Here's a disc of 19 familiar and unfamiliar Kurt Weill songs arranged for dance band and played by an expert group of specialists in Roaring Twenties band music. They're led by singer-conductor-composer H.K. Gruber, whose previous recordings include Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper. The result is a start-to-finish delight. From the first notes, you're beamed back in time to one of those sleek transatlantic passenger liners, sitting in an art deco ballroom watching elegant couples in tuxedos and ball-gowns swirl by while the band plays hits from Weill's German and Broadway triumphs. Sure, the venom is leached from the originals, but who needs agitprop when you're on a dance floor? The arrangements are by a variety of hands, hired by Weill's European and American publishers with his approval to get more mileage from his musical theater works. They're delightfully square rhythmically and formulaic in transferring Weill's music to conventional dance bands, but the music still holds up and is fun to hear in its new clothes. A special treat is the eight tracks with Max Raabe, whose light tenor and falsetto singing preserve the spirit of Weill's songs, as well as perfectly mimic the boy band singers of times gone by. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
SAIL ON, KURT!.......2006-04-23
Shoenberg and Webern expressed their disdain of Weill's music; curiously, Arnold had also disclosed a secret wish of having his own audiences walk back home "whistling his tunes", oh, don't ask why... You can certainly whistle, hum and sway your partner now, as the transatlantic's bouncy dancehall sails on just as Kurt, Lotte and the lot of them did when escaping the lethal hounds of early 30s Berlin.... the-next-little-dollar bound.
Not at All Vile Weill.......2001-08-13
ELEVATOR MUSIC.......2001-05-23
But Weill was an innovator: a man who can still be listened to experiencing the thrill of something fresh and new. One immediately thinks of his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht in Germany: "Threepenny Opera" and "The Rise & Fall Of The City of Mahagonny" or "The Seven Deadly Sins", etc. his American opera, "Street Scene" with Langston Hughes or his American musical plays: "One Touch of Venus" with Ogden Nash or "Love Life" with Alan Jay Lerner, etc. The songs on this CD all deserve great recordings from the "Alabama Song" to "September Song" but they turn into a kind of flattened elevator music instead of having fresh interpretations or even more traditional ones. What happens is that the longing in "What Good Would the Moon Be" and the romance of "Speak Low" and the raucousness of "Bilbao Song" are all much too similar and much too easy.
It's a little weird to think of husbands whispering to their wives," Listen, honey, they're playing 'As You Make Your Bed' from "Mahagonny".........let's fox trot!"

In A Word.......Superb.......2002-07-04
Robin & Judithe Randall are one of the most respected songwriting teams since lennon/McCartney, and rightly so.
This CD has it all...Great Songs, Great production, great Artists.
The Import price is most probably the only thing stopping you from buying it.....this is one of the best Investments you will ever make.
A Classic CD deserving its legendary status...and a perfect example of what a AOR/Melodic Rock Album should sound like.
Perfection....Doesn't get better than this!
MISSIN' YOU.......2001-01-09
Heir apparent to Heart's throne.......2000-07-28
Venus & Mars are in no way inferior to their illustrious rolemodels. Clocking in at nearly an hour, the 14 tracks on "New moon rising" rival the best of Heart's all-time classics. Apart from the top notch songwriting (prime contributors were Robin's mother Judithe Randall and one William Hanna), the impeccable musicianship and crystal clear production (for which a total of eight additional producers were responsible) make for one hell of an album. The booklet lists a seemingly endless lineup of guest musicians, who provide a solid rhythm section and tasty guitarwork to supplement and enhance Robin Randall's delectable keyboards and Diana DeWitt's intense vocals, which range from soothing to powerful. In sublime tracks such as "Dancing on the highwire", "Leave well enough alone" and "Making out like a bandit" Diana and Robin prove that they can rock with the best of them. But just as easily this terrific tandem can turn on the style and go for subtle and refined in gems like "Bless a brand new angel" and "Accident'ly on purpose". The CD also features a cover version of "The last time", a track off Mark Free's fantastic 1993 "Long way from love" album, for which at the time all songs were composed by Robin & Judithe Randall. (Like the familiar anthem "Someday you'll come running", which was included on the "Grand trine" album.) But to single out these songs would be selling the others short. Once again i'm glad to say that there are no tracks that fail to deliver.
In these Heartless times Venus & Mars have picked up the gauntlet in a most resolute and competent manner. This is melodic rock with a capital M ! Although you may be hesitant to risk the plunge considering the price of Japanese import CDs, you may be assured that this one is a great investment and worth every cent. It is one of the highlights in my collection, as it undoubtedly will be in yours.

The brilliant Brodsky Quartet is at it again, offering entertaining, virtuosic collaborations with stars of the pop music world with which both classical and popular music lovers will be equally entranced. Whether it's lolling strings underpinning Meredith Monk's enchanting, wordless syllables or assisting Jacqui Dankworth in a torch-like ballad (The Abyss) or nervous pizzicati to go along with a song by Sting, the ear is constantly being treated to a new surprise: if a quartet of strings and a voice can do it, they do it here. Errolyn Wallen and the Brodskys offer a languid ballad called "Daedalus," while Bjork puts her usual, original (if vaguely tiresome) stamp on "I've Seen It All." The CD opens and closes with songs sung by Elvis Costello whose unique, vibrato-filled voice remains remarkably expressive; the last number, "Real Emotional Girl," is a Randy Newman song in which the strings of the Brodskys feel and put across the singer's anguish in equal partnership. A one-of-a-kind CD. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Errollyn Wallen will break your heart and put it back together again........2006-05-01
Appropriate Title for Sharp Performances on a Bumpy Road.......2005-06-06
Sting's performance of his gypsy ballad, "Until...", sounds especially influenced by Kurt Weill, as does Björk's familiar dirge, "I've Seen It All", from her 2000 cinematic foray with Lars von Trier, "Dancer in the Dark". Jacqui Dankworth lends a languorous vocal to Kate Curtis' and Will South's "The Abyss" and the more funereal "Song" by Daniel Monk. And a nice surprise is the Gershwin-inspired "I Never Went Away" by Richard Rodney Bennett, though it does feel a bit out of place among the more experimental music. Truth be told, some tracks are plain odd, such as Meredith Monk's "Gotham Lullaby" with its random yelps and minor-chord la-la's and Errollyn Wallen's meandering, overlong "Daedalus", a rather pretentious art song. The schools provide two of the highlights here: "Swearing at the Moon" by Arieh Miller of JFS in London, and Venus Flytrap by students from Blatchingham Mill School in Hove. Both songs are performed by Ian Shaw, whose biting vocal mixes well with the discordant string arrangements. Elvis Costello frames the recording with the jaunty opener, "My Mood Swings" and his closing cover of Randy Newman's "Real Emotional Girl", a slow, heartbreaking ballad with Newman's trademark observations. The quartet itself performs with their brio intact, applying a lot of color and texture to the songs.

A genius worthy of Weill...finally..........2002-04-14
Throw in the gift of being able to belt one out with the best of them and it works. It works Big Time. This man is a genius. Not even Lenya delivers the Bilbao Song so well -- and I felt, in 2002, that I was hearing September Song for the first time. There isn't one clunker on the whole c/d.
Magnificent. Who is this man? where has he been all our lives?

Product Description
'"Venus, Meet the Moon" is the second release from the Seattle-based Blue Spark, led by Garth Reeves (ex-Goodness member). It's a collection of songs that's at once timeless and yet undeniably modern: strong voice up front, solid musicianship, grounded in the best of influences. It would be tempting to mutter the words "alt-country" while listening to it, but that would be doing a disservice to the layers of heartfelt soul and big, glorious rock and roll that's all over the place. It's a record chock full of organ, horns, and guitar solos that actually take you somewhere, accompanied by a voice that can take you just about anywhere.
