this is an anthology, a sampler, of what's current in jazz and classical music played by jazz artists. it serves the purpose of familiarizing. however, nothing leaped out and pushed me to want to listen to any of the cd's these selections were first recorded.

Not just another compilation.......2002-01-18

Jazz has about 1,000 compilations per square foot, so it's understandable how this one has gone relatively unheralded. Yet it's one of the finest collections I've seen in years -- it has personality and coherence, and Giddins' choices are never faulty. Most of the major figures are represented, sometimes by obvious choices ("a night in tunisia" for parker/gillespie), sometimes by esoteric ones (billie holiday's "detour ahead", a previously unreleased Basie tune that just smokes). Underrated musicians -- Randy Weston, Don Pullen, Kay Starr -- take their places among the canonized, while avant-garde masters like Coleman and Taylor are given a good deal of room.

It's ultimately a tribute to Giddins' wonderful, catholic tastes. If only he had had more influence on Ken Burns (I think we owe "Jazz's" relatively positive portrait of Ornette entirely to Giddins) than the neocon Marsalis, what a wonder Burns series could have been.

Outstanding overview of the music........1998-11-23

As a stand-alone of as a companion to Giddins' excellent book (of the same title), this compilation offers a terrific overview of the history of Jazz for either the neophyte or the veteran. The collector will want it for the many rare recordings contained within. The spectrum of music is truely astounding -- where else could you hear Jelly Roll Morton, Sinatra, and Cecil Taylor on the same record? Well worth getting.

Based in New Hope, Pennsylvania, the four-piece rock band, Sage, has released their self-titled debut album in April 2003. The double CD set contains eighteen tracks recorded in front of a live audience at SweetCreek studios in Pennsylvania. A double-live disc is an ambitious undertaking for any band, at any stage of its career - let alone as their debut release. However, Sage's self-titled debut shines through admirably and is worth checking out. Each disc is packed with a diverse arrangement of rock, funk, reggae and free-flowing grooves. Sounds too good to be Live!.......2006-08-30

Sage is a great band and this CD definitely shows it. I'd definitely go see them in concert after hearing this. I didn't even realize that the CD was recorded live! Sounds too good to be live. Each song is unique in it's own way with some great jam sessions and songs that make you want to get out of your seat and dance. I actually bought their newest ablum first and liked it so much I had to see what the earlier one was all about. Totally sweet album, definitely worth the money.

Long time fan.......2004-01-29

As as resident of the New Hope area it didn't take me long to dicover this amazing group. I along with many others fans have been waiting patiently for Sage to record an album. It was definitely worth the wait. I couldn't ask for a better album then the one these guys have put together. It shows the true vastness of this band talent and eclectic musical influences. There grooves are filled with an energy that's contagious and they recorded while at there best, live. The world was in dire need of a group thats not afraid to have fun, make you dance, and remind us why we enjoy music so much. We got all that and more with Sage.

Incredible Album.......2004-01-06

I received this album as a gift a few months ago, I'm glad that Amazon has picked it up. It singlehandedly extracted me from a "same old jamband" rut.

These guys are incredibly tight for a debut album. The band truly knows how to have fun, whether playing upbeat feel-good music ("Word Up!", "Away High", "Find My Way"), really letting loose ("Elfin Jam"), or getting the crowd involved ("The Goose"). Tracks like "El Viaje", "Bus Driver", and "Dagobah" demonstrate the intensity this quartet can produce while exuding positive vibes.

As a long-time deadhead, I dare you to not grin from ear to ear when you hear the "Flow -> Texas River" transition, as flawless as the best examples of scarlet/fire or china/rider. There's a certain magical ability for the band to come back together that just gives me chills.

Only at the end of the first disc ("The Goose") does it become aparrent that the album was recorded live. The sound quality and flawless performance create a polished sound that is more reminiscent of an all-star jam session in a posh studio than a debut album.

If you appreciate quality improvosiational rock, with an eclectic mixture of funk, reggae, and groove, you can't go wrong with this well-priced double-disc.
