Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

This is an awesome combination of bizzare and enjoyable songs, it's embarrasing that I can barely understand what he's saying (since I'm arabic) but even if you have no clue what he's saying you'll still love it, and if you do understand the algerian dialect and some french then you'll L-O-V-E LOVE this album. I'm learning slowly the algerian dialect and from what I understand, Cheb Mami's songs are gorgeous!! My favorite song is Haualo (sp?) and from what I know he's singing about how he always waits for this girl (or wife) to come back to him at night... I call it the insomniac song, i sing it to my chemistry book (yeah, i'm weird, get over it). Any ways, get this disc, YOU'LL LOVE IT!

This instrumental release has fingerstyle jazz guitar, string bass and drums. The musical ideas are fresh, ultra hip, accesible, and very pleasurable to hear. The music stands up to serious listening, but serves equally well in the background. If you love fingerstyle jazz guitar, buy this and "TRIO SUD". They are both wonderful!

The trio sound is great. If you have the cd, put it in and listen to the changes on track #3 . . . very nice. If you don't have the cd- get it.

Wonderful Musicianship.......2001-12-13

The amazing technical ability of these 3 artists is combined with superb ensemble skills. They listen to each other as well as any Jazz trio I've ever heard, the same kind of ability that made the Mel Torme/George Shearing collaborations stand out. Well engineered, this album thrills the ear from beginning to end. Their rendition of A Night in Tunisia breathes new life into that old standard, and never has a trio done it better. The haunting Bella Vista is irresistable; I listened to it over and over and over. All in all, this is an awesome recording.

I bought this CD after a Guitar Islancio/Sylvain Luc concert and it one of my favourite cds. My friend bought the Sylvain Luc - Birele lagrene Duet CD which is also fantastic. If you're a fan of instrumental jazz then this one is guaranteed to please.

My most listened-to Jazz CD!.......2001-08-07

This CD is one of my favourites and most listened-to, both as a musician and a music lover. Each time I listen to it, I hear something new in the music that didn't seem to be there before.

I also saw the trio live in a tiny theatre (before I bought the CD), and the music was incredible. This CD comes very close to the live feel that jazz (and this group) is all about.

Someone _NEEDS_ to get these guys into the North American jazz festival circuit!

Flawless and Soulful.......2007-06-24

Sylvain Luc is one of the best guitar players ever. He and those with whom he plays (in this case Jean-Marc Jafet and Andre' Ceccarelli) make perfection sound effortless. I know they work hard to get this good, but it still sounds like they are having a lot of fun. Sylvain Luc manages to mix Jazz, Gypsy guitar, pop, and tonal influences from all sorts of other genres into a coherent and imaginative sound. The production and audio quality of Sylvain's albums is always superb. Hats off to Rene' Amaline and Helene Texier (the engineers) for knowing just what to do and what not to do. Tres transparent! Of course the producer has a little to do with a great album, too. Francis Dreyfus has a great thing going. Any of the Sylvain Luc albums are must-haves for anyone who loves interesting, creative, great sounding, and well crafted music.

After over forty five years of playing and listining to jazz guitar, I can attest to the virtuosity, creative genius and exciting listening Sylvain Luc adds to the long list of performers any serious guitarist is familiar with. I find him exceptional in every category and know you will enjoy and treasure his albums (3). His ensemble of Base and Drums is superb and as exciting as Sylvain is. Truely enjoyable and rewarding listening for guitarists and jazz lovers as well.

Incredible music..........2003-04-17

If you love guitar, not just only jazz guitar, you have to listen to this record, definitely on the best guitar CD of 2002 ( well, one of the best guitar album of the last 10 years should I even say ). Sylvain plays with such finesse and technical expertise throughout the whole album, yet keeping it easy to listen to. His acoustic tone is gorgeous, and Jafet and Ceccarelli just are perfect as always on bass and drums respectively. Try and be convinced...

The music of Sylvain Luc and his trio is captivating and wonderfully understated. The presentation is completely unhindered by sometimes technically challenging compositions and interpretations. The recording is excellent, and devoid of studio wizardry. Tanjore style.......2003-10-01

Following up on the previous review, more than a "rival," the Tanjore school ("baani" called it South India) is a genre of the many schools (others being Karaikudi, etc.) and Aruna Sairam is a protege of this school through her association with the heiress of the great Veena Dhannammal, the late Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. T. Brinda (1912-1996). T Brinda along with her sister T Muktha are reputed to be repositories of many padams and javalis, some rarely heard today in concerts.

Listeners can treat this album as an exposure to the Tanjore style, with particular emphasis on rendering of padams, which are difficult pieces of the Karnatic repertoire to learn and perform. In this album, Aruna has rendered 3 of Kshetrayya's padams as well as one of Govindaswamy's. And not precluding the trinity of Karnatic Music, she includes a kriti of Tyagaraja in the Vivadi raga (raga with dissonant notes) Vagadhishvari. And what a thoughtful way to conclude her tribute to her masters with a Sanskrit sloka from the Krishna Karnamrutham of Bilwamangala Lilasuka in a garland of ragas!
A great collection item for beginners and connoisseurs alike.

Austere beauty, a great singer.......2000-09-19

As a total fan of M.S. Subbulakhsmi for over 30 years, it is a joy to find a near 'rival', this artist from Tanjore and this form, Padam. It's a style of singing she represents wonderfully, a form that we're told is fast disappearing. Her presentation is languid, leisurely, dignified and charged with the deepest feeling. A special surprise and gem is her rendering of a Sloka in raga Hamsanadi which is counterpart to raag Marwa in the Hindustani system.
