For connoisseurs of Neapolian songs, these discs from Testament are golden, and no one sings these songs better than di Stefano. He has the charm and style in his delivery as few others have.
After hearing him in these songs, others may sound like mere pretenders. I can't recommend this disc highly enough if you like great singing and canzoni Napoli.

Now this is what I would call one beautiful CD.It shows that Pippo was the greatest tenor in the world during his reign.His voice is extremely beautiful and the warmth and emotionalism are incredible.I listen to his " Non T'amo Piu " endlessly.You just can't find singing like Pippo at his best even going back to Gigli.This CD is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in classical tenor voices.They don't meke them like Pippo anymore and fortunately his voice and style of singing will live forever with his many recordings.Do yourselves a big favor and buy this one.

Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Timeless voice and hearbreaking singing.......2006-12-12

This is a recording I'll enjoy for many many years to come. The beautiful Tosti songs suited Bergonzi's mellow voice and immaculate legato wonderfully in the 80s and we're so fortunate that Orfeo decided to record him a few times in his twilight years. The veteran still had so much to offer and proves it with his heartbraking phrasing. Everything here is sung simply and sincerely and this makes Tosti songs as light as lullabies yet as moving as a lovestory. I was in tears listening to three songs in particular: Non t'amo piu, Malia and Sogno. Treat yourself to an unforgettable evening with Carlo Bergonzi.

POSSIBLY PAVAROTTI'S MOST BEAUTIFUL RECORDING.......2006-03-29

I've never been an admirer of Luciano Pavarotti. Yes, it was a great voice, and certainly the sound was without equal in his time. That said, I was always turned off by the Madison Avenue type of packaging he allowed himself to be promoted by. Moreover, his habitual and constant repetition of the same Italian repertoire over and over, coupled by his ungainly and eventually grotesque appearance --- all in blatant contrast to the amazing musical range of Placido Domingo ---- sunk him for me in the late 1970's. This recording, however, is a standout. The "arie antiche" he sings here are all very, very beautifully done. These Italian "art songs" were used by singers in the early part of the 19th century to perfect and refine their vocal skills in preparation for a career in the operatic bel canto literature. These songs are very difficult. They have long lines, which must be sung softly and with great control. If a singer has a problem with their technique, these songs will expose these problems without mercy. Pavarotti had all the beauty of tone and breath control essential to make these songs thrive. Pavarotti uses his voice here as a master violinist would use his violin in virtually every selection presented here. For anyone who values great singing, this disc is a must. Pavarotti die-hards will probably already own it. It's one of a kind. Also a little sad that this great tenor allowed himself to undergo his metamorphosis from artist to media buffoon.

This is my favorite Pavarotti recording. I wore out the LP of this concert decades ago.... Wonderful program of Italian songs from Scarlatti and Handel through Respighi and Tosti. My favorite are the three Respighi songs. Don't miss this one, or you'll miss one of the very best!

great voice, wonderful rendition of baroque hits wonderful orchestra, Bonynge mastering the strings terrific engineering terrific singing of romantic Tosti songs I am not a Pav fan!!! but I sure like this disc wich I call the "pre-screaming Pav period"

Remarkable........2002-02-01

A great example of Luciano's control over his art. Tranquil, beautiful and wonderful. "Donlente immagine di Fille mia" is worth the price of the cd itself. Pavarotti at his best!

Luciano Pavarotti sings his occassional program of arias and songs. His singing is very good. He is 65 and - despite his hair dye - he looks it. So his days as a performer are clearly numbered now.

However the title is very misleading. It is not a live recital; it's MANY live recitals, as this album is a collection of about four or five different recitals. The voice is recorded very close to the speakers, as if he were trying to cover the movement from one place to another. it also is obvious that Leone Magiera (the acompanist) plays four or five different pianos, none of them really the highest quality.

Overall, a wonderful gift for a Pavarotti nut (if you can get through the piano playing). Go ahead and buy it now. You will make Amazon smile and - trust me - you will be smiling to. Is there no better recomandation then this?

The Golden Years Of Pavarotti.......2001-03-29

First I would like to say that I am very happy to see a solo release of NEW recordings from the great Pavarotti. I liked the program very much and I was glad to see him include songs that he had not previously commercially recorded. What gets me is that this Live Recital is not just one recital he recorded. This is a compilation of recorded songs and arias from four different recitals in four different years and four different opera houses ranging from 1997 to 2000. To me a true recital recording is one performance and speaks volumes on how an artist connects with his/her audience. But on the other hand the singing here is fantastic and those who want more new projects of Pavarotti (including me)won't be disappointed. This is a must for Pavarotti fans and tenor fans alike and please Maestroo Pavarotti, more new projects!!

Nino D'Angelo is the quintessential embodiment della musica napoletana...if anybody has seen the San Remo festival this year,"Senza giacca e cravatta" was awesome! Nino has always been a "local hero" as a friend put it...but i think more people should open their minds to southern italian music. This particular album makes me feel as if i am back in Italia lying on the beach and the music drifts through the air from the Lido into my heart. The cassette actually came out in the early 1980s when i was small, and in my opinion, will always be one of the most requested juke-box songs of the summer.
