance pop in 'Going Nowhere', to her experimenting with a more 'live' sound in the middle of the album, to her lessons of life in the possibly more mature second half of the album, we can experience this woman's struggles with her and relate to the things she's singing to.

Great album to chill to or even to cry to. Fingers crossed that she may still break America. We'll see. :)

Acoustic Dance/Soul At Its' Best.......2002-03-10

Though she hasn't managed to gain much ground stateside since 'Dreams' was a minor hit in the early nineties, Gabrielle remains one of the U.K.'s most popular vocalists, and listening to this collection reaffirms the justification of that popularity. Though 'Dreams' remains one of her bests, there's more here to make one question why she couldn't muster much attention beyond that track here in the states. 'Give Me Just A Little More Time'finds her mining Motown territory, while both 'Sunshine' and 'When A Woman' suggests she had more than a passing affinity for sixties girl group pop. Among the many other standouts:new track 'Don't Need The Sun To Shine'and the sterling'Out Of Reach', quite possibly her finest moment. Highly recommended.

Dreams Come True is one of the most well-known groups in Japan. Vocal is really great. although the style of their songs is changed year by year, I like their songs released in early times. it's good to know their early times by having this album!

The Best!!.......2007-02-14

If you've ever heard Roy Orbison sing, then this review is not needed. I've had all his recordings and though there are ones that are better than others, there is not a bad one in the bunch!! This CD is no exception. It has his greatest, most heart rendering selections plus a few 'feel good' tunes also.

If you have never heard Roy Orbison sing, then you should have this album just for the sheer joy of hearing something you have never heard before and will never hear anywhere else again!

Re-recorded and oh my, it sounds great!.......2006-01-07

First got a hold of this back in the 80s in the midst of building a collection of rock and roll's founding fathers. Miffed upon learning these were re-recordings, I considered returning it. After a few hearings, though, I began to think I purchased a real gem.

Roy's voice had matured by the time "In Dreams" was cut, but had lost none of its pitch or resonance. In fact, one could argue that he was in full bloom as a singer here. Put aside, for a moment, the original Orbison recordings. Of course nothing can replace them -- they're history. But taken in its own measure, "In Dreams" gives you faithful performances of Roy's greatest songs with excellent production quality.

"In Dreams" contains neither schmaltz nor schlock nor the reverb-less Jeff Lynne sound that characterized Roy's work with the Travelling Wilburys. "Only the Lonely," "Leah," "Running Scared," and "Ooby Dooby" are still ghostly and still send shivers down the spine.

If not authentic, it is quite true to the original source matter. Kudos to Roy (R.I.P.) for keeping faith with the strength of his original arrangements and sound. Highly recommended.

Orbison Revisits Himself...and Still Shines..........2005-03-05

I purchased this album as an LP when it was first released in 1987. I was glad at the time that the original arrangements were retained for the new digital recordings of Orbison's biggest hits. As for the vocal performances, while the original 50's and 60's recordings capture a certain vulnerable quality to Roy's voice (especially in his ballads) that helped give those songs such atmosphere and urgency, these later recordings show him to be in the best voice of his storied career, stronger throughout his wide range and with richer timbre. If the ballads do not have quite the interpretive freshness of the originals, the sheer beauty of the vocals compenates. If anything, the up-tempo numbers are perhaps more infectious in these versions---Orbison sings with real verve; one gets the impression he really enjoyed this recording project. In the end, there is really little to quibble with between these recordings and the originals. In either case, Orbison is fully revealed as both a master songsmith and vocalist. Purchase both and be twice as happy!

Great Album.......2005-02-14

IF this is the same album that I have on cassette, it is GREAT. This was the first Roy Orbison album that I had ever bought, except there is a big differance from what is pictured here; mine has a blue cover with a surrealistic, dream-like scene at a Drive-In with a pink caddilac. It has an Intro by Bruce Springsteen in the liner notes. It was put out in 1987 by Virgin Records. But I must belive that somehow these albums are one and the same. I am lead to this conclusion beacuse the tracks are identical, and in the same order. In addition to that, I cannot believe that a recording of this magnitude would simply disappear.

If somebody has any knowledge of these possible changes in label and cover design, please let me know. I would like to be certain that these two are one and the same before I place an order.

Back to the review; this is a great album, it is my understanding that this got started when they were making the movie 'Blue Velvet' and they wanted to use 'In Dreams' as a promonent song in the movie, but they wanted Roy to re-record it to fit their needs. I guess that he got so much positive feedback from that one song he decided to make an entire album.

My experiance is the exact opposite of some of the reviewers here. Like I said this was my first Orbison album, and it was on cassette. Many years later when I was replacing my entire collection with CD's, I picked up Roy's greatest hits (the original recordings), by now I was so used to the re-recorded songs that to me THEY were the original recordings, and the real originals were not as desirable to me.

Ever since then I've been looking for this particular CD. Now finally it looks like the mystery has been solved. I am just curious as to why they would take what I consider to be a more attractive cover and replace it with one that is less attractive, that makes little sense to me.

PURCHASED CD WITHOUT THE FACTS! MY OWN FAULT!.......2004-09-02

Yes, I did purchase this CD without reading the reviews which was a major faux pas, and I was really irritated with myself when I heard the re-mix! (Actually, NOW it reminds me of the Black and White Video which I adore!) However, this CD has just given me another version of Roy's incomparable vocals and background to enjoy! Yes, I know every nuance of the original recordings, but, this surely is a wonderful re-mix of my favorite songs. I will though, be more careful in the future - and read ALL of the reviews before I purchase. I tend to want the original recordings more often than not - THIS CD is the EXCEPTION to the rule! Truly a gem....

My brother had this cassette tape when I was 11 years old,cruisin' around in his convertable,and everytime I listen to this it brings back great memories.I'm so glad I have the cd.All of these recordings on here were done in the mid 1980's,so there may be some people that don't care much for these remakes of old 60's classics,but I think they just bring out so much more brilliance in Roy's voice.His voice is so haunting it brings chills everytime I listen.This cd is actually the old 1987 virgin records copy,and I like the artwork so much better than the newer 1997 re-release.For true Orbison fans,I definetly recommend buying this one!
