Before you decide to say "no thanks" to music written by anonymous composers on the island of Cyprus in the early 15th century, just wait one minute. Forget the historical references and consider these vocal and instrumental works as music that can be loved first for its pure and uplifting sonorities. When you hear the perfect blend of instruments (vielles, lute, slide trumpet) and voices (countertenor, tenor, and mezzo-soprano), you'll find yourself drawn into a very pleasant adventure that musically isn't as far afield as you might expect. Beginning with the occupation of Cyprus by Richard the Lion Hearted in 1198, a procession of Western rulers and visitors brought polyphonic music to the island. A manuscript now residing in Turin, but written in early 15th-century Cyprus, is the source for the pieces performed on this disc. The variety and quality of the music is astonishing--well worth an extended visit. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

Inspired music.......2005-09-27
Perhaps one of the reasons for this neglect is political - Cyrpus was a Western outpost during the Crusades; hence, the culture of Cyprus has been influenced by outsiders heavily. The nation of Cyprus still is split between Greek and Turkish communities. The island of Cyprus was at one time a Knights Templar possession, given over to the last King of Jerusalem, and became a Francophile kingdom until the fifteenth century. Because of these close connections with France, the rulers often travelled to the European continent, and brought back both an appreciation for and performers of western musical styles that in turn took root and blossomed into local products such as the compositions recorded here.
The codex in Turin consists of full masses, offices of St. Hylarion and St. Anne, plainsong pieces, mass pieces such as glorias, credos, and more. There are motets, vierlais, rondeaux, and over a hundred ballades. Ths music on this disc is a representative sample of both the secular and sacred pieces.
The performers are the Ensemble Pro Ars Nova. According to their website, 'Ensemble Project Ars Nova, known popularly as Ensemble PAN, takes its name and its sense of spirit from Philippe de Vitry's 14th century musical treatise "Ars Nova" (The New Art). Founded at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, by young American artists Laurie Monahan (mezzo-soprano), Michael Collver (countertenor and corno muto) and Crawford Young (lute), the Ensemble debuted at the Festival Estival in Paris in 1982. At its American debut at the Castle Hill Festival in 1984, Shira Kammen (bowed strings) and John Fleagle (tenor and medieval harp) joined the group.' In addition to these members, they have guest performers Peter Becker (tenor), Karen Clark-Young (mezzosoprano), Randall Cook (vielle), Steven Lundahl (slide trumpet), and Margaret Raines (mezzosoprano). This disc was recorded in 1991, during the Ensemble's residency in the Boston area on a grant.
The clarity, the vibrancy, the depth and beauty in the music and in the performances perfectly match to give a strong, memorable experience.

Valuable Repertoire Extension, Intimate Chamber Setting.......2007-01-27
Performed by Danièle Forget, soprano, and L'Ensemble Arion (Claire Guimond, baroque flute; Chantal Rémillard, baroque violin [Mariani, 1650], Betsy MacMillan, viola da gamba; Hank Knox, harpsichord).
Recorded in July 1994 at L'Eglise Saint-Joseph de Rivière-des-Prairies (Canada). Published by Analekta Fleur de Lys als FL 2 3018. Total time: 69'34".
The Canadian ensemble Arion has done a great deal over the past 20 years or so to rescue some lovely pieces of French baroque music from undeserved oblivion. This CD is one of their earlier attempts, and although I shall, for reasons which will become apparent, only be awarding it a three-star evaluation, it must nevertheless be seen as one of a series of very valuable recordings, all of which are worth possessing if you are prepared to go against the widespread prejudice against the French baroque and really listen to the music here presented. In this instance, we hear four chamber cantatas for solo soprano voice, accompanied by the instruments detailed above, repertoire that until relatively recently was only heard extremely rarely, if at all.
Campra's "Arion" and Montéclair's "Pan et Syrinx" are still rare gems, and if you want to hear them, you will (to the best of my limited knowledge) have no alternative but this CD, which offers pleasing performances in an intimate chamber setting. Soloist Danièle Forget has a clear, pure soprano voice and is obviously familiar with the pitfalls of singing in French; she tends perhaps to err on the side of sweetness and to downplay the dramatic elements in these cantatas, her relatively small voice not being brought forward by the engineers, so that while listening I often found myself concentrating more on the delicious sounds of Claire Guimond's flute and Chantal Rémillard's baroque violin than on the vocals. To follow all the ins and outs of these delicate pieces, you need to be able to study the texts. Analekta have printed these in the original French without any attempt at a translation and in very small print that forces someone of my age to use a magnifying glass to read it.
The two wonderful cantatas by Clérambault were recorded a second time in spring of 1996 by French soprano Sandrine Piau and six instrumental soloists of the Concert Spirituel (Naxos 8.553744). A comparison of the two recordings (the Naxos also contains some of Clérambault's instrumental music) causes me to come down very much in favour of the later and, unbelievably, cheaper CD: Sandrine Piau has a stronger voice, better able to enforce the dramatic content of these "mini-operas"; the tempi are a little faster; and the engineering quality is considerably better, giving a wider panorama and a better balance. Also, Naxos provide an English translation of the text and some informative notes on Clérambault's life, background and works (compared to the more philosophical treatise published by Analekta). The harpsichord suite on the Naxos recording is beautifully done by Blandine Rannou, whose recordings for ZigZag Territoires have been winning her great acclaim in early music circles.
All in all, I would say that the Forget/Arion is an interesting project, but that if you can do without the Campra and the Montéclair and are prepared to concentrate on Clérambault, you have no option but to go for the Piau on Naxos.

Product Description
Robert de Cormier, a graduate of Juilliard, acted as music director of the New York Choral Society for seventeen years. His other conducting engagements have taken him from Broadway and opera to the Berkshire Choral Institute, the Zimriya World Assembly of Choirs in Israel and numerous tours throughout the United States and Europe with the famed Robert de Cormier Singers. He has also been musical arranger and director for Harry Belafonte and Peter, Paul and Mary. In 2000 he established Counterpoint, an eleven-voice vocal ensemble based in Vermont. Here they sing a beautiful collection of carols covering many periods and cultures, celebrating the holiday season in truly memorable fashion. Counterpoint is also featured on two other Albany releases: When the Rabbi Danced (TROY676) and Missa Criolla (TROY746).Customer Reviews:

I Did, and I'm Glad!!.......2003-06-27
Pro Organo has issued a stunning CD of wedding music suggestions not just for one denomination, but for Jewish, African, Japanese, Gaelic, Scottish, and those wanting something a little original and fresh. Recorded in the canyonlike Cathedral of St. John the Divine of New York City (before the disastrous fire of 2001 which caused a lot of destruction), organist Dorothy Papadakos, and visiting musicians, have offered "spectacular" collection of organ and brass favorites, as well as some surprising discoveries. It's sonically thrilling, and, as a disc for just listening, I highly recommend it. There are enough pieces that we all know, such as Widor's "Fifth Organ Symphony 'Toccata'" and Gigout's "Grand Chorus in Dialogue" with sprinkles of world music played in a Cathedral known for its diverse musical contents. But Pro Organo and organist Papadakos have uncovered works for klezmer, shakuhachi, bagpipes, voice, and unusual instrumentation to give this disc an entirely different approach to wedding music.
You LOVE it, especially those of you who enjoy trying new recipes, wines, and concert fare. So far, it is one of my very favorite discs. I guess so...I bought two copies! WOW!!
