5 out of 5 stars Another Best of Mehdi .......2007-07-06

"Every album should be called Best of Mehdi," another reviewer once said.
Amen. It's everything everyone says it is. And it was absolutely worth the wait.
Yes, good cover choice; love the white horse.

Where's our DVD, Concertmaster?

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, Relaxing, Wonderful !.......2007-06-29

I also purchased this CD based on the reviews and I'm truly glad that I did. This is Mehdi at his best. I've only listened to it a a few times since I received it, but I know I'll be playing it often. It's especially nice in the car, because it brings the surrounding natural scenery to life. Recommended !

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but not the best I've ever heard........2007-06-29

I bought this based on other review I read on Amazon cold-turkey. It's nice, but not up to the calibur of other albums I have in the same genra.

I wouldn't not recommend it, but I wouldn' rave over it either.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Nirvana - Where sound quality, artistry and composition come together........2007-06-25

Power up the stereo. Turn the lights down low. Don the headphones and energize the CD player. Relax. It's time to enter a world of virtuoso musicianship, of soundscapes that take you to another world. Close your eyes and listen. You're no longer alone but surrounded by beauty and floating into Paradise. You move seamlessly between this world and the next, the music weaving a tapestry that transcends the distance and the times.

Mehdi's Instrumental Paradise is a special recording in that it captures the soul and essence of one of the great musical visionaries in our time.

Mehdi has been playing the piano since he could reach the keys and has composed music for many feature films prior to embarking on his Instrumental musical journey in the mid-90's. Mehdi's music (a mixture of Middle Eastern, Celtic, Greek, Southern European and Spanish or at times Moorish set to neo classical and more modern influences) defies the current practice of cataloging each artist into a standard category. Above all else, this is music for the adventurer in each of us.

Mehdi is the feature artist showcasing his wide-ranging Piano and mesmerizing original compositions. But this is by no means a one-person show. Flutist Dan Jenks, Violinist Tony Ragetti, Percussionist Yoshi Masayuki,Cellist Jesse Von Unwerth,Persian Oudist John Bilezikjian,Guitarist Michael Barbieri,Sitarist Daniel J Gupta are just a few of the virtuoso musicians on this master piece.
They add their tremendous musical talents to a recording that truly is more than the sum of its individual parts. Each of these musicians are talented masters in their own right and have recorded with Mehdi as well as other respected and diverse musicians ranging from Loreena Mckinnett to Yanni.

The sound quality of this recording is beyond reproach. The dynamics and spatial imaging of the recording deserve special mention. This truly is a recording without fault: Over 59 minutes of timeless excellence in sound.

Mehdi's spirituality seems to be as little understood as his music. He is a musical and spiritual adventurer. Each recording contains compositions that deal with a wide range of influences ranging from Christianity to Mysticism to Islam and other faiths. One should be careful in not labeling his beliefs as well as his music. Just listen, learn and enjoy.

If you enjoy artists such as Secret Garden, Loreena Mckinnett,Enya, David Lanz, Phil Coulter, Yanni, classical, Celtic and other world music, or if you are intrigued by a musical adventure, Mehdi's extraordinary Instrumentals should be on your short list of future musical purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous sound !.......2007-06-25

A DJ here in Austin insists on calling Mehdi, "The Jewel of public television." While many of his fans are probably jealous that there's actually a station here that gives him airtime (KGSR, 107.1 -- a near identical twin of KBCO Boulder, 97.3), I've patiently combed public TV listings for months, and never seen his name once. Woe is me!

Ever since some cognoscenti used a snippet of his "Wedding Song" as background on an episode of "Northern Exposure," I've been hooked on Mehdi's compelling blend of inspiring melodies and middle eastern rhythms. The California Native and his bandmates are wizards with their instruments. Volume 8 Instrumental Paradise is a must for any fan of Mehdi's music; and I can think of no better way for someone unfamiliar with his sound to become acquainted.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Loved "Summon the Heroes".......2007-03-17

Great soul-stirring music! Highly recommended for anyone who loves Olympics orchestral and similar music.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational music during awards.......2007-01-22

I use the music on this CD as background when I give awards during track. It's very inspirational & uplifting to the athletes. They love it.

4 out of 5 stars Rousing but...........2006-02-24

This CD, with John Williams at the baton, summons the heroes in a rousing manner with a wide range of Olympic as well as "heroic" (e.g., "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur")selections. Three of the twelve tracks were written by Williams himself with his "Olympic Spirit" being recorded for the first time. The electrifying "Ode to Zeus" by Mikis Theodorakis is probably the single greatest selection.
In an amazing oversight, however, this CD does not include the Olympic Theme.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable romp through Olympic Themes.......2005-09-01

In the US at least, John Williams is known more for his movie scores (Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark to name a few), but he has put his stamp on the Olympics with his several themes and fanfares for the Olympics. Dating back to 1984, Mr. Williams has composed many well known fanfares to the Olympics, and this compilation contains several of his fanfares in addition to music used in other Olympics. The original release for the disc was 1996, which makes it current through the Atlanta Games; if you're looking for the work that John Williams composed for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (2002), you have to go with American Visions (I believe that's the title).

On the whole, the music is well done, but I'm more used to the faster pace of the Parade of the Charioteers found on Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' Hollywood's Greatest Hits Vol. 1.
One other quibble (minor, really) is that people tend to think of the 1984 Olympic Fanfare as being always merged with the traditional Olympic Fanfare, but you can find it separately on By Request by John Williams and the Boston Pops. You'll also have to hunt around for the full composition of what people consider the traditional Olympic Fanfare on another disc, but that's a minor issue.

One nice item on the disc is The Olympic Spirit, which was composed for the NBC Broadcast of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, but never used. My children really like that piece a lot, and usually request it to be replayed when it finishes.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most uplifting and motivating albums!!!.......2005-07-19

When I first listened to this album, I was in awe of the beauty and grandness of the music composed/performed by John Williams. John can make composing music an exalted art. His music is purely genius and captures the ideas of the album in which the score is in. Back to the album . . . it is AWESOME! This includes many well-known songs but also many undiscovered treasures. Of the twelve songs, I especially enjoyed:
Track One-Summon the Heroes
Track Three-Bugler's Dream/Olympic Fanfare and Theme
Track Twelve-The Olympic Spirit
Bottom Line: BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!! A TREASURE!!!!!

Plucked from a wet afternoon of busking Bizet and Puccini to passersby on the Piazza in Covent Garden in the spring of 2001, soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo Karen England soon found themselves singing in slightly larger venues: the FA Cup and Champions League soccer finals. That the management company doing the plucking had recently performed a similar Cinderella crossover act for Russell Watson offered portent, and indeed the Babes--the moniker began as a joke--were soon on their way to this recording debut. The marketing shtick and its soccer connections may offend purists, but it's the football hooligans that the Babes are trying to win over here; can Borodin soothe the savage Manchester United fan? Their classically trained voices mesh gloriously, with England's warm mezzo showing particular character in her solo turns.

The repertoire choices here cover material that may already be familiar to fans of Charlotte Church (i.e., Delibes "Flower Duet") and other crossover acts, but they do include some pleasant surprises, like Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann and "You Live On in My Heart," a reworking of Ennio Morricone's enchanting Cinema Paradiso theme with lyrics by Knight. But in a rush toward the musical middle of the road, it's the productions themselves that sometimes overwhelm the Babes with bathos ("Ave Maria"), hollow thunder ("Aida 2002"), and electro club kitsch (the 'Vibe Tribe' mix of "Flower Duet"). Former Art of Noise mainstay Anne Dudley's tastefully restrained coloring of Tchaikovsky's "1001 Nights" is one of the notable exceptions. They're babes, they sing opera--with fair promise--for the masses, and if they turn one in a hundred from football hooliganism to a well-mannered appreciation of Grieg and Dvorák, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

overorchestrated, overproduced aural wallpaper...that said, still, these women have wonderful voices and are worth hearing. They are oversold,too...Opera Babes! Indeed. Folks who like Enya will like this.

5 out of 5 stars simply beautiful, so just enjoy it.......2007-06-11

my daughter has taught me to love opera. this immediately captured me. the Babes' voices blend so beautifully. I love it! who cares about Puccini, Classic Opera, blah, blah, woof, woof. I love this album

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy renditions and amateurish.......2007-05-15

I heard one of the selections on Sirius and liked it so I bought the CD. Upon hearing the entire CD I was disappointed that the only selection I liked was the one that prompted me to buy the product. The voices are nice but they are simply adding voice to opera masterpieces that do not fit. They are certainly not of the caliber of Sarah Brightman or Charlotte Church and don't look for that. Their sound is mellow, dim and without the emotion that does an inservice to the opera pieces they sing. I found the CD lackluster and in all honestly very "amateurish".

5 out of 5 stars Great songs reinvented, with a twist.......2006-09-30

Expanding upon the recent interest in Gregorian chant fusion as well as rich-voiced solo vocalists such as Josh Groban, operatic soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo soprano Karen England offer full-vibratoed, somewhat modernized interpretations of favorite classical themes. Backed by chorus, orchestras, keyboards and drums, they draw from such diversely satisfying works as Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly," Grieg's "Piano Concerto in a minor," Dvorak's "New World Symphony," Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream," Orff's "Carmina Burana," Delibe's "Lakme," Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman," Schubert's "Ave Maria," and Verdi's "Aida." Some of the arrangements are fairly traditional, while others are noticeably enhanced. The emphasis tends to be on pretty pieces with sweet melodies, though a few are more intense in nature (#1, 4, 5, 15 and 17). A couple of pop songs, still sung in operatic style, are thrown in for good measure, although they don't have the same appeal and mystique as the old favorites. All of the selections feature both vocalists together, singing in lovely, close harmony. The arrangers of this elegantly hip music include Jon Cohen, Noely, Frank Gallagher, Deni Lew and Anne Dudley, with multi-language lyrics (for the adaptations of instrumental works) by Rebecca Knight and others. I have to admit that I occasionally found myself longing for the modern additions to be more consistently interesting and distinctive--in other words, equaling the artistry of the classics that they're accompanying. Track #1, which really shines, is a well-done example. Alternately, perhaps the source songs might have been better off left in their pure, original styles rather than watered down with schmaltzy, predictable underpinnings that don't add much to the music. But like Enigma did for medieval chant, the Opera Babes are endeavoring to bring some wonderful, time-tested music to a wider audience, fusing it with modern idioms in way that is artistic and generally appealing. For more opera fusion, compare the work of Amici Forever (a group of five singers, both male and female), and the oddly packaged but similar-in-concept album "Coco de Mer" by Adam Plack.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Beyond Imagination.......2006-02-26

What I really enjoyed about this album was its distinctive sound and arrangement of the material. I enjoy classically performed opera and was surprised how much I like the Opera Babes' versions. Of course, the wonderful voices added immensely to the high quality of this product.

Few country artists of the 1990s have been able to meld a pronounced pop sensibility with the core elements of classic country as effectively as Miami's Mavericks. Their 1992 major-label debut displays a band mature well beyond its years, one not afraid of either tantalizing melodies or country music history. Here the Mavericks reprise four tunes from their eponymous indie debut and toss in four new Raul Malo originals along with covers of Hank Williams (a lackluster "Hey Good Lookin'") and Buck Owens (a much more engaging "Excuse Me"). Their deft mix of old-school honky-tonk, Orbisonesque sob stories, and punchy modern country-rock serves notice of a band with enormous commercial and artistic potential. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-04-12

Having only heard this Group once before, I was particularly pleased with their performance especially the track Children. Hope to hear more of the Group.

5 out of 5 stars First commercial recordings.......2005-07-12

The Mavericks recorded some material that they circulated to record companies when they were looking for a deal (and those recordings were eventually released as an album) but this album marks the official start to their career. On its own merits, this is an impressive debut although their subsequent albums (What a crying shame, Music for all occasions, Trampoline) are even more impressive.

The set opens with a very sad song (Mr Jones) about a man returning to a former home after many years, only to find it in a state of semi-dereliction. An even sadder song (Children) closes the set. In between, there are some other sad songs (This broken heart, The end of the line, Forever blue) as well as a Buck Owens cover (Excuse me I think I've got a heartache) but its not all doom and gloom.

The title track is about a Cuban man who finally makes it to America I got you is about a man who puts up with a lot of things, knowing that his partner makes it all worthwhile. A better way is about a man scorning a former partner who cheated on him, having found a new and better partner. Most upbeat of all is the second and last cover here (Hey good looking, the old Hank Williams classic).

If you enjoy listening to the Mavericks and you've already got some of their other albums, you should give this one a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Class Act from Malo and the Mavericks.......2002-03-02

I've called this the best country album for non-country listeners for various reasons. First, Raul Malo - the unlikely Cuban-country-songwriter channels Roy Orbison in a way that often surpasses the great late Roy with a pure voice that must be keeping the angels company in heaven. Second, there are familiar songs here like "Hey, Good Lookin'" which the Mavericks deliver beautifully, with new added resonance and spirit. And finally, the originals - from the title track to the last song "Children" (an eerie paean to lost innocence that easily ranks as one of the best story songs of our time) - are wriiten with a sure, steady hand, and delivered with incomparable feeling. It's no wonder this talented group has won multiple Grammy Awards, and this album, along with "What Crying Shame" and several others, proves their standing at the top of their game. A spirited, wonderous journey that stands heads and tails above myriad other "country" acts. This is a definitive collection from Malo and company.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I have ever owned.......2001-06-25

Wow, I saw the Mavericks in concert in 1995 and purchased all their albums the next day. When I listened to From Hell to Paradise it sent me spinning. Listen to This Broken Heart, If you have ever had your heart broken you will weep. Not only can the band rock like in Hey, Good Looking, but Raul has one of the riches most poinant voices I have ever heard. They also have a social conscience as evidenced in Children, they beg us to look out for the little ones who need our love and protection. The best song on this album rings through my mind often, paricularly during the Elian Gonzalez affair. This is Raul's lament for Cuba, From Hell to Paradise, "No pleasantries, no luxuries and no little childrens milk, while ministers wives spend all their lives in china's finest silk, my back has been broken many times but my spirit lingers on..." . Buy this album, listen to it and let it touch your soul. Thank you, David, Paul, Robert and most of all Raul for this gift, you touched my heart and soul, you are truly artists.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Be Shy, Give It A Try!.......2001-05-29

First of all, whoever heard of a country band from Miami? At least that's what I thought when I first read about The Mavericks, but after listening to this, their debut album, I quickly forgot about that transgression. Mixing a pop sensibility with the twang of classic country, The Mavericks unfortunately found themselves categorized as "new country," and as a result, found themselves fighting for attention with dreck like Garth Brooks, The Judds, and Faith Hill. What they ultimately bring to the table, however, is the bravado and attitude of a rock and roll band, as evidenced by "Mr. Jones," the title track, and their cover of "Hey Good Lookin'". And Raul Malo's voice? Don't get me started. A keeper...

Pianist David Lanz once joked that his melodic, soul-searching music could be categorized as "New-and-improved Age." On Finding Paradise, his second release for Decca, Lanz calls his approach "Smooth Age"--a fitting description and a smart career move for Lanz, whose recent solo and orchestral projects have been bypassed by smooth-jazz radio. Lanz enlists saxophonist Dave Koz, guitarists Peter White and Marc Antoine, and other guests to give several Paradise tracks a more rhythmic, radio-friendly pulse. The switch suits Lanz's melodic instincts well, turning the opening cuts ("That Smile" and "Walk on Water") into engaging, sun-filled gems. Thereafter, the disc varies in style from back-bending sax (on a remake of Neil Diamond's "America") and calypso lite ("Romantica") to a few string-enhanced solo works ("Tears for Alice," "Love Lost, Love Found"). While the disc doesn't quite sustain the momentum of the opening tracks, it's a likable package overall. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Lanz scores again.......2004-03-25

Am a longtime Lanz listener - this is one of his best. He may not as prolific as Arkenstone but this cd has class. There is not a "bad" song on the disc. Luna rocks. Why are so many people selling this used? This is a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars "THE INNER GLOW OF ONE AT PEACE.".......2003-02-21

From the first song, "THAT SMILE," FINDING PARADISE pierces straight into my heart and soul overwhelming, inspiring Beauty. There is a tropical feel and the piano playing is delicate, pure and true delivered with intense emotion and passion. I smile as I am lifted into its overflowing wonder--and that is just the first track! I adore this track more than I can ever say.

The journey continues with "WALK ON WATER." In David's liner notes he talks about how Walden, the co-writer (aka Snuffy) would always like to say, 'If you leave a little space, God just might walk into the room.' "Or, in other words," continues David, "in a tough situation, if you can just keep the faith, find a little hope, let go and rise to the occasion, you may just surprise yourself and against all odds..." 'Walk on Water.' I can't help but love David, you too, 'Snuffy.' Smooth sax, and intricate acoustic guitar weaves in with the piano to continue the audial feast. Yummy.

Things slow down a bit with "LOST IN PARADISE." Here is one of my favorite tracks. It is introspective, bittersweet, full of longing and has a tender, true violin playing along with David's piano. In his liner notes, David talks about our global society briefly but, being the optimist he is, says, "It is my belief that each soul born, when enpowered and encouraged, will naturally bring forth and reveal the gift of their true self. It will be the sharing of these gifts over time that will surely show us the way in our search for finding paradise here on earth."

"AMERICA," originally by Neil Diamond, pulls at my heartstrings and makes me feel great hope and inner peace. David says, "Patriotism is a form of love--a love for country. My wish for America is to allow this great love to not only create unity and healing amongst our people, but to let it wash over our shores and embrace the whole of humanity." Wow, I love this.

"DORADO" reinterates and radiates the magic expressed in the previous track, adding even more strength and joy. I love the acoustic guitar and piano together here. Bravo! "The mythical city of El Dorado was said to have had streets paved with gold. However, in this song, I wanted to capture just the feeling of gold...a golden moment in time, the inner glow of one at peace." Mission accomplished, David. Brilliant and captivating, this may be my favorite track.

"ROMANTICA" is David Lanz's and Koz's first attempt together. But you'd never guess it. There is an immediate feeling of the tropical paradise again. It is a slow, simple, glorious melody--oh so relaxing. If I were sitting right now on the beach of my dreams, I would definitely want this song playing. It is painting some stunning dreamscapes in my mind now!

The seventh track is "TEARS FOR ALICE," a song dedicated to his wife, Alicia. David says "It is imbued with quiet sadness and ultimate hope..." I really like that. HOPE.

"THE SOUND OF WINGS," is a lovely title and a tender, intricate track full of indescribable beauty; and even if describable, completely unutterable--it must be felt with the heart. My heart beats faster hearing it--another of my favorites.

"LUNA" (originally titled 'The Tides of the Moon') continues the peaceful feeling that this cd is all about. Luna is "our closest and arguably our most poetic of the heavenly bodies," says David. This track is mesmerizing. I love it.

"THEME FROM THE OTHER SIDE" opens with wind and then the sax. This song was inspired by the dark, moody sounds of a cd of his daughter Tara's, by Portishead. David dedicates this song to "my good friends, Dr. Gary Schwartz and Dr. Linda Russack." This song is very calm and soothing, quite different from the mood set in the first two tracks. But I like the way David transverses through moods...people do it all the time, so why shouldn't music also?

The final track, "LOVE LOST...LOVE FOUND" is music for "all of us hopeless romantics. May the search for love and paradise continue," says David. This is a perfect ending to an enchanting cd. I love this track very much.

BOTTOM LINE: RETURN TO PARADISE is a treasure of Boundless Beauty! Buy it and listen to nourish your soul. o8E

5 out of 5 stars Musical Ecstasy.......2003-01-24

"Paradise ... does exist all around us, inside of us, something we can touch, or is it merely a state of mind? The latter rings truest for myself. Inner peace seems to be best found on our own terms, and in our own time. My wish is that this music may give you pause and maybe just a little help on your journey to ...finding paradise." -David Lanz

I am so completely impressed by this album. Not only do the notes break crisp and fresh in an atmosphere of elation, the entire album is just one blissful note after the other. I've long been a fan of David Lanz and his music is always inspirational.

"That Smile"
Hopeful, energetic and almost impish. Written on a cold December morning just before the winter holidays. It seems to hold all the wishes and dreams of a child within the notes.

"Walk on Water"
Much slower and sexier. Possibilities are endless. An almost spiritual
piece that makes you take a deep breath and drift off into your own thoughts.

"Lost in Paradise"

Almost magical and romantic. A complete escape. Lanz was inspired by thoughts of each soul born to this earth having a gift. I love the violin in this selection. I'm thinking gypsy or wandering or escaping to some secret place no one else knows about.

"America"
The sax brings a note of sadness to a version of the Neil Diamond classic. Lanz takes this song to a whole new level of brilliance. Sends shivers right through your being and brings out that patriotic feeling of deep love for your country.

"Dorado"
David Lanz attempts to capture a golden and peaceful feeling and succeeds. He was inspired by the mythical city of El Dorado that was said to have streets paved with gold.

"Romantica"
Inspired by thoughts on the romantic soul. Composed in a joint effort by Dave Koz and David Lanz. Southern California/Beach Boys flavor.

"Tears for Alice"
A song dedicated to David's wife. A quiet sadness and hope as if expressed
by a child. Soft notes weave around violins, cello and harp. Somewhat innocent.

"The Sound of Wings"
Inspired by a book and meant to capture the image of a multitude of descending angels. I also imagine angels flying in this song. Maybe flying down to earth to carry souls back to heaven.

"Luna"
Inspired by Orcus Island's gentle tides. I've been there once and it is quite peaceful. The music does seem to reflect the atmosphere there.

"Theme from the Other Side"
Dark and moody and almost nostalgic. Takes you into another realm. Calms the soul.

"Love Lost ... Love Found
At first painful and then hopeful and fulfilling. David explores all the emotional elements from the first awakening of love to the excitement of being "in love" and intertwines the bittersweetness of loss and new discoveries.

If you have forgotten that there is beauty in the world, look inward and listen to "finding paradise."

5 out of 5 stars Lanz' version of "America" a great 9/11 tribute.......2002-08-28

I wasn't expecting as magnificent a combination of advanced "new age" and smooth jazz as I did here. Lanz' piano work shines through on each arrangement here, often with a singing quality to its sound.

This album also awakened a new admiration for Dave Koz, a musician who previously, in my estimation, seemed to be trying to become a second Kenny G, a rather questionable goal maybe. But, here he shines on several fronts. He produced four of the cuts starting with the opener, "That Smile". He performs on "Walk On Water" (which was composed by Snuffy Walden along with Dave Lanz), "Romantica" (a smooth, exotic number composed by Lanz along with Dave Koz), and "Luna". Each performance shows a new individuality, a breaking away from the commercially smooth Kenny G mode and a finding of himself musically.

The cover of Neil Diamond's "America" is an expression of a great love, of reaching for unity and healing, and encompassing the globe, not just this country. This highlight performance would've made this CD noteworthy even if the surrounding pieces didn't match it...but they do.

The hheart-searching "Tears For Alice" and the last cut, "Love Lost...Love Found", each features a rich string & harp accompaniment.

This whole performance has Lanz branching out, developing, expanding and should be heartily welcomed by his followers and by those discovering him for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars SOOTHING AND HEALING.......2002-08-20

I would like to begin by saying that I have been transported to my inner self by listening to this superb Lanz'cd. First time I knew about him, was about 15 years ago when one of my brothers living in the States brought me a cassette from him. And since then I am, maybe, her fan Nr.1 in South America, that is for sure!! I felt completely healed and soothed and I really needed a little bit of that due to the horrible things happening in my beloved country, Colombia. As I am not a native English spoken, I do not know if I am writing correctly but I am trying to do my best. I would like to recommend this CD to everybody who is in search of inner peace and for being a better individual in this agitated and suffering earth.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-19

I like the music, but the sound quality is terrible. I bought this CD because it was released in 2003, but there is ZERO improvement in sound quality from previous older tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Enough with the damn compilations!.......2005-06-11

First of all I like Vangelis very much. However I have had it with the way that his music is being released. We are consistently given compilation releases (usually of the same tracks that are on other releases). WHAT IS THE POINT????!!
All the more frustrating is that Vangelis has a ton of unreleased music that many fans like myself have been after for years. Sorry the bootlegs on Ebay just don't cut it.
Where's an official release of "Cavafy", "The Bounty", "Francesco", and "Bitter Moon". Where is all the still unreleased music from "1492", "Blade Runner", "Antarctica" and "Chariots of fire", yes he released soundtracks for these films but they were sadly lacking.
Unfortunately we will probably have to wait for Vangelis to demise before we ever get these tracks, if even then.

4 out of 5 stars worth buying, has seven good Vangelis songs.......2005-05-25

Some may complain that this is not a definitive Vangelis CD. Nope, it is far from being that, but it has seven good songs on it that make it worth purchasing for less than $20. Those seven good songs are: Hymne, Alpha, Chariots of Fire, Missing, Pulsar, Petite Fille de la Mer, and L'enfant. Of course, those are just my personal favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Vangelis' Best Known Songs.......2004-06-10

It's hard to keep track of the number of compilations of Vangelis. Off the top of my head, I can think of "The Best of", "Greatest Hits", "Themes", "Portraits", and "Reprise". But they never got it right, something was always off, or one period or another of his career was not covered. Now comes "Oddisey: The Definitive Collection". While it may be pushing your luck to proclaim anything as a Vangelis "definitive" compilation", given his prolific output over the years, I am here nevertheless to tell you that this compilation is as good as it will get.

"Oddisey: The Definitive Collection" (18 tracks, 78 min.) in my opinion truly does compile all of Vangelis' best know tracks and greatest hits. Most of the tracks on here will sound immediately familiar, many because they are movie themes (Chariots of Fire being the most famous of course, but also The Missing, Blade Runner, thankfully containing both the beginning and end titles, Mutiny on the Bounty, and others), and other that became well known in commercials (Hymne, L'Enfant, among others). There can be no denying the creativity and talents of Vangelis. There are 2 bonus tracks, "I'll Find My Way Home" and "State of Independence", the 2 best known tracks of Jon & Vangelis, a nice touch to the album.

I share my frustration with other reviewers here that there is tons of great Vangelis music out there that remains unreleased. To be sure, Vangelis deserves a box-treatment of rare and unreleased tracks. But if you are looking for a single-disk overview of his best known songs, look no further: "Oddisey" is it. Released in Fall, 2003, it is a nice way to commemorate Vangelis turning 60 (say it ain't so!).

2 out of 5 stars Hip-O Records trying to make money from us.......2004-04-20

Hos this company dares to call this compilation definitive collection??? Bring something new and then I'll consider your work. Shame of you!!!

5 out of 5 stars Two and a half hours of divine music...what more can I say?.......2006-02-27

Well, a lot! And since no one else has taken the trouble to review my favorite Adagios collection, I'm just gonna hafta go an' do it myself, won't I?

Starting with the stunningly gorgeous 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' by Bach, this tape reels you in instantly. I'm not much of a fan of 'slow' and 'peaceful' music; I like the beautiful, sublime type that just makes you tingle all over whenever you hear it. (If only Canon in D was in this tape my cup of joy would overflow) Anyway, don't stop listening because Delibes' 'Flower Duet' comes soon after and it is the very meaning of divine. I listen to the taoe just to hear that one song over and over--but not too much, or it'll loose it's touch. This is a Opera duet (sorry, don't know technical terms, my passion is music, not the science of) sung by two women, for those of you out there like me who know practically nothing!! Gorgeous! Sugoi!! (That's Japanese)

Ahem.
The lovely 'Ombra mai fu' (which, I believe Elizabeth Bennet's sister horribly sings in the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries) is another memorable piece (hear the previews of these titles, please) and finally, William Vaughan's 'The Lark Ascending' a sixteen minute piece of violin heaven played so expertly you will see larks flying in circles about your head--or is that because your noggen got whacked?

Well, as for the second CD, it wasn't quite as memorable, but it's up against perfection, ok? Brahms' 'lullaby' (yes, THAT lullaby) is really sweet and of course there's 'Claire de Lune', a favorite of the Adagios collection, besides 'Sheep may safely graze' and 'Air on a G string'. (Honestly, does EVERY Adagios collection have that one? It's not even that wonderful.)

But what am I going on and on for?
BUY IT!!!!

NOW!!!!

STOP THINKING ALREADY AND BUY IT!!!

Tulku is a Tibetan word for a reincarnated Buddhist master, a Bodhisatva who returns to the corporeal world again and again to help sentient beings along the path to enlightenment. Perhaps the most well known Tulku is the current incarnation of the Dalai Lama.

Then there's Jim Wilson. As far as I know he doesn't claim to be Buddhist, nor a reincarnated Bodhisatva, just a boy born of American Indian and Irish parents who loves music in all its infinite varieties. Early in his career he played country swing, country rock, produced a Grammy Award wining zydeco album, and then developed a life-long interest in Native American music, recognized in 2005 with a Grammy Award for his production, Sacred Ground.

Reflecting an expanded interest in indigenous music, Wilson launched a world beat project in the mid 90's seeking to preserve the traditional sound, the old soul, in a new body. And thus Tulku was born in its first incarnation, 1995's Transcendence. Since then there have been two other incarnations, 1998's Season of Souls, and 2002's A Universe to Come, all of them the product of close collaboration with American kirtan singers Khrishna Das and Jai Uttal.

The newest manifestation, Doors to Paradise, is built on familiar foundations, mid-tempo beats and ambient washes providing the background for an international cast of singers and musicians. Featured on this outing are South African kora player Pops Mohamed and classical Indian singer Samia Mahbub Ahmad, appearing on five of the album's 11 tracks. The only other player featured on more than two tracks, besides Wilson himself, is oud player Abdelouahed Zamin.

There's nothing on Doors to Paradise that sounds terribly new or inventive, nothing that you haven't heard on numerous Buddha Bar compilations. Wilson's programming creates a laid-back, moody atmosphere, over which he layers solo vocal and instrumental performances. Stand out tracks include Shanti Afrique, a virtual one-man show with Pops Mohamed on kora, voice and percussion, a quiet shuffle with only the slightest intrusion from the synthesizers; Paradise, a lush arrangement of new age piano intertwined with violin and the swooping and swirling of the ethereal voices of Consuelo Luz and Annette Cantor; Zamin's deft picking of the oud on Travelers From a Strange Land; and the swapping of solos between the kora and oud on The Dawn of Blessing.

Doors to Paradise is a fine example of the genre, sure to please fans of artists such as Deep Forest, Engima, Waterbone, B-Tribe, Dead Can Dance, or Sacred Spirit.
