5 out of 5 stars An escape to the ocean............2004-12-11

For some reason, this cd makes me think of the ocean and I love the ocean. I love listening to it when I am in the car where I can stay calm and peaceful during the ride. I used this cd a lot when I am having a bad day and just need to escape reality for a while to help feel better. This has been one of my favorite cds that I go back to often and always bring it with me wherever I go. I would recommend this cd for relaxing and let yourself go from the cares of the world into your own world.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-03-13

One of three CDs in Real Music's Sacred Spa Music Series, "Quiet Days" is my favorite of the group. A compilation of the most soothing and relaxing pieces from previously released albums, this collection consists of tracks from 2002 (2 tracks), Kevin Kern (2), Hilary Stagg (3), Michael Hoppe (2), Tim Wheater, Paul Machlis, and Bernard L'Hoir. While calming and quiet, most of the pieces have enough sparkle to keep the album very interesting in the foreground as well as creating a lovely backdrop for other activities or simply unwinding. Piano, harp, flute, and keyboards make up most of the instrumentation. All of the selections are gorgeous, and some are haunting in their beauty. As a collection, this CD has a somewhat melancholy mood that is also comforting as well as soothing and reassuring. I love this album, and highly recommend it!

Product Description

The mighty dreadnoughts and battle cruisers of Kaiser Wilhelm II's navy sail again in this magnificent, first-ever compilation from Brandenburg Historica! This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD presents the marches and songs of the golden age of German sea power, with PERIOD performances by illustrious units of the Imperial German Navy and leading military- and civilian ensembles of the German Empire. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" features not only the most famous parade- and presentation marches from the core repertoire of the Kaiser s "High Seas Fleet", but also many forgotten treasures of nautically flavored German martial- and patriotic music. Included here are period pieces celebrating the First World War-era exploits of the SMS Emden, Otto Weddigen s U-9 and the raider SMS Moewe; a 1907 recording of the "Flag Parade" of the Imperial German Navy (complete with drill commands and including the "Hollaendischer Ehrenmarsch", which was designated as the presentation march for all naval units by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1901); and a super-rare 1915 version of Hermann Loens battle song, "Wir fahren gegen Engelland", set to a score that has been completely overshadowed by Herms Niel's famous setting of that song from 1940. In addition to these rarities, the album features numerous German naval marches and concert band pieces of the Imperial era that are endowed with a distinctive maritime ambience, but are virtually unknown to today's listeners The performances assembled in this compilation were originally recorded between 1907 and 1917, and though the extremely rare early discs from which they have been transcribed date from the acoustic age of recording (that is, before the invention of electric microphones and pick-ups), they have been laboriously restored and reengineered to maximize the considerable fidelity already inherent to them without altering their historical authenticity in any way whatsoever. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" is accompanied by a TWENTY-FOUR PAGE BOOKLET (lavishly illustrated with many rare, never-before published photographs) which features detailed historical notes on the development of the Imperial German Navy during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, its musical traditions and the background of the featured musical selections.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Release.......2007-07-12

Brandenburg Historica deserves much credit for releasing this and other historical CDs. The music sounds great and the booklet is very well-done and informative. Anyone with an interest in military music should certainly get this. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable trip into history.......2007-07-03

This is a very creditable work that preserves music of a bygone era. Original recordings are used to give an exact reproduction of the sounds of military music of the Kaiser's navy. Particularly interesting was the track where the U-9 march went off into a verbal reenactment of the U-boat attack.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn' t come any better than this.......2007-06-26

The folks at Brandenburg Historica have done it again with Hoch Deutschlands Flotte. Twenty five (25) exceptionally re-mastered original 78 rmp recordings of navy marches, songs and other music, many by naval and seebattalion(marines)bands of the Kaiser's Navy. As with Brandenburg Historica's prior albums, the 19 pages of album notes and photographs are outstanding and second to none I have seen. It's a class act and does not get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Hoch Deutschlands Flotte, a musical journey in to the past .......2007-06-17

I just finished listening to this CD and it is a real gem. A rare look back at what the German navy was like in the Glory days of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany. Any one that is a Military Music enthustiast and/or interested in the history of this time period should not pass up this treasure. All the selections on this CD are first rate.

4 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Companion.......2007-01-19

I originally bought this item because I love the song "Mary Did You Know?" Natalie Cole's voice only made it that much more enjoyable. The best surprise on the CD was a duet with her father. I really love the sound of their two voices together.

5 out of 5 stars A Natalie Cole Christmas.......2006-11-06

I enjoyed Ms. Cole's CD. I have always listened to her father's CD during the holidays and now I can listen to hers too. It was quite enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Classy performance from a Classy woman.......2005-12-02

Natalie Cole is a beautiful person and I've long admired her musical work. This Christmas album is no exception. Her silky but strong voice really serves her and us well in songs like "My Grown-Up Christmas List", "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", and "The Christmas Song" which she, thanks to modern technology, sings with her father Nat King Cole. While I don't usually don't care for the jazzed up or modernized versions of traditional Christmas songs I have to admit that Natalie really turned out a nice piece of work with her upbeat version of "Sleigh Ride".

The London Symphony Orchestra really compliments Natalie's voice. Songs like "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Christmas Waltz" are two songs in which the Symphony stands out.

Lastly, Natalie Cole has selected songs that focus on the actual Christmas story and or on the spirit of good well that are part of the birth of Christ. She hasn't tried to reinvent any of these songs or alter the arrangement to the point that they are no longer recognizable. She has used her talent to provide listeners with beautiful vocalizations of these Christmas songs and the London Symphony Orchestra for the beautiful arrangements, music and background vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Natalie may not be Nat , but she is certainly VERY GOOD!.......1999-12-11

This album is softer, more mellow then her best-selling "Holly and Ivy." With the strong support of the London Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Cole shows several facets of herself as a singer. Natalie can be attacked, for lacking the edge, the individuality that any singer (ecspecially a "Jazz Singer") needs to set themselves apart from the others. Yet one can not deny that Ms. Cole has a very strong musical ear, a solid voice, and a warmth that is all her own! Yet Ms. Cole is not a "Jazz Singer," she would be best described as a "Pop/Jazz Singer." The Magic of Christmas is certainly a Pop/Jazz album. Her voice is soft like silk, and yet earthy-strong and soaring! She is gifted. Natalie not only listened to music as a child, she absorbed the music of her father, Louie, Ella, Aretha, etc.. into the fabric of who she is. Would I like Natalie to be more authentic, less pleasing and sweet, less perfect, a "JAZZ SINGER." Well, sure! I am a huge jazz vocal fan. Yet is that who she is? Can she sing a song like Sarah or Carmen? Perhaps not. Perhaps as she gets older, and is truly satisfied with her POPular success she will do less "MOR" music..perhaps not. All I know is, her holiday album is filled with great singing, excellent musicians and arrangers. It is a mellow Natalie, bringing in the holdiays with such class that even Nat himself would be proud of. The critic above is correct, Natalie has added yet another piece to the greatness of the Cole legacy. A legacy that both father and daughter share. Lets remember...Natalie has survived in the industry since the year of my bith-1975. That is close to 25 years folks, I am sorry, but her father didn't make that happen. Natalie a great many of her supporters made that happen.

5 out of 5 stars Magical.......1999-12-07

Once again, Ms. Cole displays class and sophistication on her new Christmas album. Nobody can do to a song what this lady does. I have said it before and I will say it again. Natalie is in a class all by herself. Her voice is so clear, so sweet, so strong. What else is there to say. A great voice with great musicians, how can you go wrong.

1994. What a year that was. I remember vividly hearing this cd come raging like a storm onto the club PA system on a cold, rainy, Autumn night. I had to ask the DJ who on earth this was. Reverent vocal strains of hints of Peter Murphy with a guitar sound like no other, raining down from the heavens to bathe us in it's all encompassing glow. I begged the DJ to play more of this cd that night and went home convinced this was a revelation in sound.

I occasionally put this cd on when I want a glimpse of what the indie scene used to be and when bands really knew how to play their instruments with their hearts and captured you, forever, with their minds...

4 out of 5 stars Summer Darling: I Know You ~ I Never Knew You (Independent, N/A).......2006-01-07

Brent Heywood, Heather Bray and D. Rossiter hail from the Inland Empire in sunny California. Although most people would equate the Beach Boys and happy sorts of pop music with this scene, Heywood and Bray seem to bend that stereotype and dig a little deeper. Heywood's lyrics are a major force on this disc. They are conflicted, beautiful, poignant, and troubling. His choice to express openness, both in respect to sadness and religion, is beautiful. On top of this, Frank Lenz lends a hand by mixing, recording and playing on the album. If that is not enough, Richard Swift makes an appearance playing keys on "Queen of Pasadena."

"You Always Sleep with Your First Love" opens I Know You ~ I Never Knew You with an alt-country feel and some sprinkles of Rhodes organ. It is a quiet and romantic piece with a touch of Frank Lenz style to it. The lyrics are open and subtly melancholy. Ben Heywood and Heather Bray play off of each other throughout the song. They croon:

          Drink yourself to death
It's the only way to test
          I have this theory
That no one goes quietly into the night
Hold me here whilst I sleep
The blood on my hands runs so deep
          I have this theory
That people give up without much fight
          You are my special one
You always sleep with your first love

It is clear from the very start of the album that Heywood is able to write fantastic lyrics. He paints imagery that is sorrowful and open. "The Painter" is a slow tempo rock song with shimmering guitar and a conversation between Heywood and Bray. It tells a story of lovers dealing with their past baggage and not wanting to let go of one another. The piano in this song is perfect and poignant. "Dressed Up for Funerals" is a beautifully stirring song. It is slow paced with sprinkles of piano and complimentary guitar. It is apparent from the very beginning of this album that Heywood is a profound lyricist who can take cliché topics and turn them into something beautiful and moving. Heywood croons "its not a sin if no one has to know / If you've got the thirst, then drink from me / If your heart is sick, then let it bleed / Hallelujah." "Year of Guilt" is a straightforward rock song with Heywood's innocent sounding vocals. This song shows the deeply conflicted religious dimensions of this album. Honestly, I don't want to impose any interpretation on the content of the song, but I think the listener does get a real sense of confusion and frustration from it. "Guilt" is certainly a brutally open song.

"Queen of Pasadena" begins with light synth and accompanying bass. It is a beautifully catchy song with strings sprinkled in with piano and shakers. Also, a treat for listeners on this song is that Richard Swift plays keys. "Gloria" begins with strong percussion and some sprinkles of guitar. It is another religiously conflicted song. What is really cool about this song is that there are Frank Lenz style BGV's. Again, I feel the need to type out the lyrics. They are beautiful.

          Jesus on Hollywood
I lost my faith to make him stay put
In temples built on saints ashes
          And praises sung by drunks
          Gloria
          Wedding bells above my head
I married rich to keep my stomach fed
          Lets buy it now
          Soon we might be dead
To the praises sung by drunks
The church is filled with paupers
While the streets are lined with kings
Did I really give all that I could?
While holding back all my precious things
          Praise his birth

This is Summer Darling's longest track on the disc and it is worth every second it is played. It is powerful, both lyrically and musically. The end of the song extends into an instrumental type piece that has beautiful piano, synth, strings, sprinkles of guitar, percussion, and many, many touches that feel like Frank Lenz's doing.

"Set Yourself Aflame" begins with a groovy, slightly distorted beat. This song really reminds me of some songs from Death Cab for Cutie or the Postal Service. The guitar work is similar and Heywood's vocals definitely have that boyish feel to them. I don't mean to make that sound like a direct copy of style. I really dig this song. It is well placed on the disc following the extended "Gloria." The strong, driving guitar really brings this song out, especially with the controlled feedback here and there. "Summer Scars" definitely has a classic rock feel to it. It is a strait forward rock song with just the right attitude in the music. There are fuzzy guitars and tambourine in the mix.

"Little Armenia" is a slow ballad with acoustic guitar, sprinkles of piano, fuzz, Lenz BVG's, and fantastic percussion. Again, this song is about love but also has that religious conflict that seems to be a theme throughout the album. "Math is Everywhere" begins with Heywood singing "you came out screaming bloody murder / nothing was so beautiful / Living never seemed so desperate / Growing old so impossible." It is a sad song about things just not adding up in life and dealing with difficulties as they come along. I suppose there could be more than one meaning to the song, but suicide seems to be a central theme. The tune is mid-tempo and the percussion build really accents the desperate nature of the lyrics. Heywood ends the song screaming in desperation "so are you!" It is a perfectly poignant ending to a melancholy album.

Summer Darling's "I Know You ~ I Never Knew You" is a strong first album with great musicianship and fantastic lyrics. It's an album that will move you.
