Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Debbie Friedman is always good.......2002-12-27

Debbie Friedman is always good, and this Shabbat album is no exception. It is not my favorite of her albums, which causes me to subtract one star from this review. But she is a gifted composer, her voice is clear, her Hebrew is good, and I love that several of her albums have clear themes, like this one does (Shabbat music). The liner notes are also worth reading.

Very Moving.......2000-11-29

This is a collection of Debbie Friedman's which is now over a decade old (originally released in 1989) and most of the songs on this CD are available on others. As is the case with many of her collections, a featured song is Mi Shebeirach. This is a song that particularly appeals to those in need of healing, physical or spiritual, and it can bring a lump to the throat. Other tracks include prayers tastefully set to contemporay arrangements such as Mi Chamocha. This CD is strong evidence that folk, soft rock and other contemporary genres can be a powerful vehicle to spirituality. If you ever have a chance to see Debbie in person, her live rendition of Mi Shebeirach, with audience participation, is very powerful. However, this studio recorded version is also very moving. I recommend this CD highly as representaive of some of her best work.

Most incredible CD ever!.......2000-07-16

I first heard this CD while away at a jewish camp a few years ago, and I was only borrowing it from a friend. When it came time to return the CD I was devestated because I've never heard a CD quite like it. It is the most spiritual, engaging CD I've heard by Debbie Friedman. Buy it!

Modern, Creative Version of Ancient Prayers.......1999-01-09

This CD contained wonderful renditions of ancient Hebrew prayers, traditionally chanted on Sabbath Eve.
