5 out of 5 stars Rita Lee - Bossa'n'Beatles (Ghordo Music).......2006-05-05

Lennon and Mc Cartney embraced the hypnotic Bossa Nova mood. Harrison replaced the gentle weep of the guitar by the agile pace of samba rock and Ringo came across the simple yet seductive nature that lingers in every dancey beat of forr?. Today, The Beatles come from Brazil.

As legitimate heiress of the Tropicalia movement, Rita Lee has earned her own space in the rich Brazilian music world. Showing off an unparalleled talent, she has gotten used to defy boundaries and has turned in as many colors as possible. She is a popular bossa-nova voice; she is as romantic as ballads can be; she can be extremely pop; but also she can rock harder than men.

Born in Sao Paulo on December 31, 1947, Rita Lee represents many eras in Brazilian music, as she's been a strong presence for the last four decades. Following an early passion about piano, and music in general, she quickly forgot dreams about becoming a vet, or an actress, and focused on music.

After creating the girl group Teenage Singers in school in 1963, and participating in some other bands, things got seriously experimental for Rita by the end of 1965, as she prepared to join the now legendary and highly psychedelic band Os Mutantes, where she enlisted between 1966 and 1972. Os Mutantes are considered among the fathers of Tropicalia, right next to Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Tom Z?.

Before, and especially during her time with Os Mutantes, she discovered and fell in love with The Beatles. In her own words, "In 1962, my sister got married and went to London for the honeymoon, and she brought me back the first Fab Four's single, Love Me Do/PS I love You. That's how I got hooked. From 1963 to 1970, I drank, ate, smoked and breathed Beatles. I was forever drawing their silhouettes everywhere, but my very best pictures of the four were the ones I draw using a pencil, on the best quality paper I could get: the sort bakers wrapped the bread my father used to buy every morning."

Her take on ten Beatles classics, plus three Portuguese versions of songs also sung in English, ended up in Bossa'n Beatles, an album that showcases Rita unplugging her well known Brazilian pop sound to offer a different take on some of the most beautiful music the lads from Liverpool wrote.

To get a completely different approach and hoping even better results, Rita added her unique bossa-nova feeling, bits of electropop, and some samba-rock to the already proven formula, and what came out of the experiment was, to say the least, worth listening.

Produced and arranged by Rita's husband -reputed musician Roberto de Carvallo, her partner for the last 30 years- Bossa'n Beatles features special appearances by Paralamas do Sucesso's drummer Joao Barone, and the renowned pianist and arranger Joao Donato.

"I can't say they were my first boyfriends," concedes Rita Lee before giving up her latest love confession, "but at least I can say that they were the biggest passion of my life. The kind of passion that makes people love, work, and be happy forever. To me The Beatles are like a good vice, one of those that are worth relapsing, over and over." - Roman Kutnowski

Where should I begin? Hmmm.....I guess I should probably stop playing this album if I want to be able to finish this review! It's just so beautiful! From a Bossa Nova Music lover's perspective....this is as good as it gets. Rita has the most touching voice. If I were to dream of what a female Brazilian singer sounds like....she is it. Not being a typical Beatles fan (they wouldn't be in my playlist), I still believe I am qualified to say that she more than does these Beatles songs justice!

5 out of 5 stars WAY TO GO RITA!!!!.......2003-04-26

This is an AWESOME CD for people who loves Beatles and / or Bossa Nova. For the rest it is as good as you'll get from a brazilian lady singing Beatles songs. Absolutely great gift. Just relax, get a drink and let the music play!!

5 out of 5 stars The Rita Lee Invasion.......2007-02-10

I had the pleasure of premiering this album in the U.S on my radio show. It is a blend of classy Brazilian bossa-nova and carefully chosen Bealtes favorties that lend themselves perfectly to the mix.
Whether you are a die-hard Beatles enthusiast or a casual listener, Bossa'n Beatles will be a great addition to your library.
Rita Lee has been a fan of the Beatles since the 60's and always dreamed of paying a musical tribute to her heros. She has finally succeeded.

    Bravo, Ms. Lee!

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Fusion of Beatles and Brazilean Rythms.......2003-11-07

As a lover of Beatles and Brazilian Music, this album has become one of my all time favorites. Rita Lee's smooth, sultry vocals blend perfectly into the excellent musical arrangements. The percussion, strings and piano are subtle yet not simple. The Bossa Nova tempo gives this music an incredible twist and warmth.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles in a Brazilian Lounge.......2003-01-05

This CD creates a lounge atmosphere just in the playing. Rita Lee is a sultry female vocalist and the arrangements of these old Beatles tunes are more jazz than 1960's rock and roll.

The Beatles were before my time, but the familiarity of the lyrics and the translation into another genre held a strong and instant appeal. I ran out to MusicMundo in Buenos Aires and bought this CD the day that I heard it for the first time and I have been playing it ever since.

Perfect for a dinner party or just mellowing out on a couch, this title should be in every CD library.

Rossini, Tchiakovsky, Bizet and other "classics" destroyed with drums, bass and a fuzz box. 50 minutes of "funny" operatic parody ranging from "The Bride of the Valkyries" to "Stars-n-Strippers Forever." The Baroque Wind Sessions is Vinnie and the Stardusters' second CD, their sophomoric effort and the classical "art" theme is basically to make their mothers happy that their music isn't all just dirty songs.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Lush sophistication.......2003-06-14

When this CD arrived at my door last night, I threw open the deck doors, poured a glass of wine, and put on this CD. I was stunned.

I was totally unprepared for the subtle, sophisticated arrangements and heartfelt performances of so many great Beatles songs. This is not your average tribute album. This is a true labor of love.

Every song is beautifully crafted. The arrangement for 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' was almost shocking in its originality. The thump-thump of drums leading into the chorus in the Beatles' version is replaced by a unique change in beat and Rita's voice works the familiar melody of the chorus into something new. The results are marvelous. Who says you have to stick to the original formula? Rita and the talented band certainly do not and with good results. They have made these well-known songs (recorded by dozens of others) their own.

Her versions of 'All My Loving' and 'She Loves You' are among the best I've ever heard. The band lays down a soft Brazilian beat or an up-tempo pop rhythm equally as well. Rita's voice goes from a sexy whisper to a soaring swell. She is right there with the band in every way.

Beatles fans, Brazilian music fans, and just plain ol' music fans alike will find something to like about this splendid recording. I cannot wait to play this for my friends visiting this weekend. They also love good music!

5 out of 5 stars Rita does it again!.......2003-05-06

I've been a fan of Rita Lee's since I was 6 years old. As an American growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Rita's raucous, fun and often very touching music was always a part of my childhood. And now I have a new Rita album to enjoy as an adult!

Rita understands the Beatles, she did nothing but eat, breathe, drink and sleep them from 63-70, according to her liner notes. And it shows on this beautiful CD where she does highly imaginative and incredibly successful covers of some of the Fab Fours most famous tunes.

She takes "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and brilliantly sets it to a Forró beat (Brazil's Northeastern musical style which relies heavily on an Accordion), and does Bossa Nova takes on "She Loves You" and "If I Fell". Wonderful! Another highlight is her 1/2 English/1/2 Portuguese version of "Here, There and Everywhere"..quirky lyrics in Portuguese that tie in beautifully with the English original and remind us of Lee's wonderful sense of humor!

And then there's a complete Portuguese version of "Can't Buy Me Love" taken at a slower pace ("Tudo Por Amor"), and a nice Os Mutantes style (Rita's psychedelic band from the late 60s) take on "It's Been A Hard Day's Night". The cover of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is also one of the most original I've ever heard.

I highly recommend it if you like to hear a highly talented and original artist cover the Beatles. Her ex-husband, Roberto de Carvalho, is the producer and he does wonders with Lee as always.

3 out of 5 stars OMG.... An american... well.......2003-01-14

Rita Lee is brazilian for sure but she is a descendent of one of the 6k Confederate Families that fled the south towards to end of the civil war to many places in Latin American such as Cuba, the british honduas (belize) and MOST went to Brazil.

They call themselves CONFEDERADOS and in their town they have an oral tradition of english passed down to them that is uniquely 'southern' as if frozen in time. And their town crest has the confederate flag on it... although its meaning in brazil is nothing like what it is in the US.

I guess you can say that's why her english is fluent and flawless.

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Beatles fan pays magnificent tribute to Fab 4.......2002-09-01

Rita Lee has had a long and successful career in Brazil, and has been a Beatles fan since the sixties, so it is entirely appropriate that she should record this tribute album. Clearly a talented singer, she sings most of these songs in fluent English, with the remainder in her native Portugese. Actually, three of the four songs recorded in Portugese are also here in English versions, but it doesn't matter - it's a great album anyway.

Rita's style is very soft and sexy, almost whispery at times, making her covers of these songs very distinctive, even before you take account of the Brazilian influences. Inevitably (given her style), many of the songs are taken at a slower tempo than the Beatles did them, but the one song I might have expected her to slow right down (I want to hold your hand, which has been slowed down by others, most notably Petula), she actually sings quite briskly, though not as energetically as the Beatles.

Having heard many Beatles tributes, I know which songs to expect most frequently. Rita has shown some imagination in her selection, by omittining Yesterday (a song I love, but it has been covered by hundreds of others). Instead, Rita covered She loves you, All my loving and Lucy in the sky with diamonds, all of which have been covered before, but not too often.

As this is my first Brazilian album, I can't compare it to other Brazilian music, but it has certainly aroused my interest and I will explore further in due course.

What I can say is that this is a stunning Beatles tribute album, well worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! QUE LEGAL!.......2002-05-29

What a beautiful compilation of Beatles covers. This is one of the best "tribute" albums I have ever heard. John Lennon would have been so pleased with how she has so delicately treated his lyrics. Listening to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", one would think the song was written especially for her. The Brazilian musical touches are so subtle and well done. The familiar cool, clean bossa nova beat on several of the songs is delightful. The northeastern Brazil "forró" stylings on "I Want to Hold Your Hand" are brilliant! This CD is a must have for Rita Lee, Beatles or Brazilian music lovers.
