Despite living in a generation of R&B females overshadowed by the indomitable Mary J. Blige, Blu Cantrell can hang. Blessed not only with a strong voice, but a jazzy style that comes across more subtly on this, her sophomore effort, than on 2001's So Blu. Bittersweet finds her teamed at various points with a handful of hot producers, ubiquitous dancehall artist Sean Paul, and some predictable lyrics, but nonetheless showcases a supple vocalist with her own mind. At the same time, Cantrell recalls some of the best of her influences on the Stevie Wonder-like "No Place Like Home" and "Happily Ever After," which would've fit in on any number of Prince records. If Cantrell continues to get the attention she deserves, she may well prove to be an artist we'll be following for decades. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars WOW SHOCK~~~~.......2006-12-22

She has a voice that is amazing and she sounds really great. How is it that we don't see her at all performing or receiving any awards??? That is a surprise to me I love Blu Cantrell when she first came out I enjoy her music. I just don't get the industry to not have her out there doing anything with an album as great as this??

5 out of 5 stars I'd Rather Sleep In The Middle.......2006-10-08

Reflecting on some of the great songs of the past sends you right back to cd's like 'Bittersweet'. Packed with great vocals and great lyrics. I thought 'Sleep in the middle' would have been a huge hit. Music is suffering and why are the great ballads being passed over for one note, one beat songs. How did Mariah manage to sell so many copies of ' Mimi'? Why is Blu not doing so well. Mariah can sing but her songs have little emotion. Blu is the complete opposite. Help someone, please help the music industry. Help the great singers to reach platinum - please promote them well. I am looking forward to more music from Blu.

4 out of 5 stars Arista records should be ashamed.........2006-07-27

Blu Cantrell has one of the best voices in the industry. "Sleep In The Middle" had the potential to be a huge hit. So why didn't Arista records promote it?? The only single released was "Breathe" which was not well promoted. If you want people to buy your products you need to PROMOTE them!!!! Maybe they should go back to college and take marketing/business classes over again. This underrated cd has some great cuts on it. "Don't Wanna Say Goodbye" and "Holding On To Love" are two more of my favorites. If you like r+b/soul music check this cd out.

5 out of 5 stars Her promoters need to be shot!!!.......2005-08-30

Blu Cantrell is very beautiful and very talented! So why then, is she not a superstar? Probably-hate to say- it is her age which I believe is in her mid thirties. That is too bad because I love Blu's voice. This album is very different in the fact that Blu's voice is powerful but with a slight jazz style. Her lyrics are very mature and is straight "grown folks music" that should be appreciated. On Sleep in the Middle Blu really blows the song out of the water! I also like Unhappy and Let her go! Blu emotes a certain type of pain and joy (which ever type of song at the time) that isn't found in too many artists. She knows what the hell she is talking about yall! I think Blu Cantrell's music is very focused and it almost seems as if Blu isn't following any cut song format... just singing!
She does uptempo too. Breathe(with Sean Paul) and Impatient(with Lil Kim and Fat Joe).Happily Ever After that is very jazzy!
I recommend this Cd highly. I didn't appreciate it at first but I had to realize what a gem this is!
My favs: Sleep in the Middle, Unhappy, Let her go, Risk it all, and Breathe

2 out of 5 stars A buy.... but only if you must........2005-03-13

Not the worst R&B I've ever heard, but she's no Billy H., or even Erykah B. Something is missing here but it's difficult to say exactly what. This album is technically proficient, yet lacks the sexual subtlety or painful authenticity of a really great musical work. If your looking for either of these qualities, then go try Billy's stuff. Buy this to bop your head, but buy Billy to blow your mind.

Blu Cantrell is tired. Tired of no-good, wrong-doin', sweet-talkin', always-cheatin', ever-schemin' men. Luckily for listeners, the Providence, Rhode Island native (discovered by Arista CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid) has decided to settle her scores in song. In the process, she delivers a gorgeously heartfelt soul album that manages to avoid no-scrubs, bills-bills-bills clichés, and get down to the business of broken-heart healing. Lacing scats into melismas and blues runs into R&B riffs, this torch-singing newcomer doesn't just take it to church with her debut: she takes it to the dimly lit juke joint, the crowded club, and the smoky underground cafe. Transitioning effortlessly from starry-eyed breathlessness to Eartha Kitt growl, to full-throttle, shiver-inducing wail, Cantrell incants catharsis with haunting ballads like "That One," in which she muses upon finding a soulmate, and "I'll Find a Way," on which she offers up a glorious, show-stopping vocal transition out of the song's bridge that would do Chaka Khan proud. Cantrell, the daughter of a jazz-singing mother, also manages to succeed with up-tempo numbers here--"Hit 'Em up Style (Oops)," the album's first single, is a jubilant revenge anthem, complete with an infectious, finger-wagging, Charleston riff that should have the ladies wiggling and their fellas checking themselves--and their wallets. --Sylvia W. Chan

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2006-11-06

The Blu Cantrell CD "So Blu" is excellent. Very good music and really good songs.

1 out of 5 stars Blu-Hoo! .......2006-09-05

I remember getting this CD at a used CD store. I really liked "Hit Em Up Style," so I was really expecting a lot from her album. Well, let me tell you what happened next. I listened to "So Blu," saved "Hit Em Up Style" on my computer, took the CD back to the used CD store and got my money back. For real, "So Blu" was lousy. Too many slow songs, too many songs about some guy breaking her heart. I don't want to hear that depressing stuff. Skip this at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars So Blu.......2006-08-15

I just put this disc back into heavy rotation and had to add my two cents. This is one of the best most underrated debut albums by a female r&b singer in my collection! The shames of her situation are that (1) the label only released one single in the U.S. And although HIT 'EM UP STYLE was undeniable catchy and popular, it really did not showcase Blu's beautifully soulful voice and (2) the fact that women Blu's age and singing style have to compete with younger, flashier hip pop artists instead of people just accepting their music for what it is and not comparing it to other genres within r&b.

This disc is an excellently produced, balanced & cohesive r&b disc featuring a powerful distinct vocalist who doesn't need to hide behind a million guest rappers to make it hot and it's sad that it wasn't more widely heard.

I couldn't give it a full 5 stars because there are 2 songs that although I consider them "filler-ish", the beats and Blu's vocal performance made them interesting to listen to: WHEN I NEED YOU & I CAN'T BELIEVE.

The other songs work on all levels of music & vocal production and deserved more attention:

U MUST B CRAZY - midtempo groove that really showcases Blu's voice

I'LL FIND A WAY - a powerhouse ballad that coulda/woulda/shoulda been a huge hit

SWINGIN' - really like the production, it's a fun song with a modern twist on the "swing" sound

ALL YOU HAD TO SAY - a really jazzy/soulful cut that perfectly showcases her vocals

SO BLUE - I really like the beats & chorus of the song matched with her rap/singing style

BLUE IS A MOOD - really pretty song

10,000 TIMES & THE ONE - both feature excellent beats & chorus verses

Overall this is a well balanced r&b disc that should've been promoted better and one that I'd highly recommend to fans of this genre of music!

5 out of 5 stars So Blu.......2006-01-22

Blu has a remarkably unique voice, it's different than other singers, her voice is strong and variable.
She's also one of the most underrated singers I know.
I don't know why she is so, but I'm sure that she could be one of the best selling artist, she has potential, grace and talent.

Blu's voice is so unique and thick. She can actually sing, something that a lot of singers these days ironically lack. She hits the perfect notes and makes you want to listen, whether the song is interesting or not. You just want to hear her voice and hear the spectacular notes she can hit. Amazing first album. It's better than the second one.

Favorite songs:

I Can't Believe - Favorite song on the album. Extremely good vocal use and such a beautiful song.

I'll Find A Way - Second favorite song on the album. It's beautiful and her vocals are way out there.

Til I'm Gone - Looooove this song. It's so true and pure and beautiful.

When I Needed You - This is just an all around beautiful song.

So Blu - This song is different, it has great catchy lyrics, it's a great track.

This CD came out over eight years ago, and nothing has come close to matching it's eclectic blend of soulful lyrics, and silky smooth beats. He is "soul" before there was such a thing as 'Neo Soul'.

It's a travesty that Blu hasn't gotten the props he is so deserving of. Listening to Out of the Blu for the past eight years makes me feel enriched, yet deprived at the same time.

If I could rub a lamp, I'd bring him back. Soul music as a genre could use his kind of CPR.

Along with a bunch of Blu Cantrell's shorter R&B hits, including her biggest hit "Hit Em Up Style", you get TWO full length Andy & The Lamboy circuit mixes: The 10:33 version of Sleep in the Middle, and the 8:47 version of Breathe, which were never actually released commercially! HOT. Too bad they didn't include the Orange Factory of Make Me Wanna Scream. That would have put this disc over the top for this price.

4 out of 5 stars Good Music for the Right Price.......2006-03-06

Hit 'Em Style: Chart and Club Hits of Blu Cantrell is an album that's hard to beat. The first rather nice aspect is the price. I don't know about you, but I'm getting tired of paying $18.99 a CD when I may only like one or two songs. On this gem of a record, you get all of Blu's hits, without the other stuff you don't want. There's the undeniably infections Hit 'Em Style (Oops!) and the slower, but still addicting single Breathe. Perfect for someone like me who doesn't want all of her songs, just the mainstream ones that you've heard on the radio and know you love. Thanks Blu Cantrell for giving us a greatest hits album without making us pay for the things we don't really want: A bonus DVD, a long booklet, a fold-out poster, maybe a few bsides, etc. You get your hits, and a few remixes. Perfect! The track listing is:

1. Hit 'Em Style (Oops!)
2. Breathe
3. Till I'm Gone
4. I Love You
5. So Blu
6. 10,000 Times
7. Holding On to Love

Buyer beware. This album is sold under 3 different titles. It is listed here as Mississippi Rainstorm. I bought it thinking that I was adding a new album to my collection that I did not already own. Come to find out, I did already own it, however it was under the album title Backtracks. The same 11 identical songs in the same order just under a different album title and a different record label. Further checking revealed it is also sold under the album title Somehow, Someway, Someday by yet a third record label. Dont get me wrong. I am a big John Anderson fan and I definately love his music. I love every song on this album. Just beware if you already own the album Backtracks or the album, Somehow Someway Someday then you dont need to buy this album because you already have.

Im a huge Steely Dan fan, and I thought this collection was great. The sound is raw, and I like hearing "pre-production" versions of some of my favorrite songs , like "Any World", "The Caves of Altimara" called android warehouse on this one, "Parkers Band", and "Charlie Freak". "Charlie Freak" in particular benefits from the lack of instrumentation, performed with just a piano, is a much more powerful song.
Also the CD is worth it just for "Yellow Peril", and "Sun Mountain", both of which I regret didnt make it onto a major album. I strongly reccomend this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Recorded in a Garage With free standing mics.......2005-07-09

I consider myself a BIG Steely Dan, Fagen, Becker fan...and unless you like to spend money just to be able to say that you have everything ever published by SD, you won't want to spend money on this CD. Sounds recorded in a garage, live, bad piano, some drinking and VERY dated...say 35 years ago. I miss the deep musicality of Aja, Nightfly, Whack and even Against Nature.

4 out of 5 stars different but the same.......2004-08-08

this is agood cd,seems like demo recordings,my version also called come back baby has 21 tunes all but 2 from this cds listing and more, overall good recordings,a few are just piano and vocals an essential recording for huge fans, new fans should try pretzel logic or,the newer two against nature, then get this if you like them.

The 2nd album from blu cantrell shows her happier side with smooth, sensual beats such as 'i love you','happily ever after','risk it all' and the stevie wonder sampled 'no place like home'.Although some tracks might seem annoying at first,['impatient'and 'all you had 2 say'] but they later grow on you.Although this cd might not be perfect the beauty is in the voice we hear from an extremely talented woman. The cd also includes the 2 hits'breathe' and 'hit em up style' but after the quality of this release we can be sure 2 see blu cantrell for many years 2 come.

Little Gem //--// From The Enterprise Newspapers, Cape Cod: "Very melodic, harmonically rich, and dynamic in rhythmic and emotional intensity" is how Cape Cod guitarist Pat Ryan describes his new CD of contemporary jazz, "Blu Mulcru." "There are some really fine musicians on the recording," he added. "Jorge Roeder has recorded with Herbie Hancock; Perry Rossi has performed for President Clinton; Steve Langone is one of the most in-demand jazz drummers in Boston, especially with regard to Brazilian-flavored jazz; and Bill Jones is a rising star on the tenor saxophone who played a gig with Wynton Marsalis this past summer." The music is accessible but complex, great to focus in on at high volumes, but also relaxing as ambient background music. The CD offers beautiful guitar work reminiscent of Pat Metheny, post-modern Brecker-esque saxophone, lush piano textures, and energetic bass and drum grooves propelled by shimmering cymbal work. "Hit 'Em Up Style" is an INCREDIBLE song!! Special thanks to Dallas Austin [Madonna/Britney Spears/Kelis/Pink tunesmith], who wrote this all by himself!! This song may seem kinda 'meh' when you imagine it in your head, but when you actually listen to it you will ADORE it!!! By far, to this day, Blu's best song ever. She has an INCREDIBLE voice-she's got that Christina Aguilera vibrato. But sadly, other than the also infectious "Breathe," this may be Blu's *only* good song. Almost every single other song of hers is a dreadfully dull ballad. But!! Get this single, u will never regret it!!

...any man in their right mind would cheat on Blu Cantrell? It's like what comedian DC Curry noted about Angela Bassett in 'Waiting to Exhale'. "Are you crazy? Who would do Angela Bassett wrong as fine as she is?" Hilarious, too, is the "and that's worth that, now" line like baby girl is sliding the credit card at the checkout at Saks Fifth. I also like the clarinet sample. It sounds like they took it from one of those old B&W mystery movies where you know something scandalous is about ready to happen. A nize, nize slice of new style R and B...

    5 out of 5 stars Blu Cantrell's song rocks!.......2001-12-30

Blu Cantrell's hilariously funny song has my own mother bopping in the car whenever she hears it. My mom, always known to be a quiet, conservative, music-enjoyer, loves "Hit 'Em Up Style". As you can imagine, I am shocked by this display of teen craziness coming from a middle-aged woman. However, I have to agree with her somewhat wild taste. The song is upbeat, has great lyrics and I just have to give it 5 stars.
