5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars The best album (CD) of all time..........2007-07-16

I am old school, but this to me is the best album of all times. The actual album (12" vinyl) has some things that are missing from the CD, but don't worry about it. If this is your kind of music, you will not be dissapointed by the CD.

This is real music, live and relatively unfiltered, played by real incredible musicians, and sung by an incredible singer at the top of his game.

Enough said. Enjoy.

This is my favorite album by Al Jarreau. No one can do Take 5 like he can.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any SERIOUS Jazz Affectionado.......2007-05-06

I was "turned-on" to the LP version of this work in 1980. It was already a year or two old, and the album belonged to friend. He never got it back! I played the album constantly. I made a sojourn to Oakland to see Jarreau in his sweet homecoming at the Greek Theatre, (David Sandborn-opening act), I was so inspired by Jarreau and his style. I was NOT disappointed in the show, even though this album sets the highest standard for any vocalist/musician imaginable. It has been stated that the LP is abbreviated to fit a CD format. Too Bad, as the work should NOT be altered...at all! I scoured e-bay for months and purchased a pristine LP that I treasure. With the help of software, I am able to transfer analog to digital, and this is one is one of my favorites. No, that is not true. I have over 1500 vinyl and 350 CDs and this IS my favorite. If on a desert isle, I think I could get along with this one alone! I have read the previous reviews to this point, and although I hesitate to put my feelings to script for all to see, I am compelled. I would say about this album (CD)...no mater that a few songs are abreviated..that the CD isn't as rich as the LP. If you have ears, you should have this. If you have a musical cell in your body, buy this CD. No matter that Mr Jarreau had to bend his art to fit the demands of the "Pop" culture we all live in, this is singularly one of the greatest works of vocal art ever captured "live". I can appreciate the culture of Jazz in America, and thankfully this was not recorded in front of an American audience. One cannot go without mentioning the musicianship of Mr. Jarreau's accompianists. The arraingments are stunning! In a world of hyperbole, this work by a truely gifted musician, is stunning. Buy it. Make some coffee or tea on an early Sunday morning,,sit down and let this work lift and inspire you. It will, as it has for me, for over twenty-five years.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-03-19

If you get a Jarreau CD this is a great start. He is unique in the vocal genre and this showcases why. If unfamiliar give it a try. Also because it's live you get the true magic of his delivery.

5 out of 5 stars I wish we had a 10-star rating.......2007-01-18

I have listened to this album on and off for 25+ years. It is one of a kind. It stands out like a stroke of genius, an incandescent flash of artistic lightning. It is disheartening that Al Jarreau's subsequent works have never come even close to the perfection of this one.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but kind of disappointing.......2006-04-17

This isn't a bad recording, but the tracks are not the actual performances off of any cast recording of any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. The reditions of the songs on the disc are of varying quality. Some are pretty good. Some are borderline awful.
It is a good collection for inexpensively getting a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most popular songs in one place and having them there to be able to listen to get the idea of what a certain song sounds like and is about. It isn't the collection of definitive recordings for certain roles. In fact in a couple examples, I wonder if the performer fully understood the context of the song he or she was singing &/or what it was about. Overall, the album is good, for the most part, if not excellent.

However, the liner notes for "The Essential Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber" is another matter. I don't mean to be unkind, but the author of the comments on the different tracks (one Rexton S. Bunnett) is blatantly WRONG in multiple instances. I don't mean just in nit-picky details, but in major plot details/context of songs, like the fact that Bunnett identifies "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as being sung by "our heroine" (who he does not even identify by name as Christine Daae) as she thinks about her lover, not as being sung about Christine's dead father. He also says that the Phantom has found his perfect love and "Angel of Music" in Christine... because HE is the Angel of Music who Christine believes has been sent to her by her dead father, and because although the Phantom is obsessed with Christine, that relationship is far from "loving" (even if Christine shows him compassion. I feel like these (and a couple other mistakes) are major plot points to get wrong. A good amount of the commentary reads as if Bunnett might have written it at the last minute, fudging his way through entries on musicals of which he had little knowledge; like what an essay I might write on a book I never read for my college class but had quickly looked up on Cliff's Notes would sound like. In terms of sheer editing, there are spelling mistakes, run-on sentences and spacing errors ("Any DreamWill Do")in the liner notes. Where was the copy editor?
And the most frightening fact of all, under Bunnett's credentials, it says "Harper Collins has just published his revision and updating of the Collins Book of the Musical."
I am being very critical, but I think that for a widely-released CD it is reasonable to expect the liner notes to be at a professional level, as they were most likely supposed to be.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..........2005-04-23

I was looking for a CD of the original performances and this CD doesn't have them. I suppose it was my fault for not looking closer, but the songs just weren't the same. Personally, I was not impressed. If you don't care that they aren't the originals then it is nice to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Some great performances, some not so great..........2005-04-18

This CD is actually pretty good, considering you get 40 songs for less than $16. Let's evaluate the pros and cons.

Pros:

Two classic songs that are performed excellently are Phantom of the Opera and I Don't Know How to Love Him.

Of course you want to compare Phantom to the classic Michael Crawford/ Sarah Brightman version. Well, guess what? This version is BETTER. The woman has a deeper voice than Brightman, and her singing style is just awesome. The ending of this version (you know, the "Sing, my angel of music, sing for me!") is different, but in a good way... I think.)

And of course, the standard for I Don't Know How to Love Him is Yvonne's version. This version is different, but it grew on me quickly. This version has a country feel to it, almost. Somehow it works and sounds great.

There are a lot of great performances in this collection. My favorites include: Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Could We Start Again Please, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Buenos Aires, Rainbow High, Only You, Starlight Express, Angel of Music, Masquerade, All I Ask of You, Half a Moment, and Whistle Down the Wind. I think they're all great versions of their more famous counterparts.

Cons:

First of all, there are some technical problems that are kind of disappointing. A few of the songs have a very echoey sound. Any Dream Will Do, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, and There's Me are the songs that come to mind that are the worst in this regard. It isn't really bad, just enough to be slightly annoying, more so when the volume is turned way up on your CD player.

A few songs are worthy of skipping over when listening to this collection. In my opinion, Superstar, Sunset Boulevard, and Gethesmane are the biggest disappointments.

Superstar just doesn't cut it for me. The singer really overdoes it, making it overstylized... really makes you yearn for Murray Head. I can't stand listening to it. Just my opinion.

Sunset Boulevard is one of my very favorite musicals, so I was really hoping that the singer would do justice to its title song. Unfortunately I don't think he did. You can't help but compare it to Alan Campbell's fantastic version. This guy has a very choppy way of singing, when I'm used to it being sung so smoothly. Maybe it would grow on me, but I don't think I'll give it a chance to. However, that last note is much stronger than Alan Campbell's. It doesn't make up for the rest of the song, though.

Finally, Gethsemane. The inevitable fact is that NO ONE can sing this song like Michael Ball. This guy tries, he really does. But he doesn't have the right voice or the right style. So please listen to Michael Ball's performance of Gethsemane if you want to know how breathtaking of a song it can be. It's on the Royal Albert Hall DVD, and I'm sure he's got it on one of his CDs.

Anyway, overall, this is a good CD if you like quantity over quality. Don't buy it for the classics, you'll probably end up disappointed with many of them. Buy it for the lesser known songs. You probably won't like every song, especially if you're a big ALW fan, but for the price, it's worth it.

If you want classic versions of classic ALW songs, you might prefer something like "The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection".

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-03-11

The singer(s)does not do justice for the lyrics. It was grating to the ears. Save your money for the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Talent at Its Best.......2003-01-03

What a pleasure to hear a collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beautiful music from such wonderful voices accompanied by an outstanding symphony. This sensational CD is a treasure to own.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best album, but still highly enjoyable.......2003-01-06

Astrud's voice is best kept to an intimate setting, and for a few songs here that is realized, but too much of "Rainbow" is more on the brassy side, which doesn't suit Astrud. Still, "I Will Wait For You" gets it's best reading here, and the title track is very spritely and melodic. Not her best, but if you enjoy Gilberto's deep, slightly off-center vocals and her sweet coo, you'll get a sultry groove on nevertheless. 'B'

3 out of 5 stars Astrud and big band: strange bedfellows.......2001-08-12

It can hardly be argued that producer Creed Taylor specialized in making interesting albums (for better or worse) by recording his star performers in new and different settings. Astrud Gilberto had recorded some songs with bossa/jazz combos and a number of songs with string orchestras, but LOOK TO THE RAINBOW placed her in the setting of a big band for the first time.

In my opinion, this is one case where Creed's idea for a new setting didn't really work out to the best advantage. First of all, the soft and mellow sound of Astrud's voice doesn't sound very "at home" amongst the blaring trumpets and trombones; to me, the orchestral settings of Claus Ogerman were ideal because they were as gentle and delicate as the voice they supported. The average big band lacks the sensitivity necessary to back someone like Astrud. Secondly, I just don't understand the public's love affair with Gil Evans. He's one of the most highly-regarded arrangers in jazz history, but I can't get used to his style. Throughout this record, his almost continual use of a muted trumpet section is piercing and unpleasant, his woodwind voicings are shrill and discordant, and the overall sound strikes me as messy and unpolished. There are points in "Once Upon A Summertime" and "I Will Wait For You" where the arrangements sound like they're on the verge of falling apart. Maybe this style is appropriate for Miles Davis projects, but not for bossa nova and certainly not for Astrud Gilberto.

Matters are brightened somewhat by two charts from the pen of Al Cohn: Carlos Lyra's "Lugar Bonita" and Marcos Valle's "Learn To Live Alone." For all Evans' acclaim, I find Cohn's writing much more coherent and pleasing to the ear.

Another strong point of the album is its selection of songs. Most of them are Brazilian in origin -- in fact, the album opens with a Portuguese reading of Baden Powell's classic "Berimbau" (in a performance bogged down somewhat by Evans' leaden, lumbering brass writing -- *sigh*). The remainder of the album is devoted to three songs by Jobim, two by Carlos Lyra, one each by Marcos Valle and Joao Gilberto, along with three from America. My personal favorites on the album are Joao's "Bim Bom," Lyra's "Lugar Bonita" and Valle's "Learn To Live Alone." The weakest song is quite possibly the title track; although its arrangement is pleasingly low-key, the melody and harmony are very much in the folk bag, and don't have much in the way of saudade.

Astrud's voice sounds as lovely as ever, despite the generally brash backings. She engages in some interesting scatting on "Berimbau" (in which she phonetically imitates the sound of the berimbau) and "She's A Carioca," but her greatest interpretive powers really lie in the uniqueness of her voice. That factor, at least, is a constant on this recording.

Although it falls short of the absolute heavenliness of Astrud's first two Verve albums, LOOK TO THE RAINBOW is an enjoyable enough listen... and it may serve as a good introduction to Astrud Gilberto for jazz fans who dig Gil Evans. For those among us who prefer their bossa nova full of beauty and bittersweet sadness rather than generic discordance in the trumpet section, THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE is a lot more essential.

2 out of 5 stars Boring to the Max.......2001-07-16

What a disappointment - the selections are hum drum, the back-up renditions uninspiring and Astrid's delivery lackluster. I certainly would not recommend anyone purchase this CD, unless, of course, one is so devoted to Astrid you just had to have it to add to a collection.

5 out of 5 stars the best Astrud you could find..........2001-05-23

This album is my favorite of Astrud's, the songs she does in portuguese are magical. I don't mind the English ones on this album, easier on the ears than some others I've heard. I like Astrud's voice, if you've never heard her, definately listen to a track sample before buying her cds, she's got an unusual voice. I would recommend this over any other Astrud solo album, both for music quality and song selection. If you're looking for something comparable to a Getz/Gilberto, this is not it. But if you're looking for sultry vocals over a light bossa-nova background, check this out, its really rather charming.

4 out of 5 stars I know what I like!.......2000-10-22

Such a beautiful voice and well-done light jazz-bossa nova arrangements.Fans of Stereolab and Tortoise take note.

        5 out of 5 stars A great new find!.......2000-10-18

I am an afficiando of cabaret singers. Bill Daugherty is one of the best new singers I have heard in a very long time. I bought the album based on repetoire alone. It is a wonderful mix of well known tunes and some that I am not familiar with. Mr Daugherty brings a warm high baritone to a wide range of songs. The duet with his mentor, the evergreen and ever great Margaret Whiting is just one of the discs highlights. To those who love intimate singers, buy this one. To those who love the great american song book, but this one. To everyone else, buy this one, also.

5 out of 5 stars This 'Look To The Rainbow' is songstress Anita Ellis'..........2001-07-17

...recording from South Carolina in 1977. Anita is an immensely gifted singer of the American Popular Song. The selections here are given luscious, soulful renderings so exquisitely full-bodied; I've appointed an intermission to this CD, allowing the joy of its distinct revelations time for savoring. There are selections from Broadway musicals, film and among others a gem named 'Poor Loulie Jean' with glorious nuance. You discover the rest. Previous recordings of Ellis' such as 'A Legend Sings With Ellis Larkins At The Piano' and 'Echoes' recorded with actor/singer/brother Larry Kert deserve a CD release. And there are others....

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC SINGER TO REDISCOVER URGENTLY.......2001-02-13

Anita Ellis is a singing legend. She influenced many a singer and it's a shame that she seems to be forgotten today. But this CD should give an opportunity to (re)discover an incredible singer, gifted with a beautiful voice, a great range and a beautiful tone. An intelligent, really impressive singer. She could have been an opera singer, but she choosed popular music and it wasn't a waste!! By the way, you probably heard her, she dubbed Rita Hayworth in "Put The Blame On Mame"... I told you, a legend sings!
