Album Description

Tanzania is the new music capital of East Africa and from the spice islands of Zanzibar to the shores of the great lakes, The Rough Guide To The Music Of Tanzania explores the diversity of the country's culture as expressed in its popular music. This album features hip-hop with a Maasai tinge, Haya vocal rhythms from Lake Victoria, acoustic taarab sounds from the Indian Ocean, together with the guitars and horns of Dar Es Salaam's most famous dance bands.

5 out of 5 stars The Diverse sounds of East African civilization.......2006-04-19

The East African nations of Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda and Southern Somalia were all either a part of or heavily influenced by the Swahili civilization, whose prototype emerged as an indigenous civilization as early as 100 BC.

The civilization flourished independent of foreign political domination until 1500 AD, when the combination of European Imperialism and Middle Eastern expansionists raped and pillaged the Swahili and forced them into a cycle of destruction against themselves and their neighbors inland.

Regardless, the East African spirit has perservered and found independence through unity. If you want to hear the development of such unity in the form of classical Swahili music alongside Maasai youth embracing African American culture through Hip Hop, then there is no better place to start than this compilation.

Normally, I'm not a fan of The Rough Guide to "This Oppressed Country's Music" brought to you by their exploitative oppressors, but it is difficult to find East African music outside of such compilations in the United States. Unlike Western Africans, who are arguably the most influential people in modern music (via African Americans as well as contemporary "World Music" charts), Eastern Africa has not produced the equivalents of Fela Kuti or Salif Keita.

However, this region of the world has a rich musical heritage. The ancient combination of East African musical arrangements with the traditional Afro-asiatic style that emerged with Islam is noticable on several of the songs. Like it has in most of the world, West African sensibilities have also influenced the music of the Tanzanian people.

Like Mali, whose ancient heritage has created a sophistication in their music that they lead Africa's musical creativity, the combined legacy of Tanzania's Swahili civilization and their remarkable inland people such as the Maasai can bring forth this country for the rest of the world to hear.

Absolutely love this CD, reminds me of my high school years growing up in TZ just a few years ago, and Juma Nature and friends rhyme about everything from life, love, liberty, politics and just about anything else relevant. Mind you, it's in Kiswahili, but I still think anyone can appreciate the sounds of this album.

True talent, good sound... a great mix for anyone who loves rap/hip-hop and African music... this is a smooth, smooth album.

Zawose can perform magic with his voice. He and his son--armed only with voices, thumb pianos, a Tanzanian violin, and ankle bells--create a landscape that takes you far away from the wherever you reside. So you don't understand a word? Who cares? The meaning and joy seep into your mind. This is music for the love of making music--something we seem to have largely forgotten in the rush of industry, biz, and hype. This is simply beauty on a stick. And it doesn't hurt that Zawose has one of the world's most mesmerizing voices. It grabs you and won't let go, like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and perhaps one or two others. So listen to this, and then try to claim there's no magic in the world anymore. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars my new favorite album.......2005-03-26

after being music director of a college radio station for several years, i was exposed to unbelievable amounts of music and hype, which left me hating most music i encountered. it's good to know that i can still get excited about artists. i can listen to hukwe zawose over and over without it feeling like a terrible chore. highly, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing musician !.......2000-05-11

The music on this album is so amazing, it is far beyond words. Hukwe Zawose's voice is nothing like you have ever heard before. Sometimes it is soft and sweet, sometimes growling and heavy. The songs are all wonderful. Each song drew me inside to a strange and beautiful world of sounds. I believe this cd is one of the best cd's I have ever had. Anyone who likes music must have it !

5 out of 5 stars You cannot dislike this music.......1999-04-05

What else can you ask more?this is the height of Remmy or as we call him dr.Remmy!anyone who knows his music will agree with me.He is not only just a musician but also a story teller;in his songs,Remmy tries to tell a story of an ordinary mwananchi(mlalahoi)socially and politically.Super matimila has dozens of songs but unforturnally very few has been put on cd...And it is not true that his english songs are weak as one user mentioned above, please note that, he is native speaker of lingala na swahili if you can't understand him in those two languages; then you can't get the real message....

2 out of 5 stars My first Ongala disappointment.......2005-12-01

I thought this was one of Ongala's original recordings to remind me of 'good old days' growing up along the lake shores of western Kenya. It turns out this is Ongala renditioning some of his old popular songs in the English language. Comes out as artistically weak and unoriginal in my opinion. However, if you never knew Ongala's work of the 80s, or are not a diehard fan of authenticity you may actually find this CD enjoyable.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2004-04-24

This is a superb album for people or all musical tastes. The singing is polished and soulful. The rhythm section is exciting and compelling. But the guitar playing, in particular, is quite wonderful -- enormously complex and sophisticated, but also beautifully musical and melodic. If you like the music of Central and East Africa, you'll love this. If you've only heard West African performers, this will open a new world to you. If you've not had much experience with contemporary African sounds, this would be a great place to jump in. Get two copies, coz you'll wear the first one out!

5 out of 5 stars Its an excellent CD. Mrema track highlights corruption.......1999-06-18

The CD has the smooth taste of Swahili music. I recommend the CD to all East Africans abroad. As usual Remmy is at his best again.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful taste of Tanzania with a Congolese accent........1999-05-12

Everytime I hear Remmy sing,it reminds me so much of the Congolese sound that I love so much.

This ambitious three-CD collection is quite simply the best introduction to the diverse popular music of Africa that there is. While it stands by itself as the perfect instant African music collection, it also serves as a fine jumping off point for exploring Africa's myriad musical cultures. The producers have done an excellent job selecting outstanding tracks by a broad variety of Africa's premier groups and recording stars from all over the continent. This compilation offers maximum diversity and impeccable sound quality throughout. The lushly illustrated and annotated 48-page booklet that comes with this set is rich with information about this crucial musical continent. --Jeff Grubb

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Very Thorough Guide to Afro-Pop.......2006-08-14

Africa is a vast continent, the second largest in fact, and home to an infinite variety of languages, cultures and ethnic groups; each with their own style of music. With the growing popularity of Afro-Pop the newcomer is likely to be overwhelmed with the sheer variety of music available even from mainstream stores and websites in the west. Where to begin? What artists and styles sound best? Unfortunately, few CDs can give a good overview of African music, but if your willing to drop the money for this one, your off to a very good start.

On three CDs, we are given an astonishing array of tracks by 39 artists from over 29 different countries. This does a great job of shwoing the incredible diversity of African music. We get Arabic-tinged taarab from Zuhura Swaleh of Kenya, Zulu isicathamiyalmbube from Ladysmith Black Mambazo of South Africa, Nigerian Fuji music by Chief Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Moorish dancing music from Mauritania's Dimi Mint Abba, Mbalax from Baaba Maal of Senegal, Malagasy music from Tarika Sammy of Madagascar, Algerian Rai from Bellemou & Gana el Maghnaoui, Ethio-pop from Seleshe Demassae and so much more. The focus is on pop, but you get a good helping of traditional and folk styles like the Mande music of Mali, polyrhythmic drumming from Ghana, Sufi music from the Gnawa musicians of Morocco and traditional dances from Uganda's national performing troupe.

Many of the continent's legendary artists on included on this CD, though obviously not all of them (as doing so would likely be impossible). Oumou Sangare, Salif Keita and the late Ali Farka Toure of Mali; Oliver Mtukudzi, Stella Chiweshe and Thomas Mapfumo of Zimbabwe; Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Soul Brothers from South Africa; Papa Wemba from the Congo; Abdel Gadir Salim of the Sudan; Yossou N'dour and Baaba Maal of Sengal and many more. Alongside them are many equally great performers, perhaps less known in the US but many times equally famous in their home countries. Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister of Nigeria is regarded as one of the greatest Fuji performers, while Remmy Ongala is probably Tanzania's most famous pop singer.

Don't feel bad if some of your favorite artists got left off of this vast and staggering compilation. It's only a broad survey of Africa's musical styles. If your a newbie to Afro-pop, or even a life-long fan, this CD is an essential buy. Its one of the few compilations that covers EVERYTHING, from the Arabic tinged music of the Sahara to the the neo-traditional songs of South Africa, from traditional drumming in West Africa to modern pop styles from the Congo and Swahili coast. If you've got the money and are willing to spend it, this is a great buy. If your on a budget, theres a smaller sampler available that's equally exciting, though nowhere near the size of this monster. I strongly recommend checking this CD it. Odds are it will expand your musical horizons.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best..........1999-12-07

I have maybe 25 CDs of music from the continent, and this is still far and away my favorite. The one-disc "sampler" is like a "Best of..." -- very good, but as many listeners will know from first hand experience, some of the finer, and more subtle pieces are in the original complete recordings. True here in spades. If you only own one set of discs to represent Africa and all its nations and sounds, this is it.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection!.......1998-07-07

If you're interested in listening to some African music and don't know where to start, you can't do better than this. It's got modern and traditional stuff on it -- mostly modern -- from all over the continent. My tapes of this set live in my cassette road case, and I listen to them when I go on long trips. The variety and quality are both excellent.

The booklet's a nice touch, too.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Mojo.......2002-10-15

Don't come to this CD expecting nganga, cannibalism and dark witchcaft. Nor should you come to this CD expecting contemporary African music (although you could see some of my other reviews for that). Instead, this CD is a survey of the religious and healing musical traditions in Kenya and Tanzania. Made at a time when many traditions were all but unknown to the outside world, the detailed linear notes do show some dating. For instance, I'm not sure the term "witch" or "witchdoctor" should even be used. Given the negative view of witches in African culture, the term shaman or priest might be more appropriate. None the less, the music here is still potent. This is real tribal music, focusing on healing traditions, as well as spirituality and rites of passage. Give this CD a look.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST authentic tribal music around!.......2000-02-06

This is the best authentic tribal music collection that I have ever heard! Whereas most of today's tribal is found to be only inspired by authentic tribal music and corrupted by outside influences, this is the REAL THING. This CD is a collection of field recordings of everyday people playing their music in the process of performing their sacred rituals. Regardless of negative comments by other reviewers, this CD is spiritual and inspiring and will have you dancing around the room. That is, unless you are spiritually deprived as is common of modern man. I only wish I could find such a recording of this magnitude of the indigenous tribes of South America.

3 out of 5 stars Authentic but on the dark side; not easy listening.......1998-08-02

My acquaintance with Tanzanian music comes from two years' residence near a village on the outskirts of Dar-es-Salaam 20 years ago. The drums beat all night long on many nights, and the women chanted and trilled. This CD sounds reasonably authentic but not the upbeat, vibrant sound I heard most often. This CD sounds like devil music, but lacks the strong repetitive power of many chants I have heard. As the title indicates: bad witchcraft. This CD is definitely the dark side of Africa--a side I never really experienced in two years of speaking Swahili every day.

5 out of 5 stars Really good African compilation.......2004-02-10

There are so many compilations out there, and this is one of the best. Regardless of how "important" or "representative" the songs chosen here are, they all sound great! A wonderful addition to any world or African music collection, and great for a beginner in African/world music!

      5 out of 5 stars A journey south.......2003-04-22

This album is the sixth in a series of introductions to the world's great musical traditions. Each volume is built around a geographical theme and produced by an acknowledged expert in that area.

The African journey commences in Algeria and then heads South, stopping off in Cape Verde, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Gabon, Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Madagascar, before terminating in South Africa. The 14 tracks are representative but slightly atypical of their regions; most share a semi-acoustic yet modern and edgy esthetic. While a single CD cannot possibly showcase the music of an entire continent, these examples are a good way to get acquainted - or reacquainted - with Africa's stunning musical diversity. The set culminates in a moving rendition of the South African national hymn "Nkosi Sikilele I'Afrika," as performed by the Imilonji Kantu Choral Society, who sang it at former President Nelson Mandela's inauguration.
