Amazon.com essential recording

For decades, there were only three complete collections of Dvorák's symphonies: this one; Rowicki's with the same orchestra; and Kubelik's with the Berlin Philharmonic. Kertész offers the most rustic, gutsy interpretations of all. Famous for his dislike of rehearsals, he allows the London Symphony to make a much rougher sound than his colleagues tolerate, and though not the last word in polish, the results have a spontaneous charm that's pretty hard to resist. More to the point, Dvorák's early symphonies (Nos. 1 to 5) remain sadly neglected, and each one of them is full of gorgeous tunes cloaked in mellifluous orchestration. At budget price, this set now costs less than it did on LP in the 1960s. How can you do better than that? --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, passionate versions.......2007-06-23

The late Istvan Kertesz continues to amaze, with this spectacular reissue of his 1960s Dvorak symphonies cycle. These versions each compare well with or exceed the legendary recordings by Ancerl, Szell, Talich, et al. Sound quality is excellent, and the mix on the orchestra is almost always just right, balancing strings, brass, and percussion. Compared to some Czech recordings, the woodwinds volumes are a bit weak, which is unfortunate because woodwinds are one of Dvorak's specialties. If you have no other set of Dvorak symphonies, or have 10 copies of "From the New World" and no copies of Symphonies 1, 2 or 3, then this is a must-have set. From the opening bars of Symphony No. 1, you'll agree you're in the presence of greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recording.......2007-06-03

Friends and CD-guides told me this was the best. And they were right.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of music!.......2007-05-24

Along with Piotr Tchaikovsky, Antonin Dvorak was probably the most prolific composer of the Romance period. He composed for just about every genre of classical music except ballet, and is known for a wide variety of works. Some of his most famous are his symphonies. He wrote 9, out of respect for Beethoven, and like the German master, the last one is the most widely recognized. But like Beethoven, all 9 symphonies are incredible pieces of music in their own right. This set has all 9 symphonies, along with several other popular orchestral works. The sound quality is good, the orchestration is great, and the choice of music is great. All the pieces are dramatic, with melodies that range from powerful to awe-inspiring to melancholy. Every piece of music in this set is purely in the Romantic style; full of emotion, and many are inspired by folk tunes from Eastern Europe. All in all, a great set, and for a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Kertesz or Kubelik in the Dvorak symphonies?.......2006-05-03

Although decades old, the two analog sets of Dvorak symphonies from Kertesz and Kubelik remain the front-runnters. From the mid-Sixties onward Decca has been so satisfied with the groundbreaking Kertesz cycle, the first to bring Sym. 1-6 to the general listening public outisde Czechoslovakia, that the company has rarely re-recorded any but the last three, most famous symphonies. DG, on the other hand, didn't release Kubelik's Sym. 1-6 until the digital era (1988, I believe), keeping them in the vualts and out of competiiton with Kertesz.

Now both sets are offered at basically the same price on 6 mid-line discs, with deep discounts on the used market. The difference between the two is quite marked musically, however. Kertesz comunicates the thrill of discovery in the early symphhonies. Amazingly, he had never conducted them before, and their vibrancy and inner life lift my spirits every time I hear them. The LSO didn't know these pieces, either, but play with rousing commitment and vivacity.

By comparison, Kubelik sounds rather correct and staid. He often chooses marginally slower tempos, and his enthusiasm for letting the dance rhytyms become exciting is limited. The Berlin Phil. seems not to catch on to the Slavonic folk idiom, which gets played far too straight (Dvorak had the same problem with Greman orchestras in his lifetime and was only accepted in Vienna and Berlin at first as a kind of naive, folk-flavored Brahms). As to sonics, the Decca set holds up well, being a bit bright at times but otherwise detailed and forward. DG, unforunately, gave Kubelik's later symphonies (#7-9) harsh, glaring sound that makes his readings sound brash; there's an unpleasant sting to the sound at higher volumes. This problem seems less in the earlier symphonies (the cycle was recorded over a longer period than Kertesz's and thus has more variable sound). I do not know if the current re-issue also includes remastering.

It's regrettable that in the interest of economics Decca has cut out several of Kertesz's most interesting fillers, such as the Hussite Over., though they can be found on other CDs from him. We get the Carnival Over. on both sets, after which Kertesz gives us the "My Homeland" and "In Nature's Realm" Over., while Kubelik offers the Scerzo capriccioso and The Wild Dove tone poem, both performed by his Bavarian State Orchestra rather than the Berliners.

As msut be obvious by now, I don't feel the two sets are competitive artistically. Kubelik was a major conductor and dedicated to Dvorak, but his best work isn't here. Kertesz, though not native born to the composer as Kubelik was, found a special affinity for Dvorak, and his cycle is one of the small miracles of Sixties recording. Perhaps not so minor considering that no one has bettered him in the early symphonies for forty years.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing performances.......2005-03-28

This orchestra really has a rich, powerful sound, but can still give deep emotional sounds, all of which are needed to perform Dvorak. I doubt one can find finer performances of these symphonies, and the other works included in the set are very well chosen. The performances of each symphony are incredible, the sound quality is very good, and as I said before, the orchestra is wonderful. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

1 out of 5 stars Do not Buy.......2007-02-21

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

2 out of 5 stars Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

4 out of 5 stars It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. 4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

4 out of 5 stars Salute to America.......2006-07-27

Very similar in quality and music to I Love A Parade and a very upbeat reminder of why we are a patriotic nation. The arrangements and quality of the songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice but..........2005-06-29

It is not the best CD that I have bought but it is an honest one. The orchestration is good, the choice of tunes is excellent and the tunes are well played. As you know, it is always difficult to say : I like it or I hate it because hearing a CD is a question of personal point of view. In my case, I may not say that I like it or I hate it, I prefer some other orchestration but it us a good CD.

2 out of 5 stars Ho-Hum.......2005-06-08

I wanted some rousing marching music. This album is half asleep. The sound quality is poor. Apparently Mr. Williams writes better music than he conducts.

John Williams/Boston Pops.. Salute to America.

And they do! They salute America! This is a wonderful C.D
Battle Hymn of the Republic, is great..

New York, New York, will bring tears to your eyes!
12 renditions in all..

All these are performed wonderfully, and well worth the money!

I would recommend this to anyone who loves patriotic music, it will stir the heart and soul of Americans....

5 out of 5 stars Full-Spirited.......2000-09-02

I'm a classical music/opera person for the most part. But I find this CD entralling. Even the organization of the CD is ideal-almost like a symphony--with the rousing Candide Overture and the musical medleys at the beginning, the patriotic songs as the B section, and the Dixieland and other music from American musicals to finish up. And I particularly like the orchestration of the medleys. A wonderful CD.

This lovely CD features Renée Fleming singing religious music in an unaffected, lovely manner. Many favorites are here: both the Bach/Gounod and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria," each offered with long breaths and soft tone; "Rejoice Greatly" from Messiah, delivered with virtuosity and gleaming sound, and "He Shall Feed His Flock," also from Messiah, sung in a smooth, laid-back manner. Bits of the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria are welcome, as is the gorgeous "L'Adieu des Bergers" from L'Enfance du Christ. In the prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel, Fleming is joined by the splendid Susan Graham, and a version of "Amazing Grace" features Mark O'Connor on violin. Two excerpts from Mozart's Mass in C Minor, pieces by Reger and Franck, and a few surprises round out this devotional CD. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars I hate to be rude, but . . ........2007-05-06

As stated earlier, I hate to be rude. However, Renee Fleming is not one of the greatest singers that I have heard. At many times, it sounds as if she is drunk, sliding into her notes at times. She also has a habit of hitting a note, and then quickly moving up or down for "dramatic effect". I'm sorry, but I just cannot listen to this. I know that everyone has their own opinions, and this is mine.
She is still a beautiful woman, and always will be. I have seen her concerts online, and she ISN'T bad, it's just that she doesn't have what I'm looking for in an opera singer!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-07

I had seen this program on PBS and wanted the CD. Wonderful selection
of music and Renee Fleming's outstanding voice.

4 out of 5 stars Sacred Songs.......2007-01-21

I always look for new presentations of Christmas songs. Rene Flemming did an excellent job in this recording. She has a super voice but sometimes the words of the song get lost in her singing style

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of Fleming's CDs so far.......2006-12-07

There are only two cuts on this CD I tend to flip past (Amazing Grace and the Leonard Bernstein cut), but other than them, I totally love the rest! The cuts in German are divine! I could listen to this CD over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and beautiful.......2006-07-20

I've always loved Renee Fleming's singing and this most recent album is just beautiful in every way. A rich voice, beautiful singing and a devout and magnificent artist. She makes even the most notorious evergreens come to life anew. I enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This!.......2007-05-20

Whether you are a Haydn connosieur, or even a newbie curious in regard to this work (perhaps the greatest achievement in String Quartet history), this recording is outstanding. Although I might put the historically performed rendition of these works by the Quatuor Mosaique on a higher level of preference, it's simply my own personal taste (I often prefer performances of these works on period instruments...you might not). You can't go wrong with this cd. All the music is brought out in striking fashion by the Kodaly Q.

Don't even consider this one too much: GET it.

5 out of 5 stars Here we go again trying words.......2006-06-04

Well, it is not often in my music collection of several hundred "classical" CD's that I find music that still moves me to tears. The quartets are so interesting for me on all levels and how could you find them better played? Many of Haydn's quartets are worth purchase but opus 76 has a special place in this genre. Every composer has a special area where he (not many she's unfortunately) has mastered. One thinks of Mozart and the operas or Beethoven and the symphonies. Well here is where Haydn has never been surpassed.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Music.......2006-03-08

I don't really have add anything about this CD. The performances are excellent as is the recorded sound. I would like to say that new classical music lovers who have yet to advance to chamber music, should really enjoy this great music. The two named quartets are especially good with the finale of the 3rd quartet being one of my favorite movements in all of music.

5 out of 5 stars Haydn at his most enjoyable and approachable.......2005-10-28

Do the recordings on this CD rank at the greatest of Haydn's work? IMHO, no (I reserve that for certain of his symphonies and masses); however, is everything you eat chock full of all of the nutrients you need with only the minimum amount of calories? The artists approach the music with style and delicacy. If you are or live with an aficionado of this musical era, I encourage you to add this CD to your/his/her collection.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful recordings but be warned..........2005-09-22

if you are reading some of the other reviews saying that this music is as good as anything Mozart ever composed, beware. These quartets are excellent - and are worth owning if for no reason other than Haydn being an instrumental figure in the birth of the quartet as we know it. Haydn is credited with being a pioneer in developing independent voicing of all 4 instruments, and these mature late quartets show off his mastery of the form. However, these quartets are NOT Mozart. Haydn was an excellent composer, and while exceedingly original and inventive in his techniques and phrasings, his music does not resonate with the sheer genius of Mozart's late quartets (from K. 387 on). So if you are looking for something Mozartean here, you will not find it. If you are looking to discover more excellent music in the Classical style from the father of the Classical style, then you should definitely pick these discs up. Not only are the performances and recordings excellent, but at this price you cannot go wrong.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate music for every time of day and every mood.......2007-07-03

With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.

4 out of 5 stars Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

4 out of 5 stars exemplifying the full extent of Haydn's virtuosity.......2006-07-20

For me it is the late Haydn string quartets, more so than the late symphonies, that afford us a full demonstration of his consummate compositional mastery. For as good as the London Symphonies are, if you listen to them alongside Mozart's great symphonies they really do not quite measure up; but the late quartets are second not even to Mozart's best works in the genre, endowed as they are with magnificent complexity, ingenious subtlety, and profound sophistication.

The Op. 76 quartets are the place to start in listening to Haydn's quartets. He sometimes equaled these exemplary compositions, in earlier works as well as later ones, but he never bettered them. Op. 76 belong to that rarefied list of powerful, progressive masterworks written at the end of his life that includes the Trumpet Concerto, The Creation, Paukenmesse, and, yes, the aforementioned London Symphonies.

(Especially beautiful on this disc is the adagio of the E-flat quartet: harmonically adventurous, mysterious, and captivating, I've returned to it more than once.)

I have elsewhere stated my preference and conviction for authentic, "period instrument" performances of these works; while I do prefer the accounts of the Quatuor Mosaïques to these readings, then, I at the same time insist that these are interpretations not to be missed. Readings of the Baroque and Classical literature on modern instruments can still be very effective, if an awareness of the character and function of timbre and sonority in those historical musical languages is incorporated into playing of skill and good judgement (the academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Mariner, for example, have committed excellent performances of the late Mozart symphonies to disc on modern instruments). The Kodály Quartet are a first-rate ensemble and they dig into these pieces with expertise and enthusiasm. And for only ten dollars per disk on Naxos, you really mustn't pass on these recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Haydn's "Famous 30" Quartets.......2005-07-29

This is general review of the Naxos series of Haydn's string quartets.

You know the old saying, "you get what you pay for." This is usually true for sure ... but once in a while in life something comes around whose quality and value far exceed the price. Such is the case with the Naxos recordings of the Kodaly Quartet. These are performances of top caliber recorded with very good to excellent sound quality.

But, where to start with so many Haydn quartets? One suggestion is to get the Naxos SETS of these works which are an even more stellar bargin. You can get them at rediculously low prices used on Amazon usually. But, if you are buying one CD at-a-time (which perhaps allows for more appreciation and slower savoring), you might focus on what is known as "Haydn's Top 30." This is a list of Haydn's quartets that are recognized by many experts as his finest: Op. 3 (no. 3,5) - Op.9 (no. 2) - Op. 17 (no. 5) - Op. 20 (no. 4,5,6) - Op. 33 (No. 2,3,6) - Op. 50 (no. 6) - Op. 54 (no. 1,2,3) - Op. 64 (all) - Op. 74 (no. 1,2,3) - Op. 76 (all) - Op. 77 (no. 1,2).

Quartets prior to Op. 17 have more of a simpler, pleasant "galante" style ... Op. 20 sees Haydn fully in his "Storm & Stress" period with bold harmonies and dynamic rhythms ... By Op. 33 Haydn had moved on from the pre-Romantic-era emotive composing of Op. 20 and adopted a more lyrical style .... the quartets of Op. 64 have a really gorgeous and relaxed style ... then in Op. 76 & 77 we see the pinnacle of Haydn's quartet craft late in his life with quartets rich in intelligent form, complex part writing and more grand 'symphonic' harmonies - part due to his writing for large London audiences. A good place to start is to get one CD each from Haydn's early, middle and late periods - like Op. 3, Op. 33 and Op. 76 - and see the development that occured as Haydn literally gave birth to the modern string quartet.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring the Haydn Quartets -- Op. 76 nos. 4-6.......2004-10-05

Joseph Haydn wrote the six string quartets of opus 76 in 1797 when he was at the height of his powers. The quartets were dedicated to Haydn's patron, Count Edody, and are known as the "Erody" quartets. The first three quartets of opus 76 appear on a separate Naxos CD by the Kodaly Quartet. In fact, the Kodaly Quartet has recorded the entire series of Haydn quartets at a budget price. The opus 76 quartets in particular are music-making at its highest level. These quartets are engaging and accessible to hear and to play (they were composed to be played) and are yet filled with imagination, inventiveness, and musical content. In describing the opus 76 quartets, Karl Geiringer writes in his "Haydn: A Creative Live in Music" (p. 321) that "[e]verything here is condensed and intensified, the expression more personal and more direct." This award-winning CD by the Kodaly Quartet includes the 4,5, and 6th quartet and is a joy.

The quartet no. 4 in B-flat major is known as the "Sunrise" after the running, rising theme in the first violin, set over heavy chords, with which it opens. The first movement, marked allegro con spirito, is a movement of contrasts. As do several other movements on this CD, it features alternating sections of fast and slow sections, rising and falling solo themes, and ensemble and solo playing. The second movement, marked adagio, continues to alternate solo passages for the violin with intricate playing for the entire ensemble. There is also a lovely theme deep in the lower register of the cello. This is a slow, sad movement. The third movement is a minuet which features echoing falling two-note figures heavily accented at the end of each phrase. The trio continues the pattern established in the earlier movements by having a solo theme sing out over chords in the remainder of the ensemble. The final movement is a rondo which opens with a whimsical, song-like theme played in the ensemble. As the movement progresses, the tempo increases, and the quartet ends humorously with a whirwind version of the rondo theme.

The fifth quartet in D major is unique in that each of the four movements develop essentially the same thematic material. The opening movement is an allegretto which opens quietly and lyrically in the violin. Here again, the movement dramatically picks up in tempo near the conclusion. The second movement of the work marked "Largo cantabile e mesto" (very slow, singing, and troubled) is the highpoint of this work. The slow movement is substantially longer than the opening movement, which is itself highly unusual in a composition of this period. The movement opens with a slow stately theme followed by an intense middle section in different harmonies and then a return of the opening material. The minuet opens in the alto voice of the strings, but the most striking feature of this movement is the ruminative, running solo for the cello in the trio. The finale, marked presto, consists of a running theme over a brushing figure in the strings. It reminded me of a Russian folk tune and of Beethoven's middle quartets.

The sixth and final quartet of opus 76 is in E-flat major and brings an extraordinary end to the set. The first movement, marked allegro-allegretto, is a set of variations based on a call and response theme. The variations feature solo instruments embellishing the theme as played by the ensemble. Again, this movement masterfully alternates fast and slow sections and ensemble and solo playing. There is a great deal of counterpoint throughout. The second movement marked "Fantasia:Adagio" is full of adventurous harmonic writing based upon rapid and ambiguous movements from one key to another. In much of this movement, Haydn dispensed with the use of a key signature, giving both the music and the notation a strikingly modern flavor. The third movement, a minuet, opens with a theme with many turns and twists for the violin in its upper register. But, again, the striking portion of this movement is in the trio. Haydn writes it in an old form called the Alternativo. The pattern is a rising heavily rhythmic passage in the cello playing the major scale, followed by a descending passage playing the scale. This is a delight to follow when one is prepared for it. The finale, allegro spirituoso, is based upon a falling figure. It is light and rapid and shows Haydn's mastery of counterpoint.

The music of these quartets, and of the earlier three quartets of opus 76 is inexhaustible. This CD is an outstanding introduction to chamber music and to the music of Haydn.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2001-11-16

I certainly agree with the other reviewer on this page: With the possible addition of Op. 77 No. 1, the three quartets on this Naxos CD represent the greatest, and most appealing, quartet music that Haydn produced. And that's saying a lot because there are many other treasures among Haydn's string quartets.

Finest of all is the "Fifths Quartet," so called because of the first violinist's widely spaced intervals at the start of the first movement. Haydn is not always congenial when he writes in the minor key, but here he creates a movement of great drama and energy that is unique in his oeuvre. The other movements are just as fine, especially the remarkable canonic scherzo, a bewitching witches' dance.

But then the other quartets are no also-rans. The "Emperor" features lovely variations on Haydn's own hymn to the emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire ("Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken") and a last movement of great dash and sparkle. And the "Sunrise" has that wonderfully evocative rising figure at the beginning of the movement that gave the quartet its name.

The Kodaly Quartet, as throughout their Haydn cycle, show they are to the manner born. They caress those lovely variations with a much tenderness, then throw themselves with great abandon into the fiery "Fifths" quartet. All of which makes for just about the best performances of these quartets on disc. Naxos adds a warm yet clear and detailed recording to top off a highly distinguished release.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly performed Haydn string quartets!.......2000-07-12

This CD contains the last three of Joseph Haydn's "Erdody" string quartets, Op. 76. (The quartets were named for Count Erdody, to whom Haydn dedicated them.) Many musicologists consider the "Erdody" quartets to be the finest of the 83 Haydn composed during his long life, and the Kodaly Quartet validates that consideration with superbly warm, enthusiastic, and poetic performances. Throughout the three quartets, Haydn's marvelously infectious optimism and sunny disposition are readily evident. Especially enjoyable is the beginning of Op. 76 No. 4, which begins very softly and builds to a crescendo that gives the musical impression of a sunrise (hence the quartet's nickname - "Sunrise.")

The engineering and sound quality of this CD are excellent. The balance between four members of the quartet is nearly perfect, giving the performances a wonderful sense of realism and immediacy. The acoustics of the recording venue are warm and spacious.

Awarded a "rosette" by the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs, (the "rosette" is the Penguin Guide's the highest accolade, given to a recording of special distinction.) this CD is a special listening experience in every way. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A very good collection of moving compositions........2007-05-07

We heard the Piano Concerto No. 5 in F on National Public Radio and decided that we must have this piece of music in our CD collection. We selected this CD since the two CDs allowed us to purchase all 5 of Camille Saint-Saens' Piano Concertos. This CD has become one of our favorites and we play it often, discovering more interest in the work of Saint-Saens with each playing.

Camille Saint-Saens' sense of drama, his lyric runs, his ability to evoke mystery, all make this listening experience highly recommended. I am fascinated by the way Saint-Saens creates rich variations of his themes as he takes us from movement to movement. Saint-Saens has the ability to develop ethereal melodies and variations on themes that are hypnotic and mystical. His piano runs are pushed for dramatic effect. The creative and amusing variations of his themes are pleasant and amusing.

This CD is highly recommended. In addition to the 5 Piano Concertos, Saint-Saens' Wedding Cake Caprice and the Africa Fantaisie are included. I found Jean-Phillippe Collard's interpretation to be masterful and rich, capturing the vast complexity and variation that Saint-Saens created in his compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing but the Best.......2007-04-01

To the other reviewer, you are a fool to give these CDs anything less than 5 stars, and you should be banished to hearing Fur Elise permanently until you repent of your ways. As a classical piano composer and teacher, I am definetely spoiled with piano music, it's true. But this is a real gem, TRUE ART, where even a metronome is rendered petty and useless to this, thank you very, very, much. Saint-Saen's 5 Piano Concertos, and David Helfgott's performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto IS as good as it gets. This is art with a soul, their is no hidden agenda, no undercurrent to this music. This recording is fine, don't listen to the other reviewer. I would give it 10 stars if I had the option. Much of these 2 CDs is compltely unique in the realm of piano music. The 2nd Mov. of the 5th Concerto is unforgettable, just to name one. Go ahead and get this one, if you don't, you are sinning, right now.

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for all the five concerti, just don't expect much from the second concerto.......2006-06-01

There are two albums of Saint-Saens' complete piano concerti available in the Amazon catalogue. This from EMI classics, and one from Decca. With two extra tracks thrown in (the "Wedding Cake" waltz, Opus 76, and "Africa Fantaisie," opus 89), this is the better bargain. Plus it's cheaper. I highly recommend it for these reasons, especially if your only interest is familiarization with all of Saint-Saens' five piano concertos, as was mine. Whether the Charles Dutoit performance is better, I can't say as I don't own it.

As for the performances in this disc:

My interest in Saint-Saens' piano concertos was fired up when I first heard his 2nd Piano Concerto performed by Cecile Licad. That stupendous performance (yes, I considered that adjective very carefully and find it absolutely appropriate) was also conducted by Andre Previn and accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (another Brit orchestra). That recording is also available in Amazon catalogue. Do buy it if you are a connoisseur of Saint Saens' second piano concerto. It is a definitive performance, one that am sure even Saint-Saens would approve of VERY enthusiastically. Just listen to the cadenza of the first movement in the Music Sampler and hear for yourselves.

Now back to this album. As noted earlier, it is also conducted by Andre Previn. But what a difference a pianist makes. I refer here to the performance of the second piano concerto. I skip it, actually. Having been spoiled--blissfully, ecstatically--by the Licad stunner, I cannot bear the stultifying interpretation in this one. I just listen to the other piano concertos and enjoy them. These piano concertos are excitingly atmospheric, with the composer's unmistakable mix of boister and mystery. As noted from an Amazon review of the Decca album, a recording of all of Saint Saent's five piano concerti is rare enough. So for that reason and the cheap price, this album is a good buy. I just try not wonder how other pianists, like Licad for instance, would play them. I just enjoy Saint Saent's piano music, The other performances are still very enjoyable, excluding other considerations. After I received this album from my sister as her Amazon gift, I now know that Saint Saen's piano concertos really rock!!! They are for me.

For the price and the extra tracks I'd give this album four stars. But for its dismal second piano concerto (cringe, cringe), three stars.

3 out of 5 stars Syracuse defeats Landover.......2007-07-03

I like this Pick. But. I do not believe that the Landover show is anything special and I agree with another reviewer that the recording is sightly muffled, depressed or otherwise muted. This is too bad because there are some great songs in the Landover section. Ramble on Rose, Cassidy, Brown Eyed Women, Loser, Sugaree, Mississippi, Scarlet. Wow! Unfortunately, it is a pedestrian performance. The Scarlet Begonias section through St Steph, NFA and a brief following jam is the highlight of the Landover show. Also, songs like Piggy-o and Cosmic Chuck show up at the most inopportune times and will bum-out your trip considerably.

Having said the foregoing, allow me to state the following. The Syracuse show is awesome. Is it just me, or have you noticed that shows that start with Cold Rain and Snow seem to be among the Dead's greatest shows?

Highlights on disc three, the first set of the Syracuse show, include great versions of Cassidy, Candyman, Friend of the Dee-vil and GDTRFB.

Now, the BEST is CD 4. It is simply awesome. The Comes A Time is great. Eyes is played very fast, which I don't love, but it is kinda' fun to hear the guys mix it up. All of CD 4 is well played.

Other than the slightly depressed sound recording, discs three and four are simply great. Syracuse defeats Landover 2-0.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe 4 and a 1/2.......2006-12-02

On of the the personal pet peeves of mine involves some of the altering that has been happening with Grateful Dead shows as they transfer them from tape to cd. Take, for example this performance of Friend Of The Devil, on all the old soundboard tapes from this era FOTD features backing vocals by Bob and Donna. On all the cd releases from this era Bob's voice is erased on FOTD. There are other times to where voices or keyboard parts are erased and this is happening on releases from throughout their career. As for these two shows themselves, they're very good. One the first disc Bertha, Let It Grow, Sugaree and the second set opener of Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication rocks. On the second disc, the Scarlet Begonias and the Saint Stephen jam are great. Disc three starts with the last Cold, Rain and Snow for over a year. Disc four is a five from beginning to end.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Pick - Prelude to all the great shows of 1977.......2006-05-11

I was late in buying this pick; the playlist seemed a little dull compared to other DPs out there. All in all DP 20 seemed a bit of a sour pick. When I finally did pick this up I was very surprised. The list may be on the 'standard' side, but the playing is incredible. Both first sets are strong, the perfect set ups for the second set. Highlights include the opener Bertha and Sugaree on Disc one. Both second sets are stellar. Disc 2's (9/25/76 show 2nd set) highlights include one of the best Scarlet Begonias you will ever hear without Fire on the Mountain attached, the last (I think) performance of Cosmic Charlie, and a perfect St. Steve > NFA > St. Steve. The band is having a blast and after the line "One man gathers what another man spills" you can hear Garcia say "Yes he goes..." one second before the rhythm section kicks into NFA. Awesome.

Disc four is everything you could ever want from a second set at a Dead show. It starts with PITB with the mystique of '74 but with Hart and Kreutzman togeher again behind the drums. Plus, Phil is bouncing all over the place in the into. It segues into Wheel with a great outro jam that segues perfectly into Sam and Delilah (never heard this transition before) then into the ballad Comes a Time, then Drums > a short/ fast 8 minute Eyes of the World > before jamming and closing PITB.

Though it does not have that unique sound of 1977, it is a great intro to the Dead and a nice prelude to '77. And with two shows on one DP, with only a song edited (I think) from each show to get it to fit on 4 discs, this set is a bargain. Don't hesitate picking this up like I did. Well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Curiously Lackluster.......2005-07-11

I don't know, man. It's Dick's Picks like #20 that make
you appreciate how GREAT Dick's Picks 15, 12 and 1 are.
This is OK, but the band, to my ears, seems a bit lackluster...
Also there are two versions of several songs between CDs 1-2
and 3-4. It's not bad, mind you, but compared to picks 15, 12 and
1...well...it's curiously lackluster.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Compilation Priced Well.......2005-03-31

I am fairly new to the Grateful Dead, this being the first compilation by them that I have purchased. That being said, I am overly satisfied at my purchase as this 4 Disc set offers some classic live performances of hit songs as well as others, at a low, affordable price. Probably the best feature to this compilation is that you get over 3 hours of extraordinary Grateful Dead music which all newcomers and Dead Heads can appreciate. We get nearly all the classics with some exceptional performances, especially on Discs 1 and 3. Also, we hear some wonderful impromptu Jams by the crew as well as a few drum solos.

I definitely found this to be the perfect buy for me, as someone looking into the music of the Grateful Dead. At the time of my purchase, I was only familiar a few of their most well known tracks, and now I adore numerous tracks.
I found the only low point of the compilation in its entirety was Disc 4, seemingly slower paced and less lyrically driven as the others. I find a few tracks on that Disc tend to drag on. Other than that small flaw that some will not even be bothered by, this is an excellent live set of discs from a great band, featuring some superb performances.
Song Highlights:

Bertha: A wonderful opening to the 1st disc, featuring some fantastic piano work by Keith Kreutzmann. Unfamiliar with this track, I immediately caught on to it, loving the sensational flow and lyrical delivery.

New Minglewood Blues: A great track, and I found it to be the superior of the other version found on Disc 3. A very fun song.

Dancing in the streets(Disc 2): A great track, with a beautiful flow to it and a great musical harmony. One of the highlights on Disc 2.

Sugar Magnolia: A classic Grateful Dead track, and a perfect way to end the disc. This is a very well orchestrated, extended version of the song.

It's all over now: A great performance by the crew, and a sensational song.

Friend of the devil: Possibly the most popular song on this compilation, we get a great performance once again, and Jerry Garcia does a great job with the lyrics.

Johnny B. Goode: A beloved song among Dead Heads, the Grateful Dead have a wonderful interpretation of Chuck Berry's hit song. Another great performance by the crew too.

So in conclusion, I don't see how you can go wrong with this compilation, as it displays the live talent of Grateful Dead, as well as giving us over 3 hours of sensational music at a low price. You won't regret purchasing this 4 Disc Set if you are a Dead Head fan, or are interested in their music.
