2 out of 5 stars Not As Expected.......2007-03-29

I ordered this CD because of the song "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" which I love. It was very good, but the rest of the CD was just not good enough for me to keep for just one song. I'm sorry to say that I returned the CD.

5 out of 5 stars THE GRAND MICHEL PLAYS LEGRAND.......2005-10-11

If there is a more consistently marvelous album of piano music performed by the composer, I have yet to find it. One of the wonderful things about Legrand is that it's impossible to hyperbolise regarding his writing or his performing. He is "taste" and "technique" personified.
This album is a must for anyone who wants to hear how these songs should be performed.

Sunlight on his fingertips

The very bright talent of Michele Legrand you can feel especially when Maestro is playing piano himself.

I heard some orchestra performance of Legrand before, that was good, but I was still thinking about him just like about pop music composer.

Now I think different - he is Genius!

3 out of 5 stars Not the Usual Michel Legrand.......2003-06-02

If you like jazz, this CD may be for you. However if you're used to associating smooth Easy Listening with Mr. Legrand, pick some other recording, cause this is jazz, man.

5 out of 5 stars Michel Legrand--A Master.......2000-08-22

If you think you are unaware of this master of a composer, pianist, conductor, and arranger--you have probably heard his works behind the scenes of some of the most classic movies, and only have known how glorious his music is, not his name. Michele Legrand has been performing his musical magic with the ivories since the 1960's. Performers such as Streisand, Shirley Bassey, and Liza Minnelli turn to him for the ultimate in orchestration and composition.

On this incredible cd we are treated to 12 tracks of harmonious, passion evoking music. "Watch What Happens" from the movie Umbrellas of Cherbourg was a successful stretch in an operetta. You might be more familiar with "Windmills Of Your Mind" which was highlighted in the Thomas Crown Affair. One of my very favorite Legrand tunes is "The Summer Knows" from Summer Of '42.

In my opinion, he is the greatest contempory composer of the 20th century. One cannot fake Michel Legrand. He is a master at the ABA form. However, his secret is using deceptive resolutions in his works yet making everything locigal by the end of the piece. For example, "What Are You Doing For The Rest of Your Life", begins in A minor, working so smoothly to A flat minor in the bridge and subtly transcending back to A minor.

This is a grand CD of good audio quality highlighting Legrand's musical genius.

2 out of 5 stars The barest glimpse of John Williams.......2006-08-15

John Williams is one of the world's best guitarists, but you'd never know it by listening to this album. He basically plucks out the melody. I think I hear more complex playing in the background, but if that's what it is, it's mixed so as to be barely audible. On the other hand, it's very nice background music. I hope brisk sales support Williams' more serious efforts.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe it'll grow on me.......2004-07-28

If I were not a guitarist myself, I would find this collection very very charming. Certainly the selections are beautiful, and Williams is renowned for one of them: Stanley Myers' "Cavatina" from THE DEER HUNTER. It's just that for me this recording does virtually nothing for either the guitar or the lovely pieces selected for this rather peculiar alteration. I'm just not sure that this kind of project, where a virtuoso SOLOIST is brought in to ACCOMPANY an orchestra (Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma have done similar recordings) is a winner; not even five percent of Williams' prodigious technique is anywhere to be heard and he just sounds so irrelevant. (I'd usually expect to hear this kind of thing from Liona Boyd.) That being acknowledged though, the melodies ARE perfectly lovely and Mr. Williams HAS throughout his great career done many brilliant recordings of dense and difficult music that leave one's mouth agape. I suppose he's earned this little vacation.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!!!.......2002-09-15

I like this CD very much, I have looked for it for 5 years since I listened its MP3, I got it now, thanks!

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-04-24

While this album is pleasant enough, it is more orchestra music than classical guitar. John Williams is a great classical guitarist, but the guitar part on this album could have been played by any competent guitarist. If you want nice background music, this album is ok. If you want classical guitar music, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Williams' Winning Style Captures Film Scores.......2000-08-25

If you like film music, this CD is for you; if you like guitar music, this CD is for you. John Williams brings his guitar virtuosity to bear masterfully on the scores of a number of popular films, which span a period of 60 years.

The use of the guitar gives a different sound to number of the selections, and shows that a good piece of music will shine, no matter what the instrumentation.
