5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06

Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.

You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:

- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér

Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.

As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.

1 out of 5 stars Will not buy this.......2007-03-16

I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-12-19

One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19

Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.

1 out of 5 stars Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14

This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

4 out of 5 stars A tribute which rivals the masters.......1999-07-20

The Comedian Harmonists were a German a capella group who specialised in mimicking instruments with their voices, and did so with such grace and style in the thirties that their cover verions rivalled the originals...at least in their home market. Because most of them were Jewish, they fled to the USA, where five of them provided the voices to the Seven Dwarfs in Disney's "Snow White"...the remaining two refused to leave (or returned to) Germany where they met the inevitable fate. The Kings Singers recorded this tribute in the seventies (I think) and apparently had the remaining mebers of the group in tears when they heard it. If you've ever heard the Harmonists in their original lo-fi version, this is a must in hi-fi. Their version of Tea for Two is impeccable, and the Wochenend und Sonnenschein is a gem. Get it if you're a fan of the original.

4 out of 5 stars Creative choices and tight syncopation........1999-03-13

I know nothing of the Comedian Hamonists other than what's written in the album notes. They must have been quite an outfit. The King's Singers here are tight and well directed. The Flight of the Bumble Bee is a hoot. Night and Day never sounded so lovely and although I do not speak German, I found the German language numbers interesting to listen to.

The Flying Dutchman is one of the most accessible of Wagner's works, and though it is the first of his operas that earned a permanent place in the repertory, it still possesses many aspects of conventional operatic practice, as well as a Weberian leitmotiv structure much simpler than that exhibited in Wagner's music after Tristan. Surprisingly, despite its accessibility, recordings of the work that are not deficient on technical or vocal or musical grounds seem to be in comparatively short supply. An exception is this classic CSO-Solti effort dating from the late '70s, where the sound is reasonably up to date, and the casting ranges from good to excellent. Of all recordings of this Wagnerian milestone, Solti's interpertation of this score still seems most authoritative. --Christian C. Rix

4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to Wagner's first "big" opera.......2007-01-20

I am quite surprised by the fact that this set never got more reviews than it did on Amazon: the only one applies to the non-remastered version of the performance. I remember learning my Wagner with this performance a good twenty years ago now and I was quite worried about purchasing the set again with "the new sound" and do a trip back down memory lane...in most cases, one is disappointed by the results but hopefully not here. The second the Chicago Symphony Orchestra starts with the opening chords of the piece, you are caught in the eye of the storm: the tempest, the fear, the waves jumping at your speakers, it's all in there. The dynamics are ENORMOUS, Solti relishes in letting the sound of this beautiful orchestra spread in all the sound space. Overall the fantastic orchestral display I remembered from my youth was here ...and more, thanks to a remastering of the original tapes making the performance even clearer than it was. But Fliegende is not all about being loud. Solti has a very good sense of contrasts and can let its orchestra breathe: listen to the clarinets in the Eric-Senta duet in Act II: simply beautiful.
Was the cast up to the really good memories of my youth? Well yes and no!
Norman Bailey, brilliant British heldenbass, is not at ease as the Hollander here. His initial monologue is buried under Solti's thankless orchestra, his German is not well articulated and his high notes clearly come from the throat...His duet with Senta in Act II is nonetheless very good and his portrayal remains acceptable. Talvela is very lazy in this recording and the Finnish bass simply turns up with his marvellous voice without trying anything. His sound remains sumptuous though!
The rest of the cast is really good: Rene Kollo portrays a youthful, noble Erik, Janis Martin is simply put an amazing Senta. She inhabits the part with her beautiful, crystal-clear voice and her portrayal of Senta is still, twenty years after and a lot of Wagner down the road, one of the best I have heard. Krenn is an elegant Mozartian pilot and Isola Jones does the job as Mary, no more no less. The Chicago Symphony Chorus is a bit stale though and doesn't really hold its rank opposite such a demonic orchestra. Regardless of these minor flaws, this Fliegende represents a perfect introduction to the piece thanks to its Senta, Sir Georg and his fabulous orchestra. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Recording of a Great Opera.......2004-07-03

In the 1950's and 60's, there were a number of books that were published about opera in general. The books were readily available at the Boston Public Library, and I found them of great value when I first began collecting recordings. One of the sources (I do not recall which) suggested HOLLANDER as a good first Wagner opera. The reason why HOLLANDER was a good beginning opera is that it is a precursor of the style Wagner would later perfect in works such as TRISTAN UN ISOLDE and The Ring. So it would serve as an introduction. It also had recognizable arias and chorus like that of Italian opera, so the novice Wagnerian would not be too frightened of the composers more serious fare. Well, I took the advice and HOLLANDER was my first official Wagnerian opera. I did not find it all that similar to Italian opera, but I did grow to love the work on its own terms and it did lead me to a love of Wagner's other masterpieces.

This particular set was a good first choice, due in no small part to its conductor Sir George Solti. Solti's contributions to both the symphonic and operatic repertoire are legendary, and in this set he is conducting his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra. What shines most in this recording is the orchestra. Wagner's works need a conductor who can produce a large powerful sound one moment and beautiful softer tones the next. Solti more than manages to handle the orchestra. Beginning with the powerful overture and continuing throughout the recording, Solti has full command of the orchestra. The Chicago Symphony Chorus under the direction of longtime collaborator Margaret Hillis handles the choral parts with technical skill and vocal beauty. The principal singers in the work: Norman Bailey as the Dutchman, Rene Kollo as Erik, and Janis Martin as Senta are not the greatest interpreters of these roles, yet each does a reasonably good job in their respective roles. Kollo does seem a bit weak at times, but the role of Erik is not one of Wagner's greatest tenor roles.

If you are a fan of the golden days of Wagner, this recording is probably not for you. The principals are not the quality of a George London, Kirtsen Flagstad or Lauritz Melchoir. Still, this is a solid recording of the work and one that does, serve as an excellent introduction to the works of Wagner.
