5 out of 5 stars The Voice Transcendant.......2005-09-26

Only a listen to this incredible and sublime collection with convince noise-weary ears and world-heavy souls of the healing power of the human voice.

I would love to hear a collection of this type which featured the voices of African women like Angelique Kidjo and Miriam Makeba.

Get it. You'll revisit it over and over.

    5 out of 5 stars Profound sound........2004-02-28

Ive had this album for four years, I still listen to it on A weekly basis and never tire of it.It's very soul stirring, the first of the songs kothbiro is the most haunting of all of them.Dala and ondiek are my next favourites.
It's a wonderful album to have when life gets very chaotic and busy,it stops you right in your tracks.Highly reccommended as an introduction to the very wide scope of african music.

    5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2004-01-25

I heard this CD when visiting Bogota. I walked into a gallery of the local artists and the music captured my soul. I was so moved by the melodies, I had to find out the title of the CD. The music is transcendent. My favorites are Kothbiro, Ondiek and Sutu Kun, and the invigorating, rythmic Ekbobo. But the best has to be the Wasuze Otya track with the laughter of the singers at the end of the track; you can sense their joy in their songs. The music is so uplifting and premeates with a positive feeling -- you can tell that the singers feel joy in living, and in life through the range of wonderful music; you want to go to their land, and be in their space. Wonderful!!! A must have!!!

    Album Description

The heart of blues folklore lies in the music of Otis Taylor, long-established as the voice of American blues history. His intensity is matched only by his superb songwriting and mastery of guitar and banjo. Taylor's topical songs are rooted in the African-American past but are universal stories; they speak of poverty, pride, love and the struggle for justice.

5 out of 5 stars Otis tells the Truth.......2003-12-04

This is about testimony, people, and you will not turn your back and say, "That's not my problem." It's about legacies...of violence, pain, hate, suffering...in the name of heritage; in the name of raw apathy...in the name of ignorance. In Otis Taylor's big hands, plucking and strumming on an electric banjo, mandolin, or acoustic guitar, it's a way to cry out for justice-and mercy and forgiveness. They don't make prophets like this anymore-they did once upon a time, but that was back in biblical days. If there was a reason to listen to this man's songs, it's because he wears the dust of history on his physical body and within his heart, and along with that, the crimes of passion that have been done in the name of righteous intention.

These songs are about commitment: a way to remind us that we have choices to make in our lives, both individually and as a social unit. The actions that we make can come back with a sword or an olive branch-and thankfully, Otis has a gentle way with his power, especially from a man who can stare into your soul from the cover photo of White African. His companions are right beside him like avenging angels: Kenny Passarelli's thudding, plodding bass, holding the chains and shackles of generations, daughter Cassie Taylor's ghostly backup vocals that moan through the leaves on the trees on a hot moonless night, and Eddie Turner's tortured slide and lead guitar. Yes, the obvious comparison is to John Lee Hooker-but Otis's strength is that he's doing it his way. You'll feel it too, once Otis lays his music on you.

3 out of 5 stars Good guitar, great voice, so so material.......2003-07-27

I bought this cd for the song, My Soul's in Louisiana. None of the others quite measured up. On the bright side, though, this one song was worth the price of the whole cd.

5 out of 5 stars Indescribable, Haunting, and Perfect!.......2003-05-24

I had the great fortune of recently meeting Kenny Passarelli, Otis Taylor's producer and bass player. After a fascinating stroll down rock & roll memory lane recounting Kenny's storied career as a musician (Mannassas, Joe Walsh, Elton John, et al), Kenny mentioned his new ventures in producing. "White African" was a parting gift from Kenny - I was and still am blown away by the talent, technical elements, and social commentary featured in this opus. Otis Taylor's storytelling coupled with his instrumentals and vocals left me wanting more. "White African" is a must for any devoted blues fan and any emerging fans who seek something "different". Thank you, Kenny.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, moody, introspective and piercing like a howl at night.......2003-03-09

One of the most original CD's I have heard in a long time! Takes acoustic Blues, Folk and even some banjo music to darker realms while creating landscapes of storytelling with his voice, which some times howls, whispers and just pierce's your Soul. "My Soul's in Louisiana", "Resurrection Blues" and "3 Days and 3 Nights" are favorites. Every track is well crafted and flows well together. Thumbs up to Northern Blues Records in Canada for capturing such a sound. Simon Aguilar KYNR Crazy Coyote Blues

5 out of 5 stars not the same old blues crap.......2002-11-17

I stole the intro from Fat Possum, but if any blues recording in the new century deserves to be noticed, its Otis Taylor. This CD just blows me away with its honesty, sincerity and punch in the gut realism. Listening to this recording is like being back in the 30's when the blues giants were walking the earth and forever changing the music. However Otis Taylor brings the sound and sound quality to the 21st century. In additon, his musicianship is up there with the best. The modern blues players who cry and complain about poor sales should take their cue from Otis Taylor and Magic Slim. I love this CD and all his music. ...

Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate, a collaborator in the Songhai and Kulanjan projects as well as the New Ancient Strings album, might just be the best player in the world on his 21-string, harplike instrument. Here, accompanied by Keletigui Diabate on balafon (a kind of xylophone) and Basekou Kouyate on ngoni, he tackles original and traditional material in beautiful fashion. Notes fall in rippling cascades from his fingers, whether on the dainty court song "Marielle" or the title track. The speed and dexterity of his playing, and of his ideas, is staggering, and his complete command of the instrument and its possibilities makes this album a joy. The trio arrangements give plenty of time to all players, although center stage is undoubtedly Toumani. While blissfully African, this is a record that transcends geography and ascends to the sublime. --Chris Nickson

    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2007-03-08

Mali is the source for a hell of a lot of great music and Toumani Diabate's is some of my favourite. It's just gorgeous: calm but complex, pleasant but not trite. Check the samples and if you like what you hear but wonder if the rest is as good, trust me, it is.

3 out of 5 stars Has its moments, but is easily surpassed elsewhere.......2003-03-13

This is a hit-and-miss disc. I asked for and received it for Christmas several years ago and still have yet to fall in love with it. The problem being, at least in my opinion, is that in places it displays too much Western influence. At times it feels like some sort of smooth acoustic instrumental Afro-pop. Whereas fellow Malian musicians such as Ali Farka Toure and Oumou Sangare are able to incorporate a bit of Western influence into their music (such as song forms, etc..) and still sound deeply Malian, Toumani is less successful at this. Whereas Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, and Afel Bocoum's best work sounds as if it may have crawled up out of the sand of the Sahel, much of this disc sounds as if it were orchestrated in a sterile music studio.

That's not to say this disc is without merit though. Track #7 is excellent and there are other good moments scattered throughout, but overall I feel there are much better albums out there both in terms of kora albums and Malian albums. On the other hand, it's impossible to take anything away from stunning ngoni player, Basekou Kouyate, on this album. Toumani is indeed one of the best kora players on the planet but still I don't feel that he compares favorably to, say, Guinean master Djeli Moussa Diawara. Plus alot of the material here is like I said. Too smooth. But Basekou is excellent throughout. If only he had been consistently allowed to play on tunes as perfect as Tony Vander (track #7).

5 out of 5 stars Jazz of the ancients.......2003-02-06

Yes, yes , yes, Toumani Diabate is an excellent kora player. But for me the reasons to listen to this album over and over again late at night as I write a new essay or story is the music's essentially jazzy nature -- still think jazz originated in America? Listen to this album. And then, of course, there is the extremely subtle vituosity of Keletigui Diabate on the balafon. The man is incredible! I saw him play with Habib Koite in Berkeley. Keletigui(say it real fast and you're probably almost pronouncing it right "KEH-LEH-ti-gwi") not only played incomparably excellent music on the balfon but also played a bit of violin (listen to him on Boubacar Traore's "Macire"). This album would not be nearly as good without his subtle skills on the balafon. Then, of course, there is a Kouyate playing the ngoni and Toumani on the kora...I could go on and on...

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music from Mali.......2002-08-09

This album brings together three traditional Mali instruments; the kora (harp-lute), the balafon, a type of marimba or xylophone and the ngoni--a mandolin-like instrument with a flexible neck. The three virtuosi on this album are the kora master Toumani Diabate, Keletigui Diabete on balafon and Basekou Kouyate on the ngoni.

If you like "New Ancient Strings", something of a hit album in the World Music genre, you will be pleased with this offering. While the mix of instruments does not have the deep, hypnotic rocking style of the dual kora in "New Ancient Strings" the mix of the three traditional instruments is good to listen to. The music has a very traditional sound, yet is tuneful and completely accessible to any listener. The skirling harp riffs are shored up nicely by the "bones" of the balafon's wooden tonking, and the ngoni is fascinating--it's flexible neck produces half-tone notes like an ancient precursor of the bender or "whammy" bar on an electric guitar.

This music dates far, far back to the 13th Century kingdoms of Mali, and even before, when the kora was the hunter-harp. I wonder if King David's shepherd's harp didn't sound like the kora, and if the music to which the Psalms were sung sounded anything at all like this? We can only imagine about this, as music of the ancients is lost to us. But this sound is timeless, and I play my Toumani Diabate CD's over and over. They certainly speak to me and if the kora was the instrument David played to Saul, I can attest that it has tremendous powers to lighten the soul.

    4 out of 5 stars contemplative virtuosity.......2002-08-07

Folk-music based intrumentals from Mali. This disk works as both foreground and background music: the mood is contemplative but the playing is extraordinarily demanding - so the listener can either listen "hard" and be astonished by kora-player Toumani Diabate's virtuosity, or one can lay back and just let the music flow over you. The disk's production values are not the best, but it just adds to the air of authenticity of three skilled musicians interacting in the moment without the intermediation of studio trickery.

Nearly essential for anyone interested in old-time music, Violin, Sing the Blues for Me may be quite simply the best single-disc anthology of the early 20th century black string-band movement available today. The emphasis here is on the bluesy fiddle playing heard between 1926 and 1949, but the music boasts reams of diverse styles and playing that is simply impossible to pigeonhole. Andrew Baxter milks his fiddle for all its plaintive worth against brother Jim's guitar on "K.C. Railroad Blues," the Mississippi Mud Steppers' "Alma Waltz" is as sublime as they come (perhaps the greatest side ever recorded to feature a banjo-mandolin), and there are plenty of other tracks featuring the now-forgotten wail of the blues violin. But the lively tunes steal the show here: the Mobile Strugglers's previously unissued "Memphis Blues" from 1949 is a classic breakdown; the Tennessee Chocolate Drops's "Vine Street Drag" (featuring the fast fiddling of Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong) showcases some true violin virtuosity; and the Memphis Jug Band's "Memphis Shakedown" is a tour de force of energy and great playing. Truth is, there's not a weak track here, and the copious liner notes will keep you busy long after the CD has played out. If you want to hear the roots of the blues, don't pass this disc up. --Jason Verlinde

    Album Description

"A top-notch compilation of classic performances with superb booklet and photos as well. This is an essential album for anyone interested in blues or string band music." Terry Zwigoff - film director Art School Confidential, Bad Santa, Ghost World, Crumb, Louie Bluie - oldhatrecords.com/ZwigoffInt.html

The violin played a significant role in the early history of recorded blues, with its crying vibratos and sliding notes creating a dramatic and soulful sound. Violin, Sing The Blues For Me offers 24 tracks of this rare music, played by many of the greatest black fiddlers who recorded before mid-century. From the sophisticated style of Lonnie Johnson to the raw Delta blues of Henry Sims to the rollicking tunes of the Memphis Jug Band, these musicians demonstrate the depth and diversity of African-American fiddle music. Included are two early instrumentals by the multitalented Howard Armstrong, also known as "Louie Bluie," whose career in music spanned seven decades. This unique collection presents 73 minutes of vintage fiddle music carefully remastered from original 78rpm records. In addition to blues, the album contains country dances, rags and stomps, folk songs and medicine show music. The CD comes with a 32-page, full-color booklet with detailed history, complete discography, and a host of rare photographs and illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Some not so pretty, but mostly Great. I want more from Old Hat!.......2006-07-27

Inspired by my recent review of Sam Ku West's cd of Hawaiian steel guitar from 1927 and '28, and his version of Memphis Blues contained therein, I decided I need to review this disc which contains a killer Memphis Blues by the Mobile Strugglers.

What you get here is a very fine collection of mostly pre-war fiddle musics, covering a wide range of styles and abilities. From the abysmal toned, a-rhythmic atrocity of Alma Waltz (the very rare bad track) by the Mississippi Mudsteppers at the low end of the spectrum, to the bluesy drawl of Broonzy's fiddle, all the way up to the utter brilliance of the great Lonnie Johnson.

Still, the lesser-knowns are what this is about. Sure the titles of this and the "Folks, He..." disc put the emphasis on violins/fiddles but the music doesn't stop there. There are some seriously great bands here. Full-on killin groove units that will have you dancing on the couch as you listen... Memphis Shakedown and the "train impersonation" song, Moore Girl, for example. I've always found the latter interesting because, at least in my experiences thus far, I'm more familiar with black train-sound songs being done with harmonica, while whites seem to favor fiddle trains. A very cool track.

Also though, for me, Frank Stokes' Right Now Blues and the Alabama Sheiks' Travelin Railroad Blues give this disc a more pensive, vulnerable feeling than the "Folks, He..." disc.

Lots of stylistic variety, lots of great songs and playing. Had I reviewed this when it first came out I'd have probably given it 5 stars, but with the subsequent release of "Folks, He..." I do have to say that the "Folks, He..." disc has a touch better sound. A little less muffled. When I listen to these 2 right in a row, I listen to this one a few clicks louder to make it sound as good.

My continued thanks to all the collectors out there who saved this stuff, and to labels like Old Hat who've allowed people like me to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning recordings, rare music.......2002-07-27

It's pretty amazing, this late in the folkloric/historic reissues game, to find a whole album's worth of "undiscovered" old-timey music that is of such a high caliber. Old Hat Records, a tiny North Carolina indie label, packs its discs with some of the best music in the style that you're ever likely to hear. (You might also want to check out the "Lost Provinces" and "Folks, He Sure Do Pull Some Bow" CDs...) This disc highlights a rare style of African-American fiddle music, featuring rare recordings by the bands that dotted the southern landscape 'way back when. These groups mixed stringband styles and jazzy jug-band blues and, not incidentally, made some of the catchiest music ever. In addition to great sound quality and great material, the CD is handsomely packaged; the insert booklets include some really cool archival photos, as well as extensive liner notes of the sort that have been woefully absent on similar recent reissue efforts.

This has rapidly become one of my favorite discs. Excellent selection of tracks, excellent transfers, excellent booklet. My only complaint would be that the text in the booklet is not in the same order as the tracks on the disk.

5 out of 5 stars Great music - great supporting documentation.......2001-03-01

As early as colonial times, free and enslaved blacks were widely known for their virtuosity on the fiddle, so it was only natural that the instrument would eventually find a home in the blues...even though most people probably don't tend to think of it there. And that's the beauty of this CD. It contains samples of the blues and many of the traditions that preceded it: country dances, rags and stomps, folks songs and medicine show music, all lovingly remastered from early recordings to create 73 minutes of vintage fiddle music. The 32-page full-color booklet alone is worth the price. This is a must-have for any student of African American culture in general, or anyone who just enjoys good music.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply magnificent.......1999-07-16

I don't believe this release can be improved. The song selection is terrific from both a musical and historical perspective. Sound mastering is excellant. The notes, artwork and photographs were not an after thought. They are very well done. OLD HAT has now released two top notch volumes and I really hope there is a lot more in the pipe. This is a mandatory disc for all blues and old timey fans. About the only negative is the sad fact that it probably won't get out to a wider audience. A reissue done by people who love and respect this music. Just superb.

They say third time's a charm, and Enter The Worship Circle meets our expectations! With eclectic melodies tailored by the voices of Ben and Robin Pasley, Barry & Michelle Patterson and Kate Hurley this album is a worthy continuation of the insanely popular Worship Circle series. The recording is as live and rambunctious as any before, and the feel of being in a living room surrounded by hand drums and people who love God is tangible...

This cd is amazing!!!! The best one yet. Some of the most beautiful worship songs that I have everr heard!!

5 out of 5 stars Third Circle = the best yet.......2004-06-06

One could only imagine my excitement when two of my favorite bands, Waterdeep & 100 Portraits, joined together to make a worship album; I wasn't disappointed. The "First Circle" was an amazing experience, but it didn't end there. 100 Portraits gave us another Circle, which was also good but not as good as the first. Now, with the "Third Circle," Ben & Robin Pasley (100 Portraits) have joined thier incredible talent and rhythms with Kate Hurley and Berry & Michelle Patterson to record the most incredible worship album I have ever heard. The songs are extremely intimate as only guitars and hand percussion instruments are used, but they are also filled with life, moving the listener into the presence of God. This is a must have album! Finally, some inovative Christian music that is setting standards instead of simply copying redundant mainstream junk.

5 out of 5 stars Does Not Disappoint.......2003-12-31

Yes, like you, I was hesitant to purchase the third installment of Enter The Worship Circle. Yes, like me, you will purchase this album and not be disappointed.

The First installment blew me away (four stars). The Second was good and had it's moments but was redundant in places to the first (3 stars). The Third installment might actually be as good, if not better than the first, because it manages to match the first in emotional punch and lyrical beauty yet retains a freshness it shouldn't have as a sequel but does.

If this album doesn't make you get up and dance and sing along then you probably have died and NOT gone to heaven.

4 out of 5 stars music is a candle, is a portal to God.......2003-11-20

This CD was mailed to me right here in the middle of a stressful time in art college- I have escaped into it every evening, and even brought it to listen to in my studio. I am an avid follower of the Pasley's, and their hearts, and the hearts of the other people on this album are so sincere and beautful. Tracks 5, 11, and 14 are my favorites!

The blues-Mali connection has been much pondered, and Mali to Memphis attempts to illustrate the tie with selections of both Malian artists and American bluesmen (and women). The Malian cuts, especially those from Rokia Traore, Boubacar Traore, and Lobi Traore, are the most persuasive, setting up long, monochromatic, loping grooves not dissimilar to John Lee Hooker's, over which are laid some spine-chilling vocals, tinged with the Arabic influences of Islam. Hooker himself, who comes in with an acoustic "I'm in the Mood for Love," is the most obvious U.S. stylistic link. Muddy Waters, Eric Bibb, and Jesse Mae Hemphill also provide interesting comparisons, but some of the other blues choices, nice as they are, aren't as convincing examples of musical similarity. The point is well made that it is within the vocal styles that any cross-cultural pollinations are found, not in the 8-, 10-, 12-, or 16-bar structures that dominate the blues idiom. The blues are a vehicle for stories, emotion, and tradition, and the griots of Mali share the same responsibility, only they are much more deeply embedded in, and fundamental to, the culture of the land, something that oozes out of every note they play. --Derek Rath

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2004-01-26

This cd is smooth and mellow. I've been addicted to it since I first got my hands onto it. A real pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars I really love this CD.......2003-05-24

I love the music of Mali--the home of Timbuktu and some really amazing musicians. Their music and its five-tone scale is supposed to be the roots of the Blues. Though the slave trade was mostly a coastal event (Mali is land-locked), wars in the area resulted in prisoners who ended up on slave ships heading for America. The rich Mali music tradtion may have created our American blues.

Here, side by side, Mali musicians play their music with a mix of electric guitar and traditional harp-lute along with cuts by John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. The music is arranged cleverly--you can hear the similarities quite clearly. But aside from being interesting historically, this music is just plain great to hear. The cd has fascinating liner notes, too.

I've already played this twice through just out of the box, and I know this is going to be one of my play-all-the-time CD's.

5 out of 5 stars African Culture Across the Atlantic.......2002-03-05

When many westerners think of African music, they expect something exotic, something primitive, something mysterious. Yet for all their expectations, few Americans seem to realize that they are sitting on a goldmine of African traditions. The African musical traditions served to feed what would develop into the traditions of Blues, Jazz, Rap, Reggae, Rock, Gospel, Salsa and the like. And the purpose of this particular CD is to explore the African roots of the Blues.
Like most Putumayo CDs, this one jumps from Mali to the US, back to Mali (and neghboring Guinea), and to the US again. However, this only serves to show the similarities between these two musical traditions. Excellent selections from big namessuch as John Lee Hooker, Habib Koite, Muddy Waers, Taj Mahal, Rokia Traore and Boubacar Traore characterize this CD. The music, whether Mande or southern, always maintains a uniquely Blues feel to it.
And, as an added bonus to Blues fans, this CD really expands the entire genere. Compare John Lee Hooker's "I'm in the Mood" to Taj Mahal's "Queen Bee" and you'll see what I mean.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2001-10-10

this album is unbelievable. the transiion from the african rythms to the delta blues is incredible. It evokes an indescribable emotion when you listen to it.

If you like Putumayo discs, this one is a must-have! The collection of artists is spectacular and the music is upbeat and easy to listen to. I've given this disc to people that have never heard of Putumayo nor own anything quite like this and the response has always been positive.

3 out of 5 stars The first taste of a Madagascar acoustic guitar virtuoso.......2002-05-25

If you're a guitar player and into playing technique, add a fourth star. This guy is for real, and it's staggering to learn that until after this album was made, he had never owned a guitar of his own. When Henry Kaiser and David Lindley went to Madagascar with a digital recorder and recorded the "World Out of Time" albums, someone played them a tape of a guitarist who had adapted the styles used for traditional Madagascar instruments to the guitar, and played like a virtuoso despite only picking with his thumb and index finger. Dubbed "the monster guitarist from hell", D'Gary was coaxed to the capital city, Antananarivo, where during the two-week "World Out of Time" sessions, he recorded this entire album. It is all acoustic guitar and vocals, with some occasional percussion. His playing has a dream-like quality. My favorite track is "Anary Tany". This is a pretty good album, but unless you're REALLY into acoustic guitar, it's hard to call it compelling. It makes first-rate background music and would be a nice choice for relaxing late at night or using the computer headphones at work. If you're not a guitar player, I recommend you first see if you can get a hold of the "Horombe" album, which is more accessible, has better production and better songs, and provides D'Gary with a backing band and great harmonies.

    5 out of 5 stars Cascading beauty.......2000-09-03

I should have reviewed this cd a long time ago, it deserves all the praise that has been bestowed upon it by previous reviewers.

I was recently at Allmusic.com and I decided to see if their reviews of this cd were similar to what mine would be if I wrote one. If I remember correctly they did praise it, but what I remember most is that they compared D'Gary to Ali Farka Toure. Aside from both men being brilliant, Black, and guitarists, there isn't much musical comparison. They play very different musics. I'd consider both men to be a book in their own right, not merely different chapters.

The only way I can begin to describe D'Gary's acoustic guitar playing is that it sounds and feels like a waterfall of love cascading over me. His playing ebbs and flows in waves of beauty. From both the songwriting and playing points of view, he really is a world treasure. He doesn't have the West African tribal-blues rhythms of Toure, and truth be told, D'Gary's music probably is more difficult for some Westerners to grasp than Toure's is, but if you are willing to let go of conventional ways of hearing and thinking about music then Malagasy Guitar will reward you endlessly.

    5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic.......1999-03-04

I had to take it out of the CD player in my car for fear it would put me in a trance while driving. I encountered this CD in the Amazon.com interview with Bonnie Raitt who found it deep and profound. It results from a field trip to Madagascar taken by among others, David Lindley, who, I think, used to be a side man for Jackson Browne and others.

D'Gary uses 11 different guitar tunings and the liner notes state that even those musicians who watched him as he played could not replicate his music. The music is extraordinarily fascinating. I particularly recommend the 4th track.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius.......1998-09-22

D'Gary lives in a small village that's a good 11-hour walk from the closest highway, and prior to this recording, he didn't even has a guitar of his own, achieving his technical brilliancy and astounding compositional chops by borrowing scrappy guitars from friends (that is, when he could find one). He did a impressive job transposing the vast musical heritage of Madagascar to the acoustic guitar, with results that can't be rated in words. It's heavenly stuff. I must say that he is the most amazing acoustic guitar player that I've heard in many years. Kudos for Shanachie and Henry Kayser for this release!! MORE D'GARY, PLEASE!!

    Album Description

Corey Harris is a griot for modern times, a musical alchemist who has found a unique place on the world stage through constant touring in the U.S. and abroad. Following his starring role in Martin Scorsese's PBS series, 'The Blues,' in which he traveled to Mali to explore the links between African music and the blues, Corey began working on new material that reflected the full range of his experience. As he established himself early in his career as one of the pre-eminent young bluesmen, and as his recent work has embraced an ever-widening circle of black musical vibrations, he emerges on 'Daily Bread' with an accessible, song-oriented sound that simultaneously expresses his roots and his own voice.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Daily Bread.......2005-09-15

Corey Harris' latest offering is solid throughout. Corey is able to blend a lot of different types of blues together with some other genres of music. There's some reggae touches on a few songs; some "world music" touches thrown in some others. This makes the disc nice and varied and not-repetitive.

The songs themselves are mostly very good and very catchy (but not catchy in a corny, lame sort of way). You may find yourself singing the chorus/humming the melody while you're sitting at your desk.

There's a couple songs I wasn't too crazy about - but they were just decent - nothing on here is bad.

So, overall, it's a very good cd. I found mine used and it was well worth that price. Daily Bread is a good cd in a time when music, in general, is lacking in talent. Keep up the good work, Corey!

5 out of 5 stars Not your "traditional'' blues disc .........2005-07-20

Most blues fans know Coreys name by now , he is one of the more interesting roots musicians of the current crop , i.e Keb Mo' (Kevin Moore) Alvin Y Hart , etc . this effort is not styled on Charlie Patton or Robert Johnson or Big Joe Williams , but on Corey Harris . His musical journey has taken him to this recording . I love the variety , the reggae feel on some tracks; his treatment of O.V. Wrights soul classic Nickel And A Nail is cool . the nice thing is the inclusion of Olu Dara on a couple of cuts .. nice move! Great sounds/instrumentation .. nice to hear a Hammond Organ again ..a great listen .

    1 out of 5 stars ludicrous.......2005-07-16

corey harris is certainly one of those so-calld bluesmen of the XXIth century: overpretentious, without any knowledge of blues history and ungifted. In fact, he played anything but blues until he realized there was some bucks for him to grab posing as a true bluesman. This latest opus is the worst: no feeling, no passion, not the single authenticity. Shun this one and give a listen to the true bluesmen

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-07-15

There is not a weak track on this delightful new recording, a combination of West African, Delta acoustic and Reggae roots music. They flow together in a soothing and uplifting way, a blend of playful songcraft and masterful instrumentation. Corey Harris, like fellow Coloradan Otis Taylor, is the real thing - making modern music firmly rooted in the African/Delta acoustic blues sound. This is the music to cure all your blues and make you whole.

5 out of 5 stars From Mississippi To Mali Continued.......2005-07-03

Corey Harris has journeyed into the past and discovered the future. He has managed to find the roots of the music he loves so much and at the same time, give it a gentle nudge forward. This album of African folk blues and reggae is strong from start to finish. Corey's in this amazing, creative place that few artists ever reach. I look forward to each and every release of his. Along with fellow bluesman Otis Taylor, he's one of the most important musicians of our time. You shouldn't miss out.

    Album Description

Classic African-American Ballads is an uncommon sampling of an important, historic, and engaging slice of America's Black music heritage. The heyday of the Black ballad tradition (1890-1920) left a lasting strain of creativity and a monument to African American life of the time. Ranging from songs created from the heritage of the English ballad, to social commentary vilifying abusive white authority figures, to "blues ballads," this album reminds us of the enormity and constant evolution of African American musical tradition. 36-page booklet, 22 classic tracks! 67 minutes of music!
