4 out of 5 stars Dean soundtrack melange has better version.......2005-08-16

The five cuts from EAST OF EDEN and the four cuts from REBEL were lifted directly from the film soundtrack music masters, but pressed onto lp and 45 rpm in mono only. The three pieces from GIANT are poor. These pieces had to be short in order to fit on 45 rpm formats as well as lp, so no more than 3.5 minutes from each cut could be recorded onto the vinyl pressings.

You can find all the music from EDEN and REBEL presented here plus lots more from both films' musical tracks in the album A TRIBUTE TO LEONARD ROSENMAN. John Adams conducts the London Sinfonietta, perfectly capturing the original orchestrations and tempi -it's like listening to the film's track, but in full stereo and you get lots more music for your money. Stick to that one and leave this one alone.

5 out of 5 stars Really great movie music!.......2003-06-25

Without any doubt, James Dean is and will be one of the most remembered actors in a whole galaxy of movie stars.
Although his career covered only three feature movies, they still stand as classics, and so does the music!
For the first two features "East Of Eden" and "Rebel Without A Cause", the producers turned to Leonard Rosenman, who (although these were some of his first works) created outstanding scores for both.
While "East Of Eden", JD's first major movie, is an outstanding symphonic work (based on the never-forgotten main theme), "Rebel Without A Cause" includes more jazzy tones.
Warner-veteran Dimtri Tiomkin scored the final of the three features, "Giant". Although I regard all three scores among my favorite soundtracks, I think, "Giant" is the most outstanding. Tiomkin's variations of the three main themes (Giant, There Has Never Been Anyone Else But You, Jett Rink) are nostalgic treasures, nobody should miss! I can't wait, when they're finally going to release the entire score! The two cuts from ?Giant? included here are the ?Giant? theme and ?There Has Never Been Anyone Else But You?. These two tracks do not appear in the movie in this form, but were recorded to promote the film. As a bonus, the producers have added Mitch Miller?s ever-popular recording of ?The Yellow Rose Of Texas?.
Last, but not least, this album is the best possibility to get the soundtrack to these three great movies! Previous issues included drastical hiss and other noise or were taken directly from the music and effect track of the movies!

5 out of 5 stars True Tribute.......2007-03-11

It may seem odd to honor a SoCal punk band like the Offspring with a string tribute, but i can't see a better way to pay tribute than with a genre so wildly different and unthinkable. The fact that string tribute actually works demonstrates the strength of their compositions and owes a lot to the masterful music arrangement and production. Music is about ever evolving ideas and genre bending, and musicians are supposed to take one another's music and challenge our preconceived notions. I especially recommend tracks 2 - The Kids Aren't Alright, 6 - Self Esteem and 8 - Want you Bad. The original composition - Off String, does a beautiful job of capturing the spirit the music and definitely holds its own against the other tracks. This is a must have for the true Offspring fan as well as anyone else looking for an irreverent take on this genre.

3 out of 5 stars Too Literal.......2006-02-08

The string quartet tribute to these Offspring songs are, in my opinion, a bit too literal. They try too hard to stick - strictly - to the original song and sometimes it produces awkward sounding music. For example, I think the best piece on this CD is the original song composed by the group performing in this CD. In a sense this is less a tribute than a translation, and the Offspring did just fine with their original instruments. Offspring fans might enjoy this CD, but I would reccomend any string quartet tribute - done by Todd Mark Rubenstein and David Davidson - to your other favorite band.

4 out of 5 stars Think Metallica -> Apocalyptica.......2005-11-27

If you were to take an accoustic version of the featured Offspring songs, then have Apocalyptica cover them, this is probably what you would get.
This isn't a disk *by* the Offspring, it's a string tribute to them. It's good for when you want some Offspring, but in a relaxing background form. The music is wonderfully arranged for the most part, with a few sparse moments not quit living up to what I think they could have. Overall, if you can pick this up for a decent price, it is definitely a must-have for a true Offspring fan who can appreciate music that's a little on the classical side.

1 out of 5 stars IT SUCKS ASS.......2005-08-25

i hate it i hate it i hate it

its dumb, it sucks, and its embarassing.

This is an utter disgrace to my favorite band. How can you POSSIBLY compare orchestra to THE OFFSPRING???? Plus, the orchestra sucks. Want some offspring? buy a REAL cd!

We loved this piano version of the Shrek sound track. It was much better than we anticipated it would be.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes Silly, but Overall Pretty Good.......2005-10-19

This CD was pretty good. The slower songs: It is you (I have loved) and Hallelujah, were really great. But the faster songs All Star, Bad Reputation, etc. were just kind of silly. I bought this for It Is You (I HAve Loved) for my wedding. You should definitely listen to clips before committing to buying, but I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Every last note..........2006-06-14

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Affectionately referred to as the "Scrabble album" for its playful cover art, Sondheim Evening: A Musical Tribute was the first of many tribute albums celebrating the music of Broadway's greatest modern composer, Stephen Sondheim. In 1973, however, he was still a relative newcomer whose work as a lyricist was more celebrated than his early efforts as a composer, which included Company and Follies. Accordingly, this tribute deviates from later efforts by including a few songs for which he only provided lyrics, but somewhat surprisingly, it also sets a trend by unearthing rarely heard selections--from Saturday Night and Evening Primrose--as well as songs cut from various shows, including A Little Night Music, which had just premiered a few weeks earlier). And that cast! Members of the original companies--including Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera, Dorothy Collins, Alexis Smith, and Donna McKechnie, just to name a few--as well as Sondheim himself singing "Anyone Can Whistle" from the piano. Obviously, later tribute albums have more material to work with and similar all-star rosters (though they sometimes resort to gimmicks such as men singing women's songs), but this one has yet to be topped. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of Sondheim.......2006-07-22

The best Sondheim collection available. the live performances add greatly to the album. All the performances are fresh and fun, or heartfelt and lovely. Added bonus is the performance of unused songs from several shows. The wholething is wonderful. Only wish it had been done more recently to include the shows of the past 30 yrs. Could be quite an evening. The Carnegie Hall tribute album is glossier and more recent, but I like this better.

5 out of 5 stars Marry Me a Little.......2005-08-15

This is an old favorite that I already had on LP, but decided to finally upgrade to CD. Obviously, I like it or I wouldn't have bothered.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sondheim Concerts ever.......2004-01-13

I bought this set used on vinyl when I was 17. Then again on cassette when I was 25. I'm now about to buy it on cd. Why? Hands down it is the best concert album of his works. Nothing gimimicky, just a great evening of song, most with the original performers recreating their moments. Also, there are more than a handful of cut songs and obscure lyrics. For you Sondheim buffs: the original lyrics to "We're Gonna Be All Right" which got sanitized during the tryout becuase Dorothy Rodgers thought the lyrics were too racy. And a previous reviewer complained that there were No performance of Night Music songs on the disc, Here's why. The Cast Album had just been recorded by Columbia and they held the rights to any of the original cast recording of the songs. During "Liasons" and "Send in the Clowns" the Engineers from Warner Brothers (the original Label) had to shut off the mics. A shame...written accounts of the evening state that Glynis Johns had the house in tears with Send in the Clowns. Still and all, a worthwhile album.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Sondheim fans!.......2002-01-01

Aside from featuring a song ("Two Fairy Tales") that appears on no other tribute/compilation CD that I'm aware of, and several other rarely performed tunes, this tribute has another significant feature: All the singers appeared in, or were intended to appear in, original Sondheim productions, so the net effect is to provide some tantalizing examples of how these songs sounded live on stage by their original singers.

There are so many treasures on this CD! Examples: If you doubted that Beth Howland owns "Getting Married Today," this rendition will put your doubts to rest; she actually sings it faster than on the OBR of Company! Similarly, while there have been plenty of decent renditions of "Broadway Baby," Ethel Shutta proves why she was the first (and best). Nancy Walker's "I'm Still Here" ranks with the greatest versions of this song. And what a joy it is to hear Angela Lansbury, by this time an experienced musical thespian, singing songs from Anyone Can Whistle with considerable assurance.

One small complaint I have is that while the cast of the then-current A Little Night Music appears, none of them sings any songs on their own; they merely provide part of the chorus (and Hermione Gingold was one of the "Beautiful Girls). As I am a Len Cariou fan, I was disappointed that I didn't get to hear him live. Still, this is a sensational collection that should delight both Sondheim fans and musical theatre fans in general.

5 out of 5 stars I wish this CD would never end!.......2000-04-13

This is probably my favorite of the Sondheim compilation CDs I have. It's a live concert recorded in 1973, right in the middle of the "Golden Age" of Sondheim. It's got the great songs one would expect ("Being Alive", "America", "Broadway Baby") and it also has a good handful of songs that were cut from his shows...all of them on par or better with the ones that were kept in! It stars many of the members of "Company" and "Follies" along with biggies like Chita Rivera and Angela Lansbury, whose "Me and My Town" is a riot. My only complaint is the sound quality. But if anything, it just gives the recording more character! This is a great CD and I couldn't consider my Sondheim collection complete without it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE!!.......2007-04-15

This concert IS The Beatles NOTE FOR NOTE!!! You won't hear a single mistake! Their looks are fair, but UNIMPORTANT! It's the MUSIC, baby!! The best thing about this CD is you can hear the Beatles as they were meant to be heard in their "live" shows, but could not hear anything, because of the screaming fans.

The only thing better is to see 1964 The Tribute LIVE!! The only drawback to this CD and 1964 The Tribute, don't expect to hear any music outside of the 1963-64 era!

1964 The Tribute is the second greatest Beatle Band in the world, closely behind "The Fab Four" from S. California, who play Las Vegas regularly. But they don't have a CD for sale, so you'll have to see them live!

BUY THIS CD and BUY their other CD, "Nine Hours in November", which is a similiar, but a totally different take on the Beatles' early music, as it is a "rough, but excellent" studio takes, recorded in just 9 hours, song for song without stopping, just as the Beatles did in the early recording days. If you are expecting a note for note rendition on this one, you better buy "ALL YOU NEED IS LIVE!", instead.

BUY This CD!! and their other CD

    Album Description

This is a one-man tribute to Depeche Mode, complete with two new instrumental interludes. The album reinvents eleven of the most underappreciated Depeche Mode songs and also includes the track 'Ponytail Girl' which is a Color Theory original that has been mistaken for a Depeche Mode bonus track from the Exciter album! Color Theory is the musical alter-ego of Huntington Beach singer/keyboardist/songwriter Brian Hazard. Hazard creates piano-driven electronic pop, combining the emotional intensity of Tori Amos with the spacious backdrop of subtle pads and muted rhythms. Depeche-Mode.com wrote of this tribute CD, ''We give it the thumbs up and warmly recommend that all Mode fans pick this one up.''

I can't understand... This is pitiful... Basic sounds, bad vocals...
Depeche Mode don't deserve this kind of atrocity.
I have a lot of DM's tributes, but this is one of the worst tributes ever.
Please, keep making your own work... not DM songs!!!

2 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode, not Color Theory, is one of the greatest bands ever.......2006-11-17

This is actually the first time I've ever submitted a review but as I was browsing through reviews of this product I felt compelled to do so. Some of the reviews here are fully of praise for these covers even goin so far as to suggest that these "covers" are better than the original, better than the real deal. Now, I've heard the tracks and while Hazard does seem to have talent and should be commended for his appreciation of the Mode, IMO as a lifelong student of DM since 1985, he is not in Depeche's league. "Martin Gore needs lessons from Color Theory"?! Tracks like "I am you" and "Sister of night" are superior to the originals? Am I in some sort of incomprehensible netherworld where people have lost their mind? How can a remake be better than the original? The "cover" artist here is not creating sonic magic from "nothing" (to cite another classic DM track); he is merely embellishing on what already existed there in terms of lyrics, chords, melodies, and song structure. I agree that Hazard's versions are more creative than some of the countless others out there, but they still sound lightweight in comparison to Depeche Mode's minor chord majesty. He offers a lighter take on the Mode that for me reduces the drama and impact of the original songs. While some reviewers might enjoy the uptempo versions of classics like "I want you now" and "I am you," these DM "fans" seem to miss the point of the originals. "I want you now" is meant to be desperate and oppressive and challenging. If that 's not one's cup of tea, then perhaps the lighthearted bounce of Erasure, et al. is more fitting for their palette. Also, DM's "Sister of Night" is flat and emotionless. Are you kidding me? That haunting song is punctuated by one of Gahan's most yearningly tragic vocals! The sliding windbells towards the end of the song are goosebump inducing. Hazard's take on these songs dilute the songs of their original atmosphere. Now, remember the only reason such criticism is being leveled is because the covers, some of which are being heralded as superior, need to be put in perspective against the achievement of the original songs. Also, I'm sorry but Hazard's voice does not come near to matching Gore's rich tenor, let alone Gahan's dynamic, sexually charged yet tender vocalizations. Depeche Mode are Depeche Mode because they occupy a unique position in music. They have created their own genre that has lasted over a half century. They have stuck to their vision and we as fans should be appreciative rather than dismissive of that. I can't think of a song of theirs that I dislike, not out of blindness but out of the fact that I'm a true devotee who looks forward to what their genius will reveal next. Lastly, do you think Hazard could sell out stadiums around the globe? DM, the definitive and perhaps only arena/stadium electronic rock band can!!! Well, to quote a comrade of DM's, Robert Smith, I've perhaps said too much, been too unkind. As a Mode maniac, I just needed to get that off my chest!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be dismissed as just another DM tribute..........2006-07-11

I am usually a sceptic when it comes to tribute albums, especially when it comes to a group that I hold in such high regard. However, Color Theory provides a fresh take on these much loved but often overlooked Depeche Mode songs. Intricately crafted synthpop arrangements accompany beautiful vocals to add a new emotional dimension to each song. Upon first listen, the surpringly upbeat "I Want You Now" and the passionate "Surrender" particularly stand out, bringing out the depth and emotional complexity of the original songs. Worth a listen for both the devoted Depeche Mode fan and the casual listener.

4 out of 5 stars covering good territory.......2005-11-04

inspiring interpretations that add any further dimensions and textures to quite wonderful songs.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for interesting DM covers.......2005-07-16

What I look for in a cover is something that maintains the integrity of the original but adds something new or interesting, and this album definitely makes the grade. (in contrast to most of the covers on 'for the masses,' which add nothing to the originals)

First and foremost, the piano on 'but not tonight' is incredible. rain. for me it was dangerous to touch this song since i love the original so much, have the single, etc. but the piano, the piano...it goes straight to my heart, and i can see the raindrops plopping and bouncing off the streetlamp lit ground with the piano strokes, and dave gahan dancing around in circles with his arms out, face turned up to the sky, ruining his leather boots in the rain.

My other favorite on this album is 'it doesn't matter', with these lovely bells. and i like how it ends it with the line "i am happy, i am happy, i am happy even though you're not here now." which is a better closing line, and the repetition of the "I am happy" part leaves the listener to think about whether the singer is truly happy and ok with the situation, or whether he is trying to convince himself that he is happy.

The pace and dancy-ness of "i want you now" gives it a different feel, makes it lighter, flirtier, a little less...desperate, sleazy....
conversely, the heavy beat on 'one caress' makes it a little more insistent, with a deeper emotion, or urgency, rather than the more sweet character of the original.

The ending of 'world full of nothing' is this very interesting, beautiful, eastern-esque instrumental interlude, like peacefully pondering love, pondering the world, is it full of nothing? maybe it's peacefully full of nothing?

"I am you" is better than the original, which I find boring except for the ending with the orchestration. Color Theory's version is a little faster, with a more interesting instrumentation. It changes dynamics and uses silence in ways that make the song move somewhere, so that you can FEEL something- it's far more emotional than the original.

"sister of night" is another song in which color theory makes it loads better than the original by making it more emotional. For me, the original is largely one emotion and every time I want it to get more or less intense, it doesn't. So the original feels so flat for me.
Color theory's version has an interesting intro, with a different beat and instruments/sounds, and it sets it up in a way to allow for darkness of different kinds, it can increase intensity so that it becomes more urgent, then releases the tension with the piano which is, for me, calming, but not necessarily less dark.

Fever: A Tribute to Peggy Lee is an album representation of the show of the same name that jazz vocalist Connie Evingson created for the Illusion Theatre in Minneapolis. It collects a variety of songs associated with Lee, from her early days with Benny Goodman ("Why Don't You Do Right") to her signature song, "Fever," to some of the many songs she wrote herself ("I Love Being Here with You," "It's a Good Day," "I'm Gonna Go Fishing," Lady and the Tramp's "He's a Tramp"). A solid vocalist, Evingson won't make anyone forget Lee, but that's not the point here. Fever is nothing less than a pleasure. --David Horiuchi

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Connie delivers..........2002-09-22

Connie offers up a good selection of Peggy Lee songs on this tribute album, and puts her own spin on the songs without being disrespectful to the image or style of Lee. In short, that is what a tribute album should be all about, and Connie delivers in spades.

"Some Cats Know" is the title track of another Connie Evingson album, and again here she offers up the tune in a slow and sizzling (and sexy), way. "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" is done in a more sprightly, but no less smoky way. "I Don't Know Enough About You" is again, typical of Connie's style.

"He's A Tramp" and "Fever" are of course Peggy Lee standards. She owned these songs in a way few artists can ever hope to own a song as their signature tune. Dino had "Return to Me", for example, and it just sounds wrong coming from someone else. Connie does quite well on both tunes here, again, putting her own spin on the Lee classics while not straying too far from the sound Lee fans remember.

The only poor choice here would have to be "Is That All There Is?" Peggy Lee could make it work perfectly. I've never really cared for the song anyway, but Connie is too young, and perhaps even too innocent, to pull off the world-weary sound required for this song.

Other than that, the CD is rich with Connie's wonderful vocals, and the accompaniment is great. Don't listen to the naysayers. Try this one out.

2 out of 5 stars Tribute to Miss Lee falters.......2000-08-15

Miss Evingson's lithe, restrainted, clear voice is a nice listen, but she falters in this tribute to Peggy Lee , who was a perfectionist when it came to just about everything on her recordings. Everything from the song selection to orchestrations seems off on this outing. "Is that all there is?" comes across as a plodding hokey reworking of Lee's life long question and it lacks Lee's ambivalence. "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" included here is also out of place and the Peggy-penned "I Love Being Here with You" comes complete with a clunky clarinet solo and lacks Lee's easy going sultry styling. Evingson, however, should not be faulted for paying tribute to Miss Lee, though her attempt, while admirable, doesn't measure up.

    5 out of 5 stars A Well-Crafted Tribute.......2000-07-28

Connie Evingson's cd, Fever, is truly a tribute to Peggy Lee that foregoes the notion of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. While not straying far from the jazz style used by Ms. Lee, Ms. Evingson puts her own stamp on these classic tunes, singing them with the high level of craftsmanship they deserve. Evingson does an excellent job in enunciating the lyric and bringing across the mood of the song whether it be soulful, sultry, or sunny. Her musicians provide excellent backing, in particular Dave Karr on the reeds.

5 out of 5 stars Catch The Fever.......2000-07-28

Connie Evingson's, "FEVER", a tribute to Peggy Lee, rates a standing ovation. She has a vocal quality reminiscent of the great Miss Lee but comes forth with all the freshness and verve that this material longs for and rarely receives. If you rate Peggy Lee as "Sultry", you'll agree that Connie Evingson is "SULTRY". If you feel the "Blues" when Miss Lee sings, you'll feel the "BLUES" when Miss Evingson delivers. Sanford Moore (piano),Terry Burns(bass), Phil Hey and Nathan Norman (drums), Reuben Ristrom and Joan Griffith (guitar) and Dave Karr(reeds) obviously understand the music and how it should be played for Connie Evingson's performance. They are top rate players as is Miss Evingson a top rate singer. In the opinion of a guy who plays 80 to 100 recordings a week, Connie Evingson's "Fever" is a fever to catch!

4 out of 5 stars Good Singing Is Always a Pleasure.......2000-07-26

It's a daunting task to record a tribute album to someone the stature of a Peggy Lee, if for no other reason than every song will be compared to the original. Nonetheless, Minneapolis-based Connie Evingson pulls off this difficult task, and does it with grace and aplomb. This should be no surprise given Evingon's enormous talent. While she uses similar arrangements, she doesn't try to sound like Lee. Her voice is deep and sultry like Lee's, but it's also somewhat lighter. To her credit, Evingson's tribute is not only to songs that Lee sang, but to also to those Lee wrote, reminding us that the multitalented Ms. Lee was also a composer of note. This is good stuff and should be on the shelf of everyone who enjoys and appreciates the vocal art.
