    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding album!!.......2006-11-28

Marcelo is back with a great album, at least the best produced by far. Can't stop listening to tracks like "E Assim Que Se Faz", "E Preciso Lutar" and "(Um Filme) Malandragem". The last two have killer jazz piano playing parts mixed in with some great female vocals and Marcelo's great rappin and beats. This CD can go a long way in late-night parties or just for chillin.

    5 out of 5 stars Hippity Hop.......2006-10-01

Call me naïve but what's not to like about a hippy hop band? Although I have absolutely no idea what this Brazilain sexpot is saying or whether it is legal, it sounds good. Who can doubt the mighty Marcelo? I have to get myself a one way ticket to Brazil! Soon!

4 out of 5 stars The man does it again.......2006-06-16

A few throw backs to the last album, a bit more 'Gilles Peterson' if that makes any sense. A lot more emphasis on musical and vocal melody it seems. The only music listened to more in brazil than this guy is the Windows start up tune.

3 out of 5 stars All Hail The Queen, But What Happened To Her Other Songs?.......2004-03-28

Gal Costa's voice truly is a gift of God. She is definitely one of Brasil's greatest singers and has given the world so many great songs that are certain to sustain the test of time....But with that in mind, be aware that although this album is fairly decent, it does not include many of her greatest hits, like "Bahia de Todas". I was also a little disappointed by the fact that this album seemed overwhelmed with ballads, rather then being an equal balance including many of Gal's wonderful uptempo songs. It's truly a shame that this album was not as well balanced as it had the potential to be. But from my experience often times it's hard to find a true "greatest hits" album by any artist, that delivers ALL of their greatest work. The only way you might be able to get that lucky is if a greatest hits compiliation comes in a box set.

5 out of 5 stars Gal's most perfect collection of 60's,70's and early 80's.......2002-07-16

This is the most comprehensive collection of Gal's songs even though it leaves out the mid to late 80's and the 90's.Having one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard,Gal delivers as
expected in gems such as FORCA ESTRANHA and FOLHETIM,my favorites.Sambas such as CANTA BRASIL and BALANCE show the fun side that makes Gal Costa such a unique singer.Ballads such as DOM DE ILUDIR and INDIA leave you wanting for more.Overall, a winner although missing some classics.

5 out of 5 stars I fell in love with Gal ..........2001-11-08

... or at least with her voice, when I first bought this album in 1991. I already had a couple of her albums, and loved her music, but this is by far her best. And it's a wonderful compilation of folk, pop, and samba songs, a little of everything, extremely well blended and well aranged.

The previous reviewer quoted Tom Jobim as saying "Gal Costa's voice is the most perfect instrument on the planet." I hate to repeat, it sounds like I don't have words of my own, but that is the best way I've heard her voice described. I've felt that way for years! You have to listen to this album.

All the songs are great. My personal favorite is India, but it doesn't really show off her voice as well as some of the others - - I just happen to get lost in it. To really hear what she's capable of doing with her voice as an instrument, listen to the full track of Meu Nome é Gal (not just the clip on the site). And listen to all the clips, all the songs are worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Gal: The Most Perfect Instrument.......1998-07-24

As Tom Jobim once said: "Gal Costa's voice is the most perfect instrument on the planet." He was not kidding.

This set of 20 amazing tracks is filled with fantastic performances from one of Brazil's leading female vocalists. (Since the death of Elis Regina, Gal Costa takes the crown.)

This CD is my favorite of all her work, and there is not a single bum track or filler song. Stand out tracks are: the alien searching "London, London", the incredibly rich "Luz Do Sol", the native "Acaí", "Meu Nome E Gal" and my favorite track "Baby."

The CD closes with Gal's inspired interpretations of 3 Brasilian "marchinhas" (little marches), a style of short samba tune meant to be easy to learn and repeat during "Carnaval." The last track is also samba-infected and a version of a famous Moraes Moreira hit.

A MUST for those interested in Brasilian pop and samba music. Gal is not as theatrical a! s Elis, not as melancholic as Bethania, but she is gifted with one of the most beautiful human voices around. Enjoy!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A refreshing and intimate album........2007-06-15

"Meu Samba Torto" is the new album from Brazilian singer-songwriter Clara Moreno. There are interpretations of classic bossa nova tracks such as 'Moça Flor', originally recorded by the Tamba Trio, 'Vem Morena Vem', from Jorge Ben's debut album, and 'Morena Boca de Ouro', made famous by João Gilberto.
For the album Clara draws on the help of her mother (the bossa legend Joyce) who oversaw the project, plays guitar on a couple of tracks and wrote "Sabe Quem" especially for her daughter.
The track "Meu Samba Torto" was also composed for the album and written by Celso Fonesca who pops up throughout on guitar and also provides excellent backing vocals on "Litorânea".
The album also features covers of Jorge Ben's "Vem Morena Vem" and "Morena Boca de Ouro", made famous by João Gilberto, of Brazilian classic "Moça Flor", originally recorded by the Tamba Trio, a version of "Mon Manege a Moi", originally recorded by the French legend Edith Piaf, and a beautiful cover of the American jazz standard "Tenderly".
Clara's rich, sometimes breathy voice is backed by simple guitar rhythms and gentle percussion. She avoids the temptation to prove her modernity through unnecessary electronic components and instead concentrates on producing warm and endearing music.
Her voice is at its most sexy on "Bahia com H" while "Copacabana" demonstrates its versatility.
Like most albums in the nu-Brazil vein Meu Samba Torto features the ubiquitous English track, and sadly like others in the same vein there is little good to be said about it.
Despite that, and perhaps also putting aside the experimental sounding "Se Acaso Voce Chegass" -- which may take a bit of getting used to, this is a refreshing and intimate album.
Besides...there is something about Brazilian music that makes it sound better in the sunshine and Clara Moreno's "Meu Samba Torto" is no different.

5 out of 5 stars Resgate do Verdadeiro Samba.......2006-06-08

After two decades of "corrupt" samba and with the born of the stupid and terrible pagode (once only the name of the samba rounds), Teresa Cristina & Grupo Semente were the first samba heroes in 2002/2003. This live CD/DVD is the true, and new, brazilian samba!

        5 out of 5 stars .......2006-04-29

Teresa Cristina and Grupo Semente are the best thing that happened to samba in the past couple of years. If you want to peek into the future of true samba, buy this album, and the other two she has released so far.

5 out of 5 stars Among the Best MPB (Brasilian Folk Music) releases in '05 .......2005-10-25

Carioca Singer Teresa Cristina and Grupo Semente are among the crowd that is revitalizing Brasilian Folk Music going in the opposite way that many new artists are traveling. Instead of adding electronica and new instruments to Bossa Nova, Samba and Pagode; they are actually revitalizing traditional sounds and instruments by offering master renditions with glorious traditional sounds. In "O Mundo é Meu Lugar - Ao Vivo", Grupo Semente offers glorious percussions that build the fundamental rythm backbone to the mix of Samba and Pagode the album offers. On top of the contagious beat the guitars and other instruments build a very beautiful environment for Teresa Cristina's beautiful voice.

Teresa Cristina has earned her stipes by working the carioca bar scene. Originally from the North Rio borough of Bomsucesso, she won her experience and early fame in the bohemian district of Lapa, in downtown Rio. Teresa met her current musicians at the Teatro Semente in 1978, and therefore the name of the group was born. To date, she has released only three albums: her double CD debut with a tribute to Paulinho de Viola (her debut was nominated for the Grammy to the Best Samba record), her second album "A Vida me Fez Assim" and this album "O Mundo é O Meu Lugar", a live collection of traditional and new songs recorded at the Municipal Theater of Niteroi, a Rio de Janeiro suburb.

The whole album is very solid and both Teresa Cristina's vocals as well as Grupo Semente's musical interpretation are outstanding. Given the quality of interpretation is hard to tell that this is a live record. There is also a DVD version of the record, which is probably a very good idea to try.

If you want to try a few tracks, try the following: "Gorjear da Passarada", "Candeeiro", "O Meu Guri", a beautiful interpretation of Chico Buarque's song and "Embala Eu", a great song which closes the album on a high note.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack and great album.......2005-09-21

Wonderful album; DVD also available on Amazon is even better. So many great parts it's hard to know where to start. How about Elton Medeiros playing the 'caixa de fosforos' (matchbox), a one-man percussion session ? Carinhoso, for sure; but also the work with Velha Guarda de Portela is genuine and profound. The voices may go as they get older, but the sense of timing just gets better. Great old sambistas may only be able to suggest the outlines of the melody, but the musicality is 10000% there . .

          5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2005-04-29

I picked this album while visiting Rio. I could not be happier with my purchase. The rendition of Carinhoso by Marisa Monte is beuatiful. The only criticism I would have of the CD is that the complete version of "Argumento" was not included in it.

This CD is the soundtrack of the documentary with the same title. I regret no having looked for the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous acoustic music from Brazil.......2004-05-30

Absolutely delightful. The son of a well-known Brazilian samba player from the pre-bossa nova era, in the 1960s Paulinho Da Viola became one of the foremost proponents of a resurgent movement back towards the old-fashioned acoustic music of the 1920s, '30s and '40s, and is one of Brazil's most highly regarded traditionally-oriented musicians.

This is a relaxed, informal set that highlights Da Viola in a variety of styles, and also serves as the sondtrack for a documentary film about his life and work. Da Viola's approach is alternately stately and refreshingly offhand, with some songs summoning tremendous elegance and others, like a few tunes with the somewhat rough hewn Velha Guarda Da Portela, that let the rough sides show. Other guests include fellow sambistas Zeca Pagodinho and Elton Medeiros as well as pop singer Marisa Monte, who beautifully croons a version of the old Pixinguinha standard, "Carinhoso," an album highlight, but one which in no way overshadows the rest of this fine, fine album. Da Viola remains, indisputably, one of the great masters of Brazilian acoustic music. Another highly recommended album!
