.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

Album Description

The new issue of Nosferatu contains more than 20 additional minutes of material left off the original release and for the first time appears as the complete soundtrack in the correct running sequence. Nosferatu contains four pieces which rank among the best in the Popol Vuh catalogue, thanks to a serene, mystic, deeply personal stance that basically transposes Hosianna Mantra into gothic music.

All Popol Vuh re-releases are manufactured as high quality collector's series with stickers indicating the bonus tracks. The Digipak spines have a design and when all are put together they form one big picture.

3 out of 5 stars Meditative But Repetitive.......2007-06-12

Popol Vuh is one of the "krautrock" bands I missed when in was in its prime. Now that its back catalogue is being remastered and re-released, the band is receiving renewed critical and listener interest. Recently, I read a review of Nosferatu in an English music magazine that pronounced this to be one of the essential recordings in the Popol Vuh catalogue. Well, perhaps I'd have been happier if I had purchased one of the recordings blessed here with five stars first.
I find Nosferatu an enjoyable CD, deeply meditative but also highly repetitive. Perhaps that is what lends it an entrancing quality. And maybe the repetition is there because this is primarily film music. Certainly, this would not be for everyday listening. But if you just want to relax and withdraw into your inner world, then putting on Nosferatu is a good way to do just that.
I will try out a couple of other Popol Vuh recordings to get a good overall feel for the band. But if this is your first outing with them as it is for me, I suggest you start with a different album unless of course the features I describe here appeal to you.

4 out of 5 stars Graceful and moving.......2006-03-24

Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable album. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist textures. There is also a spiritual quality about it that evokes feelings of loss, sorrow and redemption. Together with the album Until The End Of The World, Nosferatu is my favourite soundtrack of all time. The music is never less than deeply moving, the epitome of grace and elegance.

3 out of 5 stars Bruder des Schattens truncated.......2005-07-20

When I was in 8th grade I saw Herzog's Nosferatu. I ran out and bought the only soundtrack I could find, which turns out to be the inferior "second" soundtrack, reproduced here in full beginning with track 5. I was disappointed that while it did contain the track On the Way (track 13 here), which featured the men's choir motif that is heard over the main credits (and at other points in the film), it was not orchestrated as the film version was, and did not include the lovely acoustic guitar/piano section. Later I found another soundtrack that featured the same movie poster art as this CD, and featured the first four songs on this CD. I preferred that soundtrack much more because it did contain the entire "Bruder des Schattens" which translated into English means "Brothers of Darkness." (The second part of the title, and I am assuming this signifies the acoustic guitar/piano section, is "Sons of Light."

A warning...this CD edits the Brothers of Darkness/Sons of Light" track right after the acoustic guitar and piano begin. The whole thing ought to be about 16 or 17 minutes, and this is only 5:41. It is a real shame. I will tell you that if you really want the entire track, you can buy a wonderful CD entitled Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra, which contains works from two other albums, and does include the entire "Brothers of Darkness/Sons of Light." That is what I did.

Overall this is a good CD and the songs are just as I remember them on the LP. Be aware that if you have seen the film but not heard these soundtracks before, very little of the soundtracks are in the movie. Granted, there are rather lengthy exceptions, but as someone else has pointed out, there is quite a bit of Wagner and Gounod, and many of the Popol Vuh tunes are not used in the movie at all. All in all, however, this is a very good compilation of Popol Vuh's style.

3 out of 5 stars Almost Complete .......2005-06-21

This is currently the most complete soundtrack album to Werner Herzog's 1979 movie remake of "Nosferatu." It has all of Popol Vuh's recordings that are associated with the film, BUT with the exception of the first track "Bruder Des Schattens." The album is also missing some other songs from the film.

On this disc, "Bruder Des Schattens" is an exception because it is not the complete song version. Popol Vuh's CD, "Tantric Songs/Hosianna Mantra," is one cd that features the complete 16 or so minute version of "Bruder Des Schattens." The CD's tracklist may list it as "Brothers of the Shade-Sons of the Light."

Music that ALL soundtrack albums to Herzog's 1979 remake of "Nosferatu" are missing:

"Prelude" from Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold" conducted by George Solti and performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker. The Wiener Philharmoniker is also or perhaps formerly known as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Sanctus" from Charles Gounod's "Messe Solennelle" (ALLEGEDLY the version featured on the cd, "Gounod: Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile; Petite Symphonie for wind instruments." The conductor, Jean-Claude Hartemann, is associated with that cd.)

"Zinskaro" by the Vocal Ensemble Gordela. Song sometimes listed as Tsintsharo, Tshintsharo, Zinzkaro, etc. Group sometimes listed as the Vocal Ansambl Gordela. Both Extremely rare.

A diegetic song performed by a little boy in the film. I'm sorry but I don't know anything else about it. Note: "Diegetic" means sounds picked up by the movie camera during the shooting of a scene.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty Heavy-handed stuff here.......2004-03-04

Again, I think altissimo! is going over the top here with the raw patriotism bit. Sure we should be proud of this country, but there does reach a point where it becomes too much and is embarrassing. That point is reached here with this mixed bag of recordings pulled in from over the place, many already released from Altissimo! before and just re-packaged here. If you don't mind patriotism served with a lot of relish then this CD is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring..........2003-11-07

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but One Nation Under God is a beautiful ode to patriotism and the United States of America. There isn't a clunker in the 20 songs on the album, not surprising considering you get things like Nearer My God to Thee, God Bless America or Amazing Grace. A fantastic job by the various military bands who contributed to this effort!

5 out of 5 stars One nation Under God.......2003-10-30

"One Nation Under God" is a great compilation of inspirational patriotic music, superbly performed by truly world-class musicians.
The selection of music was excellent, and very much in keeping with the title and the theme of the album. The opening recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Thompson, underscored by a most respectful and reverent lead-in to "God of Our Fathers", perfectly set the stage for the well-appointed and majestically performed music that followed.

Several pieces evoked solemn contemplation and reverence, leading to others of pride, majesty and tribute, all arranged and played with proper respect and appropriate to the theme "One Nation Under God".
This is a magnificent and timeless album that will hold a prominent spot in my collection, and be often enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars One Nation Under God.......2003-09-25

This CD is absolutely awesome ! From the opening of God of our Fathers with the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Fred Thompson to the final note of Taps, I could not stop listening. This collection of patriotic and inspirational music is a must for all Americans. As an ex-Navy man and Viet Nam veteran, the strains of The Navy Hymn sent chills up and down my spine. It brought back so many precious memories. This collection of 20 songs is a bargain at any price !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection!! Patriotic Music all on one CD !!!.......2003-09-24

This CD is definately for people who are looking to get some uplifting patriotic music for listening to at home, the office, for parades, barbecues, and ecspecially holidays like the 4th of July. Its got all of America's greatest hits including "The Star Spangled Banner", "Amazing Grace", "America The Beautiful", along with other less well known gems such as "Godspeed", and "Pslam for Band". All of the songs are played excellently by the US Marine, Navy, and Air Force bands. The label that put out this release, Altissimo Records actually specializes in military music, so if you like this check our their other releases. Overall Highly Recommended!!!

This generous selection of songs offers an overview of the wide variety of form, character, and atmosphere of Schumann's lieder, from darkly menacing, dramatic ballads to rapturous expressions of love, magical evocations of nature, and mysterious night pieces. The program includes both familiar favorites such as "Die beiden Grenadiere" and the cycle Liederkreis, and rarities hardly ever performed, such as the Husarenlieder and the three songs of Tragödie, the last a duet. The performances are beyond praise. Bryn Terfel's voice is of incomparable beauty, sonorous as an organ, powerful as an orchestra, yet capable of infinite tenderness, warmth, and delicacy; his technique and breath control are infallible. In "Der Contrabandiste," a bravura piece in a lighter vein, his virtuosity is stunning. It almost seems ungrateful to mention that some of his tempos are extremely slow, that his care for the text sometimes leads to excessive word painting, his operatic background to overdramatization. Fortunately, many songs justify this approach. Malcolm Martineau, a splendid pianist and ideal partner, balances sensitive support with leadership; his preludes and postludes are perfectly paced, organic parts of a whole. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great Bass-Baritone.......2003-04-27

I must say that coming from a fellow bass, Bryn Terfel is everything I want to be and more. His voice has rich tone and a spin like no one that I have heard in quite some time. I can say that this cd has great range of songs that show off his low as well as high range and makes him on of opera and classical music rising stars.
Terfel does a wonderful job on Du bist wie eine Blume one of my favorite art songs as well as Widmung. Terfel has a wonderful sense of the German language and has a great understanding of how to sing it as well as to convey it through these songs. I would recommend his other cds as well because this shows off the classical side of his voice but what makes Terfel good is that he can do Broadway show tunes and then turn right around and do a Wagner aria from "The Flying Duthman." His voice is truly amazing

4 out of 5 stars Great Effort.......2003-01-11

First and foremost, the accompanist, Malcolm Martineau, shines stylistically in this recording. He is very in tune with Bryn's voice and its habits. Bryn Terfel needs to learn a few more tricks or use them less often. He does everything he is capable of in one piece; you might as well stop listening after the first track/lieder because every piece sounds the same. His tone is very beautiful, as always. I've heard Bryn be compared to Fischer-Dieskau, and I have to say that Fischer-Dieskau's recording, although, not as skilled of singer, is much more expressive and in tune with the music. I almost wish that Bryn had copied Fischer-Dieskau's recording. I know that that's horrible, but I would love to hear Dieskau's artistry on a voice like Bryn's. I'm just not surprised anymore when Bryn uses his sotto/mezzo voce in every piece. Don't get me wrong; it's a great trick. BUT it doesn't sound like he is making music with it anymore. He's doing what he thinks is impressive.

4 out of 5 stars Well performed.......2001-06-30

Bryn Terfel's vocal magnetism is present and there are some hair-raising moments, but on the whole there is not much to get excited about. This may have much to do with the depressing nature of the songs. Large voices are generally harder to focus in a recording and his voice is not as focused here as on his earlier Schubert CD. Like before, these interpretations use the extremes of his vocal ability - some may find it too extreme. In my opinion, Terfel by nature is more at home with positive and/or searching characterizations rather than mad ones.

5 out of 5 stars More stars required!.......2000-07-17

As a previous reviewer noted, it's hard to find flaws in Terfel's singing. I found this recording to be like honey - rich, flowing, intense.

Mr. Terfel continues to prove his excellence as a recitalist.

5 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Album.......2000-02-10

It is getting difficult to find flaws in Bryn Terfel's singing. On his new cd, his lush tone brings out the wonderful melodies that Schumann wrote. His performance of the Liederkreis is probably the best I have ever heard. His pronunciation of the German is flawless and unlike some singers he has excellent phrasing. He pays great attention to the text, which is key in Lieder singing. The problem is that some singers tend to forget the text and only concentrate on tone. This should not be and Terfel realizes this. Martineau accompanies him on his third recital disc (not counting those done with the Sain label) and his performance is commendable. This cd is a must have for any fan of lieder.

Graham Johnson's complete Schubert song marathon for Hyperion reached the finishing post recently, but for anyone suffering withdrawal symptoms, the award-winning Schumann song series goes from strength to strength and now reaches its fifth volume with this fine program featuring the warmly lyrical baritone of Christopher Maltman, winner of the Lieder prize at the 1997 Cardiff Singer of the World competition. This disc is devoted to settings of Heine, and on the way to the celebrated Dichterliebe there are 20 songs, including four by Schumann's wife, Clara. There are so many delights to be found here, and the combination of a beautiful voice, Johnson's superbly sensitive playing, and the intimacy of Hyperion's benchmark recorded sound must surely propel this toward an awards ceremony or two. As usual, the disc comes with scholarly but completely accessible notes by Johnson. Sometimes it takes longer to read the notes than listen to the song, but it is always worth it--Johnson's insight is constantly illuminating. The Dichterliebe cycle is an intimate, deeply felt performance, winningly understated, and a great tribute to the intelligent musicality of both performers. It concludes a disc that absolutely bursts with goodies--77 minutes of bliss. --Keith Clarke

4 out of 5 stars Restraint and overdoing it.......2004-02-13

Although the quality of singing and playing is as high as every other endeavour in this project, this is the first recording that feels "padded." The inclusion of two chorus settings--"Die Minnesaenger" and "Die Lotusblume"--not only add little to the concert but actually disrupt the flow for me. There are also four songs by Clara Schumann which don't do much for the whole concert either, especially her trite setting of "Lorelei." Graham Johnson's notes, which I always enjoy tremendously, also felt padded and less witty than usual. This is the first time I felt the desire to be comprehensive overtook the quality of the individual disc.

That said, there are many magnificent recordings here, especially "Belsatzar," "Mein Wagen rollet langsam," "Die beiden Grenadiere," and "Die Lotusblume." Although this DICHTERLIEBE did not replace my favorite (as Johnson's SCHOENE MUELLERIN and WINTERREISE recordings from the Schubert collection did), it's a lovely and ethereal display of restraint and care well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars A substantial overview of Karajan's Ring.......2007-07-11

One could debate for a brief eternity which conductor should be labeled "the best." Numerous magnanimous interpreters come to mind: Gustav Mahler, Arturo Toscanini, Otto Klemperer, Carlos Kleiber, Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, Sir Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Giuseppe Sinopoli, and James Levine are just a potpourri of renowned orchestral masters. Toscanini and Karajan were probably the most influential in redefining the nature in which one should approach a piece of music; both insisted that traditional conducting, in which a piece was essentially performed in the same manner continuously, was neither healthy nor appropriate for the music in question and, they laid the foundation for conductors to develop their own characteristic conducting and interpretative styles.

One now comes to Richard Wagner, often considered the master of Romantic music and one of the definitive composers to ever set foot on the soil of this planet. If one were to painstakingly evaluate the two conductors' collective Wagnerian works, one would most likely come to the conclusion that Hungarian-born Sir Georg Solti was a "more perfect" Wagnerian conductor than the Austrian musical megalomaniac Herbert von Karajan. Solti's style of conducting, which lent itself to the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Mahler, and Richard Strauss, was obviously within the atmosphere of Wagner, and his John Culshaw-produced rendering of Der Ring des Nibelungen can easily be considered one of the greatest achievements in modern recorded sound. Nonetheless, Karajan's brilliance came not from his ability to conduct Wagner perfectly, as one might arguably suggest for Solti, but rather from his ability to approach every composer with a certain level of comfort and singularity while simultaneously retaining his format of interpretation. Karajan was just as comfortable with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as he was with Jean Sibelius and Arnold Schoenberg, and his expertise transcended every medium, from choral works and masses to symphonies to operas to concerti. It was also his singular smoothness, his uncanny ability to gloss and refine the roughest and most vulgar of music (which, occasionally, in a work such as Carmen, had a derogatory effect) which made his Wagnerian music so spectacular a beacon and link within the chain mail of the musical world.

This is the reason why this recording of Der Ring des Nibelungen features what critics have called a "chamber music approach" to the Wagner score; Karajan dissected the music (as he did with everything he conducted) and took every measure to present, at all times, the beauty inherent in the music, even at the most violent and explosive instances. No fault is obvious in this, and with the operas of Rossini or Donizetti, no problem would have occurred; however, with Wagner, placing too burdensome an emphasis on beauty could, possibly, have an acidic effect on the overall drama of the work. This became an almost debilitating fault near the end of his illustrious career, but here the results are stunning. Karajan's interpretation is not sluggish (by the standards set by Solti, it is actually fairly brisk) and the orchestral performance from the imperial Berliner Philharmoniker is beyond betterment.

Thus, one must wonder why this recording of the Ring Cycle, with arguably the best conductor in the world leading one of the finest groups of musicians ever assembled, is frequently dogged by critics as weak and woefully idealistic. The answer lies in Karajan's casting which is, overall, inferior to Solti's. However, jewel-bedecked performances can be found in Karajan's cast with which Solti's cannot compete. Jon Vickers and Gundula Janowitz bring new definition to the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. Operatic roles may have existed which Vickers did not perfect, but those which he performed (Peter Grimes, Samson, Tristan, Aeneas, Otello, Don José) were forever standardized by his interpretation. Siegmund is no exception, and though James King was a golden-toned, amorous youth on the Solti Die Walküre, Vickers is mightily Zarathustran and gloriously introspective during "Winterstürme wichen dem Wonnemond." Janowitz, who could make the harshest, most brutal German phrases drip with the smoothness and creamy elegance of French, brings radiance and gleaming simplicity to her Sieglinde which no other soprano could dare attempt. Their ecstatic, and eventually orgasmic, love duet ("Du bist der Lenz" ... "O süsseste Wonne! Seligstes Weib!" ... "Siegmund, den Wälsung, siehst du, Weib!") may be the greatest moment of Karajan's entire Ring Cycle.

The character of Wotan, the ruler of the gods, should, theoretically, be performed by a commanding, sonorous bass-baritone such as George London, Hans Hotter, Theo Adam, or James Morris, the most superb modern Wagnerian baritone. However, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who was so praised for his vocal delicacy and aristocratic gentility, is surprisingly successful as the ambitious god whose ageless wisdom was blinded by his opulent rapaciousness in Das Rheingold. Fischer-Dieskau was often fussy and blusterous on the operatic stage, but brief instances of vocal waywardness are often excusable through Wagner, and he will have no difficulty pleasing the most caustic critic during his wondrous musing as the gods enter the celestial fortress of Valhalla ("Abendlich strahlt der Sonne Auge...So grüss ich die Burg"). Thomas Stewart, a severely under-recorded American baritone, excels as Wotan in Die Walküre and Siegfried. Wotan's eminent farewell to Brünnhilde in Die Walküre ("Leb wohl, du kühnes, herrliches Kind!...Der Augen leuchtendes Paar") could easily buckle many baritones; Stewart, however, sings with unfettered passion and mournful abandonment as the pained father. He is less thrilling (due to the context of the music, not his voice) in his conjuring of Erda in Siegfried ("Wache, Wala! Wala! Erwach!").

Gerhard Stolze, the consummate character singer, is not featured on this set of highlights as Mime, Alberich's toiling, gnomish brother, in Siegfried; his unique caricature of Loge in Das Rheingold is inserted instead. Loge, the mischievous demigod of fire, is a part usually performed by a heldentenor, such as Wolfgang Windgassen, Set Svanholm, or Siegfried Jerusalem, and for those strictly concerned with vocal beauty, these singers would be highly appropriate. However, for those seeking a more burlesque, stupendously acted performance (merely listen as he warns the gods not to enter Valhalla ["Ihrem Ende eilen sie zu"]), Stolze is perfectly idiomatic and certainly does not "bark" his lines, though he is occasionally criticized for doing so. Hungarian bass-baritone Zoltan Kélémén's career began, for the most part, with Karajan casting him as Alberich. The most inimitable interpreter of the dwarf fiend was Gustav Neidlinger; his Alberich was explosively, thunderously vindictive, a Caligulan nemesis. Kélémén's Alberich was a twisted, grisly deuce, and though he may have lacked the vocal robustness of Neidlinger (and the malignant guffaw), his retort against the mocking of the Rheintöchter ("Der Welt Erbe gewänn ich zu eigen duch dich") is a petrifying outburst. Helen Donath, Edda Moser, and Anna Reynolds are the most perfectly tuned Rheintöchter available on disc. No other trio can compare with their beguiling chatter in the first scene ("Lugt, Schwestern! Die Weckerin lacht in den Grund") nor with their wrathful longing in the finale ("Rheingold! Rheingold! Reines Gold!"). Liselotte Rebmann, Daniza Mastilovic, Ingrid Steger, Lilo Brockhaus, Carlotta Ordassy, Barbro Ericson, Cvetka Ahlin, and Helja Jenckel are similarly victorious during the Walkürnritt ("Hojotoho!"), which is sure to conjure an image of helicopters napalming seaside Vietnamese villages vis-à-vis Francis Ford Coppola or hellish, armed and armor-bedecked maidens soaring about on flying horses.

Josephine Veasey possessed an elegant, matronly tone which was perfectly suited for Fricka, Wotan's bickering wife, the goddess of marriage. Donald Grobe, a Karajan regular, is insipid but secure as Froh in his brief monologue ("Zur Burg führt die Brücke"). Martti Talvela and Karl Ridderbusch (another Karajan regular) shared the four main bass roles in the saga: Fasolt, Fafner, Hunding, and Hagen. Talvela is noted as one of the most sympathetic Fasolts on record; one must wonder how Talvela, the gargantuan Finnish bass, could not be suitable as a giant in any opera. His performance is woefully truncated here, alas. His Hunding, which was surely brutish and bovine, is not heard at all. The iniquitous villain Fafner's greatest moment comes not in Das Rheingold as the bellowing lummox but in Siegfried as the leering, yawning dragon; this is also left out of the collection. Ridderbusch's performance as Hagen, often heralded as one of his finest, is represented here by little more than his final outburst of "Zurück vom Ring!" After Dame Joan Sutherland's "cameo" appearance as the Waldwogel in Sir Georg Solti's Siegfried, all other performances are bound to fall short. Nonetheless, Catherine Gayer is notably lovely and chirpy.

Most criticism concerning the soloists is invested in insulting Jess Thomas, Helga Dernesch, and Helge Brilioth. Thomas, a regal Lohengrin and Tannhäuser in his youth, has forever been the recipient of spiteful banter reviling his performance as Siegfried in the third opera of the cycle. It is true that Windgassen owned the role in much the same way that Birgit Nilsson was the executor of Brünnhilde (after Flagstad and Varnay); however, their performances were sublime in the locality of their vocal precision and dramatic prowess, which were sublime. In the sector of vocal attractiveness (which is, one must concede, Karajan's principal area of focus), Windgassen fell short of the golden-throated Thomas, and Nilsson's steely voice, though it possessed its own rampageous eroticism, was also inferior to Helga Dernesch's richer and milder tone. As examples, Thomas is marvelous during the darkly impressionistic, meandering Waldweben ("Dass der mein Vater nicht ist"); Dernesch is ravishing in the Awakening Scene ("Heil dir, Sonne! Heil dir, Licht! ... Siegfried! Siegfried! Seliger Held!") and in the apocalyptic finale of Götterdämmerung ("Starke Scheite schichtet mir dort...Fliegt heim, ihr Raben!"). Poor Brilioth is often criticized for simply sounding dull and inadequate as Siegfried in Götterdämmerung, and one must concede that it would have been more prudent for Karajan to cast Windgassen. [Régine Crespin, who is not featured on this collection, performed Brünnhilde in Die Walkure. This had mixed results, for most held her performance as the Valkyrie in juxtaposition to her gorgeous interpretation of Sieglinde on the Solti recording. I, personally, found her Brunnhilde delightfully witty and humane.]

Perhaps the greatest fault of this collection of highlights is that it is what it is: a collection of excerpts. Der Ring des Nibelungen is an expansive masterpiece which is not suitable for a two-disc collection of noteworthy tracks. This compilation, nevertheless, is indeed superb (as are most Deutsche Grammophon/Panorama releases), as is the set of highpoints from Karl Böhm's Ring Cycle, released through Philips. One should, by all means, disregard the hateful criticism placed upon Karajan's work here. It is not his finest, but it is Karajan, and his worst level is a pinnacle of excellence which most conductors can only hope to achieve, particularly in a Wagnerian sphere.

5 out of 5 stars Where is Karajan's Ring on amazon?.......2005-09-05

I can't find any of the four Ring operas here at amazon.com. This is very peculiar, but in case you, too, are looking for them, I can say that the Rheingold and Die Walkure are superb, but the Siegfried is vocally a catastrophe, beginning with the woeful Jess Thomas in the title role, and the Gotterdammerung is hampered by an inedequate Siegfried and a not veyr inspired dernesch as Brunnhilde. DG has remastered them all at mid-price, and the mid-Sixties analog sound was good to begin with.

3 out of 5 stars not an introduction to The Ring.......2005-04-18

This is absolutely the best "highlight" collection out there -- no others come close to the range and depth of material provided. But beware, this is not an "introduction to The Ring", as some claim -- the notes are skimpy, the titles of the excerpts are untranslated, there is no libretto, no description of the excerpts -- their context or meaning -- so what you have is a great summary of the works -- one that is most useful if you already know them -- something to take along with you in the car or while jogging or walking the dog to remind you of the real thing. Bear in mind that whatever the deficiencies of this collection, the others have the same faults also.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction, or a new experience.......2004-02-14

Admittedly, it is a daunting task to try to "get into" opera, and even more so with Wagner's Ring. This CD is perfect for the beginner and the more experienced listener for various reasons. First of all, it spoils you somewhat in presenting you with the best pieces of the various operas. These "bleeding chunks" certainly give you a wonderful introduction to the various motifs, and most importantly, are very long pieces. The CD manages to capture several of the different flavors present in Wagner's opera.

Secondly, the CD is worth its price mainly due to Karajan's conducting. After listening to Solti's version of the Ring (also wonderful), I was suprised by the subtle hints he seems to charge through. You can literally hear the galloping of the horse, or subtle musical hints which add a great appreciation and character to the opera. Thus, if you have experienced several other conductors, but have not had the pleasure of Karajan, it would be worth the price.

Unfortunatly, some of the singing is kinda weak. Again, after Solti's Valkyries, you will have a hard time getting into the singing. And again, Karajan's Brunhilde isn't as strong as Solti's, but she still holds her own. Loge, here, sounds like a trickster (though he does sing/speak his words), and the Wotan's are alright.

In conclusion, this is perfect if you want to add flavor to your Wagner listening experience, or just want to know what the big deal is. I, of course, suggest getting one of the DVD's to get the big picture of what is going on (Levine's MET is a good start). So buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars good introduction.......2002-06-11

this is a good way to see why it is worth getting the full Der Ring opera--all 15 CDs! having just the highlights shows you the power and majesty of Wagner's music, but skips the depth and true emotion you get out of listening to the whole opera.

This is a fabulous recording done back in 1969 in West Germany. The London Symphony Orchestra plays Mozart with impeccable taste and precision while the amazing voices of Werner Krenn and Tom Krause serenade you with a beautiful operatic rendition of Mozart's famous Masonic pieces. This is a must have for any classical, opera, or Masonic music lover!
