Do you remember the great rendition of Milonga Triste from the movie The Tango Lesson? That was Hugo Diaz, and that piece is on the album "Hugo Diaz en Buenos Aires." That Hugo Diaz was a harmonica player, and the Hugo Diaz of Trio Hugo Diaz is a Uraguayan master bandoneonist. Harmonicas and bandoneons have a different sound. Don't buy this disk if you think the harmonica player Hugo Diaz produced it.

I like the instrumentation of the Trio Hugo Diaz. In a tango ensemble, there is a certain amount of improvisation and give-and-take between the bandoneón, the double bass, and the piano. The Hugo Diaz Trio does a good job in this regard. It reminds me of a jazz band in how they work together. If you consider tango to be a form of jazz, you already understand this concept. It works well when the band has a certain chemistry or "je ne sais quoi." You know it when you hear it, and you enjoy it.

This is the traditional tango music composed by Castillo, Gardel, Fresedo, Troilo, Martinez, Juan de Dios Filberto, etc. It has a unique sound. My first question: is it danceable? Yes, it is danceable. I feel that it is appropriate for salon tango, but probably not for fantasy tango dancers. The next question would be whether you could expect to hear it at an upcoming milonga. I think not. Although very popular in Europe, the Trio Hugo Diaz does not have a large following in the United States and Canada. Those people who are disc jockeys at milongas tend to prefer the tried and true old favorites. There may be a few of the arrangments in this disk may be considered by some to be a little too "jazzy" and non-traditional. I like it when people at milongas ask the DJ "Wow, that was great! What was it?" I like the variety.

If you only buy 1 Trio Pantango CD in your whole life ... then buy this one. This CD should be described as a "Greatest Hits" album as it draws tracks from all their past efforts. If you are a fan of the big orchestral sound, then this CD is not for you. If like me however, you prefer your Tango to be clear, simple, passionately interpreted and expertly played, then you will definitely enjoy this CD. Ever since I first heard Trio Pantango I was impressed by the crispness of the instruments and the fine delineation of sounds - I hope they will appeal to you in the same way.

Trio Pantango has been a sentimental favorite of mine. It is a small ensemble consisting of clarinet, guitar, and bass. They present an "intimate" sound and prove that you don't have to have a bandoneón in order to play tango music. It is a true international sound, and the group is made up of an Argentine and two Germans. I first heard this group at a tango ball in Montreal, and I liked them so much that own half of their discography. Trio Pantango's "El Ultimo Café" was one of the top 100 tango disks in Tango Montreal's 2000 survey of Argentine tango music. That recommendation motivated me to buy their other titles. I really liked "El Ultimo Café" and "El Garron," but I like "Libertango" much better.

The disk is a compilation of some of the great titles by the great tango writers of the 20th Century, including "Quejas de Bandoneón," "Che bandoneón," "La cumparsita," "Café 1930," "Jalousie," "Libertango," and many more. "Libertango" has always been a favorite Piazzola piece, and every time I hear it I visualize the scene from Sally Porter's movie "Tango Lesson." My impression is that this disk is a wonderful modern interpretation of some of the best 20th Century tango. I was not disappointed, and I recommend it not just to dancers but also to music lovers who appreciate the tango genre.

          Another in the similarly titled series by Hugo Diaz, and just as brilliant. What can I say about Diaz that hasn't been said before? El Choclo swings from slinky to raunchy and back again to jazzy. La Cachila is very different from the version on Classical Tango Argentino: it wraps itself sensuously round you and ends in a wild climax. Desde el Alma is more suave and less anguished than the version on Classical Tango Argentino Divina. Recuerdo and El dia que me quieras are soulful unaccompanied bandoneon.

          4 out of 5 stars Good solid music to bellydance to and an enjoyable listen.......2000-07-08

          Having danced for almost 17 years, I'd say that this is one fine CD to own. For those of us searching for a solid middle eastern sound, yet with some variety to increase our enjoyment of dance movement, we'll like it! Amazing to find more than one track that is danceable and enough difference in the tracks not to bore you or your audience senseless. I am looking forward to listening to some of Emad's other releases that I have ordered as well and will try to give my opinion there too. A new and pleasant change is having lyrics translated [and they do it in English, Spanish, French and German] as generally we in the dance community have no clue as to what they're singing about. Track 2 is as they say a flirtatious duet, though the laughter interspersed through the music could be a detraction for some and a delight for others. I haven't made my mind up about it yet. Track 11 has a VERY nice percussion selection. And, out of the 11 tracks total, I think that 75% have strong possibilities for choreography.
