Beausoleil may have originated as Cajun purists, but Cajun music itself has always been a rich, creolized mixture combining Southern country and folk music with traditional songs from France's Brittany region. Revealing the band's own increasingly wide-ranging stylistic borrowings over the course of the 15-year period it encompasses, Bayou Deluxe includes everything from raving remakes of some early material ("Le Jig Français") to a mazurka from the Seychelles ("Chez Seychelles") to a French duet with Richard Thompson ("Sur le Pont de Lyon"). It also includes plenty of the incandescent two-steps and waltzes, as well as a heartbreaking ballad or two. --Richard Gehr
Customer Reviews:
excellent Cajun group.......2007-03-08
Excellent intro to cajun songs or a good addition to a mardi-gras party . They have lively and upbeat music with one of my favorite:"travailler c'est trop dur".
Good listening music.......2007-01-03
I bought this for a Cajun dinner party. It provided a good background of Cajun music with some variety without being "over the top". I have since listened to it as part of a mix of music via random selection on my CD player and have enjoyed it that way as well.
My First "True" Cajun CD.......2006-03-22
I listened to, and subsequently purchased this recording after reading another Amazon reviewer's review of a contemporary Zydeco CD. The reviewer said that he/she liked the Zydeco recording, but ordinarily preferred traditional Cajun music, such as that of Michael Doucet. This is great--wonderful upbeat tunes with great vocals. It's fun to try to decipher the lyrics, and it reminds me of learning to read Shakespeare for the first time. Once you get used to it, it's fairly easy. If you're a fan of the various Zydeco groups and haven't yet discovered Doucet, check it out.
An Excellent CD To Introduce People To Beausoleil.......2005-11-23
Beausoleil has cranked out many albums over their existence. This particular album encompasses a fifteen year period in which we see them grow from traditional rebels to modern masters of mixing genres. You'll hear a little bit of everything on this disc. From heavy French and Caribbean influence to good time rock, Beausoleil ties it all together nicely with the fiddle play of Michael Doucet. I've personally dubbed his style "lazy fiddle," and I have no intentions of that sounding derogatory. I love to listen to Doucet bend and peel notes off of his fiddle.
Some of my favorite tunes on this album are "Le Jig Francais," "Travallier, C'est Trop Dur," and "Je M'Endors." Everything else here is also very wonderful.
This band is one of the best modern Cajun groups around, but don't expect them to stick to the standards. They often tear off into uncharted territory with their music, and for that, I have to commend them. They've managed to keep an artform alive that seems to fade quicker as the years go by. Luckily, they have managed to introduce the younger folks to the roots of our culture and have cultivated quite the interest in these older masters such as Dennis McGee and the Balfa Brothers.
Introduce Cajun music to your friends via this album, but be sure to back it up with the aforementioned legends and greats such as Nathan Abshire and Joe Falcon and throw in some of the younger acts such as the Lost Bayou Ramblers and Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys. It won't hurt to put in a little Creole flavor with Amede Ardoin and Canray Fontenot, either.
Highly recommended.
Ex took CD, this is my second.......2002-04-19
Ever since I saw Belizaire the Cajun and fell in love with Armand Assante, I have been in love with Beausoleil/Michael Ducet. The Music is wonderfully Cajun and my favoriet songs from other soundtracks are on this CD. When I lost it to my ex I knew I was going to have to get another because of all the wonderful music. I never thought I would fall in love with a style of music like Cajun, but Doucet is the best by far. True Cajun stylings and the French Canadien lyrics make this CD the best of all the Beausoleil compilation CDs. I have others....I probably will own more. A must buy for someone looking to dip their musical ears into something as unique as Cajun.

This is a mello sound, as zydeco goes. I'm replacing my first purchase that wore out. My particular favorite is Tupelo Honey. It is so sweet, it can make you weep. The track also has some faster paced songs, which are enjoyable as well.

Leroux Roux.......2003-12-29
Leroux is the best band of all time. I saw them personally at City Stages in Bham,AL this year and they rocked my entire face off. I think they are the most underrated band of all time. I say they should go on a reunion tour. If they hadn't broken up they could have gone down in history as the greatest band of he universe.
The Most Exciting Music You Will Ever Hear.......2003-01-30
As a music fan with hundreds of CD from a wide range of artists, I must admit that this is my favorite album of all time, one that I never tire of playing. It's the kind of music that gets better each time you hear it. This prolific group is perhaps the most underated band ever to record on a major label. As they toured hard, dancing outside of superstardom in the late 70's and early 80's, they wrote, produced, and recorded an incredible catalog of music that ran the gamut from cajun rock, to pop, to soaring power metal/wall of sound ballads - all of it full of intelligent lyrics, melodic bass lines, crisp guitar licks, and some of the best three part harmonies ever put to tape. The musicianship is unmatched. Although Capitol and RCA have been reluctant to re-release the four original gems that are collecting dust in their vaults, you can relive the excitement with this collection, which has excellent production values, thanks to the quality of the original recordings, and Razor & Tie's great digital transfer. Further collections are available at laleroux.com. Regardless of your tastes in music, I think you will be impressed, if not amazed.
Always a Bridesmaid.......2002-06-25
LeRoux was and still is an excellent band. Over the past few years, almost all of their individual albums have also been released on CD. (You just have to work a bit to find them...small releases on small labels. The last unreleased on CD album, "Keep The Fire Burnin'" arrives on CD for the first time in July 2002!) For all but the most ardent fans, like myself, this compilation is the best. It's an excellent sampler of a band that spent years supporting a number of major touring acts, but never seemed to ascend to the limelight themselves. In my humble opinion, the only glaring omission from this collection is "Mystery" from the 1980 album "Up", but beyond that this is an excellent and very representative collection.
Not all of their best...but close.......2000-02-22
For those of us in the South who loved their music, this collection simply teases us. It is too bad the origional 2 albums are not available on CD, because they were fabulous! Too bad LP's don't last forever, since mine are over 20 years old, and they sound like it. For those who love this band, this is all that is left, and this CD was wonderful. For those who remember the origional LP's, this collection falls short of representing a fabulous band with incomparable talent. We miss you Jeff Pollard.
Le Roux lives on.......1998-07-24
These songs are still being played in New Orleans, La in clubs. After all these years New Orleans Lady is still requested at the famous Pat O'Briens Piano Bar on Burbon Street. All around south Louisiana you can hear the sweet sounds on LeRoux.

Once billed as "the future of zydeco," Terrance Simien is the player who introduced unpredictability and limitless energy into the genre. Like all the leading players of this jumpy, good-time south Louisiana music, Terrance plays accordion. Unlike many zydeco leaders, however, Simien is an excellent singer and a frenetic performer. Here on his debut album, he blends flavorful originals like "Zydeco Zambada" and the title cut with a couple of unlikely covers: Peter Tosh's "Stop the Train" and A. P. Carter's country standard, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." Overall, a high-octane breed of an already energetic music. --Robert Baird

The first time I saw Terrance and the boys they had just put out this CD. They would come and play twice a year at a little bar here in our town and we would actually "ROCK THE HOUSE" Still cannot believe that the floor never fell in! It is a great album and a must have for anyone who loves Zydeco or a great dance album. It will make you get up and move and every song on the CD is great. Add this one to your collection today!

Customer Reviews:
This is the real deal folks!!!.......2006-12-01
If you are not from South Louisiana and want to hear some great Cajun music, you need not look any further than these guys. You can sense a real direction and purpose to their music. So melodic and true to their form...how can you not love them! And if you are lucky enough to catch them live, put on your dancing shoes, grab a beer and you will pass a good time on the bayou. The Lost Bayou Ramblers have won a place as my favorite Cajun band from around these parts.
Authentic Cajun music with energy & a smile.......2006-05-24
Just caught these guys last week-end in Tampa at The Tropical HeatWave music festival and can testify that they had the entire Ballroom in a joyous frenzy. Their energy is electric and the music authentic. Seeing them live should be a sure-shot goal if you have the chance; but their music transcends the visual and will get to you by the end of the first cut. Louie Michot is the real deal when it comes to fiddle playing and his energy sparks the talent & enthusiasm of the rest of the boys (two of whom are his brothers). If you have a heart for a great Cajun, you wont regret buying without being able to sample. Go for it & share it with your friends.
A Bridge To Yesterday.......2005-11-20
While many modern Cajun bands emphasize gimmicky tunes and meld multiple genres in order to generate success(think Wayne Toups), the Lost Bayou Ramblers stand firmly against the tide by playing tunes that sound just as comfortable in the modern world as they would in the days of such greats as the Balfa Brothers, Nathan Abshire, and Joe Falcon. In fact, I'll stick my neck out and say that the Lost Bayou Ramblers are probably the best modern Cajun group around these days.
They sound great on tunes like "Moi J'Connais Pas" and "Raine Stomp." Also, tunes like "Louisiana Boogie Woogie" let you know that the Michot brothers know where they came from AND where they are going. This album is perfect for anyone longing to hear music from the good ol' days. I have no problem playing this for my father, because I know he won't be hearing a sell out artist when he hears these guys play.
My favorite tunes on this album are "Holly Beach" and "Tu Peut Cogner." I'm sure you'll love this album as well. Highly recommended, and I can't forget to mention the wonderful liner notes supplied on this disc by one Ryan A. Brasseaux. He manages to give you an expertly written introduction to the Ramblers and a little bit of a history lesson. All around, this is one good album.
Unbelievable! .......2005-10-30
My wife and I first saw the Lost Bayou Ramblers completely by accident, and what a lucky accident! We were attending a festival in Lafayette La. and took a break at a local coffee shop - "Mellow Joy Coffee". These guys were playing right in the store and got the whole place dancing! It was incredible fun and these guys are quite the showmen! It turns out the next day they played the big stage at the festival, but sadly, we were back in New Orleans by then. When we got home to NY we purchased the CD and for almost a year now, I play it once or twice a week. Like a previous reviewer basically stated, this CD is an instant "mood improver"! Get it and you will not be disappointed! Better yet, see them in person if you can, their schedule is on LostBayouRamblers.com
Magnifique! .......2005-10-13
I got this cd last year when their tour took them through NYC and Brooklyn. I've never tired of it! This year, I got their new cd Bayou Perdu when their tour brought them back through our area. Another amazing cd! If you ever get the chance to see these guys in person, do it! Their energy is amazing - especially when they start dancing on the tables! Buy this cd - you'll not regret it.

But Officer, I never speed...it was the music that made me.........2000-09-14
What a wonderful album this is. This was the first BeauSoleil album that I bought. It was my introduction to the band years ago. Since that time, this album (I've got copies on vinyl, cassette, and CD) hasn't been far out of reach. It is upbeat to say the least. Listen in your car at your own risk because you'll end up driving 103.
This album seems to me to be typical BeauSoleil. They take traditional Cajun and Zydeco songs and sounds and turn them into an art form all their own. Michael Doucet's fiddle and vocal style are manic and expressive. David Doucet's guitar is nothing less than incredible. BeauSoleil's songs always seem to have so much going on all at once. That is not a bad thing because you can hear something different every time you listen.
This album is good fun. I dare you to buy it, listen to it, and sit still.

Here is where the Chenier legend began. This disc contains the 12 Bumps Blackwell-produced tracks Clifton cut in 1955 in Los Angeles for Specialty Records. On tracks like "The Cat's Dreamin'" or his first hit single, "Ay 'Tète Fey" (which is the Cajun-French form of its better-known title, "Eh, Petite Fille" meaning "Hey, Little Girl"), Chenier's amalgam of blues, R&B, and rock & roll mixed with traditional French dance tunes is still rough but already has the power and drive that he (and his accordion) would later hone to a fine edge. Instrumental greats and mainstays of Chenier's early road bands like tenor saxman Lionel Prevost and guitarist Lonesome Sundown add their considerable talents to these sessions. The starting point for any comprehensive Chenier collection. --Robert Baird
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-04-15
Truly a great disc. This is the blues, but unlike any blues you've heard before. My only complaint is its too short.
King of the Bayou Blues.......2002-09-06
In this 1955 session, Clifton Chenier and his Zodico Ramblers laid down track after track of greasy, back-beat shuffles and boogies for the Specialty Record Label. Rolling instrumentals like "Boppin' the Rock," "Zodico Stomp" and "Opelousas Hop" demonstrate Chenier's masterful touch and wonderful delivery on the accordion, an instrument not normally associated with the blues; that said, this recording is unmistakably a blues record.
Ironically, one of the most interesting elements of this recording has little to do with music. "Eh, Petite Fille," offers listeners an example Creole. Creole is a blending of two or more pidgin (simplified) languages resulting in the synthesis of language that is adopted as the "mother tongue" by a group of people. Creole languages are spoken all over the world but the blend of French, English, and several African dialects merged in Louisiana to create a uniquely American language.
"Bayou Blues" is an entertaining record that often belies the outstanding musicianship of Chenier and his Zodico Ramblers. While Clifton Chenier may not have been the "King of the South" as he proclaimed, he certainly was the King of the Bayou Blues.
