Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars What Happened At The Social Club.......2004-06-01

The location is New Orleans, and it's the early '60s all the way through: others have their new horizons, and Lee Dorsey is fixing Valiants at his auto body shop. Is all not well? There's someone to ask, and a place to ask it -- the social club, where people from all walks of life gather to discuss the issues of the day. Is there an *eminence grise*? Certainly, as Henry Roeland Byrd will be the first to tell you. But in the meantime, there is Watch Records and there is no harm done in taking a slightly "philosophical" attitude towards life amidst a certain level of "degeneracy" in social mores -- the music presented to us by this organization is exciting enough, but what it is not is *salacious*. If the "Big Chief" is around, any number of arrangements are possible, provided that the communal need for a humane organization of discourse concerning economic matters: and if that wasn't enough, there's more than a little bit of generality to go around here. After all, perhaps there is a little more solidity to traditional offices than is sometimes reckoned, and something of a universal promise in the carnivalesque of Louisiana.
