a great Italian pop star.......2002-04-06

Peppino Di Capri was the rage of Italy back in the 60's, and was one of the pioneers in bringing "Il Twist" to the country with his version of Chubby Checker's "Let's Twist Again". If you were in Italy in the early 60's, these songs will bring back many memories, as they were played full blast everywhere one went.

With the exception of track # 1, "L'Amore Viene e Va" which is from '67, all the songs on this CD were recorded between '59 and '64. Peppino's high, clear voice is terrific for his brand of Italian pop, and there are some wonderful songs here...the most well known is perhaps Modugno's "Piove", but my absolute favorite is "Luna Caprese", with it's beautiful melody, and Peppino's plaintive, lovely interpretation.

Other favorites are "Roberta", and "Speedy Gonzales", which is a great example of "Il Twist", and will get you dancing, guaranteed. Odd, and rather likable, is track # 9, "Nustalgia", which is set to the main theme of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake".

Though not all the songs in this collection are A-1, I'm giving it 5 stars for Peppino's unique and polished singing style, that gorgeous "Luna Caprese", and all the memories of bella Italia in the 60's...which are, like those famous ads on TV say, priceless.
