Customer Reviews:
have been searching for this for years.......2007-06-11
Happy to see the Collegium Terpsichore CD out again (disc 1), though hiding in this bargain set, wasn't immediately obvious. But one listen to the Praetorius samples and knew I found it. This album was played continuously on the air on KKHI when I was in college (circa late-hippie_, and I never tired of it. I wore out my LPs. Now I've misplaced that single CD so might have to buy it again if I can't locate it soon. Phooey. At least it's available. It's the most refreshing CD you'll ever put on your player.
Been looking for years.......2007-02-13
I have been looking for the Deutsche Grammophon "Dances from Terpsicore" from the 60's but to no avail till now. The entire album is included in this two disc set...

An Excellent Introduction to Renaissance Dance.......2005-06-23
This is my first disc of Renaissance dance music, for which I have been searching for quite a while. I thought ir was very excellent. I have heard some before when I was in a few Shakespeare plays, and ever since, I have been looking. These selections provide a broad range of the music of the courts during the 15th and 16th centuries. There is music from all over Europe, including what sounds like Southeastern Europe. The interpretations are also very good, and they put me, at least, back into that time period. The only problem I found was the glockenspiel like instrument, which was sometimes a little annoying. Otherwise, wonderful.
renaissance dance music.......2004-10-24
This CD is a compilation of three recordings which are From The Vault: Dance Music of the High Renaissance by Fritz Neumeyer, Dance Music of the Renaissance by Josef Ulsamer, and Early Baroque Music by Konrad Ragossnig.
Wonderful reissue from early days of early music recordings.......2004-01-28
This cd is a reissue of material from several albums in the 60s. The Fritz Neumeyer recordings of Praetorius are from an old Archiv LP that was one of my first introductions to "early music", and it can be charged that it was more enthusiastic than historically informed. A recorder consort will take up one section of a tune, and then a group of viols will swirl in, maybe followed by crumhorns playing another brief phrase, and then a solo harpsichord finishing off the tune. Different instruments provide a variety of textures of sound, keeping things interesting even though most of the tunes are played fairly "straight", without a lot of improvisation. There's been quite a bit of research and rediscovery of Renaissance techniques since this record was first out, and I appreciate those, but these old recordings really get my toe tapping and remind me why I fell in love with early music in the first place.

Michael Praetorius, German composer and observer of things musical, was one of the most important musicians of the mid-17th century. His encyclopedia of musical instruments, Syntagma Musicum, richly illustrated and annotated, has in many instances given us our only description of the bewildering variety of musical noisemaking devices in use at the time. Terpsichore, similarly, is a collection of mostly French dance music that has never ceased to inspire players and listeners. It's the source for much of what we now call "Renaissance" music, even though it actually dates from about a hundred years later, and no early-music fair or festival would be complete without it. These performances, by an appropriately costumed Dutch early-music group, have the right sense of fun, and their instrumental arrangements are both zesty and colorful. Delightful. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
This is not the same as the Archiv vinyl LP.......2005-04-27
There was a terrific LP released by Archiv on vinyl in the 70s called "Dances from the time of Praetorius" - I bought this CD hoping it would be essentially the equivalent release. I realize now that the Archiv LP included only 6 dances actually written by Praetorius, which do appear to be included in this CD.
The Archiv LP also included 5 compositions by Erasmus Widmann and 12 by Johann Schein. As far as I can tell, that release is not available on CD. This CD may be only part of the solution for anyone who is trying to find it.
Not just beautiful.......2005-02-24
This music is not just beautiful but also serves as a great period piece that can be used in class to set a mood. This is clearly secular and contrasts nicely with other music that is religious to show that all people's minds were not just on the heavens -- but were also, at least occasionally, on earth as well. This is music that is light and lifts the spirit --then I am sure as well as now. Play this for students and they will like it.
Great Music, Great Price.......2005-01-11
I have been a Praetorius fan since 1965 when I was a teenager, and I will always buy recordings featuring his music. I've had to re-order this particular CD again because I wore a hole in it playing it in the car, at home, hotel rooms, you name it. This CD is a lot of fun. One can dance to the tunes, hum along, and just kick back and relax ... not recommended when driving a car, however. Praetorius was also a "serious" religious musician, and this is a nice, secular change from his heavier stuff. Highly recommended!
Good fun, variety, and versatility........2004-04-09
What we call Renaissance Dance Music has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent decades. No self-respecting record catalogue can afford to be without it. Naxos offers this 57-minute CD, comprising 28 items from Michael Praetorius's collection "Terpsichore" of 1612. Nowhere in the published collection was instrumentation specified, hence modern groups such as this have fun "setting" each piece for the combinations of period instruments they play. Sometimes some fancy percussion is added to help point the dance rhythms.
Good fun, variety, and versatility are to be heard in the work of this fine Swedish ensemble, marred slightly by a narrow recording spectrum that lacks high and low frequencies. A reproduction of "The Peasant Dance" by Pieter Breugel the Elder adorns the front cover.
Renaissance Rocks!.......2002-07-15
This selection of music from Praetorius' Terpsichore (a small selection from over 300 individual pieces) is very enjoyable. It spans several different styles from few instruments to the whole kit and kaboodle, and voice. You can tell they had fun in those days. I keep this one in my car and listen to it over and over from start to finish, never needing to skip a track. If you are interested in Renaissance music, this is your ticket; and the price is right.

This title isn't just a joke. It makes the valid point that these Renaissance pieces occupied the same place in their culture as our pop music does in ours. People whistled these tunes in the street and danced to them at night, and you can easily accept the disc's title when hearing the Baltimore Consort's extremely lively performances, which have all the rhythmic drive and gusto of a good rock band. The ensemble's arrangements and the variety of its programming also contribute to the success of this disc, which would make an excellent introduction to music of the period. The booklet contains translations of all the vocal texts, and Dorian's sound leaps out of the loudspeakers with great clarity and presence. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
My favorite + audiophile recording.......2005-05-26
I've attended Baltimore Consort performances a number of times, and they are just about my favorite early music group. They do an outstanding job of making "old" music come alive. Sometimes early music recordings are dry and academic, and the Baltimore Consort is as far from that as you can get. Finally, they have a great since of humor, which often peaks through in their music.
They specialize in popular secular tunes of the age. Their playing is impeccable, and most of the group are accomplished soloists. La Rocque 'n' Roll is probably my favorite recording of theirs, the songs are fun, interesting, and involving. The best of the best...
The fact that the recording is technically very good is a nice bonus. As a matter of fact, "Jean de Nivelle" (track 26) is the first thing I play when evaluating speakers. It helps that I've heard the performance live (and unamplified), so I have a real life comparison. The recoding clearly captures the nuances of the individual instruments. Although obviously not as loud as modern rock, the recording still gives challenges speaker dynamics. Unlike some gee whiz audiophile recordings, I can listen to these songs again and again.
absolute favorite .......2004-10-16
I've been collecting renaissance/medieval music for several years and have finally found something that sounds as though the musicians are actually having FUN with the repertoire. This is a blast, I recommend it to all.
Fun stuff!.......2002-11-29
The jaunty, whimsical tone of this CD is set by the opening bars of the first piece, "J'ai vu le loup," which starts out with one of the musicians shouting "Un! Dieux!" Many parallels are subtly drawn between the secular music of Renaissance France and popular music of today. "The appeal of performing 'popular' repertory lies in the opportunity it provides for creative expression," explains the insert booklet. "All of the song and dance arrangements on this CD are the creation of the members of the Baltimore Consort, who sometimes only have an unharmonized melody to start with..." What they may lack in specific direction from the long-dead song writers, they more than make up for with catchy arrangements and spirited improvisations. Soprano Custer LaRue sings her sultry French lyrics with relish and gusto, and the addition of reedy crumhorns and bagpipes played by Chris Norman and Mark Cudek adds to the provincial French flavor. The fun of the music is echoed in the CD's amusing packaging: The album cover, somewhat reminiscent of the Beatles' "Abbey Road", features the ensemble members walking along in single file, with their viol and lute cases in hand. Other interior pictures of the group poke fun at other folk and rock imagery, including one shot of a gentleman in shades licking the neck of his bass viol. Not exactly the norm for early music releases, but refreshing for just that reason. Rocque on!
A perfect album.......2000-02-22
This is my favorite CD of all time. I've had it now for five years, I listen to it all the time, and I never get tired of it. Every track is enormously beautiful, from the bright and sunny tunes through the quieter and more melancholy ones.
This is a CD that sounds perfect in the early morning, late at night, or any other time of day.
I've become a huge fan of the Baltimore Consort (one of the highlights of my life was seeing the group perform the songs on this album live at Synod Hall in Pittsburgh, PA) and "La Rocque 'n' Roll" is their "Sgt. Pepper."
If Led Zeppelin had been born 400 years earlier..........1999-10-02
...and played the lute, they would've played like Ron McFarlane, and sang like Custer LaRue. Wonderful performances of 16th C popular music on historical instruments, with lovely twists of rock'n'roll performance techniques. Check out the jazzy krummhorn glissandos, the sexy lute strumming, the straight-ahead power vocal, and the hip plucked bass viol -- especially on the last track. This is my #1 "Desert Island Disk."

Customer Reviews:
good sound but sterile.......2007-04-07
This recording has modern sound but everything sounds a bit too easy and too overrefined which makes it ultimately sound slightly sterile. I prefer David Munrow's Susato recording: from the very start you can sense the joy, excitement, slight trepidation that Munrow's band had in playing these renaissance instruments.
Pop music of another age.......2005-10-04
Tielman Susato is listed as the name on this collection, not because he was the composer, but because in addition to being a composer, Susato's primary business for many years was as a publisher of music. This music comes from the book that he published on dance music - it was the only such book he produced, preferring polyphonic music, choral and church music to things like dance music. However, music publishing was a good business, and many amateurs paid to have arrangements done that they could then practice with (professional dance musicians, ironically for this collection, rarely used printed music but rather preferred improvisation and knew their material by heart).
This collection is performed on period instruments of the 1500s, which include violins, viols, rebec, hurdy-gurdy, lutes, guitars, cittern, trumpets, cornetts, sackbuts, serpent, recorders, gemshorne, flutes, crumhorns, curtals, shawms, racketts, sorduns, regal, organ, harpischord and percussion. This particular recording is envisioned as if it were a single evenings' dance and entertainment at court, where dancing was as much an art form as it was a social event.
The music here derives from formal compositions of musics and tunes as well as popular folk songs. Susato is most likely not the composer of most of the music (indeed, may not be composer of any), but put things into arrangements that has a sensitivity both to the dance aspects as well as the artistic merits of the music itself.
The music here is performed by the New London Consort, a group with great experience in early and Renaissance music, under the direction of Philip Pickett. The pieces performed here range from small ensembles (4 lutes for one; regal and nakers for another) to pieces with massive orchestration (cornet, 3 sackbuts, 2 violins, 4 viols, 7 recorders, curtal, organ, harpischord, 5 guitars, side drums and tabors for one!).
This is a bright and lively recording. The purpose is to dance, and in the Renaissance and surrounding times, people danced with vigour, life and spirit! This is uplifting and fun music, the kind that makes one want to get up and move. This recording is simply brilliant from start to finish.
Beautifully imagined.......2005-09-06
I was loaned this CD many many years ago by a family friend. I tape recorded it so I could peruse it at my leisure and grew to love it. Yes, it is percussion heavy, and I don't care. I used to crank La Bataille as if it were my heaviest metal album and every time it makes my hair stand up and fills me with joy. That sounds corny, but it's true.
Some of my other favorites include the suite that has Fagot and the Hoeboeckens Dans (spelling is wrong, I know). I was also loaned the "sheet music" with the CD, a book containing most of the pieces on the disc. When you see it, you realize there are no percussion parts written and no instruments assigned to specific parts with the exception of clef signs. I am immensely impressed by the imagination of Pickett and the New London Consort in their instrumentation and transitions from piece to piece. The sound quality is great, and in the larger moments it sounds as if there is an entire early instrument symphony playing, it's that full. So often, early music sounds timid, wimpy, and small. This disc has a huge range of sound and the highs will elevate you and surely give you the urge to dance.
Unfortunately, my tape is gone (plus La Bataille hdd some missing music due to the recording flipping sides in the middle of the piece when I taped it), and the family friend is no longer a family friend, and now I have an empty place in my musical soul. I wish this would be re-issued. I would buy two.
Finally, I grew up surrounded by amateur early musicians, and my ears have been seriously battered by people trying to play sacbuts, krumhorns, serpents and hurdy-gurdys. While they look cool, many of these instruments are hell to make sound good. I was floored by the intonation, tone, and colors that the NLConsort achieve in this recording.
A perfectly functional music.......2005-06-21
In my point, Renaissance dance music must be considered as a purely functional music : i.e. something to dance to. This implies two things : the use of percusssion and the use of "outdoor" [i.e. wind] instruments.
Besides, as a music fan, I also prefer choices of consorts giving back the early polyphony.
In my point, this interpretation of Pickett [a follower & student of D. Munrow] complies with these 3 requirements. Indeed, one gets in the mood of dancing to these songs.
The Bergeret "San Rocco" or the 11. Rondo are interpreted in a superb way, if I may emphasise particular songs.
Just two presonal "addenda" when I listened to this CD for the 1st time at Kaster & Ohler in Graz, I almost began crying - such a perfect CD.
Since currently I am in the vicinity of Antwerpen, the city where Tylman Susato lived & worked, I "made my pilgrimate" to see the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk, where magister Tylman was the "Kapellenmeister" at that time.
Pity, that this item "out of stock". Fortunately, I have my own copy for 10 years.
Excellent interpretation for music of the period..........1999-05-27
Although recent commentaries feel that the music on this recording has a forcefulness to it, or too much percussive aptitude, we have to remember that this was indeed dance music of the 1500's. The interpretation of the music on this CD is one of perfection for the period and the instrumentation, also, fitting. Since none of us were there, you might want to see the movie "Elizabeth" to get a feel for the period where some of the dances are used extensively... Excellent recording.

Customer Reviews:
another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21
This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.
Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.
As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!
awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15
I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.
The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.
But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.
In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

Desert Island Early Music Disc.......2006-03-19
I actually heard this on Ohio State's Radio Station, WOSU, way
back in the summer of 1971, I'd just picked up my dog from the vet's, there was a thundershower going on, and this fantastic
album came on the air. I was immediately entranced with it, and
immediately bought the LP. It was out of print for many years,
and so last summer when I was in Seattle for Cycle One of the Ring, I was overjoyed to see a copy of this at Tower Records;and
instantly purchased it.
This is quite possibly one of the best Early Music discs ever
made, bar none. In fact, I believe it set off the Early Music
Revolution-without it, there might be a much smaller interest in
Early Music due to living history enthusiasts, such as the SCA
(Society for Creative Anachronism), Renfaire devotees, and others.
This is the germinal album that started it all: it was the first time that a historical movie had been accurately scored
with the music and instruments of the timeperiod-and David Mun-
row's Early Music Consort's lively interpretations galvanized
a belated enthusiasm for Early Music that continues to evolve
to this very day.
In short, BUY THIS ALBUM-it is a classic. And wonderful to listen to. An added frisson is the Song by King Henry VIII him-
self, "Pastime With Good Company," in his younger days he was
quite the all-round renaissance man, jouster, writer, composer,
athlete, and his music is pretty good, too.
As a companion album to this, I would highly recommend one of the other David Munrow albums to start with, Two Renaissance
Dance Bands, which is LP format was known as Music of the Court:
Music for King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I." This contrasts the
dance music heard at both courts, and the times, also a desert
island early music disc.
In short, BUY THIS DISC!!!!!!!!!!!It kicks musical Uknowwhat!!!
It completely shatters the old, long-held belief that Early Music was dull, dull, dull. Far from it. It was every bit as
lively as anything from the 18th, 19th centuries, and our own.
I'm thrilled to find this is now available on CD!.......2006-01-02
I first received this album as a gift way back in the early 70's, when I was an eleven year old Henry VIII fan. It is often thought to be the score for the BBC six-part series The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, but was actually the score for a spin-off movie by the same name, also starring Keith Michell as King Hal. The six-part series actually did not have much music in it (low budget).
This album has excellent examples of early music, performed on period instruments. It features one song written by Henry VIII, as well as many authentic period pieces. There are a couple of "cheats" - a setting of a poem purportedly written by Anne Boleyn in the Tower before her execution, and a Robin and Marian ballad which was written specifically for the movie, but the rest is authentic and authentically performed. The weakest part of the album is a poor choice in counter tenor, who performs Pastime In Good Company and the song made from the Anne Boleyn poem - he has problems with pitch and diction. Otherwise, the album is purely thumbs up.
Awesome!.......2005-12-30
This CD is actually a re-release of an old album not from the TV series but actually from a spin-off movie. The TV series is titled, "The Six Wives of Henry VIII". The movie was called "Henry VIII & His Six Wives" (which, unfortunately, was never released on video or DVD here in the states, but may be one day). Regardless, this music from the film is a wonderful example of Tudor and Elizabethan music played on authentic instruments by on of the greatest early music scholars and musicians, the late David Munrow. This is an excellent CD for fans of early music and anyone who wants to experience the true sounds of the period.
It's on the mark........2004-12-16
I saw the mini series on PBS and I now own the videos. I believe it is on a box set of DVD's too. The music on this CD is the soundtrack to the series. If you loved Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson playing Queen Elizabeth back in the 1970's you will definitely love this series. The music and the acting are so incredibly good.

Customer Reviews:
My best baroque CD.......2004-08-29
Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of them) of baroque music for brass is surprising and fascinating me with every 'song', showing facetes and diversity I always missed on my other records. Finally nothing is like the original PJ!
superbe.......2004-02-04

Astonishing.......2003-02-11
Absolutely the most breathtaking recording yet of Gabrielli, in a very crowded field of superb choices. Telarc's engineers no doubt are deserving of praise, but the playing by the Empire Brass is just stunning & your speakers will shake on deep notes at times. This fine ensemble has surpassed the already World-Class recordings of these same works of Gabrielli by the Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble, the London Brass, and even the fine recordings by the Canadian Brass. Again, I simply cannot say enough about Empire Brass' performances & Telarc's recording methods. Don't hesitate; this is the one Gabrielli disc to buy.
Togetherness? What band camp did you just roll out of?.......2003-02-05
This is, quite simply, the finest brass ensemble recording to be released in the last decade. In addition to several radiant choir pieces by Gabrieli, this CD also features the handsome Renaissance polyphony of such English masters as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. But the finest piece, perhaps appropriately, is an anonymous Gloria from 1500, which evokes that ageless celebration of the divine with a solemn religious grandeur that has seldom been equalled.
Simply marvelous! A Must Have!.......2003-01-08
This CD is a must have for anybody who likes late Renaissance or Early Baroque music, or just enjoys the sound of brass! The Gabrieli pieces sing with such power and beauty, one can only wonder what Gabrieli or Palestrina might think of now if they heard such a wonderful recording! Equal balance among all voices allows the feeling of a small chamber group, instead of a double (or sometimes triple) brass choir. What a great CD for listening to for relaxation or for just pleasure! This CD, in my opinion, rivals the Canadian Brass CD of Antiphonal music for brass that came out about ten or so years ago. Both are must haves!
The Glory of Sloppy Ensemble.......2003-01-04
In short, this CD is abysmal. Ensemble precision and togetherness is extraordinarily sloppy, the playing styles from choir to choir do not match at all, balance is abominable (Choir 1 is 'in your face' while Choirs 2 & 3 sound like they're a football fields away), and the most reverberant space in the universe could not hide the fact that Rolf's chops sound fried from the very first note of the CD!! What is Telarc thinking anyways??? Don't they know that it's over???
Anyways, if you want a truly great recording of Gabrieli, buy their 1988 release entitled "The Music of Gabrieli" on Telarc CD-80204. This was recorded in 1988 when the quintet was in its prime and is, perhaps, the greatest recording of Gabrieli's music ever made.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Christmas Music.......1999-12-11
We first heard this CD on NPR while returning home from a business trip. We ordered the CD as soon as we could. The music is as close to perfect as choral music can be. The songs are short, so the pace changes appropriately. Most of the selections are familiar Christmas carols with a few surprises. We've sent copies to our friends to enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
The best of the 4 I recently bought.......2005-04-27
For some reason I recently decided to buy a variety of Early Music CDs from Amazon. I purchased four, including this one, enough to spend $25 for free shipping. Of the four (the others being 'Praetorius: Dances from Terpsichore', 'Music of the Troubadours', and 'Music of the Crusades'), this is my favorite.
I particularly like the song whose title is translated on this page as 'Be sure to drink in moderation' - I don't know enough contemporary Dutch to know if learning to sing this as recorded on this CD would be comprehensible to native speakers of Dutch today, but I certainly hope so, because it would make a terrific ice breaker at parties in Holland.
As for the music, it's hard to imagine that a gaggle of trained geese would sound as good as these Crumhorns. This album really rocks.
a little jewel of Renaissance music.......2004-01-17
If you are looking for an album with all types of renaissance-music from the Low Countries this is the album. Different composers from that time-area and different types of music are recorded. Some songs are very modest, others makes it difficult not to hum with. This cd is a jewel worth listening. Renaissancofiles: this album should be in your collection.
