After traveling to Portugal numerous times...one grows to love the FADOS. Which to me shows the true passion of the culture.

Tori Amos.......2004-03-09

The first song seems to meander into a Tori Amos copy-cat look alike. Its good thought, but alonh with the Amos impersonation, there seems to be an affinity between this album and newage Celtic inspiration. silk-screen voice overs and "poingnant" prayer sessions (on the first "Tori Amosish" track)make this somewhat suspect. This is more a concept album of how Portugal sees itself through the influences of pop culture. Don't get me wrong. Its nice and some songs are very good. I just was taken aback by the popish feel. I feel that this is a more robust version of MADREDEUS, which by the way seems increasingly bland with every hearing (ever since I listened to Mariza's FADO CURVO.

A more universal appeal.......2003-12-11

Nice to hear a new voice from Portugal who isn't singing Fados. Pontes draws on a wide spectrum of music, giving this CD a more jazzy feel. There is nothing mournful about these selections, she celebrates life in all its vigor as depicted in her yoga pose on the cover. In fact, one could say there is more a Brazilian quality to her music, although she apparently draws on Portuguese popular music themes, bringing in such eclectic items as Swedish bagpipes and the Madagascar Valiha. She makes a very pleasant alternative to the current wave of Portuguese Fado singers who are currently dominating the World Music scene.

Pure Beauty!.......2001-10-23

This is an extraordinary work! My first Dulce Pontes album was Caminhos and I fell in love with it almost immediately. Most of the people who I've played it for have rushed out and bought it. I have since bought all of the others and am constantly amazed at her ability to interpret music. I know very little Portuguese and, until I found her website, had no idea what she was singing about. But the beauty of her voice and the passion with which she sings overshadow any need for a 'literal translation'. My basic feeling was that Dulce Pontes could do no wrong.

But I was just not prepared for 'O Primiero Canto'! This album really does take her work (and my appreciation for the power of the human voice) to a whole new level. She's one of those singers who will make you believe that she sings every note directly to you. And the acoustic nature of this album enhances that effect even further. As with practically all of her prior work, she pours her heart and soul into this album and one can't help but be drawn in.

For those who might be intimidated by the fact that she's not singing in English, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Dulce Pontes is living proof that music is a universal language. Anyone who's truly a lover of music will love this album and will soon be out buying more of her work. She will enthrall you!

P. S. Those of you who haven't heard 'Brisa Do Coracao' (her live album) MUST drop everything at this very moment and run out and get it (Well? What are you waiting for? Go!!). For one thing, her performance at this concert is stunning, and the fact that it's a live recording further demonstrates her incredible talent. Secondly, the love that pours from the audience gives you chills!

This is a `desert island' CD. One of the most pretty bits which I have ever heard [second only to my very favorite [virginal]. CD.] One could not ask for a better match of music a MELLOW harpsichord. Exquisite playing.The printed notes are dandy and the engineering and recording first rate. A `keeper'.

Um Violao Em Primeiro Plano.......2006-07-06

I first saw Rosinha De Valenca live, when she was the guitarist with Brazil 65 here in San Francisco many moons ago - and was totally captiviated with her sound and also the way she played - she and the guitar were one element. So, I was thrilled to see I could get an album of her work - I only wish there was more, but she died an early death and I gather there isn't much of her music being published at this time. This album is really good.

Too Smart-Alecky For Their Own Good.......2006-07-26

Technically Rita Lee's second solo album, this is really Os Mutantes' fourth and final album. Both Baptista brothers are playing and singing all over it, and one of them produced it. The Mutantes always had a practical joke-y side to their stuff, but on their first three albums, the shenanigans were an undercurrent, with the strength or their songwriting, the experimental nature of their playing, and Lee's mesmerizing voice, being the central forces of their sound. But this is the album where the hijynx overtake the quality of the material and render them a novelty act. There are war whoops, a song where one of the guys in the band does a kind of Elvis impression, studio banter between songs . . . everything but good material. Still, this IS Rita Lee and the Baptistas, so all is not lost; there are two somewhat worthwhile tracks, the opener and track 9, and even on songs that fall flat, Lee's voice is a pleasure to listen to. Diehard Mutants fans will want to hear this, but nobody else needs it.
