Bassist Ron Carter provided the anchor for Miles Davis's band from 1963 to 1969, becoming an indispensable part of one of the trumpeter's greatest bands. While there's plenty of reflection on Davis's music and personality here, the emphasis is squarely on Carter's own long-standing quartet, featuring pianist Stephen Scott, drummer Payton Crossley and percussionist Roger Squitero. As you'd expect from that line-up the emphasis is often on rhythm, with Carter's warm-toned, resonant bass pulsing at the heart of the music. Davis's fleet "Seven Steps to Heaven" inspires racing invention from Scott and some vibrantly explosive percussion from Squitero, while "My Funny Valentine" has Scott playing with the kind of spare lyricism that was a Davis hallmark, Carter supplying a beautiful chordal accompaniment. There's even a bell-like elegance to the subtle blues-feel of "Bag's Groove." While much of the material alludes directly to Davis's inspiration, the quartet's also reflects one of Davis's own stylistic sources, pianist Ahmad Jamal's trio. --Stuart Broomer

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Special.......2007-07-19

I don't know...maybe i'm listening to too much Thelonious Monk (an incredible genius) so this CD by Ron Carter seems, by contrast, very middle of the road, like "ordinary everyday" jazz you might hear at a cocktail lounge. It's very well produced and very well played, but I hear no genius in the music, like I do when I listen to Monk.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired.......2007-06-25

The promotional materials accompanying "Dear Miles" quote Ron Carter as saying "I would have been offended 10 years ago if someone had asked me to do a Mile tribute album." Why Carter would suddenly be defensive about a Miles tribute at any point in his career is strange. He's been interpreting Miles materials continually as accompanist and bandleader since leaving Miles' greatest quintet around 1968.

It's not the project that's strange--Ron Carter was a seminal contributor to Miles' creations during Miles' most fertile period, so accusing him of plagiarism would be ludicrous--what's strange here is the choice of material. These are not Miles' heavy hitters. For the most part, they're not tunes associated exclusively with Miles at all. In fact, the track list would prompt many music lovers to put the CD back on the shelf. This is a badly shop-worn setlist. Who wants to hear another "My Funny Valentine"? What's been done with it since Chet Baker that compelled a second listen? "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "Stella by Starlight"? It sounds like an "as-seen-on-TV" compilation.

But from the first cut, it's apparent that something remarkable is happening on "Dear Miles". "Gone," one of Gil Evans' finest big band arrangements from "Porgy and Bess," is transmuted in its translation to the quartet format to become something wonderful indeed. "My Funny Valentine" gets an overhaul that rediscovers something at the heart of the tune that is beautiful in its simplicity. And then there's "Bag's Groove," a tune that Carter has beautifully reinterpreted before (notably in a duet with Jim Hall), but never to greater effect on this CD. Even "As Time Goes By" becomes something new and vibrant here.

This is Carter's best work since 1999's Latin-inspired "Orfeu," and his greatest traditional small ensemble work since Miles.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL, SIZZLING MILES DAVIS TRIBUTE BY RON CARTER AND THREE TALENTED FRIENDS........2007-06-20

Five ENJOYABLE Stars!! Composer, arranger, educator, perennial jazz poll- and Grammy-winner Ron Carter, unquestionably one of the greatest bassists in jazz history, has conjured up a great tribute to Miles Davis, who brought him front and center in the jazz world. Historically, Mr Carter arrived in the quintet after the "Kind of Blue" era, playing from 1963 to 1968 teaming up with Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams to form one of jazz' most stellar rhythm sections, playing many of these very songs. This CD is a wonderful set of Miles associated-songs which are fresh while often maintaining much of the atmosphere of the originals. Mr Carter is joined by the stupendously inventive Stephen Scott on piano, superlative drummer Payton Crossley and master percussionist Roger Squitero. Wonderfully recorded, you can often hear the reverberations of Mr Carter's strings suspending the notes in the air longer than we normally hear.

The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, begin with a song I listened to six consecutive times before moving on: the 5-minute "Stella by Starlight" which begins with a bridge fragment and is a robust, wonderfully-constructed, touching extended bass solo by the 'bassist-extraordinare' with some tasteful piano, percussion and great brush support. And look for Ron's amazing 'mystery note' near the end, in a performance that mirrors the Miles Davis tempo and atmosphere but stands on it's own; ditto for the tempo shifting "My Funny Valentine". "Gone" has some superlative drumming, stout Carter 'walking', great Scott pianism, and great overall interplay. "Seven Steps To Heaven" starts out in a familiar vein but launches into it's own trajectory from there with Scott absolutely on fire and with some muscular bongo playing by 'conguero' Squitero. The waltz "Some Day My Prince Will Come" starts out where we would expect and Scott turns it funky and bluesy in a great performance that almost sounds 'Brubeck-ian' near the end. There are two Ron Carter compositions: the blazing fast "Cut and Paste" with Crossley showing his 'accent' and solo mastery and Carter giving a bass-walking seminar, and the bluesy, almost "So What"-ish "595" which is a showcase for Ron's writing and arranging plus Squitero's background percussive virtuosity. Don't let the song times dissuade you, each satisfying song gets a thorough examination and exposition. Now 70, a fleet-fingered, highly-inventive Ron Carter is as potent a bassist and as vital a composer and group leader as ever, inspiring those around him as evidenced by this disc. My Highest Recommendation. Five WONDERFUL Stars!!

Evidence that one can make a musical about anything, Exhibit A: 1776. As one might expect, the whole concept of making a musical about the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence was greeted in the late 1960s with, well, ridicule. The show debuted on Broadway in 1969, and three years later, when its run finally ended, it was its producers who had the last laugh. In addition, it toured for an additional two years and beat out Hair (in 1969 yet!) for a Tony Award. This recording, with the original Broadway cast, includes many of the same actors who went on to star in the film, the version with which most audiences today are probably familiar. One notable exception is Rex Everhart, who replaced Howard da Silva at some performances and on this recording. But there's still William Daniels as John Adams, though in some cases his performance is more subdued than it was on film. Musically, 1776 is an odd creation, considering when it came into being. As one might expect, there's a lot of fife and drum going on, especially in the opening number and during "The Lees of Old Virginia." For those less than familiar with the plot, it hinges on the idealism of Adams, who's trying his best to back up the American Revolution with some legislative action, and spends much of his time arguing with either the Continental Congress or God, as in "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve": "A second flood, a simple famine / Plagues of locusts everywhere / Or a cataclysmic earthquake / I'd accept with some despair / But no, you sent us Congress / Good God, sir, was that fair?" (One could argue that he gets further with God.) While not entirely historically accurate, and containing some rather peculiar numbers (Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams sitting around debating what their new country's national bird is going to be ranks among the oddest), there's no questioning 1776's staying power. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sound Quality not perfect on CD.......2007-07-18

This is a new CD, overall quality and amazon procedure were excellent. The CD itself on a few songs fails to provide enough amplification to the background chorus or secondary singer, thus I must strain to actually hear both duet parts, with the latter almost inaudible. For example, Lee's of Old Virginia, Till Then, and Who will write our new declaration. It is not in my players, but within the CD. I actually ordered this because I wanted Violin by Betty Buckley and am satisfied with the reproduction overall, but it also has the audio problems with Adams and Franklins lines within the song

5 out of 5 stars Before Sondheim's COMPANY and after MAN OF LA MANCHA..........2007-04-30

For me, 1776 is a great companion to MAN OF LA MANCHA as one of the most entertaining AND intellectually worthy amalgams of music, lyrics, book, theme, plot, characterizations and dialogue to ever come out of pre-1970's Broadway musical theatre. Each song is like a little gem, and displays the broad range of emotions and ideas with which 1776 brims. Satiric, romantic, hilarious, heartbreaking, disturbing, dark, inspiring, thoughtful, humane, and even a little bawdy, the songs glide and tromp all over the map, as does the show itself. As with LA MANCHA, 1776 broke open the Broadway musical, making it a pitch-perfect example of what can truly make a musical more than a toe-tapping time killer... while never becoming tedious, pompous, windy, or dull. If anything, it crackles with suspense.

And as to the reviewer who was shocked that it would win out over HAIR? Listen to "Mamma Look Sharp" or "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" to hear exactly the play's political and often-unflattering ideological landscape. This was definitely a Vietnam-era play whose content was as disturbingly pertinent, then, as it is, now. And, despite all of this, the score and play never become leaden or preachy. On the contrary, each performance is a gem, and each character is witty and unique. Who knew that history could be a passionate and fun adventure?

1 out of 5 stars Overrated Tony Award Winner.......2006-06-16

How could this musical win the Tony award having as a competitor a play like HAIR which - for many people - stands as an emblematic theatre piece of the 60's? Who remembers a tune out of this musical? On the contrary, "Aquarius", "I Got Life" or "Walking in Space" are still popular and they play all over the world. Even ZORBA and PROMISES PROMISES - both candidates for the award in the same year - have songs that are still remembered. 1776 may wake up patriotic feelings to American listeners which is quite understandable but the music and songs are old-fashioned, overrated and awfully boring.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Definitive and Remarkably Accurate!.......2005-12-18

1776 has become an institution, thanks to the motion picture which was made of this original Broadway show, and which starred most of the cast from the theatrical production. It gets rerun every July 4th week on some movie channel or local station!

William Daniels IS John Adams to many people, and even though the story of the birth of the United States probably wasn't this lyrical and lively, Composer Sherman Edwards was historically accurate in the facts of the tale.

In addition to learning about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this is also love story... in fact two love stories, with John Adams and his wife Abigail, separated by circumstance and interacting only in his mind, and Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, here, played by the big throated (and now legendary) Betty Buckley.

There is also a sense of fraternity, with the members of the Continental Congress grappling with the concept of breaking away from a tyranical ruler. And even though you know the outcome, the story is still filled with tension and excitement in the mechanics of it. Just how DID this country get formed?

The disc's liner notes explain the show's libretto and give you some rare behind-the-scenes info about the creation of the musical, the challenges it faced before becoming the standard that it now is, and a bit about the amazing Mr. Edwards, which is a story worthy of being told as well.

It's an Independence Day must!

5 out of 5 stars Saw this on Broadway .......2005-11-12

Saw this show, with original cast, on Broadway in '69 and it has stayed with me ever since then. Every time I listen to these songs, I laugh. The historical figures (done with some tongue-in-cheek) are highly entertaining and even better if you see the movie. I would recommend the dvd for a great, lighthearted evening, and good family entertainment. You can't miss with this one! A winner on all fronts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A nice escape from the traditional.......2007-07-17

First of all, let me say that if you are looking for a traditional Bluegrass album from one of the best musicians in the country then you will be disappointed with this album. Secondly, if you are looking for something from an artist that is thought-provoking, deep, spiritual and evolving then you will LOVE this project.

While Ron has several Country/Bluegrass tracks on this album, there are several that are not what you would expect at all. But that is a good thing, check that, great thing. Ron shows his diversity and growth as a musician and songwriter. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, the musicianship is outstanding and the harmonies are, at times, haunting. The song DoorWay is my particular favorite.

This is a great album from a great musician. Nice work, Ron.

4 out of 5 stars Doorway CD.......2007-07-16

Ron Block is a gifted song writer. This is a good CD and worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Radiance, truth and power.......2007-06-22

Playing Time - 40:28 -- It's been over six years since all-around musician Ron Block released his debut solo album, "Faraway Land." Besides focusing on family, the talented guy's been so busy clocking road miles with Alison Krauss & Union Station that doing another solo project was down a ways on his priority list. Like on "Faraway Land," his compelling self-penned songs on "DoorWay" are arranged with all-star casting, dynamics, and varied tempos. His big musical vision taps inspiration and gains strength from various genres. Dan Tyminski, Stuart Duncan, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss are back again to lend their able support. Others in the lineup include Barry Bales, Adam Steffey, Viktor Krauss, Suzanne Cox, Sidney Cox, Andy Hubbard, and the Forbes Family.

The cornerstone of Block's music is his thoughtful, intimate and personal lyrics. He's said that his songs come quickly and easily or else they sound contrived. Most make reference to his faith-based beliefs, and others offer new perspectives on his updated take on the world and where to find direction and guidance. Ron proclaims that Jesus Christ is the center of his being and answer to his needs. As a gospel songwriter, Ron says, "my first order of business is making sure I am abiding in Christ - meaning that I am resting in him, knowing he lives in me, and is living through me to others." He understands that he can comfort others with the comfort he's received from God. Alison Krauss once said, "Ron has had the ability to change lives with his words." What more could a songwriter hope for! A new website with lyrics and commentary for DoorWay is in the works and should be up and running soon.

"DoorWay" is also a musical treat for the senses because Block explores images, textures, and colors that are both bright and sedate. With calmness and composure, intimate singer/songwriter settings typify "The Kind of Love," "The Blackness of the Need," "Secret of the Woods," and "Someone." There's the intense soulful loveliness and devout tone of "Things Aren't Always As They Seem." Uplifting bluegrass gospel rousers include "Along the Way" and "Be Assured." Smooth and evocative, "Love's Living Through Me When I Do" is folk-pop with a dreamy delivery. The title cut, "DoorWay," provides a beautifully reflective moment at the middle of the set. Like the rest of the conceptual album, Ron wants us to think about whether we'll keep on stumbling through the desert or whether we'll make the leap of faith and see with God's vision. "I See Thee Nevermore" is a sweetly wistful instrumental. Block shakes things up with his gritty alt-country groove on "Above the Line." "Flame" takes us on a journey into his Effortland. "I know the flame of the burning tree / is the flame that burns in the deep of me / The love of the Father."

Sturdy and self-confident, Ron Block carefully cultivates his music with a strong personal belief in its depth and meaning. "DoorWay" shows that his inner fire burns with the conviction of his soul. Block has discovered what he stands for in life and what he has to do with his music. As a result, the master's songs exhibit radiance, truth and power.
The message of inner reliance on Christ is fundamental to what Ron Block is doing. He plans to continue expanding these ideas through music and books. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars "Diamonds, that'll shut her up. For a minute.".......2007-07-19

Ron White's breakthrough CD "Drunk in Public" is absolutely hilarious. Whether it's discussing what jewelry slogans should be, his opinions on car salesmen, or his classic "Tater Salad" story (which if I hear 500 times, I'll laugh 500 times), you'll find yourself laughing hysterically. The only track I didn't like was Osama Bin Laden as it was too gross for me. That said, it still doesn't deter me from highly recommending this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Tacky and Hilarious.......2007-05-12

Though not as good as the cd, Mr. White leaves out some prime lines, you'll still laugh out loud. His great talent is not just timing, but the cadence of his voice that makes ordinary language hysterical.

5 out of 5 stars A more tolerable commute.......2007-05-27

Ron White is hilarious; a great story teller. I commute in miserable traffic to Wash., DC and I need safe distractions. This is safe until I start cracking up. I can also listen to the cd a few times in a row and it just doesn't get old. If you appreciate "good old boy" humor, this one's for you. Very, very funny.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-01-11

I love Ron White so obviously I would rate his CD high. It's great to listen to with friends or on a long car ride. Definitely not something you want children listening to because of the language and content.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Fix Stupid.......2007-01-10

Ron White is always good, but this one stands out as an example of his sharp mind and cutting wit.

1 out of 5 stars Yes you can!!.......2006-11-20

You can fix it, stupid!! Stop drinking and smoking for one!! This proves that Hillbillies will laugh at anything. Listen to SMART comedy, peo-ple! Like Woody or baron Cohen!!

2 out of 5 stars Almost pornographic.......2006-08-14

I am a huge Ron White fan, so I hate to give it a low score - but this CD just seemed to me like he sunk to a new level. Almost every track on this CD is a crotch joke and/or relates to sex, and where I am definately not a prud - I felt a little sleazy for listening to it. I was very disappointed. I highly recommend his previous CD "Drunk In Public" instead.

Even though he accompanied any number of legends during the late 1950s and '60s, Steve Kuhn doesn't have the name recognition of other jazz artists who came of age during that period. But few pianists have maintained as high a standard as he has in the mainstream trio setting. Live at Birdland, which occasions the reunion of one of his best threesomes--the bassist is Ron Carter, the drummer Al Foster, both Miles Davis alumni--is one of his most consistently engaging albums. A keen intelligence and lively wit is at work on this tuneful terrain, which ranges from the shifting tempos and tones of "Jitterbug Waltz" to the luminous reflection of Carter's "Little Waltz" (which the bassist graces with a lovely solo) to the lovely intersection between Billy Strayhorn's "Passion Flower" and a Debussy waltz, "La Plus Que Lente." There's a romping aspect to the set as well: In his late 60s, Kuhn has lost nothing in speed or agility, rendering Kenny Dorham's "Lotus Blossom" with light-fingered brilliance. If another pianist hadn't stolen the "State of the Art" tag, he certainly could hang out that shingle on this album, one of the most enjoyable in this vein in quite some time. --Lloyd Sachs

4 out of 5 stars a nice evening out.......2007-06-28

a light deft touch marks kuhn's style. had me thinking of art tatum and oscar peterson. if i were a bell reminded me of miles' rendition on relaxin' with miles. some other jazz standards, a selection written by kenny dorham, trumpeter, two kuhn originals. one of my favorites, jitterbug waltz by fats waller, has me regretful i was not at birdland the night this was recorded, what a nice night that must had been. and you can't go wrong with al foster and ron carter, little waltz written by carter. a theme of music and flowers, two waltzes, a passion flower and a lotus blossom, in starlight, a slow hot wind blowing. this could be a presumptuous picture in other hands, kuhn, nicely, carries it off.

5 out of 5 stars Very Appealing Live Trio Set.......2007-06-05

The 10 tracks were selected by Kuhn as the best from a four-night run at Birdland. The pianist rented a Hamburg-D Steinway (his favorite) for the occasion, and makes it sparkle. As others have indicated, audio quality is outstanding, making you feel like you're sitting in the club. I probably own close to 50 CDs with Ron Carter on bass, but I've never heard him as clearly as on this recording. The music is spontaneous and inventive, and should please just about anyone. Great playing all around by these 3 classy veterans; Kuhn's virtuosity peaks on the final cut --Charlie Parker's Confirmation, a most appropriate selection for this venue.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've bought this year........2007-05-26

Great album! It is rare to have such musical genius and recording excellence combine on one CD. Steve Kuhn sounds like - Steve Kuhn and nobody else. Teamed with Ron Carter and Al Foster, the trio creates wonderful chemistry on the best-engineered live performance you will ever hear. Katherine Miller is credited with recording, mixing and mastering the album. If this is an example of her expertise, I am going to start looking for her name in album credits like I used to look for Rudy Van Gelder.

5 out of 5 stars Hail the Return of the Great Steve Kuhn Trio.......2007-04-12

On the 20th anniversary of their 1986 recording at the Village vanguard, the Steve Kuhn trio (featuring Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums) reconvenes for two glorious nights of traditional AND adventurous jazz at Birdland. Like its predecedssor, the sessions are marked first and foremost by Kuhn's incredibly rich and distinctive tone. The Big-Ben theme that opens the first tune, "If I Were a Bell," establishes the sound right away. And like the 1986 date, the interplay between the three players is dazzling--and seemlingly effortless.

But "Live at Birdland" is not a mere re-do. If, at the time, the Village Vanguard sessions proved a high-water mark for the pianist's career, he proceeded to follow it up with an uninterrupted flow of excellent live and studio recordings that showed him stretching his vocabulary and developing his prowess in ways one had previously not expected from him. "Live at Birdland" is a masterful culmination of such experiments. He has more confidence than ever before, which enables him to solo more effectively.

"Jitterbug Waltz" was a highlight of the first record. It was a restrained, elegant classic that underwent a series of impressive tempo shifts without ever undergoing a change in mood. Here it acheives all this plus more: in the opening solo Kuhn states the theme more fully. The trio then treat it to a number of variations and tempo shifts. At roughly the seven-minute mark, there is a terribly exciting kick into another gear for several minutes, which then cools down into the closing section.

There are inevitable comparisons between the two recordings, since Kuhn decides to use a handful of the same tunes for each. Thankfully, this decision is not repetitious. And, when Kuhn does introduce new material, it startles. The final tune, a driving rendition of Parker's "Confirmation," will leave you breathless.

4 out of 5 stars Solid and Stylish.......2007-03-16

If this isn't my very favorite Steve Kuhn album, it's still very stylish, creative and lovely. It's nice to hear these vets together in live setting and Kuhn remains one of the best unheralded players. I
would still go first for his trio albums with David Finck and Billy Drummond (mostly on Reservoir I think), or some of the ECM titles for their 'experimentalism.' This one shows another side though. Very fine stuff.

It should come as no surprise that it took sex, disease and death to shake the Rolling Stones out of their latest creative dry spell. Leading up to the making of A Bigger Bang, produced by Don Was, Mick Jagger endured a very public break-up with Jerry Hall, Charlie Watts battled throat cancer, and Ron Wood was devastated by the news of his ex-wife's suicide. Out of their collective struggles, the members of the venerable British rock band managed to piece together some of their best work in nearly two decades. It's a slick, slightly uneven affair bounding from raunchy blues to MOR rock songs that sound suspiciously like they were left over from the Alfie soundtrack, yes, but it also sounds vital at every turn. Even though they don't really need to, the jet-set vagabond rockers plunge into hot-button politics ("Sweet Neo Con"), rummage through their dirty laundry ("Oh No, Not You Again") and dip cautious toes back into ridicule-tempting "Miss You"-style funk ("Rain Fall Down"), without making any major missteps unless you count the ewwwww-factor of a 61-year-old Keith Richards singing "Come on honey, bare your breasts and make me feel at home" on "This Place Is Empty." --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WELCOME BACK, STONES!.......2007-07-11

A Bigger Bang released in 2005 is one of the stronger albums the Stones have ever released. It is one that I continually go back to time and time again unlike anything they have done since 83's Undercover. What makes it so good? Well, for starters the Stones are not interested in chasing the latest musical trends on this release. It is straight ahead simple rock and roll-what we always have loved about the Rolling Stones. Secondly the band is playing like they WANT to play again. By that I mean there is a fire there that has been missing, an intensity that can make even an average song sound that much better. Perhaps the quality of the material reinvigorated them or perhaps it was simply the fact that on this release they used very little outside help and play all the instruments and sing all of the vocals themselves. Not too many cooks in the kitchen, if you know what I mean. It's not a perfect record, but a very very good one and it feels good to say that along with the 4 classics, Aftermath, Some Girls, Tattoo You and now A Bigger Bang can be seen as the core of this band's monumental musical legacy.

1. Rough Justice- kicks things off and it is a great rocker and album opener. Woody's slide work is phenomenal. A great way to open an album and this track tells you right from the start that the Stones as we know them are back.

2. Let Me Down Slow- A popier rock song with a catchy swinging beat. One of the better songs on the album and great lyrics by Jagger who appears to be the one most responsible for the song.

3. It Won't Take Long- This one opens with a trademark Richards riff, albeit a bit pedestrian. The Stones, however, play it with a passion that helps make it better than just filler.

4. Rain Fall Down- A sly funky tune reminiscent of Miss You but not as good. The song works, however, and is a welcome addition to their catalogue.

5. Streets of Love- This is one of 2 mistakes on the album. A slow ballad that weighs in on the sappy side. The Stones have done this before and much better. See Out Of Tears from Voodoo Lounge and Memory Motel from Black and Blue.

6. Back of My Hand- Ahh, ok we're back. A slow blues tune. Engaging guitar work throughout the song and you'll find yourself singing along with this one. It is the kind of song that the Stones, in the past decade or so, have saved for b-sides. I am glad they decide here to include it on an album. VERY welcome indeed.

7. She Saw Me Coming- This is one of my favorite songs on the album and maybe in past years this would have made an excellent single. The sense of humor is back in the lyrics and it also contains a nice riff to chug it along.

8. Biggest Mistake- A Jagger tune without a doubt, very similar to his solo material of late. It's not a bad song by any means but neither is it above average. It sounds good while it's playing but you won't miss it once it's over.

9. This Place is Empty- The first of 2 Richards sung songs. This one is a barroom styled ballad and a great one at that.

10. Oh No Not You Again- The Stones as we know and love them, great riffs and guitars harkening back to the Some Girls days. Yes, it IS them again and we are happy to have you back! Easily one of the better songs on this release.

11. Dangerous Beauty- Another rocker that seems as though it is filler, but it is better than that. I think this one will be one of those 'overlooked gems' because of it's placement so deep into the release. The solo sounds as it were done by BB King.

12. Laugh I Nearly Died- A slow rocker in which Jagger sings like he hasn't in a long time. Perhaps his best vocal performance since Gimme Shelter. He steals this one away and the breakdown at the end is priceless. Amazing creation!

13. Sweet Neo-Con- Ahh, mistake number 2. Many people have said that this is their favorite song on the album but I have to believe that is due to the political nature of the song. Judging it just as a song it isn't bad but it just never really goes anywhere. Would have made a nice b-side or bonus track.

14. Look what the Cat Dragged In- This is one of my favorite songs on the album. It has a funky, jazzy riff and guitars that are similar to those in Undercover. Charlie, as usual, keeps the beat rolling and this is one of the highlights of the album.

15. Driving Too Fast- Like the song before it this is another rocker. A very good song but not as good as 'Cat'. Play it loud for best effect!

16. Infamy- The second Richards tune that works but the Stones used to close out their albums with songs that were magnificent, not just good. Moonlight Mile, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Shattered, Fingerprint File to name a few. Well, this is nitpicking. I like the song and it fits in well with the album.

I gave this album 5 stars because the album itself deserves 4 stars but I added one because I feel that for a band in their 60's this blows away almost or all of the rock music being released today by much younger bands. Yes, this is the comeback album Stones fans have been waiting for. It is the Stones doing what they do. Nothing more and nothing less-which is always a good thing. That is the key to A Bigger Bang. The Stones are no longer at the forefront of the pop audience. They are not trying to keep up with the latest musical trends on this release. They are not concerned with top 40 radio nor are they interested in breaking new ground. The secret here is easy-Keep it simple, stick to the basics, crank it up and rock and roll.

Welcome back, boys! I am glad it's you again!

4 out of 5 stars Biggest Bang Since Some Girls.......2007-06-20

A Bigger Bang is a great comeback by the Stones. Ron Woods slide on Rough Justice gets it off to arolicking start. It wont take long has good guitar.Rain Kept Falling has a Miss you vibe. Streets of Love is great. Back of my Hand continues the Stones great blues legacy. Laugh i Nearly Died is good blues too. The rock songs Oh No not you Again, Dangerous Beauty and Look At What The Cat Dragged In, make A Bigger Bang the best Stones cd since Some Girls.

4 out of 5 stars If only new bands were half this good and consistent.......2007-03-30

I must say, the stones still have it in them.
As someone said before my, this is not the next best thing or the record to redefine music, it is just straight ahead good rock.
Man they are 60+ and listen to them ! Real musicians only get better with time... it's the public that stop listening really listening to what they are saying once they are not "pop" "mainstream" or young enough.
Listen to the record, yes it is a great record...
Oh one last thing, Sweet neo con, IMO is the best song on the album, music and lyrics, it stands on it's own as a great song.

4 out of 5 stars Back to form.......2007-03-17

"A Bigger Bang" is the Stones album I've been hoping for since 1983's "Undercover." This album contains only the core band with a minimal amount of outside musicians, unlike the extravaganzas on prior ones. It's great to hear the four Stones, plus a bassist and maybe a piano player, cranking out rock-n-roll just like the old days. This basic rawness is sadly missing on every album since "Undercover".

"Bang" shows that the Stones still have it, and that they can give any modern act a run for their money. I hope the Stones know what works and make their future albums along this vein.

4 out of 5 stars They've still got the "Bang".......2007-01-23

This CD, along with the Stones 2007 Wall Calendar, made a perfect gift for my rock 'n roll sister. Perfect pairing. We are contemporaries of the Stones and its good to see the old guys still tearing the house down.

3 out of 5 stars Needs major reissue, like its DVD.......2007-01-13

As others have said, many of the songs are incomplete, missing verses from the movie. However, this may not be fixable, if the masters are lost. But the mix needs a major overhaul.

Currently bundled as a throwaway with the DVD, which also needs some help, before everyone associated with the production is dead...most of the cast and important crew are gone.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD but....................2006-12-06

I got this CD before I saw the movie. I fell in love with the songs immediately. It's easily one of the best musicals ever (in my opinion). But then I saw the movie. There was so much the soundtrack left out! "Pick a Pocket or Two" is missing verses; they don't have the reprise of "Pick a Pocket or Two" or "Reviewing the Situation"; and other songs are missing things. Hopefully they will re-release this on a better CD in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Best version--available elsewhere!.......2005-12-29

I grew up on this movie and after buying the Broadway soundtrack, missed the movie cast. Although this CD is out of print, the same CD comes free with purchase of the newest release of the film on DVD. The cast and orchestrations make this CD the best in my opinion, and under $20 for both DVD and CD is a steal!

4 out of 5 stars Still A Great Soundtrack CD Regardless Of The Nit-Picking!.......2005-04-09

Stop with the nit-picking and just enjoy the CD!

I swear, some people just aren't happy! We are so lucky to have a CD soundtrack of this film! Why must you say it doesn't sound good? How good CAN it sound considering the source materials from 1968??

I think it sounds damn good considering the age of the recordings.
There isn't anything wrong with the way it sounds, as far as I can tell, and I'm an audiophile! I have heard so much worse recordings when albums are finally 'remixed' & 'remastered' for CD!
As far as verses being left out, well,...I guess you'll have to listen to the original London stage cast recordings?

I had this on LP as a child in 1968 and played it almost to death, and I'm excited to finally get it on CD!!
These songs are so special to me because I listened to the record so much. I still know most of the lyrics!
My next Amazon.com purchase is the DVD!!

These are great songs, and this album still holds up well after
all these years.
If you like soundtrack recordings, you'll probably like this CD.

Yes, it may have flaws and 'missing' lyrics, but just enjoy it!

It could be worse--we might not even have this CD available at all!

4 out of 5 stars Lyrically, Musical, A Fine Soundtrack.......2004-03-20

There have been a few remakes over the years, and even this, too, is a remake. In general, due to the musical power of Lionel Bart, they all work. However, this is the one which won the awards and the hearts of listeners.

Why?

It sounds like it is fresh out of the box, without that contrived, "trying to sound like Broadway" vocalized music. These guys are singing, not just putting notes to words. Their accents are believable and never forced.

I first had "Oliver!" in LP form when I was a child, back when vinyl was the thing. The CD is great, but could be brighter. Hopefully, a better version is on its way. If they can fix that, my four stars will become six.

"Food, Glorious Food/Oliver!" -- This is the famous song about wanting what rich man have, indigestion!

"Boy for Sale" -- It is what you think, child slavery in Merry Ol' England. It is sing somber, cold and bitter.

"Where Is Love?" -- Oliver asks the eternal question, wandering empty and missing the family he never had. You can feel his pain and loneliness, a theme known by every character from Fagin to the Dodger.

"Pick a Pocket or Two" -- Fagin remarks his angst against society, and his response to poverty. He's half Pied Piper, half Robin Hood, and half mob boss and 100% bad. His voice is rich and layered.

"Consider Yourself" -- The Artful Dodger lets Oliver knows that family is family, even when they aren't family. Catchy song.

"I'd Do Anything" -- The Dodger and Nancy declare their bond of friendship, and Oliver and Fagin chime in.

"Be Back Soon" -- The song seems at first like it was tossed in, but Moody's elocution is perfect.

"As Long as He Needs Me" -- Nancy sings about her love for her thieving, deceitful man, Bill. Her love is buoyed by codependency and insecurity.

"Who Will Buy?" -- Mark Lester's quiet, meek voice is perfect for the role of Oliver Twist.

"It's a Fine Life" -- How living the simple life is not as bad as it seems, but aren't sure things couldn't be better. Fagin and Nancy, and the cast of children dialogue through song. "If you don't mind having to deal with Fagin. It's a fine life!"

"Reviewing the Situation" -- Fagin asks, "I'm reviewing the situation. Can a fellow be a villain all his life?"

"Oom-Pah-Pah" -- Nancy leads the chorus in a beer lifting song that is fun all the way through.

Producer Joseph Papp's Broadway spin on Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance cannily employs pop firepower in its casting, adding an inviting Yankee accent to roles normally associated with (and sometimes embalmed in) plummy English locution. Erstwhile country-rocker Linda Ronstadt, who by this point had already proven she could tackle pre-rock pop standards, stretches successfully as its heroine. Rex Smith, then dismissed as a pop-rock heartthrob, proves he could be a "legitimate" musical leading man, a niche he's since inhabited comfortably. And Kevin Kline returns to his stage training as the hearty King of the Pirates. Onstage, Papp celebrated the slapstick possibilities of the deliberately silly plot, which weaves reliably tart observations about class consciousness and gender politics into a pirate band's invasion of a Cornish coastal town. A faithful big-screen adaptation added Angela Lansbury for marquee clout, but even without that grande dame of the Great White Way, this original stage cast is a corker, the music glorious and the performances spirited. --Sam Sutherland

You have to be a muscial fan to love this. This play is very fun and funny. This soundtrack has the songs from this wonderful play that you will want to hear over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Recording of an Outstanding Score.......2006-11-07

The entire "Pirates" score plus much of the dialogue is found in this recording. The voices are extremely appropriate to each of the characters, and the comedy of the score is apparent. The energy is extremely high, which, in turn, excites the listener. I never tire of listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful G & S.......2006-11-04

My favourite performance of this classic Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta. Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstat, and the whole cast are perfect.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD!!.......2006-10-30

I love listening to these CD's. (There are 2 of them.) This recording of The Pirates of Penzance is great fun and quite entertaining. The lyrics are enclosed so I can check to see what is being sung if I'm not sure. The melodies are enchanting. The wonderful humor of Gilbert and Sullivan is intact. The silliness and musical talent remind me of the Marx Brothers, especially something like A Night at the Opera.

Linda Ronstadt is amazing! Kevin Kline can do anything! George Rose IS the modern Major General! And Rex Smith ("how rare his beauty") is perfect!
