Stanley Yates enjoys an accomplished career as a virtuoso performer and recording artist, arranger, scholar, and teacher. Described as "one of an elite breed of guitarists" ( Classical Guitar Magazine, England), praised for his "musical instinct and brilliant technique" (Suonare, Italy), and noted for the "transcendent quality of his interpretation" (Fort Worth Star Telegram, USA), Stanley's performances, recordings and editions have been received with wide critical acclaim.
A past prize-winning performer in such prestigious competitions as the Myra Hess (London) and the Guitar Foundation of America, Stanley is regularly invited to present concerts, masterclasses, and lectures at leading music schools and festivals in both the United States and Europe. He has been dedicatee and/or first performer of music by such leading guitar composers as Stepan Rak, John Duarte and Angelo Gilardino, and has given first modern performances of such rediscovered works as the Premier Concerto by Ernest Shand and the Valsa Concerto by Heitor Villa Lobos. His recordings for Reference Recordings, Heartdance Music and Aeolian Recordings include chamber music, his arrangements of the Bach Cello Suites, and premiere recordings of music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, John Rutter, and other contemporary composers.
His performance articles dealing with the music of such composers as J. S. Bach and Heitor Villa-Lobos have been published internationally, in six languages, in such journals as Il Fronimo, Gitarre & Laute, Gendai Guitar, 8 Sonoro, Soundboard and Classical Guitar.
Stanley currently directs the guitar program at Austin Peay State University, home of Tennessee's Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.
"The extraordinary Stanley Yates series features some of the most important publications in the guitar canon. Ranging from student-level works to virtuosic concert repertoire, these meticulously edited editions will satisfy the musical appetites of discriminating guitarists for generations to come." - Gerald Klickstein, Guitar Department Chair, North Carolina School of the Arts "Stanley Yates' performance editions, anthologies, graded repertoire series and original pedagogical materials comprise a singularly impressive and valuable contribution to the guitar community. Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

All things old..........2005-09-26
The first two discs, entitled 'Monks and Troubadours', combine folk songs and chansons with Gregorian chant sequences - the first disc has chants for Palm Sunday (performed by the monks of Munsterschwarzach, Germany) together with songs performed by the Early Music Consort of London. The second disc incorporates chants that might be used at a church dedication (performed by the monks of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault Abbey, France) and songs again by the Early Music Consort. The difference is palpable. Gregorian chant varies significantly from the polyphonic songs of the troubadours.
The third disc is of motets, composed by Dunstable, Dufay, Binchois, Obrecht, and Desprez, some (but not all) of the great names in medieval composition. This collection includes a polytexted motet by Dunstable and more standard forms in which all voices join to sing the same words. Binchois' motet 'Gloria, laus et honor' derives from a Gregorian chant found on the first disc, with words still familiar in the modern hymn 'All Glory, Laud and Honour'.
The fourth CD inlcudes masses by Desprez and Ockeghem. Desprez is one of the greatest of the medieval composers, and his Missa L'homme arme is one of the better known; Ockeghem's mass here is one for the dead, a very common type of composition, here expertly executed. The final piece on this disc is a song written by Desprez in honour of Ockeghem, which despite not using typical mass or biblical texts, still incorporates the introit from the requiem, and as a mark of respect for the passing of Ockeghem, Desprez composed the music itself using all black notes.
This Archiv production is a stunning collection, great for the listener and great for the student. In one set, one has a broad range of music, spanning many types and hundreds of years. The production quality is very high, the music itself wonderful, the performances beautifully carried out - not much more can be asked for from a recording.

7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24
You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.
When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.
At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.

Here are five and a half hours of little-known music dating from the mid-12th century to the start of the 16th. Some of it comes from France (Provence, in particular), some from Spain (songs of praise to the Virgin Mary--many in amazing dance rhythms), some from Italy (songs of love and war of the troubadours). There are instrumentals with great vigor, complicated vocal works, chant, the expected music of praise, and a few unexpectedly ribald--almost lewd--songs. Taken a CD at a time, this is a magnificent journey, but be warned: being stuck in the Middle Ages for too long might make you yearn for those simple, high-minded times. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

A warm, joyful baroque Christmas celebration.......2004-12-07
An excellent performance.......2000-09-18
While the Boston Camerata gives its normal skilled performance, they are not as spectacular as they are on earlier music. They still are among the better interpreters of Baroque music, but it is not their speciality.
This is an excellent Christmas cd worthy of being in any collection.

Hesperion XX and others.......2007-03-28
This is the best classical music.......2001-02-05
Great collection.......2000-11-04
Highlights include:
Track 8 - Jordi Savall (gamba), Ton Koopman (harpsichord), and Rolf Lislevand (lute) turn in a brief but jaunty chamber performance of Ortiz. Left me wanting more.
Track 11 - Hesperion XX give a haunting vocal performance of Morales' Pie Jesu Domine. I'm not one to ususally appreciate this sort of music (so consider me uninformed) but I found this truly beautiful.
Track 15 - features Hopkinson Smith on the baroque guitar performing a fascinating Guerau work. Descending arpeggios like gentle, trickling waterfalls. Smith is a stunning performer. I wish he was better known in the U.S.
Track 22 - from Haydn's original orchestral version of "The Seven Last Words Of Christ On The Cross," this is the one tempestuous movement from a work of mostly subdued music. Deep, powerful string sound from Savall's Le Concert Des Nations. Very well recorded.
While I'd like to know more about the works and the composers behind them there is so much here to be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level that I can't whine too much. If you have any interest, by all means pick up this bargain. You will be introduced to a number of great performers and works.

What were these oddly named manuscripts? Hand-copied collections of music so beautifully calligraphed and illustrated that they were collected as art treasures by wealthy nobility and bankers, exchanged as gifts between heads of state, and even used as diplomatic bribes of a sort. (Charles V gave several of them to key personages to secure his election as Holy Roman Emperor.) They were produced by the workshop of Petrus Alamire (né Imhoff), who took his nom de plume from solfège syllables (e.g., do re mi), and they're among the most important sources we have today for music from the period around 1500. Naxos has put together a fascinating sampler of music from some of Alamire's manuscripts: sacred music and elegant secular art songs by composers both known (Josquin, de la Rue) and almost forgotten (Marbianus de Orto), as well as a few pieces played on wonderfully raucous shawms and trombones--all performed by the exemplary Belgian ensemble Capilla Flamenca. This disc should be a treat for Renaissance collectors (even those who don't usually care for anthologies); at the super-budget price, it's a good introduction to Renaissance polyphony as well. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
Sensitive, Compelling, and Outstandingly Rendered!.......2005-02-21
Great recording, great music........2001-04-29
That being said, I must say that I love early music, just as I love new music. For anybody who already has a good collection of early works, this release, "The A-La-Mi-Re Manuscripts," is a superb choice. It is gorgeous music that is performed brilliantly and is recorded marvelously, revealing a full and rich tone. Or, if you are just starting to get your feet wet with early music, this is still a fantastic release to purchase, for the reasons mentioned above, as well as another one. The price. Don't let it fool you. This is great music that is as good as, if not better than, any comparable release at a much greater price. And if you purchase it and decide you don't like it,you're...(not out much money). But let me go on record saying that I doubt you'll ever regret purchasing this disc. It is a truly wonderful release that raises the bar for early music recordings, regardless of the price tag.

The second of two well-filled discs of Jehan Alain's organ music performed by his sister, Marie-Claire Alain, one of today's great organists, is as desirable as the first volume. Here, she plays on three organs, each familiar to the composer. The opening Trois Danses, from the young composer's last years before his death in the 1940 German invasion, sounds especially fine on the great Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Madeleine. It's a major work, full of wit but also with a middle movement of grave portent. As in Volume 1, these are all very short pieces that manage to say a lot, concision triumphing over verbosity. Intermezzo, one of the "longer" works at five minutes, is especially remarkable for its complexity, variety of colors, and obsessive ostinato. The disc closes with the humorous Fantasmagorie, whose dancing theme, redolent of a Bedouin campfire party, is brought to an abrupt stop by a very "churchy" held note. Excellent sound, superb performances. --Dan DavisPop Music:
