Willie Bobo was cool--and hot. This music swings in a boogaloo/Latin soul/'60s sort of way. Swing by definition means not staying in one place. Some of Bobo's music slow, some is fast, some is sappy, and some is just plain greasy. "Fried Neck Bones and Some Homefries," anyone? Open your ears as Bobo tackles Hugh Masekela's "Grazing in the Grass" and Bacharach's and David's "The Look of Love" (with the bandleader tackling vocals as well as percussion). "Evil Ways" and "Spanish Grease" are a couple of songs that any Santana fan will recognize, but Bobo stamps them with his daring and idiosyncratic charm. --Jonathan E.

5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Icon of 60's Pop Culture.......2003-03-22

In the 60's, Willie Bobo created a bridge between Popular and Latin music using an ensemble of instruments that included electric bass and guitar and no keyboards. He used Popular songs and transformed them with Latin rhythms to create a truly unique sound. This allowed for an entire industry of songs to be created by many great artists and composers. Using Willie as an inspiration, Santana created many of his signature styles from these early recordings. If you listen to the music used in the first Austin Powers movie, you will hear Willie's style being used to signify the 60's culture. This man was never given credit for his contribution to the American Pop Culture of the 60's and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Hipped out trippy Bobo.......2000-09-29

The only thing wrong with this album is the hype. Acid jazz it aint. Psychedelic it aint. Tripped out hippy babes, I wish.

Trippy Bobo first cut is a genome for Sheryl Crow's soft top thingo about Melrose Place or whatever boogaloo on Santa Monica Boulevard.

"Evil Ways" hangs lower than the woman who hangs out with Jean and John and who knows who. Santana botched it for everyone but so did the seventies.

Willie had a line in latino versions of mainstream pop hits that proves Elvis Costello is derivative. Hear it with Bobo's does Bacharach with "Look of Love". No wonder Burt had his best years with Angie Dickinson (aka undercover police woman "Pepper Anderson") when Willie did his best work making covers and under the covers too.

On another Bobo classic hear him shame Tom Jones' sappy, arhythmic version of "It's Not Unusual".

Pop this CD in your 10 stacker in the boot of your 1995 Audi A6 and your whole Saturday is a goner.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty!.......2000-05-03

While I'd heard of Willie Bobo, it wasn't until I read somewhere that Santana covered his "Evil Ways" (written by one of his band members) that I was sufficiently intrigued and plunked down fifteen for this great, fun, greasy set of latin-jazz r&b/soul lounge music. It's got the feel of a lava lamp, the smell of patchouli, the hip of Peter Sellers' "The Party" written all over it. It's just a notch above Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (and believe me, in Keswick, I've seen every sixties album Herbie put out at garage sales!) and a level below Pancho Sanchez. That said, it's immensely fun and disarmingly toe-tapping. I repainted a backyard deck while listening to this CD last summer and it made the experience ENJOYABLE! A forgotten slice of sixties pop. Here's where you catch up...

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but not good either!.......1999-10-29

I've listened to Willie Bobo for years but was a little disappointed in this particular arrangmemt.

I'm still looking for "Fairy Tales for Two" can't seem to find it, but If any of you do.. You WON"T be disappointed...

4 out of 5 stars Acid Lounge perhaps?.......1999-06-17

I have to admit I never heard of Willie Bobo until a couple of weeks ago when I rented the film VERY BAD THINGS. Just for the record, my screen name was not inspired by him. However if people choose to think I adopted his last name for my moniker that is ok by me. Wilie Bobo is now on my list of favorite Jazz artists. I love the loungy feel of Bobos music. It captured that feel of a laid back bar of the 60's. What sets him apart from other lounge artists of his day is his versatility. There seems to be a melding of funk, rock, jazz and the Latin sounds. Willie Bobo is like Getz/Gilberto meets Burt Bacharach.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary vibraphone of Cal Tjader leads Latin Jazz........2001-08-22

Cal Tjader developed a thirst for Latin Music that became unquenchable when he discovered El Sonido Nuevo (The New Sound) of Afro-Cuban Jazz on the streets of New York City. He played with some of the all time greats through out his career, and from the founding of his Modern Mambo Quartet in 1954, to his death in 1982, he helped launch the careers of numerous musicians. His music continues to inspire, and have impact on the evolution of Latin music in the US.

The 16 tracks presented here are some mighty fine recordings, featuring Cal Tjader on vibes throughout. "Manteca" becomes a sexy weaving of melodies between the flute and vibes, adding depth to this modern classic. "Soul Burst" features an explosion of percussion by congas, timbales and more--while Tito Puente's "Picadillo" is rendered superbly as well.

Not a bad track on the CD, and you will have fun recognizing some of the 60's classic jazz performers that have joined in, including Chick corea, Donald Byrd, Willie Bobo, and more.

3 out of 5 stars Cover version crooner? Yes. But she's a classy one..........2003-01-06

If you're attuned to her approach to jazz as a bossa nova-lite/ pop-hybrid, no Astrud Gilberto CD can be all bad. These songs are all available elsewhere(and since the CD booklet here has nothing much to offer, you might want to stick with the actual albums), but her version of "Holiday" really IS jazzy and the opener "Beginnings" is fabulously funky. She's dreamy and intimate when she has to be, but Astrud also swings surprisingly well and this compilation captures a piece of that excitement. 'B'

2 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova NO-NO!.......2000-07-20

As a massive Astrud fan I was attracted by the number of titles on this collection that I'd not previously heard - on the first listen I realised why they'd escaped my attention for so long. A few of the tracks are hallmark Astrud, a few are 'bad' Astrud and a few are just awful in every way. Even the sleeve notes refer to several of the tracks very negatively which begs the question - what is the point? Astrud had moments of sheer genius, some points of popular appeal and some moments of absolute dodginess - unfortunately if you listened to this album your impression of AG would be a second rate, cover version crooner. Avoid this recording and stick to The Silver Collection or the awesome Verve Jazz Masters CD to hear Astrud Gilberto's inadvertent genius in all it's glory.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Stuff All around! Great for a jazz guitar newbie!.......2002-01-23

I always knew who Wes Montgomery was, but I've only VERY recently garnered an interest in jazz music.

So this, by pure random chance, was the first CD of his music that I've purchased. I admit it--the cover attracted me, that and I knew Verve was a reputable outfit.

The liner notes give a brief history of Mr. Montgomery and his style of playing, along with some quotes from people who played with him. For example, I learned that he played with his thumb, which many attribute as one of the reasons for his unique sound. Its a very warm, mellow tone. Great stuff.

The songs are all pretty much "groovin"--upbeat, uptempo, almost swinging stuff. The longer ones are the better ones in my opinion, as they show Mr. Montgomery's ablility to follow a great journey within one song--he takes you from point A to point Z and you love the whole trip.

In short, most of you looking for this kind of music already know what you want. But neophytes such as myself can truly enjoy such a fine album as this--and of course its made me want to buy more Verve CD's, and more of Wes M.

4 out of 5 stars Where That Sound Came From.......2002-06-25

The music of Jimmy Smith sampled on this CD (as well as that of his contemporaries) has been so widely influential in the years since, that it can be easy to miss the originality these recordings exhibited in their time. The contemporary listener may find some of these tracks downright corny, since Jimmy's grooves have been exploited to the point of being turned into cliches. After a track or two, though, the smooth, percolating rhythms become irresistible. Jimmy's organ and his turn-on-a-dime bands seem to be codifying the riffs that become the abc's of funk. That's why you'll hear this sound in everything from Sinatra to Chuck Brown to Cibo Matto.

4 out of 5 stars got to know your roots.......1999-12-14

I love lots of new jazz/funk/hiphop. there are great innovators in the new schools of fusion that combine hard beats with good lyrics all while using live artists to keep connected to where their music came from. the artists may respect their roots, but not enough listeners do. that's why albums like this are so important, to show curious listeners where the music they love sprang from. and jimmy smith definately had a strong hand in acid jazz and funk. this album is a great look at his verve years, and contains tracks from a ten year span of 1963 to 1972. in general much more upbeat than albums like "the sermon" from the late 50's this retrospective gives you the cream of jimmy. it shows his funky side on tracks like "funky broadway" and "I can't get no satisfaction" but also the larger big band and strings sound on "one mint julep" and "hobo flats." there are a few tracks that initially don't seem to match some of the others, but then jimmy tears up the organ and makes the track all the more rewarding. definately a good buy if you're looking to get into jimmy smith.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording...some of astruds' best work.......1999-02-05

This cd is a great introduction to the artist's work. It covers nearly all of the major phases of Astrud's career. Astrud has a sweet, almost sulky voice that you can easily fall in love with. She never complains through her music, she just quietly reflects. Highlights include her cover of Chicago's 'Beginnings'....A seemingly odd choice of material, but she completly makes the song her own. Immediatley followed by her powerful 'On my mind'....great classic 60's Astrud sound. 'Stay' Is also another sure hit...from the liner notes.."Little waves lap against the shore each one letting loose a faint hiss of static swoosh, then, surrendering to another wave. A new wave. Bossa novea. And the new wave sings its own song, lulling the beached tourist to sleep, to sizzle in the sun. Out of the beachgoers trebly transister radio, another new wave sings, an airy Brazilian voice with piping flutes, mingling with the sound of the sea:'Staaaaaay, and we'll make such sweet music.....'" also, "She's the girl with the faraway voice. The passion of the dispassionate. She's lovely, but she's elsewhere, thinking about something or someone else."...... there are very few singers in the world who are able to 'create' atmosphere..Astrud Gilberto is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Two Discs of superb jazz, at a great price........2001-08-22

If you like 1960's club style jazz, then this is the set for you. A superb collection of tunes that ranges from the smooth to hard bop. Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" has never sounded better than the 1964 recording included here featuring Donald Byrd. Milt Jackson on vibes and Hubert Laws on flute lead a sensational combination on "Bags and Strings." And Jimmy Smith appears here a number of times doing incredible things on the Hammond B3 organ on "The Cat," "James and Wes," and "Got My Mojo Workin'."

My favorite tunes are some of the Latin jazz inspired tunes of Cal Tjader on vibes, and "Manteca" featuring Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet and vocals is an outstanding performance recorded on March 4, 1961 at Carnegie Hall. A pair of tunes with Willie Bobo featured on Timbales ("Boogaloo in Room 802" and La Descarga del Bobo") are also wonderful to hear.

Two discs of classic recordings of some of jazz's finest performers. Absolutely great!
