Raider Genius.......2006-12-21

These two classic Columbia albums are not to be missed. Arizona and Silver Bird were the two big hit singles from these two releases but the albums are full of great songs, both original and covers. Who would have thought that anyone could improve on Johnny Cash's dark reading of the Kristofferson masterpiece Sunday Morning Comin Down? Mark's version is not as dark and dismal sounding as Johnny's and it works. Mark's voice is much more palatable on the song as well.
It is well known that Mark Lindsay was the creative genius in Paul Revere and The Raiders. On the later Raider albums (my favorites), it was Mark who Produced and arranged those albums as well as writing the lions share of their original material.
On his solo albums Mark headed in a middle of the road / easy listening direction. Something that I never really understood. I always thought he should have gone in the singer-songwriter/rock direction. Like James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Elton John etc. Mark's vocals and songwriting skills were on par with the greats of that early 70s era.
Still the solo albums are great, especially if you are a fan of the Raiders. This stuff is softer, but you can't mistake the voice featured in Raider classics like Kicks, Hungy, Steppin Out, Good Thing, Don't Take It So Hard, Mr. Sun Mr. Moon etc.
It is nice to have the Arizona and Silver Bird albums on CD. I have a question for Columbia Records and Collectibles for that matter. When are we going to get Mark Lindsay's third solo album, You've Got A Friend on CD, or the classic Raiders albums Indian Reservation and Country Wine??? These are long overdue!
It would also be nice to get some bonus tracks inlcuded.

Double Good.......2006-07-23

The first two of Mark Lindsay's solo work are so good that it's a little surprising that these two albums did not sell more than they did. What good fortune to work with producer Jerry Fuller and arranger/conductor Artie Butler on the majority of these songs. Just listen to the Fuller/Butler collaborations, "Feel the Warm"(which Billy Eckstine also covered) and "Bookends", pop gems in three minutes time. I especially admired Artie Butler's very different, more rhythmic arrangement for "We've Only Just Begun" and Neil Diamond's "And the Grass Won't Pay no Mind", which has a slightly different mix (more guitars) than the vinyl version. The slowed down Bacharach-David classic from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" is just sublime. To Collectables: Why no songwriting credits on the CD? Especially when the back booklet is almost a plain, white blank. An overflow of talent, nonetheless!!

A wonderful solo album.......2006-03-08

That was yesteryear during my teen age when I was a great fan of Mark Lindsay, whom I not only loves his youthful appearance, but to the extent of his wonderful solo hits in this particular album, the only rare hit that is missing is a song called 'Something's big' But then I should be quite contended with this recent released album.

A Great Solo Effort By Mark Lindsay !.......2005-10-04

In 1970-71; Mark Lindsay worked some solo magic while he was still with the band, Paul Revere And The Raiders, and had us all listening and singing to the Top 10 Smash, Arizona, and his Top 30 followup, Silverbird, and both are on this CD. Three others on this Disc are the Ballads, Come Saturday Morning, We've Only Just Begun, and the George Harrison Penned, Something. His beautiful Medley of the Lennon / McCartney Penned, The Long And Winding Road / Yesterday, is another highlight to this wonderful Disc. Mark blends those two songs in perfectly with his voice....Outstanding !
Besides the popular, Arizona, and, Silverbird, there are also two more Radio Friendly songs here that several of you will remember and I think both were severely underrated and should have done much better on the charts than they did and they are, And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind, and, Miss America. This is what I think about those two.......... Marks voice is stunning on the beautiful Neil Diamond Penned, And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind, and that song only reached the Top 50. Mark also gives another stellar vocal performance on, Miss America, and that one also only made the Top 50 and that song is so beautiful it is breathtaking. Turn the volume up and listen in awe ! The Top 50 nor does this review do justice to how beautiful those two Ballads are. That's the great thing about owning this CD though because you can listen to these four classics plus the other seventeen any time you want too. Several of Mark's tunes on this compilation are toned down and very mellow but I believe his talent is still as remarkable as it was with The Raiders. You and I both know that these twenty one songs are Oldies.....but they are definitely Goodies!.....Highly Recommended !
Final Note: It has been thirty six years ( 1969 ) since I seen Mark And The Raiders in Concert ! What a night ! It was great !

I haven't heard my teenage crush since I was a child but, he was just as sultry as I remembered and I wasn't at all disappointed in the album it was spectacular.

Jimmy McIntosh's `Orleans to London' assembles some of the best players on the planet, not that Jimmy is a slouch guitarist by any stretch, but for this debut recording McIntosh employs the services of three Nevilles- Art, Cyril & Ivan, and from the London side- Ron Wood & Jeff Beck who because of record contract issues Beck goes by the name of `Hot Rod.' There are eleven tunes included, seven originals by McIntosh, ten are instrumentals, and one vocal track by Ivan where the music was written by McIntosh and lyrics by none other than Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller fame. The other covers are Hendrix' "Third Stone From the Sun," Jagger & Richards "Slave," and the traditional "This Minstral Boy" arranged by McIntosh.

`Biker Babe' sets the tone and vibe of this very fine recording with some very tasty guitar licks from Jimmy, with Ivan Neville on organ, Cyril Neville on percussion, and a very talented bassist Rochon Westmoreland (who I am not familiar with) who plays on ten of the eleven tracks.

"It Was A Virus" is a cool R&B tune, with great lyrics, which shows off the well-known talented vocal work of Ivan Neville who also plays organ, and `Mean' Willie Green (also from the Neville Brothers) on drums, plus the three stellar guitars of McIntosh, Ron Wood & Jeff Beck. McIntosh told me that; "I played the first solo, then Jeff Beck enters on the right channel playing off of Ivan's vocal, Ronnie Wood starts playing on the left channel during the long vamp, and at the end with Beck on the right side. Beck sometimes sounds like he's playing with a slide but it was all with whammy bar." Sweet!



Other stand out tunes include: `Mama Funk' with Ronnie Wood on guitar, and Art Neville on organ. `G-Spot' is not what you think it is, as the `G' stands for the key the song is played in, `G-Spot' features Beck, Wood, McIntosh, and Ivan, and its one of my many favorite tracks included. The ultra heavy Stones song `Slave,' will definitely get you in a Jagger/Richards mood, as Wood, McIntosh, and Ivan really lay down the groove on this red hot cover. The closing "The Minstral Boy," is an old Irish folk tune that Jimmy performed at his father's memorial service in November of 2001. "It's a couple hundred years old and was played at Winston Churchill's funeral," he explains. "I worked up that arrangement and it came out nice. My brother had always wanted me to record a copy for him to have, so I put this on here as a kind of surprise for him."

Everything about this disk is focused, it's very well recorded, extremely well produced, and `Orleans to London' will definitely be on my Top 10 favorites for 2007. This is a highly recommended CD, feel very comfortable to purchase this disk at: http://www.JimmyMcIntosh.

Surreal, intriguing, excellent music and recording.......2004-12-27

listening to the music is like enjoying the beautiful surreal movie once again without seeing it. The more I listen, the more I love it - it's the Amercian Dream story, it's the Iggy Pop music, it's the Johnny Depp narrative make it a valuable collectible CD. This is a new version, the recording is excellent.

Masterpiece.......2003-09-02

This is the album that sounds even better without the Movie.
Goran Bregovic mixed traditional european Folk music with more modern styled instrumental and rock music.with this mix and his talent to make a moving and touching songs he created a masterpiece,delightfull voyage to teh darkest and most mysterious places...Goran added sytnhs,bass,delicate guitar (simmilar a bit to mike Oldfield),and a massive wall of drums...Check out "Dreams","Old home movie","Gunpowder","Dreams" and a huge hit "Tv screen" with Iggy pop on vocals.Definitly one of my Desert-island albums,a must have for all instrumental music fans and for everyone as well!!!!

Versatile Composer.......2003-06-30

As most fans of Bregovic know, he is a versatile composer who blends well contemporary music technology with traditional flavors of eastern European gypsy and still manages to remain above the par of the usual techno-studio corporate music that attempts to stamp the "World Music" label on its own concoctions. "Arizona Dream" doesn't disappoint even the hard to please of Bregovic fans.

'Scuse me, 'scuse me........2005-02-28

Comedians come and go with no real impact or lasting effect on the audience. This is not the case with Bill Hicks. Hicks' style is such that what he says will stick with you, whether it disturbed you, made you laugh, or had some other effect, you will remember Bill Hicks once you've heard him.

What makes Arizona Bay so great is the manner in which it is carried out. The type of speech that Bill uses for different types of people is hilarious. Even though they are not necessarily accurate, it fits perfectly with how he is attemping to convey them. This is best portrayed in 'Hooligans.' That part in the show may very well be the highlight, even if it is at the beginning of the album.

The piece on the Rodney King trial is classic work as well. His views on the testimonies is some of the funniest commentary I've ever heard.

Anything and everything you'd want to know about Bill Hicks can be found on this record. Arizona Bay gives a great idea at his personal comedic style, as well as his personality. I highly recommend this to any fan of comedy.

The pinnacle of Bill Hicks' career........2005-02-27

All right, let me start off by saying: if you are not an avid Bill Hicks aficionado, Arizona Bay would be the best recording of his work for you start out with. It has all of his well-known satire compressed into one show. You can get the perfect indication of what kind of man Bill Hicks was, and how he thought.

His idea of serenity (being California floating into the Pacific Ocean after what's known as the "big one" detaches the state in its entirety) not only fills you with hilarity, but given his way of thinking, you can't help but feel a similar anticipation for the occurrence.
Personally, what I enjoyed most from this show were his bitter witticisms (i.e. his hatred for George Bush, Sr. - hell, republicans in general, and the Rodney King trial). His impressions of the characters he had involved makes it a special delight to hear, and far more amusing, predominiantly his British accent.

I apologize for this short review, but there's really nothing more to say. If you're already a Bill Hicks fanatic, I don't have to explain to you his comedic excellence, but if you're still new to his work, then please, take the time to digest it properly, and if your sense of wit is anything like mine, you'll enjoy what you hear.

It won't have you rolling in the aisles, but..........2004-11-29

It will make you think. I was introduced to the late Bill Hicks through Tool, of which I am a big fan. Some Tool fans see the man as a genius or feel obligated to like him by association. They're missing the whole point, namely that they both stand for free thought and don't care if you like them or not. On to my personal feelings about this album.
I heard some of Bill Hicks' material before, and I felt I should purchase the Arizona Bay album which was referenced by Tool. AEnima changed my life in a way I can't really describe. I'm glad I was not expecting this CD to do the same, or I would have been greatly disappointed. As far as comedy goes, Bill Hicks is not a disappointment. He raises points relevant to the time of the album's release. Stil, it contains glaring errors. The music is persistent, and it does not really help create a mood. It simply drowns the comedy. His humor is also somewhat repetitive and contains a lot of filler. The brutal honesty is the funniest of all. The best examples are Clam Lappers and Sonic the Hedgehog, Goodbye You Lizard Scum, and Hooligans. It is undue credit to call the man a genius, since his historical facts have glaring errors as well. Sometimes he lapses into rants about his hatred of the right, and while justifiable, they are not terribly funny.

It's all Bill Hicks........2004-02-13

Bill Hicks performs the vocals and guitar on this cd, and I think it's beautiful music. Not only was he a brilliant comedian, but also a very insightful musician, as the scores show. I don't find that the music detracts at all from the humor. It shows another side of Hicks, and I love it. He is such an inspiration. Play the cd and keep in mind that he is performing all the background music, you'll discover a different kind of appreciation for the work.

This is currently my only Bill Hicks album. My brother in law gave it to me. I guess he figured since I'm a pretty young and angry lad, that I'd probably be interested in it. I gave it a listen one night while I was cleaning up the house, and boy was I in for a treat! I pretty much fell in love with it immediately. Now, I haven't heard any of his other albums yet, but because of this one, I do have full intention on picking them up as well. Bill Hicks knew how to put energy and heart into his performances. He has a stance with every issue and he stupendously holds his ground for the most part. I must forewarn you, however, that this is not for everyone. Some of this leans way past the vulgar side of things, but that's what comedy is all about. Now, I will also warn you that this is not just a spoken comedy album. They incorporated music inbetween the tracks, so you get about of minute or so of music after every spoken bit. The music is okay. It's mostly just laid back guitar and drums, and sometimes there's some humming. Most of the time I skip through it. It was just something he was experimenting with. It's not that much of a nuisance in my opinion, just hit the 'next track' button and you'll be on the spoken bit. To sum this all up, Bill Hicks was a genius. He was considered "over the top" by most, and went out of his way to shatter the rules. His philosophies were set forth as aid for the free thinkers of the world. He was a great, and energetic speaker, and any fan of intelligent comedy should definately be familiar with Hicks and his material. Highly Recommended!

I have been a fan of Rex Allen for years. I purchased the CD because it had Yodelin' Crazy which I didn't have on any other CDs. This CD also has some yodeling in other songs as well. I like it but no one does it anymore. His wife, Bonnie sings on several songs, she has a pleasant voice and their duets were enjoyable.

A quarter century ago, the members of Asleep at the Wheel were young Western swing enthusiasts trying their best to imitate such heroes as Bob Wills and Milton Brown. Now Ray Benson and his dozens of bandmates--past and present--are the seasoned heroes of the genre, and a new generation of young Western swing fans look to Asleep at the Wheel for clues. Two of those youngsters, Nashville stars Tracy Byrd and Wade Hayes, pay their respects in the form of guest vocals on the new Asleep at the Wheel album, Back to the Future Now. This live album isn't the best record the group has ever made, but it may be the best single-disc introduction. Not only do Byrd and Hayes provide a way into the music for younger fans, but most of the band's best-known songs plus three Wills tunes are reprised. More importantly, several key members of Asleep at the Wheel's legendary 1975-'78 lineup return to the fold for a one-night, school-of-swing reunion. Vocalists LeRoy Preston and Chris O'Connell once again sing their signature numbers, "My Baby Thinks She's a Train" and "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read" respectively. Founding steel guitarist Lucky Oceans trades slippery licks with current steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar on Wills'S "Fat Boy Rag," and pianist Floyd Domino comes back to rattle the ivories on Moon Mullican's "Cherokee Boogie." Tony Garnier (heard more recently with Bob Dylan) slaps out a walking bass line on Wills'S "Roly Poly." Playing hundreds of gigs a year, Asleep at the Wheel performs an outstanding live show. This recording captures a very special evening. The band is at times joined by Asleep at the Wheel alumni and special guests. Ray Benson's heartfelt charm and humor is in full gear. The setlist includes perennial favorites ('Miles and Miles of Texas') and some seldom played treats ('Fat Boy Rag'). The band's studio version of 'Hot Rod Lincoln' lacks the energy and extended rockabilly improvisation of the live renditions. This is the only album that captures the rockin' humor of the song as played live. The McGuire Sisters helped the band to play their definitive version of 'House of Blue Lights;' it swings unusually hard. The mood is light, the energy is high and the sound quality is excellent. While Asleep at the Wheel has other live albums, "Back to the Future" captured a historic moment by a good incarnation of the group. If you dig Asleep at the Wheel, you will adore "Back To The Future Now: Live At Arizona Charlie's." At the time of review, about ten copies could be purchased for fewer than five bucks through Amazon's Marketplace Sellers. Go back to the future already and listen to this disc!

I was there, and boy is this fun.......2003-10-21

I have been following Asleep at the Wheel since around 1976 when I first saw them. I can't think of a bad Asleep at the Wheel Album,but this is one of my favorites. Maybe it was because I WAS THERE at Arizona Charlies for this show. It was grade AAAAAAAA.

This was a reunion show where old band members of the original group came and played with the band Ray had at the time. I think the music blossoms here. I haven't purchased any of the other live albums yet, but I think this one shares with the cuts I have heard on other live albums, a kind of electricity that isn't on the studio albums. Ray Benson and the gang know how to electrify an audience, and spread the spirit of fun, and discovery like on one of the tunes not on the album where they morphed from from straight western swing into a Thelonius Monk tune. Moreover this music is made for drinking and dancing and romancing. That was what we were doing at Arizona Charlie's that night!

Party Time With AATW.......1999-11-02

If you can't see Asleep At The Wheel perform LIVE, this is the next best thing. When I first bought this cd I must've played it at least 8 times in a row & I've turned a few friends onto it. If I had to choose 10 cd's to bring on a desert island, at least 5 would be by AATW.

Asleep At The Wheel are probably the BEST of the current western swing bands and have been around for well over 20 years. They get better with time and I always look forward to their latest works. This cd has them performing live at Arizona Charlie's in Las Vegas and past and present band members joined together for a grand time along with special guests like Tracy Byrd & even the McGuire Sisters. I hope they perform in the metropolitan area soon so I can finally see them LIVE. This album is a real treat!

The story goes that composer Carter Burwell owes his fortuitous, ongoing collaboration with the filmmaking's Brothers Coen to one crucial requirement: he worked cheap. But the Coens' low-budget film noir debut, Blood Simple (which also launched the career of cinematographer-turned-director Barry Sonnenfeld), certainly got the best of the bargain, a wonderfully less-is-more score highlighted by a compelling solo piano theme. Get the original recordings........2005-04-21

This CD is not bad at all for the music that Carter composed.
He borrowed quite a bit from other sources and you can find them
right here on Amazon. The banjo music and yodel is by Pete Seeger
from the CD "Darling Corey And Goofing-Off Suite". The wonderful
Monkey Chant is the Balinese Ramayana Monkey Chant and can be found
on the CD "Bali: Golden Rain" in its original 22 minute version.

Missing the only reason I bought the soundtrack..........2005-02-19

I bought this soundtrack for the great Raising Arizona music that I heard while watching the DVD--the best part is the end credits with banjo etc. and a variation on "Ode to Joy". IT IS NOT THERE. Only one or two tracks I find enjoyable on the CD for a grand total of about 2 minutes.

Missing banjo playing from Raising Arizona........2005-01-21

The Raising Arizona part of the CD is almost exclusively electronic and only one 90 second track of the great banjo that I remember from the movie. I recommend listening to samples before you buy.

Not at all what I expected.......2001-07-23

Junque music. Sorry I bought it. There are two songs off of the Raising Arizona tracks that I do like, however... I'm really not happy with this one at all. Maybe I can go up to a pawn shop and trade it for something listenable. Sorry Carter.

Arizona Cowboy at his BEST!.......2007-06-08

If you love the old singin' Cowboys, then you can't afford not to have Rex Allen in your music collection along with your Roy and Gene. I first knew of Rex Allen mostly from his narration of the Walt Disney nature films and had the honor of meeting him at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. It was years later after VHS and DVD's were available that I got to see him as a Singing Arizona Cowboy. This album is a MUST HAVE! Highest recommendation.
