The madrigals in this book, aptly titled by Monteverdi "Madrigals of War and Love," range from solo voice or duo with continuo to works for eight singers and strings. Concerto Italiano gives a magnificent performance: the opening of "Hor che'l ciel" is daringly slow and still, only to give way suddenly to the narrator's cries of torment; "Ardo, avvampo" proceeds from the thrilling chaos of fire alarms to an extraordinary hush as two tenors end the piece in unison. In the famous "Lamento della ninfa," the musicians have found a way to follow Monteverdi's instructions that the three men should sing in strict tempo ("following the hand"), while the solo soprano nymph sings her lament in freer time, "following the heart." More 'Delights of Music' From Delitiae Musicae.......2003-09-09

This is the second volume of what appears to be a series covering all of Monteverdi's madrigals. I was very favorably impressed by the first volume, madrigals published when Monteverdi was only 19. Now, we have Book II, published when Monteverdi was an old man of 22. The musical style has advanced; no longer is the music strophic, but rather the form of the music follows the form of the poetry, often sounding much like what we later came to know in Monteverdi's early operas, a kind of extended (but very melodious) recitative. And, of course, it is highly contrapuntal still; Monteverdi's style became more homophonic as he went along, but here he's still paying obeisance to the contrapuntal late Renaissance/early Baroque style extant in Florence.

Most of the lyrics are by Torquato Tasso and mostly they are about love or nature, or both. The familiar two-part 'Non si levav'ancor l'alba novella--E dicea l'una sospirand'allora' depicts the desire of a young couple for the dawn not to come and end their night of delight. The nature poetry of the second part has some of Monteverdi's finest word-painting.

As in the first volume the Italian early-music group Delitiae Musicae under Marco Longhini perform brilliantly. The clear-toned all-male vocal group is accompanied lightly and expertly by lute, harpsichord, and in homage to Monteverdi's own instrument, a viola.

The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.

An interesting acquisition.......2000-03-12

In my opinion, American singers like Ragin,Daniels and Minter always demonstrate more originality and artistic impetus than ancient countertenor traditions followers.In this CD with ARTEK,Mr.Minter endorses my impressions though the hurtful record characteristics.Sometimes he pushes on treble notes but the repertoire is a real "tour-de-force" and Minter and ARTEK have a lot of musical puzzles to master. I am not an admirer of ARTEK's sonority because it is excessive dry and Minter doesn,t have a big voice.However he is the star here.The most beautiful "Pianto della Madonna" by Monteverdi is on this disc.Yet,Minter display all his audacity in "Odi quel rosignuolo" and artistic intelligence in "Ribombava d'intorno",this a very beaultiful and exquisite cantata.I enjoy so much this interesting acquisition.

A good product not homesick........1999-10-05

Gigliola gives a new personal interpretation of old beauty Italian songs. Her interpretation is so authentic as original but at the same time she impresses a new soft mark to this repertory. Very delicious among the others songs is "Accarezzame" sung with Neapolitan accent.

Andrea Gabrieli (c. 1510-1586) was one of the first native Venetians to hold the positions of Second and then First Organist in the basilica of San Marco. These were the highest musical appointments in the city, and their holders was expected to compose much of the music they played. In the event, like his predecessor Merulo and his successor (his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli), Andrea was adept at all musical forms, especially the new and up-to-date (very secular) madrigal, a sort of vocal chamber music. A splendid selection of these, interspersed with instrumental canzoni (in which one can see the influence he had on his more-famous nephew) that offer welcome contrast to the vocal music. A Sore Throat Gabrieli.......2005-02-19

When I heard this,I thought I was listening a different ensemble from that I have on another fine recordings by Weser Renaissance to CPO(Regnart Motets,H.Praetorius' Vespers,Motets by Hassler).No problem about players and their period instruments,just in good shape but,what about the voices?Just listen "La Verginella è simile",or "Piangi pur";that quivering singing,tuneless soprano and countertenor voices(one singer for part),just ruining wonderful Gabrieli's madrigals.No organ music;what a pity,'cause A.Gabrieli was principal organist at St. Mark and there're lots of excellent organ music by him.Besides,I believe the location chosen to this cd(the Sendesaal,rather than churches on the others recordings)was a terrible mistake;this lean,dry acoustics here doesn't fit well to these princely instrumental canzoni and worse that,just exposes all this disharmonious singing.If one are looking for Gabrieli,the uncle,stay away of this cd,or pick Regnart or Hassler albuns if you want a fine Weser's recording.
