5 out of 5 stars Music of True Joy.......2007-02-08

I was surprised to find only two reviews of this album. That the album is apparently out of print is a great shame. The album is well worth the premium prices being charged for it on the secondary market. Listening to this music over the years has always brought to my heart great surges of joy. Everyone I've given this album to has felt the same. As one friend told me, "The party was a drag, but then I put on Paris to Soweto, and the party took off." This is the music I have requested be played as people file out of my memorial service. It is truly uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars This is a terrifically danceable classic of african music........1999-07-12

A classic at our house, I recommend it for anyone who wants to have something guaranteed to cheer people up.

5 out of 5 stars The best work of both, a must buy.......1999-05-26

This is upbeat music, with African and Reggae flavors. Hear the best of the Mahotella Queens harmonies and Mahatlani's lead vocals ever recorded. If you only buy one album that features either of these artists, this is it. It is a must have for any world music collector.

This instantly winning disc, sung in Zulu mostly, is as accessible as Johnny Clegg's work with Juluka. A brief English rap on the title track explains the band's 28-year history. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Mighty roar.......2004-04-22

This brilliant album by one of South Africa's top bands of the 70s and 80s is one huge listening feast. It opens with the hit title track, which is a celebration of this style of music that is also called township pop and is built on pulsating rhythms with exuberant vocals in Zulu. The magic lies in the vocals, with Mahlatini (the Lion of Soweto) roaring in his gravely voice against the uplifting voices of the queens. Jive Motella is another of my favourites with its lilting beat. I also love Josefa, Noluthando and the ode to the township of KwaMakhutha. But all the tracks have something to offer. Together with Thokozile, this is the best album by Mahlatini and the Queens, one that ought to appeal beyond the boundaries of the World Music category. Simon Mahlatini passed away some years ago but his music lives on and this album, the aforementioned Thokozile and the Best Of collection are the places to start investigating these talents that shone so brightly beneath the southern cross.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars South African musical royalty.......2004-04-21

Simon Mahlatini and the Mahotella Queens started making music in the 1960s and in the next decade they became one of South Africa's most popular groups. The Queens recorded on their own and with Mahlatini whose gravely voice serves as the perfect counterpoint to their exuberant vocal harmonies. This style of music is called Mbaqanga, a rhythmic dance-friendly style of pop. They sing about the style on the catchy track with that title which is one of my favorites. Other great hits include Malaika, the lilting Jive Motella with its rousing vocals, Rastaman with its reggae influence, Thina Siyakhanyisa, Josefa and Dilika Town Hall. There is plenty of variety within their township pop style. With their huge recorded output, this Best Of compilation only scratches the surface but it does contain a number of their greatest evergreen hits. The tunes are catchy, the harmonies exquisite and the interplay between Mahlatini's deep voice and the Queens' high register makes for marvelous dramatic tension. This music is guaranteed to make you happy! I also recommend their albums Thokozile and Mbaqanga, both classic works that are packed with great songs.

5 out of 5 stars Uniting Women Earth Wide..........2000-12-25

This music is a celebration of womenhood. It transcends any cultural barriers that we may place around one another. Reminding women that we are all one.The pains and pleasures of our love have no racial or ethnic fences. It reminds all of us that our emotions are the fiber that unite our lives. The amazing range that these beautiful queens can voice will send your heart to a happy place. The song themes are as contemporary now as they were when this was recorded. This is a classic of African music, and these singers can be compared to the divas from the United States such as Aretha Franklin,or Diana Ross. Definitely a good pick for anyone who is down to earth and can appreciate goodness and beauty.

      5 out of 5 stars Antidepressant.......2006-10-09

I've had this album since I heard the group at the Frog Island Festival in Ypsilanti, MI. It's fabulous and timeless. I've worn out my tape and bought the CD today.

The harmonies are breathtaking. The beat is compellingly dance-able. Fascinating accents. We know music effects mood. This album bestows an infectious sense of "All is well with the world, never mind whatever you're going through, come dance!" (which is amazing considering that Apartheid seemed an insurmountable evil during the height of this group's popularity in South Africa). My children even think this album is cool.

It's a jewel in my music collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Queens in English, not bad at all.......2003-05-16

Fans of great South African music need no introduction to the Mahotella Queens. Simply put thier music is uplifting in any language. Here, instead of their usual Zulu tunes, they take a stab at the English language market. With their ever-present partner Malanthini the groaner (RIP), they do an English version of their hit "Kazet" entiled "Won't You Sing Along." The real masterpiece here are the final tunes "Pray the Good Lord/God Is On Our Side" (they kind of blend into each other for good effect). Very uplifting, no matter what you believe. Only minor drawback is that it is clear that they are not accustomed to singing in English and the lyrics come off as a trifle stilted in some places, but overall it's a good effort and a fine intro for novices of S/A music.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Mbaqanga Jive.......2005-09-08

Before I give you a review of this wonderful recording, a little history: Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens were formed in 1963 at Gallo Studios; Mahlathini was the King of the Groaners, the Queens studio singers at Gallo for many popular artists (leader of the Queens, Hilda Tloubatla, also recorded tracks for the S.A.B.C. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) in the 1950's. After just eight years together with the backing band, the one and only Makgona Tsohle Band, the group split and a group of four understudies starting recording with fellow group Abafana Baseqhudeni under the Mahotella name - they produced one album, "Izibani Zomgqashiyo" of 1977 but Mbaqanga fans refused to buy the product. The original Queens, Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Shawe, Mildred Mangxola, Joyce Makhanya, Paulina Zulu and Thoko Nontsontwa (only the first four are shown on the album cover) rejoined Mahlathini and this album was the result.

"Marriage Is A Problem", sung in Sotho rather than Zulu, is a marvellous piece of work, with such classic tunes included; "Kgarebe Tsaga Mothusi", later recorded as "Thuntswane Basadi", features Mahlathini doing what he does best - growling! - whilst the last track "Nyalo Ea Tshwenya" features the Queens performing alone. The lyrics say "Marriage is a big problem, we thought we couldn't return but we have... we are touring all over the place, promoting our music."

As a bonus, the track "Mantshi" is a non-vocal track by the Makgona Tsohle Band, with a wonderful accordian lead, with the late Marks Mankwane, Joseph Makwela and Vivien Ngubane providing excellent guitar rhythm. A great "jive-tastic" album featuring THE professionals in Mbaqanga music.
