This CD is great! Michael Davenport is an awesome bass clarinet player, and Kimberly is wonderful on the piano. It's really nice to have an entire CD of bass clarinet music, and I hope there'll be more from them in the future! =)

I purchased this CD directly from Duo Alea at a performance, but wanted to add my review to Amazon to encourage others to have a listen! Duo Alea perform beautifully together - wonderful chamber music - but this recording is also worth listening to because of the unique repertoire. I really like the music of Wolfgang Gabriel, and there's a lot of it here to explore!

John Verrall (1908-2001) was a 20th century American composer whose body of work includes a wide variety of instrumental, orchestral, chamber and vocal music, as well as three operas and a film score. Kimberly Davenport is best known for her piano work with Duo Alea, which has released three critically acclaimed CDs. The program on this CD, her first solo recording, was conceived in the same spirit as these earlier recordings - with a passion for bringing to life powerful music which has remained largely and undeservedly 'in the drawer' - unpublished and underperformed.

Wonderful CD!.......2005-12-08

I love the piano and am always interested in hearing new compositions but when I ordered this CD by Kimberly Davenport I had no idea I would be hearing this level of performance; she is a tremendously strong, musical player with a wonderful touch and sense of line and phrasing. I knew something about Kimberly from her work as a member of 'Duo Alea,' a magnificent bass clarinet/piano duo which has released 3-4 recordings (I've been lucky enough to hear the duo in person in Seattle once, they don't perform too often), but I think this is her first solo recording and it's a hit. I was simply awed by the music on this disc! -- most of it written in the mid-20th century -- I can't believe I've never heard the Piano Sonata before, it should be performed often. It is a giant piece of music -- I've heard about great music or works of art which for some reason haven't been 'discovered' and this piece is certainly one of them. If you order this CD you will not be disappointed, even if you're not usually a fan of 'new' music. And by the way, the sound on this disc is just great also.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Duo Alea perform live - so I look forward to each new recording they release! This is a great recording, with some pieces I was familiar with, but also some things that were new to me, like the wonderful works by Gabriel and Erbse. I definitely recommend this for any bass clarinet lover, or any chamber-music lover in general!

Not what I expected........2006-01-05

The name Alea Jacta Est is not a real common name, but I'm wondering if its the same band I was looking for. I would have associated Alea Jacta Est with the Darkwave Avant Garde style of the early 1990's French group "Lucie Cries" or the various compilations "L'Appel De La Muse, Vol.1, 2, 3" etc.

This album is not even close, rather it more resembles the late 1970's style of power guitar, bass and drums. Bluesy? Maybe a little. Pink Floyd? Hardly.

This release may appeal to people who enjoy listening to FM radio, or the more mainstream rock music going around. That's why I gave it two stars and not one. However, if you're looking for the unusual, experimental, sophisticated sound of a French Darkwave band, stay very far away from this release.
