If you are looking for Os Novos Baianos, be careful, because they are not !
Some kind of a comic Brazilian group, not too bad but less than mediocre.

    Album Description

Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801) was one of the most important and successful Italian composers of the eighteenth century, with a considerable international reputation. Among his admirers were Goethe and Stendhal, the latter saying of Il matrimonio segreto that "None of the women I have enjoyed gave me such a delightful, careless moment." Cimarosa beat out Mozart for the post of court music director in Vienna, and at the height of his fame, Il matrimonio segreto became his greatest success. Emperor Leopold II was so taken with the opera that he invited Cimarosa and the cast to dine with him after the premiere, and then to return to the theater and repeat it all over again! Today, Il matrimonio segreto is one of the few comic operas to look back on an uninterrupted performance tradition of over 200 years.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Cima-no-va..........2005-10-02

This is the worst excuse for an opera recording I've ever heard. The singers are horribly out of tune, the strings aren't together, and there is no english translation in the liner notes.

3 out of 5 stars the music deserves better.......2000-03-14

The attached program notes aren't very informative, but this recording seems to have been made at a live performance, which explains the occasional knocks and thuds. And the accoustics aren't great; the music often is unclear and distant. Washroom echoes. The singing is weak; here and there you may be reminded of mewing kittens. That said, the opera is wonderful, tuneful, gracious, and fun. I'd pass on this performance. The music deserves better. About 20 years ago DGG & Daniel Barenboim did a much better Matrimonio . Hope for for a re-release.

5 out of 5 stars Suave, improvisatory, inexhaustibly dynamic.......2000-05-11

These performances have the highest musical quality in common with Flamenco and with jazz: it sounds as if somebody just turned on the microphone and then the guy makes up the most fantastic stuff before our very ears, in the heat of the moment. This is not any mere pretty noodling we're talking about, either. These are performances that make Scarlatti sound like an endlessly inventive genius (which, duh, he was). Every moment has its own meaning. We don't know what's going to happen next, and the fun of the piece is seeing where it goes. Interpretively, this is Scarlatti coming in from the tradition of Frescobaldi's and Froberger's toccatas: the notation is only the barest sketch of how it's really supposed to go.

Baiano's approach to rhythm is loose, to put it mildly. Sometimes he first tries out a new (quasi-improvised) pattern slowly before he builds on it; this certainly helps the listener pick out what's going on in there. Tempos range from daringly slow to astonishingly fast, sometimes from measure to measure. Repeated sections don't have to be in the same tempo as they were the first time, or even sound like the same piece. At the same time, it's clear that Baiano has thought beforehand about where he wants these pieces to go, at least in general, and he is able to make the compositional structures clear. Then at the surface level, whatever happens happens.

Baiano plays his trapeze act without the net: he is obviously confident that anything he tries in the moment is going to be musically satisfying. And he's right. So he goes ahead and takes more chances than seem humanly possible, and it pays off.

There are probably people who will hate this approach, if they prefer their Scarlatti in pretty little boxes. If you are one of those people who think music must be orderly and predictable to be good, please go choose someone else's Scarlatti disc where the only surprise might be a couple of improvised ornamental notes in a repeat.

But if you love a roller coaster ride, this is for you. You'll never hear Scarlatti the same way afterward. And pick up some more Paco Pena discs too while you're at it.

(If you've already heard any of Baiano's other recordings, you probably haven't bothered to read this far. His discs are self-recommending if you like this approach to music.)
