2 out of 5 stars A little annoying.......2007-05-15

Ska punk blah blah blah. Most annoying, is his Copycat song, he states that Chrisopher Columbus steals the thunder from Amerigo Vespucci, since America took it's name from him. This is retarded, because Vespucci was simply a mapmaker who never came to America, but put his name there because he could. It just irks me.

5 out of 5 stars you need this!.......2007-01-03

Can't say enough good things about Eugene Hutz and Gogol Bordello. Wake yourself up with this gypsy punk Ukrainian beat and you'll wonder what the hell you've been doing with your life all this time.

5 out of 5 stars east infection.......2006-07-28

i find it energtic if not manic, ethnic punk. world music eastern european traditionally instrumented flavor and a touch of conventional electric guitar/drum-set mixed with absurdity. an enjoyable charicature or spoof of itself. absolutely palatable, satiating any craving for outrageous lyrics spoken from our eastern comrades' perspective. possibly widening our own perspective, not brainwashing, brain blasting and aptly named "East Infection". it grows on you.

4 out of 5 stars East, west, whatever's best.......2006-07-04

Imagine a crazed gypsy violinist (like Peter Sellers on the Muppets?) lost in the middle of a punk-rock festival. By the time he staggers out, he's infected with the music.

That's about the sound of Gogol Bordello, who recently broke out with their latest album. Before that album, however, came the feisty EP "East Infection," with a rollicking string of infectious gypsy-folk-punk songs, raw singing and lots of explosive energy. This is a good kind of "infectious."

It kicks off with the jagged spunkiness of the title track, with Eugene Hutz shouting somewhat incoherently over the raw music.... right before the song slows down, to allow Andra Ursuta to coo "leeleeleeleelee... lalalalala!" over and over. Whhooooaaaaaaa....

They briefly veer into accordion folk, very nice and low-key... before launching into the fiddle avalanche of "Mala Vida" and the sinister dark punk of "Copycat." The EP gets rounded off with two more songs: a driving rock song, and a slower, softer bit of gypsy music. It's a nice way to end it.

Basically, "East Infection" is a good place to start off with Gogol Bordello -- it's got the traditional tunes and the punky music, and the band goes all the way from one extreme to the other. And at the end of the EP, if it's your kind of music, you'll be left desperately wanting more.

Eugene Hutz has the sort of raw, howling, lightning-quick voice that most punk-rockers would sacrifice a vocal chord to have. Except I suspect that it comes to him naturally. And whatever does he sing? "My strange uncles from abroad/yes I never met'em!/but I took everything they wrote/and I'll never forget 'em!"

And their actual music is just as weird as their lyrics. It's a big melting pot of instruments -- the fiddle, accordion, and some wickedly nimble basslines and riffs that make you want to leap up and dance. I think I even heard a xylophone somewhere in the mix.

Whether an introduction to Gogol Bordello, or just another of their high-octane creations, "East Infection" is thoroughly insane and utterly danceable.

5 out of 5 stars pure joy, pure energy, i love this band!!!.......2005-09-17

This is a fantastic EP. Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz has reached a maturity in his songwriting that is reflected in this EP and the recent album "Gypsy Punks." Lets review!

1) East Infection: Is that Natasha Fatale (from Rocky and Bullwinkle) I hear? What an opening with an incredible catching female vocal by Andra Ursuta, "lalala leeleelee . ." This song rocks.

2) Ave B: This song is catchy and I'm wondering why Hutz is always singing about Sally?

3)Mala Vida: This is one of my favorites on the CD, with a singsong accordion and driving drums it captures your ear.

4) Copycat: This song is more punk than gypsy and has a great bassline.

5) Strange Uncles From Abroad: Another favorite on the disc -- I love the lyrics and the driving beat. More lilting accordians and violins that make me spin in circles (I must dance! cannot stop myself!)

6) Madagascar-Roumania (Tu jesty fata) -- this song sneaks onto the disc -- you'll know what I mean when you hear it. Here the pace is reduced and a quiet guitar ballad singing the praises of punk rock and the perseverence of music to occur in our lives. What is great about this song is that it is tailed with a Roumanian folk song, sung by the same woman from song one, what a beautiful voice! So here is some pure "gypsy" music and it is beautiful.

I can't review the video on this cd because my cd drive is broken. I'll bet it is great -- I've seen them live and they put on a show for the eyes and the ears.

If you love Gogol Bordello, you might give the Dog Faced Hermans a try. They also have great energy -- and a great trumpet player, but no folk influence.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal-Prog!.......2002-11-08

This album is really off my usual beat (free-jazz, 20th century concert music, classical) but this album really kicks. Weasel Walter made his original name here in Chicago doing a particularly punky version of free jazz. But this album has absolutely nothing to do with that sort of music. This is Walter's latest evolution...brutal-prog.

First let's get the misconceptions out of the way first. The Flying Luttenbachers is NOT, I repeat NOT a Ken Vandermark group. Ken appeared on only two FL CDs, and neither of them is this CD! All through the reviews of FL albums here on Amazon, everybody seems to think that Ken Vandermark appears on the discs...even the discs on which there is no saxophone to be heard. Secondly, these discs have nothing to do with afro-beat or world music. Some of the reviewers here seem either confused or not to have listened to the music at all.

Now to the music itself. Weasel Walter frequently reforms his band, and with each new formation the music changes drastically. This is the first (and last) recording of Walter's last Chicago line-up (he has recently announced that he is going solo again and then will be moving to the Bay Area...so this group will probably not record again....then again, you can never tell with Weasel Walter). The music is totally composed...there is no improvisation on this CD. Walter calls this music "brutal-prog" and that fits very well. It's a mix of progressive rock ala early King Crimson and death-metal like Incubus. Every track on the disc is played at lightening speed. The rhythms are highly complicated with odd time signatures predominating, and the writing is extremely challenging. The band performs with a crispness that has not previously been part of the Luttencacher's vocabulary. The melodic content, such as it is, is tense and dissonant and the music is infused with a high degree of controlled noise. It is a sonic assault that makes groups like Nine Inch Nails and Sonic Youth sound like lilies of the field!

Infecktion and Decline also continues the story concept that the FLs began in Gods of Chaos. Both albums (and perhaps others) have an underlying program involving an apocalyptic scenario of alien robots who destroy declining humanity. This kind of concept rock is reminicent of many progressive rock groups from the 70's, but twisted through a darker vision. (In fact, Hal Russell Luttenbacher, who was originally the great Chicago improviser Hal Russell, is now a sleeping robot who will awaken to destroy the world.) Do I take this seriously? No...but it's great fun on a concept album.

The final track on the CD is a searing cover of Magma's De Futura. Walter has a particular facsination with this tune. He also covered it on The Truth is a F**cking Lie. This version is much cleaner than the earlier version and even more terrifying than Magma's original.

This is maybe one of the strongest FL album. The writing is much tighter. What is lost in spontaneity is gained in ensemble. Kudos to Alex Perkolup and Jonathan Hitchke for tackling this incredibly chanllenging material. Here's hoping that Weasel Walter finds what he's looking for in the Bay Area. He has left behind a facsinating body of work here in Chicago.

4 out of 5 stars This is not DUB, but great ELECTRONICA.......2005-02-16

it is true that those seeking true dub music will be disappointed. if u want some prince tubby, there is almost nothing here that would seem related. However, i think it is an amazing collection. There is a lot of great AMBIENT music on here, but if you want dancable tracks they are few. if you want to hear some intelligent electronic music, kick back with this collection. it is music to really listen to, or trip out on, but not partying boogy music.

5 out of 5 stars A near classic.......2005-02-03

Please ignore the previous reviewer, who clearly does not know what he's talking about. "I like reggae, and something with a groove, and that's not what this is, so it sucks" is NOT A REVIEW. Likewise, criticizing the people who do like this, and have heard of these artists, has nothing to do with the music itself (and no one over the age of, I don't know, FIFTEEN should be using the word "poseur"). Just because YOU haven't heard of something does not make it obscure, it just means YOU haven't heard of it.

That said, if you ARE someone who has heard of Tortoise or Coil or Bill Laswell or Spring Heel Jack or Mick Harris, and likes similar artists, then you will not be disappointed by this. The Tortoise track alone is incredible, a blistering, dubbed-out, seven minute drum workout that is as strong as anything they've ever done. The tracks by lesser-known artists, such as Earthling and Bedouin Ascent, are equally strong, and there is an amazing consistency to this compilation as a whole. Despite the fact that these artists are working in different genres (ambient, drum and bass, trip hop, and yes, reggae), they all share a common dedication to experimenting with sound and dub techniques.

2 out of 5 stars Not a reggae CD.......2000-09-04

This CD was in Spin's top 100 of the 90's. But that doesn't make it a reggae CD. If anything, this would be enjoyed by avant-garde stoners who want to impress people they know with the most obscure recording possible. It reminds me of college radio in the '90s: no such thing as an underground anymore, so let's just be weirdo poseurs and impress with how far out we're willing to go and still call it music and act like we like it so people will think that we're hip. Dancing is irrelevant, not to mention musicality.

The one real reggae track is the Two Bad Card track "Sergio Mendez" (available elsewhere, though I haven't heard the original album, a later Adrian Sherwood project; listen to it, and if you like it, get that instead), which is incorrectly identified here, band-wise. The Tricky track is almost amusical, the Mad Professor track not much better. So much for artists you've heard of. (yeah, yeah, Golden Palominos, disappointing too). If you wanted to program these two CDs just for dub reggae, I would say there are about 8 tracks that actually have a reggae type bass played somewhere on the track, or something like it (1: 1, 3, 6, 12; 2: 4, 9-11), but even these tend to be half ambient introduction before any grooving, meaning you can't just add it to your compilation unless you like four minutes of white noise equivalent introducing your groove tracks.

In short, if you are looking for a sonic environment for your drug experience in a sensory deprivation tank, this might work if you enjoy musical psychosis, and don't need rhythm or melody, or even tone. It could also work if you're interested enough in the 15 minutes of quality groove that you have to locate yourself. Otherwise, it's just a bummer for the groove seeker. Too bad, I thought it sounded like I could throw it on and groove to it. Not possible.

dub music is not for everyone, but this is a very good sampler of "digital" or modern dub. while it would have been great to hear these tracks mixed in with older dubs, the selections are dark and menacing, exploring the role of dub in the genres of reggae, trip-hop and drum n bass. beware, once you fall into these eerie and soundscapes you may never be the same again.

5 out of 5 stars way ahead of its time.......2006-09-20

A truly abstract dub collection, and simply the best one that ever was. I am writing this review ten years after this CD was released, and it hasn't aged a day. Some of the most creative thinking you will find in electronic music, very advanced concepts here.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Volume One.......2000-04-24

MDIV2 suceeds where its predecessor failed. volume 1 had fartoo many "iffy" tracks (Laika, for instance, sounded morehouse than dub). volume 2 is pure dub. ranging from Bill Laswell's chillout music to the hardstep of Alec Empire on disc one, and from Skull's schizo track through Third Eye Foundation's trademark weirdness and the incredible Ice remix of a country song by Palace (!) on disc two, this is some serious hardcore dub. and yes, Alec Empire's track is dub; it's just HIS version of it... MDIV2 is hard to beat.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent.......1999-10-27

very cool double album of out-there dub. But since when has alec empire had one singular sound???

    5 out of 5 stars One question............1999-09-14

First let it be known that I LOVE this album and all it's songs, but..... WHAT THE HECK IS ALEC EMPIRE DOING ON A DUB CD?!! Don't get me wrong, I love his song too, but C'MON! It's Alec Empire! If you know what his stuff sounds like, and you know what dub is, then you will understand my confusion.

    5 out of 5 stars Get infected........1999-04-28

An awesome mix of styles and influences make this album a dark, dread epic into the outer reaches of dub. Primal mindfunk.

4 out of 5 stars a rare and unique pleasure.......2002-04-24

Like tiny dancing clowns climbing out of an oversized car, this CD turns circus music right on it's head. Instrumental, mostly electronic and sorta dinky sounding, with some good rockin' bass, guitars and drums thrown in here and there, but mostly like accordion and cheesy organ sounds with a variety of (electronic?)xylophone/glockenspiel type things. It sounds like Ego Plum, whoever that is, overscored the hell out of a children's movie and accidentally transformed the whole movie into a gothic circus-inspired horror film.

Some of this really does sound like music from a kid's show, like maybe Rugrats or something. Doesn't Mark Mothersbaugh do the music for that? Makes sense. There's alot of Devo in here, too. Like Devo in a creepy-carnival mood instead of you know, a plasticy Devo-type mood.

I listen to this almost every day. And that's what really matters. I'd really give this more like a 4 1/2 than a 4. It's a rare and unique pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Rowdy Circus Rodeo.......2002-04-23

Like a rowdy miniature circus. Some of it sounds like music from a kid's show. Some of it sounds like Danny Elfman with a low budget and some anger to work out. Fun, syncopated little songs with electronics and some real guitars and stuff that all sound like a devo/carnival/residents soundtrack to a crazed kid's show in hell. Does that make any sense? It mkes me do silly little dances, and I NEVER do that. It's (almost) all instrumental, and still there are many little stories told. This a is a fun CD that probably sounds much better than my above description. I listen in the morning, and it's mechanical nature kinds of moves me through the morning. SeeYA

    5 out of 5 stars Invincible single.......2005-12-15

This is the most haunting song I've ever listened to. I know no equal to Infection. Onitsuka's specialty, the piano in the back; singing the type of song she does best. Do you remember the last time you found a track for which you thought "yes, I will be in love with this forever."

After Infection, it's hard to ever find another ballad with zero-cheese (get out, celine dion and your like!), and so much spirit. Perfect music and lyrics... This is the song which brought me to falling in love with Onitsuka's singing.

5 out of 5 stars Jpop at its Best!!.......2005-08-25

I bought the full length album with this single 3 years ago, yet I still listen to "infection" all the time. It has got to be the the most dramatic and beautiful song I've ever heard, even surpasing Celine Dion's famous "My Heart Will Go On." This song is way better--because it's not the sort of mushy love song that Dion specializes in! Whether your a Jpop fan, or just a fan of great music, I recommend getting, not only the single, but the full-length album, "This Armor." You won't regret it! Onitsuka ROCKS!!!!

She's a newcomer on the Jpnz music scene. Se's actually from Miyazaki in southern Japan. Her voice is soothing, even if you don't understand what she is singing, in a way that is similar to Tara Maclean an dother female singer-songwriters. Onitsuki is not one of those teeny bopper teen-idols that Japan is so famous for. I don't thnk she can dance but she sure can sing. I resisted for ages from buying this because I was going to rent it and cpy it (heaven forbid). I think I drove my husband up the wall every time I heard her songs on the radio or TV. Finally I picked up the album version of this (released in 2002). I'm so glad I finally got it. The actual album has 10 songs. the beginning is okay, but the ending songs are definitely better -- so much so that I'm always surprised when the CD ends. I always want it to play longer. BTW, if you like her, I also recommend Chitose Hajime, another newcomer with a POWERFUL voice that belies her youth and tiny stature.
