Truly Bellissima.......2003-07-25

Anna Moffo has the most beautiful voive ever heared, anywhere, ever. The arias on this CD showcase her drop-dead-gorgeous tone quality, stellar technique, and versitility. She sings everything one wants to hear, from the classic Puccini war-horses that are sure to get stuck in one's head (especcially since she sings them with perfect fluidity) to bel canto stuff on which she shocks you with coloratura ability (listen to "Una voce poce fa"). Moffo is the most underrated opera star of the golden age; voices and stage-presences like hers are nearly impossible to find today. Skip the spiffy new Renee Flemming disk - buy "La Bellissima" and go slack-jawed.

Introduction to Dame Nellie Melba.......2007-03-09

The "liner notes" say a great deal: "She was a singer who could achieve perfection that was beyond the capability of practically every other comparable singer both in her own and later times; yet she was always spoiling things. While it is true that in most of her recordings there will come a moment. . .when the heart of anyone who with a love of singing will miss a beat, yet, within seconds of affording this glimpse of paradise, she may bring you down to earth with a kind of vocal ungraciousness that was all her own."

Another introductory note. She was 44 on the earliest recordings and nearly 50 on later operatic recordings; there were some late recording sessions, including one mentioned below, when she was in her mid-60s.

A sampling of her recordings on this CD. . . .

From Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro," there is "Voi che sapete." Melba shows a light voice. The technology (acoustic), of course, obscures a lot of her vocal qualities. The transition from her lower to middle and upper registers is a bit rough. There is, though, a smooth line in her singing. She displays a rich voice.

The cut that best illustrates the comments quoted from the "liner notes" might be the "Mad Scene" from Thomas' "Hamlet." Melba shows a pretty agile voice in this work. Early on, there is a middling--but not very good--trill. She hits some high notes well early on. The first segment of the scene is smoothly and even elegantly sung. The cabaletta suggests that coloratura technique has changed from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century compared with the past 40 years or so. She hits her high notes fairly well. But there are some passages that are almost beyond describing. At one point, she sounds as if she were barking rather than singing. There were other examples, as the liner notes suggest, of "vocal ungraciousness." The cabaletta is not very compelling coloratura work as I listen to things.

On the other hand, her version of Puccini's "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" (from "La Boheme") is smoothly and well sung. Her "musicality" is good. All in all, a very nice version.

Finally, an interesting novelty. She sings "Swing low, sweet chariot" in her mid-60s. Her voice is darker and deeper than other cuts on this CD. But she exhibits a very musical version of this work. It is affecting, in fact. She does not overpower the song with operatic technique. This is a nice change of pace on the CD and is a solid version of this tune.

As a whole, this is up and down. There are the moments of great musicality--and some pretty ungracious singing, too. This appears to be a useful introduction to Melba's body of work.

I always enjoy this CD every time I drag it off my rack and stick it in the CD player. It contains some of the best tenor aria's ever written, and is an extreme joy to listen too. It has made me love opera. I almost cry during some of the tracks, they are so beautiful. I have never seen a opera compilation that is as good as this.

La Divina, La Callas.......2006-11-04

Clearly, what separates the human instrument from any other--piano, flute, whatever--is its full capacity to access the storyline, through words. Callas not only has great diction--unlike La Stupenda--, she also delivers her lines with faithful, emotive force that you end up believing her as the character. Above all, I think it's because she has such great control of her own instrument, she undermines the difficulties in these parts, which thus allows us, lucky audience, to achieve this credibility in her, and ultimately the composer's, work.

On another note, she's like the Meryl Streep of Opera; I just want to throw her some Oscars for this Mad Scene CD!

Anthological Callas.......2004-03-31

It has been said that Maria Callas' "Mad Scenes" is the recording that best defines her art. As Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Thomas' Ophelie, and Bellini's Imogene, Callas conveys intense feeling while maintaining a true legato and never "imposing" on the music. Anna's mad scene is the first Callas recording I ever heard, and it remains a favorite of mine. Nicola Resignio provides excellent support in each scene, and EMI's digitally remastered stereo sound is another asset. This is an essential collection for Callas and/or bel canto fans.

The original is the best.......2004-01-15

1958 was a terrible year for Callas.It started with the "Rome-scandal" and it ended with the headlines "Bing fires Callas". But in this year she also made her best recitals:the famous Verdi-recording and this fantastic mad scenes-recital.
Anna Bolena and Il pirata were long-forgotten operas,but Callas revived them with great success at la Scala.The heroines of this opera are very difficult to sing.You need a dark dramatic voice which has the agility to sing coloraturas and trills.And this singer also needs a lot of dramatic imagination to portray the changing moods of annas'and imogenes'troubled minds.I think Callas is absolutely perfect.
The mad scene of Ophelie is also great.Some high notes are a bit sharp,but Callas is very convincing and deeply touching.And her french pronounciation is much better than Sutherlands`.
This recording is a must have for everyone who loves Belcanto.I am glad,that Maria Callas discovered this wonderful music for us.
